  • Fever are 3-0 ATS vs Sky this season
  • Sky are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 matchups

It's Friday, August 30, and we have another prime matchup on the WNBA slate between the Indiana Fever (15-16, 6-11 away) and the Chicago Sky (11-19, 4-11 home). The third meeting of the season, the Fever have a 2-1 series lead over the Sky, and find themselves as five-point favorites for tonight's matchup.

15-16 on the WNBA season, the Fever find themselves as the no. 7 seed.

  1. As playoff contenders, Indiana is 7-3 in the last 10 games, including a gutsy 84-80 victory over the Connecticut Sun.
  2. Currently sitting third in the Eastern Conference, the Fever are a significantly better team compared to their last meeting with the Sky.
  3. Led by Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, and Aliyah Boston, the level of talent has never been in question. It was a matter of team chemistry and execution.

11-19 on the season, the Chicago Sky recently went through a roster shakeup, which may affect the outcome of tonight's game.

With the evolution and importance of Angel Reese, the Sky traded Marina Mabrey to the Connecticut Sun in exchange for Rachel Banham and Moriah Jefferson.

In addition, star guard Chennedy Carter is ruled out for tonight's game due to health and safety protocols.

With just three wins over the last 10 matchups, the Sky have dropped four straight against the Washington Mystics, Las Vegas Aces, Connecticut Sun, and Phoenix Mercury.

  • While they remain in the hunt for the final playoff and eighth seed, this is a young team that's slightly regressed.
  • However, led by WNBA legend Teresa Weatherspoon, this is a team that plays tough and fights to the end.

SPREAD BET: INDIANA FEVER

  • -5 ( -112 FanDuel)

The Indiana Fever are playing some fantastic basketball as of late, after starting the season 0-5. With much speculation about Caitlin Clark's adjustment to the league, it's safe to say she's found her way.

However, this is a very talented Fever team that goes well beyond Clark, which WNBA fans and bettors are starting to witness.

  • 19-13 against the spread this season, Indiana is 7-3 ATS in their last ten matchups, including impressive four point underdog spread covers against Connecticut, Seattle, and Minnesota.

Claiming victories in four of the last five games, it's ball fluid ball movement, increased chemistry, and all around team usage that's helped the Fever become a spread favorite to bet on.

WHY THE INDIANA FEVER WILL COVER THE -5 POINT SPREAD

By inserting Lexie Hull into the starting lineup, she provides Indiana with a solid three-point threat.

  1. Her usage rate is up to 12.5 percent over the last five games, logging heavy minutes for head coach Christie Sides.
  2. Hull has emerged as a solid starter, despite earlier inconsistencies in June and July.
  3. She had a career night with 22 points on 6-7 three-point shooting against the Seattle Storm on August 18.
  4. Recently, she made four three-pointers against Connecticut, proving value for both bettors and Fever fans.
  5. Hull's dominance outside the arc, especially from the corner, has been enhanced by Caitlin Clark's court vision and facilitating skills.

Indiana has also learned to better utilize Aliyah Boston in pick and rolls. Tallying two double-doubles in the last three games, the former Rookie of the Year has established chemistry with Clark, especially with high-low plays and high-ball screens.

THE FEVER ARE MUCH MORE THAN CAITLIN CLARK

And of course, there's Caitlin Clark, who's currently the WNBA Rookie of the Year leader with -3000 odds. Sure, she's known for her notorious deep ball shots, especially from the logo. Averaging 18 points and 5.7 rebounds, and 8.1 assists on the season, it's her court vision that has bettors talking.

Favoring her PRAs for tonight, she's the WNBA leader in assists for a reason.

  • One of the most consistent players in the WNBA, it's been Clark's ability to set up her teammates.
  • This includes Kelsey Mitchell, who's averaging 25.6 points over the last five games, and NaLyssa Smith, who's 2.5 rebounds away from averaging a double-double in points and rebounds in the season.

I love the Indiana Fever to cover the spread bet tonight with -112 odds. Not terribly juiced, this is clearly a team that operates on production from multiple players. Although they rank second to last in most points allowed per game (86.5), they have an excellent matchup with the Sky tonight.

THE FEVER HAVE GREAT ODDS TO COVER THE SPREAD VS SKY

Overall, I love this spread bet based on the momentum this team has heading into this matchup.

  • It's not easy to defeat the Connecticut Sun, one of the most fierce teams on the defensive end.
  • This team has proven they can hang with impressive victories over Phoenix and Seattle, who have veteran All-Star and Olympic players.
  • They are 7-4 as spread favorites this season and also 11-9 covering the spread as underdogs.

Tonight, the Fever find themselves as favorites, after covering the 1.5 underdog point spread against the Sky earlier in the season. 2-1 against Chicago on the season, they hold a 6-point differential throughout three games against them. With two games decided by one point or less, you're probably wondering why I picked the Fever to cover tonight.

My reasoning is that the Sky are a young team, and they've regressed. That's not to say the talent isn't there.

  • Angel Reese has exceeded expectations as a rookie, especially from a betting perspective. A difference maker on the offensive boards and inside, this is a team that struggles offensively.
  • Inserting Michaela Onyenwere into the starting five has certainly given Chicago an offensive boost.

However, the loss of Marina Mabrey and the absence of Chennedy Carter will be a tough challenge to overcome against a red-hot Fever team. Averaging less than 80 points a game, this is a Chicago team that struggled to barely put up 70 points against the Mystics. Without Carter, they automatically lose the catalyst behind their offensive production and scoring.

7-14 against the spread as underdogs, the Sky also hold a terrible spread coverage record of 5-10 at home this season.

Final prediction: Indiana Fever -5 spread coverage against the Chicago Sky

Overall, I am laying the points with the Indiana Fever tonight.

  • I don't think five points is unreasonable, and I believe the spread difference will increase as the day goes on.
  • Although the Sky are a rebounding machine, the Fever are 4-1 against the spread in their last five games, and it's hard to fade that.

This is a team that fights until the very end, with only an eight-point differential in three straight losses. More impressively, they missed out on victories against the Aces and Sun by just two points.

If Carter were present for this matchup, perhaps I would lay the points with Chicago. However, it will be hard to replace a player who's averaging 20.6 points over the last five games and 20 points against Indiana this season.

  • It will be up to Dana Evans and Lindsay Allen to step up for Chicago's backcourt.

I also worry about the Sky's lack of three-point shooting, as they are making just 30 percent on the season. Over the last five games, the Sky are hitting just 31.1 percent of their shots from downtown.

  • Lastly, if you're betting on the WNBA, the Fever are 3-0 against the spread vs the Sky this WNBA season.
