Defending champions New York Liberty is looking to go back-to-back when it takes on the red-hot Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA Commissioner's Cup Finals on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.
Do-it-all guard Sabrina Ionescu led the offensive charge with 26 points and 11 assists while last year’s Cup Most Valuable Player Jonquel Jones recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Liberty, who is expected to have their hands full against a pesky Lynx team.
The Lynx which holds a 4-1 record in the Commissioners Cup is expected to bank on versatile forward Napheesa Collier to deliver the goods in their clash with the Liberty.
In their most recent clash with the Liberty, Minnesota came up on top 84-67 thanks to Collier who put up 15 points and 12 boards.
Will the Lynx continue their mastery of the Liberty or will New York solve the puzzle and score a measure of revenge? We’ll find out soon enough but for now let’s look at the current New York Liberty vs Minnesota Lynx odds.
New York Liberty Injury Report
Minnesota Lynx Injury Report
New York has been a completely different squad following their blowout loss to Minnesota last May 25. The Liberty is currently on a three-game winning streak and has won 11 of their last 12 games.
More importantly, their victories have been extremely dominant, beating teams by an average margin of 13.5 points.
One thing worth noting as well is the Liberty’s strong frontcourt of Breanna Stewart and Jones who have given plenty of teams’ headaches down low.
With Miller still not a 100%, leaning towards the Liberty to cover the -5.5 spread at -108 could appeal to some punters.
The Minnesota Lynx has been firing on all cylinders this season, winning 13 of their last 16 games. A huge part of the Lynx ascent to the top is forward Napheesa Collier who is making a solid case for MVP, with season averages of 20.9 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.3 steals.
But contrary to popular belief, the Lynx is not a one-woman show. Despite the absence of shooting guard Diamond Miller, Minnesota has been getting solid offensive production from guards Kayla McBride and Courtney Williams.
McBride also leads the league in three points made at 3.3 per game.
Along with their 84.5 ppg average, Minnesota has a good chance of neutralizing a strong Liberty squad, which currently leads the league in scoring.
The Lynx also has a good history against New York, winning six of their last 10 meetings. During their victories, the Lynx has beaten the Liberty by an average margin of 8.8 points, with their last win being the 17-point drubbing of the latter.
All things considered, I am quite surprised the Minnesota Lynx comes into the match as 5.5 underdogs. While the New York Liberty is the best scoring team in the league, they technically won’t be playing at their home court.Over the weekend, the WNBA announced that the Liberty-Lynx match will be scheduled at the UBS Arena given the unavailability of the Barclays Center.
Ranking second and third in the league in both defense and offense, the Lynx have all the tools necessary to frustrate the Liberty who have been scoring for fun in the past six games.
While the Liberty and the Lynx are ranked first and third respectively on offense, I can see both teams tightening the defensive screws considering this is a Cup final match. One thing of note is in their last matchup, they combined for a total of 151 points.
