San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Angels: betting odds and predictions for Jun 3

Publish Date: 06/03/2024
Fact checked by: Allan Howe

The San Diego Padres have now won five out of their last seven games but they are coming off a 1-run loss to the Kansas City Royals their last time out. They were looking to sweep the Royals in their last series but their hot bats came to a screeching halt when they met up with Cole Ragans and the Royals bullpen.

They will be looking to get back on track and continue their dominance in their recent matchups and gain some ground on the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers as they start game 1 of this 3-game series with the Los Angeles Angels in this interleague matchup. With that said, we take a look at this matchup to make a Padres-Angels prediction and pick.

San Diego Padres

San Diego Padres (32-30)? sit in second place in the National League West 6.5 games behind the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers. The Padres are getting hot at the right time winning 6 out of their last 10 games and 5 out of their last 7 while their divisional foes have now lost 5 out of their last 10 games.

In their recent outburst, it's been their bats that have been doing a lot of the heavy lifting. In their last 5 games prior to their most recent loss to Cole Ragans on the Royals, the Padres are averaging 5.2? runs per 9 innings, hitting .310, with 10.8 hits, and an OBP of .365.

While the Padres bullpen has been a disaster as of late, it's been their starting pitching that has given them a solid head start before giving the ball to the relievers much like Michael King did in his last start going 7 innings just giving up 1 Earned Run.

Their starting cast over their last 5 games has an ERA of 2.96 giving up just a .238 batting average and a .273 OBP.

In this matchup, the Padres will send Matt Waldron to the mound who's had mixed results this season with a 3-5 record, 4.26 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and 60 strikeouts in 57 innings.

He is coming off an outing where he blanked the Miami Marlins giving up 0 Earned Runs with 6 hits and 8 strikeouts coming away with the victory. In his last 5 games, he has an ERA of 2.40 with 33 strikeouts in 26 innings, and in 4 of those 5 games, he's given up 2 runs or less.

The Padres will face off against Los Angeles Angels starter Tyler Anderson who like Waldron had his ups and downs this season as well. The Padres will need to get after him early in this matchup to get the job done.

If they can do that and Waldron can continue pitching the way he has, the Padres can pick it back up where they were prior to their last loss and kick off this new series with a win.

Los Angeles Angels

Los Angeles Angels (21-38) are sitting dead last in the American League West and a whopping 12 games behind the division-leading Seattle Mariners who seem to be pulling away at the moment winning 7 out of their last 10 games.

Nonetheless, the Angels come into this matchup looking to gain some confidence after losing 8 out of their last 10 games and each of their last 5 games coming into this interleague matchup with the San Diego Padres.

The Angels have been a disaster this season and their recent stretch of games doesn't seem like there is light at the end of the tunnel anytime soon. They have been struggling not only to generate runs but also to keep runs off the scoreboard against them.

However, luckily for them, they send Tyler Anderson to the mound who has been the Angels' best pitcher in their rotation this season. Despite his 5-5 record, Anderson has pitched well with a 2.47 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 48 strikeouts in 69.1 innings.

Anderson also has a good track record against the San Diego Padres limiting the current Padres lineup to a .193 (22-114) batting average, .252 OBP with 23 strikeouts.

  • Manny Machado (4-26, .154)
  • Fernando Tatis Jr. (0-7)
  • Jurickson Profar (4-18, .222)
  • Jake Cronenworth (2-21, .095)

All four of these star players for the Padres have had a ton of trouble during their time against Tyler Anderson who used to play for the Colorado Rockies prior to his time with the Angels.

It'll be up to Anderson to limit the damage from the bats of the San Diego Padres as well as the Angels to give him some much-needed run support as they play host to the visiting Padres in this Monday night matchup.

FINAL PADRES-ANGELS PICK & PREDICTION

The San Diego Padres are looking to get back on track after taking a loss in their series finale against the Kansas City Royals meanwhile, the Angels are looking to stop the bleeding and finally get on the winning side of things when they play host to the Padres in this Monday night showdown.

Both teams send surging pitchers Matt Waldron and Tyler Anderson to the mound who have been pitching very well this season.

All signs point to this matchup being a pitcher's duel with runs being very limited.

While it is tough to take a side here, especially on a team that is struggling like the Angels, they have a get-right spot here to avoid to get back to their winning ways.

The Padres struggle against left-handed pitching and today's matchup will be no different against a familiar foe Tyler Anderson. The Angels should give enough run support to Anderson as he locks down this Padres lineup as he gets his 6th win of the season and finally gets the Angels back into the win column.
