The post All-Euro: Noah Penda is Cream of Crop! appeared first on www.ebooksnet.com.
]]>The inaugural Pangos All-Euro Camp is in the books and after two days of competition and evaluation, there is a clear-cut Cream of the Crop performer in forward Noah Penda (No. 50 in the photo above) from Paris, France, who has aspirations to be a top-notch pro. Young prospects shined while interior players were eager to learn.
RELATED -- Pangos All-Euro: Hopefuls Make Statement!
The 55 players who came from all over Europe to the first Pangos All-Euro Camp aspire to play at the highest level possible. The majority have dreams of playing NCAA basketball or at a big-time high school in the United States, but the player who stood out from the rest of the pack is well on his way to achieving his pro dream.
Noah Penda, a 6-foot-7 18-year old (2023) from Paris, France, is eligible to play collegiate basketball in 2023-24, but he feels the best way to an established pro career is by playing professional basketball. He told Ballislife he will be playing for JA Vichy-Clermont Métropole Basket, a French pro team that plays in the Pro B league, France's second division of pro basketball. Penda has plenty of international experience and was the most impactful player at the two-day camp held at Basketaki Arena in Athens, Greece.
Penda could have easily been one of the camp's leading scorers or been ball-dominant against lesser players. He was everything but that for his "Lakers" team, leading them to a perfect 3-0 camp record with unselfish play, smarts and a calming presence. Penda doesn't force any shots and is always looking to make the simple play with excellent interior and hit ahead passing skill. He averaged 10.7 ppg in three games, but that doesn't begin to tell his impact, as Penda made the right read 100 percent of the time and contributed plenty of "hockey" assists. It's the approach he took, and added more to, from his experience with the French 19U national team.
"They expect me to do a bit of everything, from rebounding to guarding the top player on the other team," Pena said. "I just came out here to try and dominate and show what I can do."
If there was any doubt or debate about whom the All-Euro Camp's Most Outstanding Player was, Penda settled that in the Cream of the Crop All-Star Game reserved for the camp's 30 best players. Penda (who models his game after former NBA standout Carmelo Anthony and current star Luka Doncic) only scored five points, but he dominated the glass and created opportunities for others, finishing with eight rebounds and six assists.
Predictably Penda's Blue team won the game, 81-68, and he put his stamp on the camp with a vicious conventional 3-point play, two-handed power dunk through the key right before halftime that gave his team a 45-31 halftime lead. The Gold team got within seven points (58-51) with 11 minutes remaining in the second half, but could get no closer.
Penda easily could have been the game's MVP as well, but the hardware went to 6-foot-1 17-year old (2026) Eldin Ejubovic of Amsterdam, Netherlands. The slick combo guard nailed three 3-pointers and finished with 15 points. Ejubovic is eager to learn the game and improve his skill level. Many of the post players received quality input from Zisis Sarikopoulos, a former pro player from Greece who played collegiately at UAB and Ohio State and was the lead instructor for the camp's skill session. The MVP for the Blue team as chosen by the scouts in attendance was 6-foot-9 17-year old (2024) Stavros Karpouzis of Thessaloniki, Greece. The rugged power forward had seven points and seven rebounds and did a good job of making his presence felt on defense.
Two of the camp's more athletic players also made an impact in the Cream of the Crop All-Star Game. For the winning Blue Team that was 6-foot-3 18-year old (2023) Alleia Ivan Mobio of Alba, Italy. The athletic wing player made his mark with defense and energy, finishing with nine points, five rebounds and two steals. For the Gold Team, that player was 6-foot-4 18-year old (2024) Rodney Ekwoanya of London, England. He had 10 points and a couple of highlight reel blocks. The rangy athlete will play in 2023-24 at Evergreen Christian School (Leesburg, Va.)
Scoring 12 points for the Blue Team was six-foot 18-year old (2023) Divine Nnadi of Athens, Greece. Nnadi is a sound shooting guard who can create offense and forces the defense to give up real estate or make the officials call something because of his aggressive style.
Giorgos Giantsidis wasn't always aggressive, but made his mark at this camp with his outside shooting stroke. He was arguably the event's top marksman and the 6-foot-4 guard from Athens with the sweet stroke has only been 14 since May. Giantsidis, who idolizes NBA star Steph Curry, finished with 10 points, which he netted all in his first shift to follow up on his terrific shooting performance during his Thursday morning camp game.
"My intent coming in to this camp was to just play basketball, that's what I wanted to do, I didn't have any other expectations," Giantsidis said. "This was a good camp and I was trying to do my best. During the week, I get up 200 shots a day and on the weekend, I get up over 1,000. I don't have as much free time during the week, you know."
There were plenty of camp standouts who didn't necessarily have great showings in the Cream of the Crop All-Star Game. Among the players not mentioned in our first Pangos All-Euro Camp report include 6-foot-4 17-year old (2024) Paris Papadatos of Athens, 6-foot-6 17-year old (2024) Atanasij Trajanov of Macedonia, and 6-foot-4 15-year old (2027) Lukas Novakovic of Stockholm, Sweden.
Papadatos displayed a nice crossover and covers ground with the dribble. Trajanov got downhill as well as any wing guard in attendance and was a quality board man. Novakovic got more comfortable as the camp wore on and made solid reads with the ball.
Among the players not chosen for the Cream of the Crop All-Star Game who made an impact with their solid all-around play and were rated as one of the three best players on their respective team in at least two of the three camp games include 6-foot-3 16-year old (2025) Stathis Karatzas of Patras, Greece and 6-foot-8 17-year old (2025) Melchizedek Andre of London, England.

]]>RELATED -- Pangos All-Euro: Noah Penda is Cream of Crop!
The Pangos brand has been a strong force on the American grassroots basketball circuit for two decades now and entering its third decade, founder, owner and director Dinos Trigonis decided to branch out and host his first-ever camp across international waters in Europe. In 2018, Trigonis held a Pangos All-Canada Camp in Toronto, so it was only fitting that his first camp held in Europe be in Athens because of his Greek roots. The two-day camp has a true international flavor to it with over 55 prospects representing 16 countries and a wide range of ages. After one day of evaluation, it's safe to say the talent didn't disappoint.
The first Pangos All-Euro Camp Most Outstanding Player won't be decided until after Thursday's Cream of the Crop All-Star Game reserved for the top performers. It wouldn't surprise us if the MOP is one of the upperclass forwards in attendance.
Among the most impressive of the lot was 6-foot-5 17-year old (2024) Tomas Stankevicius of Kaunas, Lithuania. Stankevicius is a wing forward who has a nondescript aura about him with a skill set to be a big guard one day soon. He doesn't pop out on first appearance but the more you watch him, the more his impressive game stands out. Stankevicius has good offensive instincts from the triple threat or off the dribble, can see passing lanes, has good form on his jump shot and is sneaky athletic. He may not have great vertical pop, but he knows how to avoid defender's arms and body by contorting his own or hanging in the air just as long as necessary to finish the play. When you add that package to his strong frame, long arms and soft hands, you have quite the prospect.
Another one of the better all-around face-up wings in attendance was 6-foot-8 18-year old (2024) Georgios Vassilakis of Helsinki, Finland. Nobody rebounded out his area and with more authority than Vassilakis, who had double-digit rebounds in both of his camp games on Wednesday. He also had games of 18 and 14 points, which led his "Nuggets" team on both occasions.
Vassilakis (whose father is from Greece) can push the ball off the glass himself and displayed solid range on his outside stroke, including an effective mid-range pull up. He also can change direction and get his shoulders by defenders on his strong drives and has good timing as a shot blocker. He definitely has one of the nicest package of skill among all campers in attendance and is one of the handful of surefire D1 prospects
Among true post players, the biggest load inside was 6-foot-9 17-year old (2024) Stavros Karpouzis of Thessaloniki, Greece. Karpouzis definitely knows what he is (a back to the basket presence) and where his bread-and-butter lays. He punishes defenders, has workable feet and an array of interior moves that project. Karpouzis is also a terrific rebounder and has the skill set and approach to improve rapidly.
For many of the campers, the goal is to build enough exposure or attract enough attention to play NCAA basketball or finish playing high school ball in America, where the competition prepares a young prospect best for the rigors or pro basketball. One of the more mature players in attendance who could make an impact right away on the next level is 6-foot-7 18-year old (2023) Noah Penda of Paris, France. Penda has a rugged frame that translate well with an accommodating skill level. He can beat defenders off the dribble with a sneaky change of direction dribble to get downhill and is a willing and able passer. Penda, who has experience with France's 19U National Team, just needs polish up his overall offense to make himself an attractive option for a low D1, high D2 or national JUCO, as he is college eligible for 2023-24.
Among the younger forwards, Yannos Xanthopoulos arguably has the most potential. The 6-foot-8 Athens native is listed as a 2024 prospect, but he's still 16 years old and has plenty of room for growth and improvement. Xanthopoulos can run the floor well for his size, has good timing around the basket and a quality face-up game. Once he develops a more aggressive mentality and realizes he can impact games at a higher frequency by taking charge instead of playing a secondary role, the sky is the limit for this local product.
In the first installment of this camp, the group was a bit apprehensive in drills and to begin play, but picked up the intensity as the first long day wore on. The backcourt players definitely needed to take charge more and show more leadership instead of waiting for someone else or a teammate to do it. One of the reasons for that was the more talented lead guards were underclassmen. The one with the most feel and passing ability was 6-foot-3 16-year old (2026) Noel Emile-Lewis Mantock of Novi Sad, Serbia.
Mantock's passing ability is top-notch and in addition to making the right reads at the right time, he can execute tough passes without over-extending. He threaded the needle on a 40-foot bounce pass against the grain that would have made plenty of D1 college guards envious by the ease in which he did it. Mantock, whose father is Jamaican, has a nice array of offensive moves off the dribble and a quality first step.
Below are some of the other young guards (by age or class) who turned heads on the first day of the Pangos All-Euro Camp:
Angelos Bratakos, Athens (Greece) 6-2 (2024) 16
Quality ball-handler that knows how to get square to the rim.
Neo Anker Allarp Dengaky, Copenhagen (Denmark) 6-1 (2028) 14
Talented with blow by ability, and is working on not getting in the air to make a play.
Themistoklis Donakis, Thessaloniki (Greece) 6-0 (2026) 14
A deft ball-handler who can see the game.
Orestis Koutras, Psihiko (Greece) 6-0 (2025) 15
Knows how to play with pace and can really shoot the piss out of it.
Bilal Raymond Pedersen, Copenhagen (Denmark) 6-2 (2026) 17
Can sprint with the ball and has a nice pull-up game.

Another day, another highlight from the Philippines of my favorite UAAP player, Ateneo Blue Eagle star Thirdy Ravena.
Thirdy used to be known as the little brother of PBA All-Star Kiefer Ravena or the son of former PBA Rookie of the Year Bong Ravena or "the other Ravena." Now, not only has he stepped out of their shadows, he's now being compared to a NBA All-Star.
It's not just the way he attacks the rim that has people calling him the "Westbrook ng Pilipinas." He's 6'2" with a zero on his back and a knack for getting boards over bigger defenders.

Nice, but where's the explosiveness that we associate with Westbrook?
Here's the UAAP season 80 Finals MVP throwing down a vicious dunk that's worthy of being labeled Westbrook-like.
He's also had a few impressive highlights on the defensive end too. Check out this backboard slap and block on Japan's Takuma Sato and volleyball slap on Ron Dennison.
If you aren't a fan yet, watch this 2017 highlight reel and best dunks compilation.
If you still aren't a fan, maybe this video of his basketball journey will convert you. If it doesn't, at least you now know his name.

]]>The post The Viral Marcelino Twins, Future PBA Stars? appeared first on www.ebooksnet.com.
]]>I love basketball videos about twin brothers: Horace and Harvey Grant, Marcus and Markieff Morris, Brook and Robin Lopez, Jason and Jarron Collins, even Aaron and Andrew Harrison (mainly because they played high school ball a few minutes from my house). So last year, when I came across this video (make sure you at least go to the 1:56 mark) of the Marcelino twins, Jaycee and Jayvee, I was interested and hoping to hear more about the 21-year-old "future PBA stars" of the Lyceum Pirates.
This past weekend, the 5-9 twins played in the NCAA Season 94 All-Star Game and made some international news by teaming up for a dunk that went viral and led to a pretty amusing comment from Amir Johnson to his former Boston Celtic teammate, Isaiah Thomas.
"I got you if we ever play together again..lol." Said Johnson via B/R

Although the 5-9 IT has never thrown down a dunk during a NBA game, he has some pretty impressive hops and even won a dunk contest in college.
Back to the twins, besides throwing down the dunk of the game with a little assist from Jayvee, Jaycee also finished the game with a team-high 15 points. Their team didn't get the win but they were definitely the winners of the game.
If you speak Filipino and want to learn more about the brothers and their basketball journey, check out this video from ABS-CBN News.

"I just feel a sense of shame," Japan's chef de mission Yasuhiro Yamashita told reporters. "We deeply apologize and intend to give the athletes thorough guidance from now on."
The basketball players had dinner after leaving the Games village last Thursday, August 16, and are believed to have been solicited by a pimp to go to a hotel with women, Yamashita added.
Back to Clarkson (who has no issue finding celebs and models to date), here's what Coach Yeng Guiao had to say about the Cavalier after the team's bounce-back win.
"He displayed his passing skills today," Said Guiao. "He made his teammates look good. He's a naturally good passer. He just let his teammates play this game. He found them when they were open and that really helped us in the breakaway in the third and fourth quarter."
The Philippines will play either Syria or Indonesia for a shot at fifth place in the Asian Games.

San Beda's Robert Bolick was inspired by all of the Kobe Bryant birthday videos being shared on Thursday because after his Kobe-esque 50-point masterpiece in a 98-79 victory against Arellano University, the 6'1" 2 x NCAA Philippines champion gave the 40-year-old Black Mamba a shout out.
"I have to give all my best, I'm a winner." Said Bolick. "It's Mamba day and everybody loves Kobe."
37 of those record-setting 50 came in the second half, which was just two less points than the entire opposing team.?He finished the game shooting 18-of-25 from the field, 5-of-9 from three and a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line in 33 minutes of action.
The 50 is the most points scored in Final Four era of the NCAA, topping John Wilson's decade old record by two points. The 50 also had Bolick's coach,?Boyet Fernandez, declaring a new day to celebrate after Mamba day.
“August 24 is Robert Bolick day,” said Fernandez.

]]>Earlier in the week, China legend and NBA cast away Jimmer Fredette exploded for 50 points (10 threes), 10 boards and 9 assists in a win vs Sichuan. As ridiculous as that may sound to some, the former BYU star nicknamed "Jimo Dashen (translates to "The Lonely God"), scored a ridiculous 73 in a game last season.
As an encore to his almost 50-point triple-double (which came after a 47-point night), Fredette exploded for 54 points (11 threes), 13 rebounds and 10 assists against Stephon Marbury's Beikong Fly Dragons today. During his hot performance, Fredette also got into a heated altercation with the 40-year old Starbury -- still averaging 17 points, 7 assists and 6 boards.
Usually when I post about former NBA players putting up monster numbers in China, people will respond with comments like "if that scrub can drop 50 in China then what would a superstar like LeBron or KD do?" I'm not calling anyone a scrub but I would have loved to have seen Kobe in China considering he once had an insane 50 point game streak in the NBA. This doesn't really count but the Black Mamba did put up 68 points (29-33 FG) in a charity game in China, back in 2012. And he only played 15 minutes.

]]>You have probably heard the name Shammgod and seen a "Shammgod crossover" more times than you have ever seen an actual play by the man the move was named after. The same man who taught Kobe Bryant how to improve his crossover. That man, or should I say God, is God Shammgod (formerly known as Shammgod Wells).
Thanks to this new "mini-documentary" from B/R, the world actually gets to see rare footage of the former McDonalds All-American, Providence star and New York legend with a bigger cult following than many of the most popular players in the basketball hall of fame. It sounds odd to say a 45th draft pick -- from the not-so-deep 1997 draft with Tim Duncan (#1) and Tracy McGrady (#9) -- who only lasted 20 games in the NBA has a bigger fanbase than many NBA greats, but via writers, bloggers, TV commentators, mixtape makers, barbershops and great NBA point guards, his name not only continues to live on, it gets bigger and more legendary every year.
In the doc, handle Gods like Jamal Crawford, Damian Lillard and Kyrie Irving talks about the "deadly" move while some of the best executions of the move -- from Chris Paul to Manu Ginobili to Markelle Fultz -- are shown.
"The move itself is so wicked." Says Jamal Crawford. "It's identifiable. You know it's his as soon as you see it. And I've seen people over the years try to imitate it but nobody can make it look the way he does."
There's also an interesting part about Shammgod's first encounter with Kobe Bryant and Kobe's dad asking him to give his son a few tips to make him a better ball handler. Here are a few clips of Kobe and his underrated handles in action.
#aMuseStory #truestory https://t.co/nPkdQTUpap
— Kobe Bryant (@kobebryant) June 20, 2015
The Shammgod is kind of like "Coke" and "Aspirin." You will hear people ask for a Coke when they are really asking for a soda and will settle with a Pepsi. People ask for aspirin but will take any Ibuprofen. Long before Shammgod pulled off the move in the 1997 NCAA regional finals vs Arizona, players in other countries were doing the move that's been called the"El Latigo" and "The Whip."
Many crossover connoisseurs credit 80's Croatian baller Danko "El Killer del Perimetro" Cvjeticanin as the inventor of the move but Dragan Kicanovic -- a Cibona teammate of the late great Drazen Petrovic and members of the FIBA Hall of Fame -- was doing it years earlier.
After them, came three-time EuroLeague Champion Dejan Bodiroga, who Carmelo Anthony is a little familiar with (21-second mark of the following video).
So, Shammgod might not have been the first or the "best" to do the move but he made it a household name. And just like Jamal Crawford said, "People over the years try to imitate it but nobody can make it look the way he does."

Speaking of female ankle bullies, here's a nice compilation of WNBA players -- including Cappie Pondexter, who has some pretty sick handles (just ask Sebastian Telfair) -- crossing and dropping defenders.

]]>Check out 2017 PBA All-Star Kevin Ferrer breaking a defender's ankles so bad?in the Williams Jones Cup, the defender from the Iraq basketball team had to be carried off the court like he was Paul Pierce. ?If that wasn't bad enough, the injury happened in the final two seconds of the game and Hussein Talib only had a turnover and three minutes of PT to his name. I guess he was just excited to be on the floor but who plays defense in the final two seconds of nine-point game.
Surprisingly, Ferrer's stat line wasn't much better: three points (0-0 fg), one rebound and one assists during 18 minutes of the win for the Philippines. Ballislife high-school favorite Kobe Paras had two points in seven minutes.
The play brought back memories of this bit of nastiness from a girls' high school basketball game.

]]>Three years ago, former Lousiville star Russ Smith was celebrating an 81-48 victory over UConn on senior day. Today, he's celebrating himself dropping 81 by himself in a 142-130 win in China. If pulling a Kobe in China wasn't crazy enough, he also flirted with a triple-double (8 boards and 7 assists), had 5 steals and connected on 10 of 17 from downtown. There's a reason why he's known as "Russdiculousness."
You might remember the 2014 second round pick of the 76ers from his short time with the Pelicans and Grizzlies between 2014 and 2016. No? Remember when he gave the Warriors a scare by scoring 16 of the Grizzlies 40 4th quarter points? No? How about when he knocked down 24 of 42 shots and set a D-League record with 65 points last year? Still no?
Well, you will probably know his name now. Before pulling a Kobe, he won the NBL Player of the Week award by averaging a league-high 56 points a game on 57% shooting.
I always call JR Smith the "Michael Jordan of China" because of his monster games -- like 52 points and 22 boards and 60 points (off the bench) with 14 threes -- during his limited time in China, so I guess I'm going to have call Russ the "Kobe of China" since "MJ" is taken and Kobe had an 81 point game and once dropped 60 against Smith's former Grizzlies team.
As we wait for video proof of what Smith is doing over in China, let's look back at some video proof of him doing some damage in the US.

]]>The 81 point "Salvador Dali" masterpiece will easily go down as the most memorable game in Kobe Bryant's career. How can you top 52 second half points, erasing an 18-point deficit in the third quarter and winning by 18 point? Years later, I still shake my head at the thought that Kobe was able to do this against NBA competition (insert Jalen Rose or post-Vince Carter Raptors joke here) and then I think about what he could possibly do against a bunch of amateurs??How about something crazy like 68 points on 29 for 33 shooting...in a half...a 16 minute half? Well, that's exactly what Kobe Bryant did during a charity game in China on August 18th of 2012. Don't believe me? Here's the man himself telling the story.
Kobe Bryant via his Facebook page.
The Sprite China 2nd Annual Charity Basketball game was a ton of fun. We played two 15 min halves with a running clock. I watched from the bench for the first half. We were trailing by 9 when I was notified that fans via text can choose a team to add 20 additional points to their tally!!! We were now down 29!! I wanted to play it cool but what the heck, the place was packed with fans who’d sang an early happy birthday to me and really wanted to watch me go to work. My teammates were down. They are all singers/actors and do not play ball much AT ALL, but they are very successful at what they do hence they are VERY competitive. They asked if I could bring them back in the second half..
I didn’t want to disappoint them or the fans that had paid their hard earned money for a show so I took the challenge of really using the second half as a training session for my stamina. I ran and ran and ran. I wound up scoring 68 in the 2nd and we won. Like I said, they are not basketball players by any stretch of the imagination. I was just having fun with all of them and loved hearing the crowd enjoy the show we put on.
His final stat line was 68 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist (must be a typo), 15 mins (29-33 FG, 10-11 FT)

]]>After sharing a video of Josh Smith going off for 41 points and 19 rebounds, while jacking up 18 3-pointers in a single game in China, I mentioned a few other former NBA players putting up Wilt like numbers in the CBA. One of those players is former Grizzlies' 2nd round pick Jamaal Franklin. He's on a triple-double tear right now that makes James Harden's numbers look cute (I know, I know, it's just a joke).
The latest triple-double explosion came in a triple-OT loss to the Liaoning Leopards, with Franklin racking up a mind-boggling 60 points, 12 rebounds and 21 assists! And like Josh Smith, he had the green light to fire as many 3s as he wanted, finishing with 6 of 23 shooting from downtown. He was so worn out from the workload, he reportedly collapsed after the game and had to be helped to the locker room.
This performance is coming right after him winning the CBA Player of the Week award and putting up....you aren't going to believe this...61 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in a game. Yes, you read that correctly and Franklin did have back-to-back triple-doubles with 60 points. He also had 10 3-pointers in this game.
After seven games, he's now averaging 42.1 points, 11 rebounds and 10.3 assists per game. The second highest scorer on the team is former NBA big man Samuel Dalembert with 16.1 points per game.
Before we get into some throwback vids of Franklin playing in the US, here's what "The James Harden of China" has done over his last five games.

]]>The post Josh Smith Attempted 18 3-Pointers In 1 Game After Missing All 5 In China Debut! appeared first on www.ebooksnet.com.
]]>To all you NBA players out there, who don't wanna be on a NBA team where the star players...all up in the highlight videos, and the coach all in your face telling you not to shoot so many damn 3-pointers....then come to China!
China might seem like death row for some basketball players but for many others, it's a place to put up Wilt Chamberlain like numbers and shoot more 3-pointers than Steph Curry, when your shot isn't much better than Ayesha Curry.
Last season in the CBA, we saw Jordan Crawford put up 72 points in a game and Michael Beasley was putting up 40+ games on a daily basis and scored 63 in the All-Star game. JR Smith once scored 52 points with 11 3-pointers and 22 rebounds, then a month later made 14 of 18 3-pointers in a single game...off the bench!
Former NBA player and CBA rookie Josh Smith must have thought he was JR Smith in his last game because he also launched 18 3-pointers. He only made seven of them but did have 41 points (14-27 fg, 6-11 ft), 19 rebounds and 5 blocks, off the bench, in a loss to former Lakers Yi Jianlian and Carlos Boozer of the Guangdongs.
The 41 points is more than Smith's last 10 games in the NBA combined and during that 10 games stretch, Smith was 5 of 33 from 3-point land. That cold streak continued into Smith's CBA debut last week: 0-5 from 3, 0-2 from the ft line and 3 of 13 from the field for 6 points.
I'm expecting at least 50 points and 20 3-point attempts from Smith in his 3rd game.
If you were wondering how a few other former NBA players are doing in China, in the past week, Jimmer Fredette had a 51 point game and Jamaal Franklin had a triple-double with 61 points....so which one of you Bad Boys in the NBA wants to go to Death Row.
Playing ball in China has Josh Smith feeling like he's back in high school.
And here's a throwback Wolves fans might remember.

]]>Did you know Kobe Bryant had a cousin that plays professional ball?
John Cox, son of former NBA player John "Chubby" Cox, whose sister is married to Kobe's dad, Joe "Jellybean" Bryant, is the Black Mamba's cousin and a member of the Venezuela team that took a 44 point beating by Team USA on Monday (and 35 point loss in a showcase game last month - video above).
Cox not only did a decent job of representing Venezuela with a team-high 19 points, he did a good job of repping his cousin by wearing Kobe sneakers and putting up way more shots than his teammates (20, which is twice as many as any teammate). His final stat line was 19 points in 32 minutes on 6 of 20 from the field, 2 of 5 from downtown and 5 of 7 from the free throw line.
Regardless of how many shots he took, Kobe tweeted how proud he was of his childhood friend and cousin, who was also an All-State high school player in Philly, during the game.
Unbelievable feeling watching my lil coz @zipzero33 on @NBCSports vs @usabasketball showing the world what he is capable of as a player

After the game, George wanted the internet to know that he didn't get crossed and released this statement via Bleacher Report: Don't believe in the hype Bleacher. I didn't get crossed. My shoes. Check out the shoes. I had too much grip.
As expected, the internet bought that excuse just as much as they bought Draymond Green's "I was hacked" excuse after his Snapchat mistake.

]]>Dammit Carmelo! You were supposed to catch, shoot and make the 3 from Kyrie Irving so this could have been a payback post. Let's back up a little.
Midway through the 2nd quarter with China only trailing by 26 points, Guo Ailun put Carmelo Anthony on skates, then drained a step-back 3-pointer that somehow made Reggie Miller think of Tony Parker. The ball was then inbounded to Kyrie Irving, he goes behind his back and crosses Guo before passing to Carmelo behind the 3-point line. Instead of pulling up for the contested 3 or making a move and taking a step-back-payback 3, Melo puts the ball on the ground, dribbles, gets fouled and then passes to a wide-open DeMar DeRozan, who shoots an airball after the whistle.
As disappointing as the end of this play was, it gives me an excuse to throw up this 2014 throwback video of James Harden getting his ankles broken vs Nigeria. Word is this is the day James Harden said "I'm done playing defense."

]]>Do you remember about 6 years ago when Kendrick Perkins was ejected for throwing a hard foul at Jason Maxiell? Probably not, that's why I included the video above. You can tell from the video clip that Maxiell has no issues turning into Mad Max when he feels disrespected; You can also tell from the clip that always mean-mugging Kendrick Perkins isn't afraid of anybody - partially because he's 6'10 and about 280 pounds.
CBA player Wu Ke is 6'10 but about 60 pounds less than 280 and definitely isn't as tough as Perkins, as evident by this amusing video clip of him running for his life after throwing a cheap shot foul at the 6'7 260 pound Mad Max.
Thankfully for Wu, his Flaming Bulls' teammate Michael "CBA All-Star Game MVP" Beasley was there to calm Maxiell down with a hug.
If the cheap shot wasn't enough to frustrate the 10 year NBA vet, Maxiell's team lost the game and are out of playoff contention with a pretty awful 8-26 record.
I think he needs more than a hug.

If that wasn't bad enough, the reason why she looked like she was already sucker punched before the cheap shot is because she was - in the previous game! ?And the cherry on top was she didn't even get a whistle to go with the black eye.
The WCBA did suspend the "girl" for the the cheap shot, but many believe it was only because of the media attention.

This past weekend, the Tigers Tübingen' Garlon Green - brother of NBA high-flyer Gerald Green - showed he also has some hops when he pulled off a dunk that would make a case for GOAT status....on Shaqtin' a Fool.
During the final moments in a game against Braunshweig, Green flew in to catch a missed a free throw and dunked it with authority. Unfortunately, the player shooting the free throw was on the other team, so Garlon just added 2 more points to his team's loss.
The good news is the German league is asking via Twitter if the former NCAA dunk contest contestant should be in their All-Star dunk contest. Hey, you got to look at the bright side of things!

After this GOAT-like performance, some people were calling Smith "The MJ of China." What made this label so fitting was Smith was wearing #23 in honor of Michael Jordan. Possession?
So how does the "MJ of China" top a performance like that or?live up to the nickname? Two months later, he connected on 14-of-18 from downtown and finished with 60 points....off the bench! He also had 8 rebounds and a game-high 6 steals because when you wear #23 you need to play defense too.
Smith would hang up the #23 and return to reality (the Knicks) later that year and that's when many of those pre-mentioned great moments and games happened.
But on this day, his birthday, I'm forgetting about what he's done in the NBA and celebrating the day(s) he was China's MJ.

Bogut and the Boomers' crew were just as unfazed after the spitting and beat New Zealand 71-59 with the help of some poor officiating.

]]>Early in the first quarter of the USA Basketball Showcase, Blake Griffin missed an uncontested 1 hand dunk!
He didn't miss much after that as he made 7 of his other 11 attempts. A couple of those other makes were vicious dunks including an off the backboard oop from Michael Carter-Williams in the 3rd. Of the 4 misses, 3 of them came from behind the 3 point line as Blake tried to show he could make them - he did make 1. He also finished with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in 22 minutes.
But the best Blake moment wasn't his missed dunk in front of Kenneth Farired or his move & dunk over Faried but when he told Faried he's a "snitch" and wearing a mic "so don't say anything reckless."

]]>Victor Oladipo was a highlight machine during Thursday's USA Basketball showcase game. The former NBA dunk contest contestant scored 25 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, dished out 5 assists, had 2 steals and 2 great plays on the man who beat him out for the Rookie of the Year award: Michael-Carter Williams.
The first play came with 3:50 minutes left in the 4th as Victor did a crossover and pulled up for a 3 in MCW's face. Then a minute later, he crossed MCW again and went down the middle for a dunk that had the bench on a woman behind the basket going crazy. It was almost a scene out of the new Kevin Durant/Zach LaVine Footlocker commercial "Eruption." Oladipo then put the cherry on top of the highlight by celebrating with a little shimmy that would make Antoine Walker (happy belated birthday) proud.
Oladipo also had a 360 earlier in the game which was nice but not as nice as his off the wall 360 in practice.
Cool, but let's take a few more looks at his cross and dunk on MCW again.
After the dunk Oladipo asked Blake Griffin if it was going to be on Sportscenter and Blake replied "yeah, it's going to be on Top 10."

]]>A couple of months after a devastating finals loss in the 2013 NBA Finals, Tracy McGrady announced that he was retiring from the NBA?during an episode of ESPN's First Take.
"It's been 16 years playing the game I love. I've had a great run but it's time for it to come to an end," said the 34 year old 7 x All-Star.
But it wasn't the end of his playing days - just his NBA days.
After a brief stint playing baseball with the Sugarland Skeeters, McGrady returned to China in 2014 with the USA Legends tour and gave the fans a show which ended with a game-winning 3.
In the summer of 2015, McGrady decided to give his fans in China one last show and to go out on a high note by having a farewell tour. McGrady played well - often scoring over 20 points a game - during the tour and his team finished with a perfrect 12-0 record. ?At the end of tour, his jersey was retired during an emotional ceremony dedicated to one of the best scorers in basketball history.
It may not be the Cinderella ending that would have came from winning a NBA champion but in terms of honoring the individual, this is a pretty great storybook ending.

Murray also had 6 assists (2 big ones in OT) and 4 rebounds during the contest which had a happy John Calipari tweeting "For someone his age to do what he did shows how good he is and why we wanted him in the worst way" after the game.
National team GM Steve Nash also had some high praise for Murray who said he needed a beer after surviving the game.
“He’s … got such balls and he’s not afraid of he moment,” Nash said of Murray “He embraces the moment and that’s why he’s very, very special.”
Murray on game-tying 3 in regulation: "After how much space he was giving me, it was kind of disrespectful."
