Before Latrell Sprewell was known as the $100 million man?just trying to?feed his kids, the Knick who almost delivered a championship to New York in 1999, and the Warrior who choked his coach in 1997, the All-NBA first-teamer was arguably a top three shooting guard in the league. He could shut down the league's best scorers or blow past any defender (even though he could only go right) and finish with an angry two-hand dunk that rivaled Charles Barkley's gorilla slams from his Philly days. He was that good and as unique as the spinning rims he made popular in 2001.

It's been 15 years since Spree unleashed the spinners on us and 11 years since the 5 x All-Star played an NBA game. For five years after that game, the only stories that appeared in the news about Spree were legal issues and then the next five were pretty much silence.

So where the hell has he been?

Back in July, one of my favorite angry comedian/actor/podcaster/director/celebrity hoopers, Michael Rapaport, visited Milwaukee and conducted a live interview with my favorite angry dunker and asked that question, along with every question I've wanted to ask him over the past 20 years.

I don't want to ruin any of the great and sometimes shocking moments in the must-listen interview, so I'm just going to list a few bullets.

• Sprewell didn't start playing organized ball until he was a senior in high school.
• Playing with Horry in college and against a young unstoppable Shaq
• Being drafted at #24 and making guards picked ahead of him pay

It's a must-listen for all fans of Sprewell, 90s basketball and/or Michael Rapaport.

Before we get into a bunch of throwback videos, here's an interesting bonus story from a friend of mine, who was Sprewell's college?roommate?and practice partner. He told me Spree was such a horrible shooter when he first came to Alabama that he would literally spend hours on just his jump shot, outside of practice, every morning.?I would say the hard work paid off because the once-unstoppable player on NBA Live 95 once hit 9-9 from the 3 point line.

Also worth bringing up is Allen Iverson praising Spree during a 1999 interview with Russ Bengtson of?Slam Magazine.

Really the only guy that flipped me out when I was on the same court with him was Sprewell. ’Cause if I could be any other basketball player, I would be Sprewell. What he did was foul, everybody know that, and I would never do no shit like that. I mean, I guess he just flipped out and snapped and he’s going to learn a lot from it and he’s a good dude, ’cause I know him as a person. But as far as talent, if I could be any other player, I wouldn’t be Michael Jordan, man. I wouldn’t take Michael Jordan’s game, I would take Latrell Sprewell’s game. I love the way he play. I love the way he play and he hard, hard on the court. You know, he might talk shit to you, he might not. He might give you 30 or 40 with a regular look on his face, like, “Whatever. This is what I do. That’s the way I play. I don’t gotta talk shit, ’cause I do this. I do this nightly. I don’t have to talk no shit to you to prove nothin’ to you.” But Spree, man. Spree’s something else.

SLAM: What is it? What is it about his game?

AI:?Energy. He can play the whole damn game. He got pride with his game, you know, And he just hard. When I look at him I see myself, ’cause he don’t care who you are, he just go at you. He go right at your chest, crazy, hard. He can shoot, he can run, he can dribble, he can jump. He’s smart, he know the game.

If not Sprewell, if I had a choice, it would be Shaq. I don’t think nobody could beat my team 10 to 15 times if Shaq was on my team. Never. I mean, that guy has talent that’s just unbelievable. He’s unbelievable. If I played with him, I don’t think nobody could beat me. I don’t know if you beat me in a series, but you won’t sweep me. That’s why I look at [the Lakers] and I’m like—Utah was a great team, Karl Malone, John Stockton did great, but you got Shaq on your team. How can you live with yourself knowing you got swept and you got Shaq on your team? Shhhh…

You may not know much about Herb Williams. Even if you watched basketball in the 90s, you probably still wouldn't know much about the guy. But if you were watching this Bulls & Knicks game from the 90s, you probably felt really bad for him. In a short stretch of just four minutes, he was DUNKED ON 4 TIMES: once by Pippen, once by Pete Myers and twice by Horace Grant!

Mutombo once said, "When you get dunked on, you know you are going to be on all the nightly highlights shows." I'm pretty sure Herb was thinking that after Pip dunked on him, less so after Pete, and then said, "f**k it, who cares" after Ho Grant got him...twice.

WHO IS HERB WILLIAMS

Herb was a first round pick of the Pacers in 1981 who spent some time with the Mavs and Raptors, but is mainly known as a solid backup for Patrick Ewing during his Knicks days in the early to mid 90s. He also spent a few years as an assistant coach for the Knicks and is now an assistant coach for the New York Liberty.

I"m pretty positive Kobe Bryant's favorite athlete isn't coming to Orlando to watch any Summer League games but the 5th pick of the draft has been one of the most exciting players to watch in the first few days of the league. He made a big splash in his debut with 12 points and a game-winning 3 in OT against the Clippers.

On Monday, he posted 14 points which included 2 more 3-pointers and a couple of memorable dunks. The best being this poster dunk against the Thunder.

I'm looking forward to seeing what he does for another encore and obviously what he's going to be able to do against respected veterans during the regular season, but I don't think the cocky rookie is too concerned about respected veterans.

Andre Iguodala had the dunk of game 2 when he threw down over Dwight Howard and made an excited Steph Curry almost run to the other end of the court in celebration. ?For an encore, Iggy trolled the Rockets by waiting for the defense to cross half court before throwing down a wide-open dunk.

This reminds me of an actual fight I once saw when a friend of mine was playing Madden 97 (yes this story takes place during the MJ era) against a hot head. My friend waited for the other player to get near him before scoring a touchdown and then it got ugly. ?Thankfully no punches were thrown after this moment, although i'm sure the 35 point loss felt like a punch to the gut to Rockets' fans.

36 year old Dirk Nowitzki didn't score 41 points like Westbrook, didn't cross anybody like Steph, or posterize any defenders but he did have the play and dunk of the night during Sunday's All-Star game. In one single epic play, Dirk  channeled Michael Jordan by catching an oop with his tongue sticking out and channeled his ex-teammate Vince Carter by pointing up to the sky after the dunk the same way Vince did in the 2000 NBA dunk contest. .

“We were actually joking Coach was going to write up an alley-oop play for him,” said Steph Curry, who threw the lob. “But he needed to get loose. When that play happened, when I threw it, I saw him at the last second. I didn’t know who it was.

“When I made my mind to throw it up, I looked to see who it was. I already committed to throwing it. I just hoped he could get up there, and he did.”

As great as it was seeing Dirk catch his first lob since 2004, Steph enjoyed the Vinsanity tribute more.

“The celebration was even better than the dunk, pulling out the old Vince Carter celebration. So that was pretty clever.”

"Hey, that's what I do," Nowitzki jokingly said to Marc Stein in an ESPN Radio interview about his oop. “The guys are killing me. They said the last alley-oop I had was in the Hoop Summit in '98. It was great. Steph lobbed it up for me. He kept it nice and low, below the rim for me to get it."

During the post game interview Dirk also said he was "happy" because he "got a dunk and a 3."

Whether he knows it or not, he did a whole lot more than that,  What Dirk did was sum up what All-Star weekend should be - a time to have fun, honor the stars before you and inspire the ones who will be NBA stars in the future.

New Griz Jeff Green could have had a Scottie Pippen over Patrick Ewing moment but instead went with the Iverson step over Tyronne Lue moment.

In the 3rd quarter of Memphis' win over the Orlando Magic on Friday, Jeff Green scored 2 of his team-high 21 points on a dunk on Victor Oladipo which knocked Dipo to the ground.  Green gave him a quick stare and then stepped over his legs the way Iverson did Lue in the NBA finals. He could have walked all the way over Ewing the way Pip did in the playoffs but you all remember how mad Ewing got.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist's shooting form is as ugly and nasty as anything you will see in the NBA - that includes nasty dunks like the one Tobias Harris had on MKG during the first quarter of Saturday's game between the Hornets and Magic.

Good news for MKG is his team got the win and he put up a nice line with 17 points and 12 rebounds.  Quite a few of those 17 points came on MKG's much improved jumper.  He worked with one of the greatest shooters of all-time, Mark Price, in the summer and the results are paying off.

There's absolutely no truth to this statement and I have no evidence of this but I believe when your first NBA bucket is a memorable one than you are going to have a great career. With that said, even if Julius Randle's first bucket wasn't a poster dunk on some guy named Jusuf Nurkic, I'm comfortable saying he's going to have a great career.

In his preseason debut, the Laker rookie had 10 points (5-9 fg) and 8 rebounds in 27 minutes. I'm also comfortable drafting Randle a round or two early in my fantasy leagues because I'm also betting he's going to be a dependable double double machine.

Everybody knows that rookie games turn into dunk exhibitions in the final minute and in the final 20 seconds of the 2012 Rising Stars game, John Wall stopped at the 3 point line to throw himself a lob for one last slam dunk contest worthy dunk.  Wall tossed the ball up and started to run after the ball but as soon as it bounced, Detroit's Greg Monroe stole it and threw a full court pass to one of his teammates for a wide open dunk.  The crowd and announcers responded with boos and Kenny Smith said "Greg, you better not do that again."

"It was just a joke," Monroe said about the steal. "He got another shot at it. The game was over so it wasn't a big deal... I thought about it right when I did it. It was real quick. I was thinking about letting him go but then ..."

Wall was fine with Monroe's joke but also joked that it's going to come back and haunt him one day.

"I was going to try the between-the-legs," Wall said. "I've never tried that before. He stole the ball. He messed my up my rhythm. It's just fun. Don't get mad at him for it. He did it so I'm going to try to dunk on him when we play them."

They have played many games since that event, including a game earlier in the year when Greg Monroe dunked on Wall, but during the opening minutes of last night's game, Wall was able to serve up some revenge for that 2012 night by posterizing Monroe with a left hand jam.

Unfortunately for the Wizards, they weren't able to beat the Pistons despite a game high 34 points from Wall but I'm sure Wall get his revenge again.

I know the lights were out so it was tough seeing Paul George's 2nd round dunk in the 2012 NBA Dunk Contest but the dunk he did was a 360 windmill reminiscent of Vince Carter's 360 from the 2000 NBA dunk contest. ?Here's the funny thing about that dunk and Paul George's performance that night. ?It was a great dunk and he was great at the event but since he wasn't perceived to be a "great player" yet, the average sports fan didn't care. ?The average sports fan that's critical of the NBA dunk contest and wants to see Kobe and LeBron go at it in the ever changing event rather see great players do average dunks than "average" players do great dunks. ?This is why up and comer Paul George's dunk contest performance was unappreciated and why MVP contender Paul George's dunk last night is a tad overrated.

Up by 20 against the Clippers in the 4th quarter, Paul George got a steal and had half of the court to himself to throw down any type of dunk he wanted for the home crowd. ?He decided on the 360 windmill dunk that Vince Carter made famous in 2000 and George has done so many times in the past couple of years. ?The bench went crazy, the fans went crazy, the internet went crazy and a Vine video went viral first. ?Then the early YouTube cappers put it out and every blog rushed to put up the video with a one liner. ?Then the animated gifs came along with tons of people on Twitter calling it the best dunk of the year and other saying he should be in the NBA dunk contest.

Well, as already mentioned, George has already competed in the NBA dunk contest and declined to participate in it again. ?But for those people that would like to see George throw down that dunk again or a better variation of it in the future, I'm going to take you backwards and show you how many times he's already done it.

July of 2011, a relatively unknown Paul George was throwing down dunks at the UCLA gym with JaVale McGee, Ryan Hollins and Nick Young (ignore the video title that says Blake Griffin was there because he wasn't). There was windmills, off the glass dunks, elbow hangs but the best dunk was by Paul George who did a 360 windmill variation by going baseline and dunking it from under the rim.

At the 2002 NBA dunk contest, we were robbed of seeing some great dunk because Paul George was robbed. Paul George's first dunk was one over 7'2 teammate Roy Hibbert but fans complained Roy ducked a little and served a launchpad. Then George executed a perfect 360 windmill in the dark while wearing glow in the dark clothing. ?Granted, it was hard for us to full appreciate it because we couldn't see the dunk that well but imagine how hard it was for George to pull off ?a dunk, that people are calling the best of the year, when he could barely see. Due to the horrible formatting of the dunk contest, George was eliminated and our friend Jeremy Evans beat out last minute replacement Chase Budinger.

Later that year, August of 2002, Paul George and a bunch of other high flying NBA players like JR Smith, DeMar DeRozan, Dorrell Wright, Terrence Williams and John Wall played in a highlight filled Drew League game. that was highlighted by a 360 windmill dunk by Paul George.

Later that month, George joined LeBron James, Rudy Gay and Amare Stoudemire on a trip to China to participate in the Nike+ Festival of Sport event at Shanghai Stadium. ?Most fans were there just to see LeBron and maybe get a free pair of LeBron X sneakers but the highlight of the event was seeing Paul George throw down a 360 between the legs windmill. ?The dunk was so crazy that LeBron had to tweet about it.

When news got back to the states about George's ability to pull off this dunk that people have only seen on YouTube by famous dunkers like Kenny Dobbs, people started realizing how many great dunks they were robbed of when George wasn't able to do more than 2 dunks in the NBA dunk contest.

Atleast Pacers fans that were able to attend the 2012 Fan Jam event later that year were treated to some of those dunks. ?George, Lance Stephenson, Miles Plumlee and Gerald Green competed in an exceptional dunk contest that was highlighted by none other than Paul George who executed the 360 between the legs dunk that had LeBron so impressed.

The next sighting for a variation of this dunk was in Vegas during the Team USA mini-camp. Earlier this week, Paul George did an interview with FIBA.com and said one of his goals for 2014 is to play with Team USA. "It is always special to represent your country and it would be an honor for me to help Team USA win titles. I would like to win NBA titles, but I would also like to win gold medals." I'm sure he will get his shot at winning a gold medal and from the way he and the Pacers are playing, they seem to have a great shot at a NBA title, but for right now, the day after throwing down another 360 windmill, it looks like he's just going to have to settle for the title of "Best Dunk of the Year."
