The post POY Tracker: Wide Open Race! appeared first on www.ebooksnet.com.

As the season heads to its home stretch, the race for National Player of the Year is still wide open. There are five elite players among 19 vote-getters with a legitimate chance to earn Mr. Basketball USA honors, led by sophomore forward Cameron Boozer of Columbus (Miami, Fla.). The updated balloting shows the senior (2023) class still has something to prove and also shows what's portrayed by mainstream media outlets is not what scouts necessarily feel behind closed doors.

RELATED: All-Time Mr. Basketball USA Winners?| Preseason?2022-23 Mr. Basketball USA Tracker?| How To Make A HS Version Of March Madness?

Just as there is no dominant team in this season's FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com, there is no one dominant player in the country who outshines the rest as the latest Mr. Basketball USA Tracker powered by www.ebooksnet.com shows. The nation's elite individual talent has been identified, as far as having the most productive 2022-23 season is concerned, but among the 19 top national player of the year candidates there is no consensus as to whom is the best or most dominant.

Of the 19 candidates who appeared on the ballots of the 10-man Mr. Basketball USA Panel, eight received a first place (10 points) or second place vote (nine points). Six players earned at least one first place vote, with sophomore forward Cameron Boozer of FAB 50 No. 6 Columbus (Miami, Fla.) the top vote-getter with 70 overall points, besting USC-point senior point guard Isaiah Collier of FAB 50 No. 36 Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.) by two points and Kentucky-bound shooting guard D.J. Wagner of FAB 50 No. 10 Camden (N.J.) by eight points. Wagner was the leading vote-getter in the preseason (with 71 points) when garnered four of the 10 first place votes. He earned two in the latest voting, two second place votes and 62 total points.

The other candidates to receive first place are Texas-bound forward Ronald Holland of FAB 50 No. 4 Duncanville (Duncanville, Texas), Kentucky-bound Justin Edwards of Imhotep Charter (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Michigan State-bound forward Xavier Booker of Cathedral (Indianapolis, Ind.). Holland came in fourth place over all with 54 points, Edwards in fifth with 52 votes overall, while Booker appeared on two overall ballots, finishing first on one and third on the other for 18 total points.

Three things stand out with the voting results. One, Boozer is a sophomore and no tenth-grader has ever been named Mr. Basketball USA or a consensus national player of the year. Not Lew Alcindor, not LeBron James, no one, so the company Boozer is keeping is worth nothing. Two, Boozer's point total would represent a number significantly lower than the average total of the eventual annual honoree, who is often above 90 points overall. Not one single candidate, not even Boozer or Collier, appeared on all ten ballots. Three, the senior class still hasn't established a true pecking order and the ones who are most popular on social media, particularly Bronny James of Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) and Mikey Williams of San Ysidro (Calif.), did not receive any votes. James was named a McDonald's All-American, to the 13-man USA Team for the Nike Hoop Summit and is being pegged by ESPN as a 2024 NBA lottery pick.

One player who is certainly being rewarded for his senior season of high school is Oregon-bound point guard Jackson Shelstad of FAB 50 No. 20 West Linn (West Linn, Ore.). He did not appear on any preseason ballots, but appeared on four ballots this time around, including a second-place vote, for 25 overall points. Shelstad has been selected for the Nike Hoop Summit.

"With the obvious conclusion that this 2023 class has not met expectations, it is apparent that the creme of the current high school talent rests with several talented underclassmen with Cameron Boozer being exhibit A," said panel member Dinos Trigonis, Nothing But Net Magazine publisher and Pangos All-American Camp director. "While Boozer does not give max effort 100 percent of the time, his displays of dominance signals the arrival of a special player to track.

"What's also apparent here, as the voting results show, is the obvious disconnect between the day-to-day regional and local scouts and some of the national media, particularly ESPN. They have anointed players to "can't miss" status based on celebrity rather than accomplishment."

It's no secret that the 2023 class has been considered one of the weakest ones nationally in recent memory, in terms of NBA Draft prospects and projected collegiate impact. That is reflected in the voting totals of the latest Mr. Basketball USA Tracker. What is also apparent is the end-of-season playoff games and the national all-star circuit will hold as much importance as it has had in many seasons, in terms of individual accomplishment and honors and deciding whom are the best bets to standout at the next levels of the game.

This wide open Mr. Basketball USA race will be fun to track over the next month and a half.

About Mr. Basketball USA Tracker Panel
www.ebooksnet.com's panel of 10 experts, which includes five McDonald’s All-American selection committee members, casts its vote for the top national player of the year candidates. Each panelist lists his top seven candidates regardless of class. The votes are then tabulated on a 10-point scoring system with a first-place vote equaling 10 points, a second-place vote earning nine points and down to four points for a seventh-place vote. The number in parenthesis refers to the numbers of ballots on which a player appeared and previous rankings refers to position in last season's final tracker.

What’s going on Ballislife fam? I just wanted to give a quick introduction of myself, as I am the latest member to join the Ballislife editorial team. My name is Rodger Bohn and I have been covering basketball full time for the past 17 years. I have done work with Rivals.com, DraftExpress, and am still contributing at SLAM. I also own and operate an NCAA Certified Scouting Service and consult with three NBA teams.

I was the assistant director of Ohio Basketball Club (formerly Cleveland Basketball Club) for five years on the Adidas circuit and the program still has produced more NBA players than anyone in the state of Ohio. I’ve born and raised in Cleveland (have it tatted all over my body), but the journey that is the game of basketball has taken me to a number of cool spots that a poor kid from CLE would have never imagined going. I spent time living in North Carolina (all throughout Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill), Norfolk, and Houston (working for John Lucas). My latest stop in life is Minneapolis.

Amidst the insane weather and flight chaos that we had in this country, I was one of the casualties. After covering the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas, I had plans of shooting to Atlanta and Chicago to cover a few other high school games. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out and I had to reroute all of my travel to simply make it back to Minneapolis for Christmas. Furthermore, I was hoping to make it to South Carolina for post Christmas events, but flight cancellations didn’t make it worthwhile for me to literally just roll down for a day or two.

That being said, this introductory piece is going to be on some of the local Minnesota talent that I’ve seen over the past three weeks. January is going be a pretty crazy travel month for me, so I’m definitely going to have much more on the national level for Bilateral readers moving forward.

Here are a few of the top guys who I have seen in Minnesota post Christmas:

Casmir “Cash” Chavis, 6’3, PG, Park Center HS (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), 2024
The leading scorer (20 points per game) for the best team in the state, Chavis has been getting it done far more than his team’s official 5-0 record reflects. His squad has quality wins over both Minnesota Prep and West Oaks Academy (FL) of the Grind Session, but games had to be counted as “exhibitions” due to Minnesota state rules. Chavis, who was the leading scorer for J-Sizzle 17U on the Adidas 3SSB circuit, is a lockdown on ball defender who is an elite finisher and continually developing playmaker. Sitting at No. 48 in the latest Ballislife FAB 50 national rankings, Chavis and Co. are the favorites to repeat as state champions in Minnesota.

Nolan Winter, 6’10, PF, Lakeville North HS (Minn.), 2023
The state’s best jumbo sized shooter, Winter is producing at a high level for Lakeville North and his team’s success has followed. The Wisconsin recruit is averaging 19.7 points and 12.3 rebounds per game for a 6-1 team that has only lost to the state’s top ranked team (Park Center). The prototypical new age forward, Winter utilizes his size against smaller defenders on the block, yet also has the athleticism and agility to blow by slower defenders on the perimeter. Nolan may not be done growing yet either, as his father (Trevor) is a true 7-footer who played for the Timberwolves back in the day himself.

Jayden Moore, 6’0, PG, Hopkins HS (Minnetonka, Minn.), 2026
If you’ve followed any semblance of middle school basketball over the past few years, you’re probably familiar with Moore. He’s been playing varsity for one of Minnesota's most storied programs since seventh grade. He also played up two years for J Sizzle (Jalen Suggs’ AAU team) on the Adidas 3SSB circuit. A super heady PG, Moore is also a dynamic scorer, dropping 34 points, 10 assists, and 6 rebounds in the Augsburg Holiday Classic. He already holds a West Virginia offer, has an outstanding change of pace, and has made himself a more versatile guard with an improved jumper. Moore is sitting at the top of Minnesota’s 2026 class and that doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon.

Anthony Smith III, 6’1, combo guard, Hopkins HS (Minnetonka, Minn.), 2025
One of the more improved guys in the state of Minnesota, Smith III is certifying himself as serious D1 prospect. He dropped 34 points (including 7 three pointers), six assists, five rebounds, and four steals at the Augsburg Holiday Classic. The D1 Minnesota product (plays on Adidas 3SSB circuit) is a serious shooter with no shortage of confidence. Owning an offer from George Mason, Smith is a guy who could be adding plenty more once college coaches see the growth in his game during the live period in April.

Jack Janicki, 6’5, SG, White Bear Lake HS (Minn.), 2023
Janicki could legitimately be the best division one walk on in America. Turning down more than a dozen D1 offers, Janicki opted to go to Wisconsin as a preferred walk on, and has the potential to play there right away. The lefty shooting guard is exceptionally crafty, scores the ball at a high rate with a limited amount of dribbles, and throws defenders off with his change of pace. He is a fiery competitor who showed that he could hold his own on the national level running with D1 Minnesota on the Adidas 3SSB circuit, and is trending to do the same thing in the Big Ten at Wisconsin.

C.J. O’Hara, 6’4, SG, Park Center HS (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), 2023
One of the most versatile defenders in the state, O’Hara is the defensive catalyst for undefeated Park Center. O’Hara proved himself to be a legitimate D1 prospect with his play against both West Oaks (FL) and Minnesota Prep, but has continued in the state high school season by posting 20 points per game. The combination of productivity and defensive versatility that he offers make him the state’s best unsigned perimeter player in the class of 2023.

Kyle Jorgensen, 6’9, C, Minneapolis Washburn (Minneapolis, Minn.), 2024
Arguably the best player in the Minneapolis City League, Jorgensn is simply having a monster start to his junior season, posting 24 points and 14 rebounds per night. The skilled big man has outstanding footwork on the block, can step out and shoot it from three, and uses his frame to finish through contact. Still under the radar, Jorgensen is starting to attract interest from D1 programs throughout the Midwest.

The post 1st Regular Season FAB 50: NEW No. 1! appeared first on www.ebooksnet.com.

]]>
There was a full slate of holiday showcases and tournaments over Thanksgiving weekend and the results caused plenty of change in the first edition of the FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com for the 2022-23 season. The highest ranked among seven newcomers is No. 32 Wasatch Academy (Mt. Pleasant, Utah) as NIBC play tipped-off in Utah last week. NIBC results also create a new No. 1, as previous No. 4 AZ Compass Prep (Chandler, Ariz.) takes over the top spot after becoming FAB 50 eligible for the first time this season.

By Ronnie Flores

As we stated in the preseason, this year's crop of elite teams and players have plenty to prove. One of the reasons we put Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) at preseason No. 1 in the FAB 50 was its track record. Sure coach Kevin Boyle has talent at his disposal, but so do other top ranked teams, particularly those in the National Interscholastic Basketball Conference (NIBC). It also helped that the Eagles captured the Top Flight Invitational bracket at The Border League in Las Vegas in October. In that title game, Montverde Academy edged AZ Compass Prep (Chandler, Ariz.) in overtime and downed Centennial (Corona, Calif.) in the semifinals. But the most prominent reason the program began at No. 1 is its success when it reached the pinnacle of high school basketball. Montverde has repeatedly won big games while ranked No. 1 and has a 26-5 record all-time at GEICO Nationals over the years.

Based on the results so far this season, it's an easy call to move up preseason No. 4 AZ Compass Prep (Chandler, Ariz.) to No. 1 after the Dragons downed Montverde Academy, 65-54, in their first-ever NIBC regular season game on November 22. Coach Ed Gipson's club cemented the move by downing preseason No. 2 Sunrise Christian Academy (Bel Aire, Kan.) the next evening at The 5 For The Fight National Hoopfest in Utah, 53-47, to move its current season record to 7-0. Beating the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams on back-to-back nights for a program eligible for the FAB 50 for the first time is a remarkable feat and the challenge for Gipson and his staff and players will be retaining the top spot in the?FAB 50 National Team Rankings?powered by?www.ebooksnet.com?.

Cincinnati-bound Rayvon Griffith had a terrific game versus Montverde Academy with 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. It was a total team effort, as four other AZ Compass players scored at least eight points, while the defense forced 17 Montverde Academy turnovers and scored 17 points off those turnovers. The next night against Sunrise Christian, point guard Jordan Ross led the way offensively with 10 points (including 8-of-9 free throw attempts). Once again, however, it was the defensive effort that told the story, as the Dragons scored 19 points off 15 Buffaloes turnovers. Simply put, AZ Compass plays with the necessary defensive intensity to not only be the No. 1 ranked team in the country, but to stay the No. 1 ranked team in the country in a season in which it will face tough competition on a nightly basis.

"Last week in Utah was a great week for our program, as we captured two big wins to start our inaugural season in the NIBC," said AZ Compass Prep Director Pete Kaffey. "Our players and coaching staff are looking forward to going to Kansas this week to win two big NIBC games to stay undefeated.”

The game against Sunrise Christian was a "trap game" for AZ Compass Prep, as the Buffaloes were coming off a surprising 56-55 loss to regionally-ranked and FAB 50 bubble club American Fork (American Fork, Utah). Perhaps the Buffaloes missed a healthy Ohio State-bound Scotty Middleton more than would have been expected before the game, but the first big rankings question of the season was what to do with Sunrise Christian Academy after it lost on back-to-back nights. We decided to drop them seven spots to No. 9 because of the closeness of the game with AZ Compass Prep and because of the upcoming games versus a plethora of ranked foes. Coach Luke Barnwell's club looks to get on track at the Air Capital Hoopfest this week in Wichita, Kan. At some point, the American Fork result will become more prominent of a FAB 50 factor depending on how well that club and the Buffaloes play in the weeks and months to come.

Preseason No. 1 Montverde Academy drops to No. 2 after it bounced back from the loss to AZ Compass Prep with a 85-42 victory over Pleasant Grove (Utah).

The top newcomer this week is another NIBC club. Wasatch Academy (Mt. Pleasant, Utah) jumps in at No. 32 after defeating American Fork, 69-64, one night after that club upset Sunrise Christian Academy. Four players scored in double-figures for the Tigers led by senior forward Osiris Grady with 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field and 6-of-8 from the line. Over the weekend, Wasatch Academy traveled down to Atlanta for the Holiday Hoopgiving and came away with two victories, including a resounding 60-36 win over new No. 40 McEachern (Powder Springs, Ga.). South Carolina commit Collin Murray-Boyles played well and the backcourt duo of senior R.J. Jones (Kansas St.) and sophomore Isiah Harwell are off to a hot start for coach Paul Peterson's club.

The margin in the Wasatch Academy-McEachern result is significant because McEachern played FAB 50 No. 6 Duncanville (Duncanville, Texas) fairly tough (78-69) one game after knocking off preseason No. 35 Grovetown (Grovetown, Ga.), 88-80. Duncanville, meanwhile, had beaten four teams in its five games that were either ranked in the preseason or currently ranked, including a 59-57 victory on Saturday over No. 8 Centennial (Corona, Calif.) at the Thanksgiving Hoopfest at Sandra Meadows Memorial Arena at Duncanville. The Panthers, who finished No. 1 in the FAB 50 last season before being stripped of their University Interscholastic League (UIL) Class 6A state title by Texas' governing body for high school athletics, put together a terrific defensive effort in the closing minutes against the defending California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) open division champs. Duncanville didn't allow a field goal attempt on Centennial's final possession and also got a big fourth quarter from Texas-bound and Mr. Basketball USA candidate Ronald Holland, who finished with 24 points. Duncanville, which will not participate in the UIL playoffs, faces No. 41 Bartlett (Bartlett, Tenn.) in its next game December 2.

The performances of regionally-ranked Durango (Las Vegas, Nev.) at the Thanksgiving Hoopfest and Coronado (Henderson, Nev.) at the O'Dowd Thanksgiving Showcase in Oakland, Calif., over the weekend helped defending NIAA Class 5A state champ Liberty (Henderson, Nev.) break into the FAB 50 at No. 43 as the second-ranked NIAA club behind No. 15 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.). Durango won two games against solid Texas clubs and Coronado downed previous No. 27 Modesto Christian (Modesto, Calif.), 78-70, behind a 26-point effort from UCLA recruit Sebastian Mack. The next evening in Oakland, he hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer in a 55-53 win over Salesian (Richmond, Calif.). Coronado faces No. 27 Simeon (Chicago) at Hoophall West in Arizona on December 10.

Durango, Liberty, Bishop Gorman, and Coronado wil all participatie in the Platinum Bracket at the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas, December 19-22. The field also includes new No. 47 Oak Cliff Faith Family (Dallas, Texas) and No. 35 West Ranch (Valencia, Calif.), which downed No. 37 Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) by two points, 66-64, on November 19. Notre Dame handed Modesto Christian its second loss in two nights, 98-72, at the NorCal Tip-Off Classic in Dublin, Calif.

Liberty and new No. 36 Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.) were the "first two out" of the preseason rankings. Gonzaga gives the powerful Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) three FAB 50 ranked teams with long-time FAB 50 mainstay DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, Md.) also a contender. DeMatha Catholic faces Notre Dame in Southern California on December 3.

The next FAB 50 update is scheduled for Monday, December 12.

Pangos: Yves Thierry Ouwe Missi? Oh Yes! http://www.ebooksnet.com/pangos-yves-thierry-ouwe-missi-oh-yes/ http://www.ebooksnet.com/pangos-yves-thierry-ouwe-missi-oh-yes/#respond Tue, 07 Jun 2022 08:32:27 +0000 https://bilcomprd.wpengine.com/?p=261911 Yves Missi (left) is top breakout performer of 2022 Pangos A-A Camp.

The post Pangos: Yves Thierry Ouwe Missi? Oh Yes! appeared first on www.ebooksnet.com.

]]>
The 2022 Pangos All-American Camp, the 20th edition of the top-notch summer individual showcase event, may not have the elite star power of some of the previous editions, but there have been many breakout?performers?and fast-rising prospects. The top breakout performer is big man Yves Thierry Ouwe Missi, a 2024 pivot from West Nottingham Academy (Colora, Md.).

Over the past 20 years, the annual Pangos All-American Camp has showcased some of the biggest talents in high school basketball. Names such as Harden, Simmons, Ayton and countless other big-time NBA players have suited up at the showcase camp that traditionally tip offs the summer evaluation period. Since 2018, camp director Dinos Trigonis has upped the ante by having his marquee individual event certified for NBA scouts to evaluate.

This year 25 NBA teams sent representatives to evaluate some of the league's future talent and although the event lacks some of the "sure-fire pro" star power of past camps, there have been plenty of breakout stars and veteran camp participants that will be elite college and contributing NBA players in due time.

The clear breakout performer of this camp is 2024 big man Yves Thierry Ouwe Missi, a 6-foot-11 talent from West Nottingham Academy (Colora, Md.). He goes by Yves Missi, but regardless of what the Centre, Cameroon native is called on social media post or in published stories, one word sums him up: talent! In fact, Missi might be the camp's biggest breakout performer since Ben Simmons came to the camp as a rising sophomore in the summer of 2012 and wowed with his size, passing and feel. The native of Australia went to Montverde Academy (Fla.) that following winter and was named by www.ebooksnet.com as the high school player of the 2010s.

Missi may not have a Simmons type of impact on the high school game, but he's leaving an indelible mark on this camp. Missi is a workhorse underneath with a frame that screams upside and a toolbox that leads to rapid development. He is also producing, even coming up with a spectacular block to save a game for his camp team. Two of the three major recruiting networks do have Missi ranked and the third doesn't have him among its published top 60. Through the camp's first two days, Missi rates as a top five performer.

The early clubhouse favorite for camp Most Outstanding player is Xavier Booker, a 6-foot-11 2023 prospect out of Cathedral (Indianapolis, Ind.). Booker would be a terrific prospect with his frame, fluidity, bounce and skill level alone, but the separator is his shooting range. He has a terrific left-handed stroke and his shooting mechanics will never be confused for those Richie Adams (UNLV) and Walter Berry (St. John's) possessed. Like those two college standouts from yesteryear, Booker could develop into a collegiate All-American...and more.

Booker's shot is pure and he had it going on Sunday evening in a prime-time matchup with Baye Fall, a 6-foot-11 prospect from Accelerated Schools (Denver, Col.) who is considered one of the best prospects in the national Class of 2023. Booker continued to light it up on Saturday and showed why he could challenge for the top spot in the national class of 2023 when it's all said and done in the Spring of next year. Not bad for a young man who came off the bench for Cathedral as a sophomore, had zero offers just over a year ago, plays for independent travel club George Hill All-Indy and was a Cream of the Crop Top 60 selection at last year's camp.

Michigan St., Indiana, Ohio St., and Illinois have Booker as a priority. ?Some recruiting experts believe the Spartans have the inside track. At Pangos, Booker is playing for camp team "Duke" and the Blue Devils are now eyeing Booker. Can John Scheyer wrestle him away from Big Ten country?

Some of the other top national breakout performers at the camp include 6-foot-7 2024 power forward Pharaoh Compton of AZ Compass Prep (Chandler, Ariz.) and 6-foot-4 2024 shooting guard Robert Hinton of Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood).

Other top front court performers include Alabama-bound Sam Walters, a 6-foot-9 2023 from Villages School (The Villages, Fla.), James Brown, a 6-foot-10 2024 from St. Rita (Chicago, Ill.), Jayden Williams, a 6-foot-9 2024 from Brookwood (Snellville, Ga.), and Duke-bound Sean Stewart, a 2023 from Windermere Prep (Windemere, Fla.)

Guards Galore At Pangos

At the 2021 Pangos All-American Camp, some injuries and selfish attitudes caused a minor point guard shortage. That is clearly not the case at the 2022 edition, as there are an abundance of lead guards with the tools to not only perform well at the three-day event, but run collegiate clubs in the near future as well.

The competition will be fierce for one of the coveted guard spots in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 game at the camp's conclusion, which will be reserved for the top performers after four rounds of camp games for each of the 12 teams.

Some of the top candidates to be selected include, but are not limited to, Rob Wright, a 6-foot 2024 from Neumann-Goretti (Philadelphia, Pa.), Michigan St.-bound Jeremy Fears, a 6-foot-2 2023 from La Lumiere (La Porte, Ind.) and his high school teammate Aden Holloway, a 6-foot 2023 prospect. Other lead guard standouts include Oregon-bound Jackson Shelstad, a 6-foot-1 2023 from West Linn (Ore.), D.J. Thomas, a 6-foot-1 2024 from Liberty (Henderson, Nev.) and Elliot Cadeau, a 6-foot-1 2024 from Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.).

Among the wing guard prospects, Marvel Allen, a 6-foot-4 2023 from Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.), Devin Royal, a 6-foot-6 2023 from Pickerington Central (Pickerington, Ohio), Ian Jackson, a 6-foot-6 2024 from Cardinal Hayes (Bronx, N.Y.), Wesley Yates, a 6-foot-4 2023 from Beaumont United (Beaumont, Texas), Tru Washington, a 6-foot-4 2023 from Mountain Pointe (Phoenix, Ariz.), Isaiah Elohim, a 6-foot-5 2024 from Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) and Dylan Harper, a 6-foot-5 2024 from Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) have all made noise.

The major buzz of Saturday's games was made by Cadeau, when he closed out the second-to-last camp game on court one with a thunderdous tomahawk dunk over the top of Jazz Gardner, a 2023 7-foot center from West Ranch (Valencia, Calif.). Cadeau missed most of his sophomore high school season with injury, but has shown no affects of the bad high ankle sprain he suffered last December.

The nod for the bounciest wing in camp, and perhaps the most bounciest player at the event, goes to Kaden Cooper, a 6-foot-5 2023 from the Skill Factory (Atlanta, Ga.).

Another California power is now back in the latest FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com, after dropping out the previous week. As June's NCAA scholastic live period nears, the ongoing high school season has reached a point where it is now clashing with summer ball. How will it affect the rankings?

The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section open division has its championship game set up after three rounds of competitive pool play contests. When all the dust settled, the top two seeds advanced to Friday's title contest.

As expected, top seed Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.), the No. 10 team in the FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com and still unbeaten, won pool "A" with an unbeaten 3-0 record. The Trailblazers advanced with a 82-76 victory over previous No. 47 Etiwanda (Etiwanda, Calif.) in a pool play game in which Sierra Canyon trailed by a point with just over a minute remaining. That's when UCLA junior commit Amari Bailey went to work, scoring on a conventional 3-point play and another contested basket to seal the win for the two-time defending CIFSS open champions. Bailey finished with 25 points, while junior forward Shy Odom also had a big game with 23 points.

The third pool play game between Sierra Canyon and Etiwanda was a "straight up" contest with the winner advancing to the title game. In pool "B", it was a bit more complicated. In the end, No. 2 seed Centennial (Corona, Calif.) advanced to the title game and jumped back in this week's FAB 50 for Etiwanda at No. 46. Centennial didn't actually find out it had advanced until after its own 84-69 victory over traditional California power Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) in its final pool play game. Even though the Huskies won they still needed some help to advance to the title game. Had Harvard-Westlake (Harvard Westlake, Calif.) defeated Damien (La Verne, Calif.), the Wolverines would have been the team to face Sierra Canyon. Harvard-Westlake defeated Centennial in its first pool play game when sophomore guard Kylan Boswell was out of the lineup.

The Huskies just had too much speed and quickness on the perimeter for Mater Dei, as junior Donovan Dent had 33 points. When Damien defeated Harvard-Westlake, Centennial celebrated post-game in the locker room and hallways. Centennial will need to be hitting on all cylinders to take down a Sierra Canyon team that is an incredible 20-0 against all seven of the other teams that participated in the CIFSS open field when it faced one of those teams, including 2-0 vs. Centennial.

One thing is certain about Friday's section championship game: win or lose Centennial will be done for the 2020-21 season. Coach Josh Giles (who played for current Damien coach Mike LeDuc at Glendora High School in SoCal) confirmed to Ballislife that his team will not participate in the SoCal regional playoffs, which are scheduled to begin June 15 after the CIF Central, Southern, L.A. City, and San Diego Section playoffs conclude this weekend.

Centennial, as are at least 63 other California teams, are scheduled to compete in Section 7, a NCAA-sanctioned scholastic live period event held June 18-20 at State Farm Arena in Glendale, Ariz. The CIF SoCal regional championships will conclude June 19. Dent and Boswell are just two of the many talented underclassmen who haven't been evaluated live by college coaches in well over 15 months. It was just too important an opportunity for Giles to offer the student-athletes in his program.

There is no confirmation any other SoCal team is going to end their season at the section level and drop out of the regional playoffs, but this is where the intersection of high school basketball in the spring and summer travel ball clash. For a majority of schools in Southern California, the school year has ended and seniors have participated in graduation ceremonies. Some schools, such as talented 15-0 Modesto Christian (Modesto, Calif.) had to end its season the day of graduation. Tennessee-bound Jahmai Mashack of Etiwanda is already enrolled in college courses while still competing for the Eagles, which have this week off and are scheduled to compete in the regional playoffs next week.

If Sierra Canyon beats Centennial, it won't affect the rankings much. However, if Centennial hands Sierra Canyon its first loss of the season it will create an interesting scenario for the final two sets of FAB 50 rankings. Centennial will need to be ranked in front of Sierra Canyon for at least a week because of the head-to-head win. But will it have done enough to hop No. 37 Torrey Pines (San Diego, Calif.)?

On Wednesday, the Falcons upped their record to 28-0 with a dominant 84-59 victory over St. Augustine (San Diego, Calif.) in the San Diego Section open semifinals. Torrey Pines, of course, owns a win over Centennial. If Sierra Canyon and Torrey Pines meet in the open regional playoffs and Sierra Canyon were to win, it probably would have done enough to hop back in front of Centennial considering the Falcons beat Centennial. In that scenario, however, we'd have to evaluate how the actual results play out before making a final rankings decision.

Torrey Pines (which faces 17-2 Cathedral Catholic of San Diego on Saturday for the section open crown) is not scheduled to play in the first session of Section 7, but is scheduled to the following weekend (June 25-27) after the CIF high school basketball season will be over.

After the next two weeks, we'll have to make a determination if team(s) in Oregon (OSAA) are good enough to crack the FAB 50. Washington (WIAA) ends its season June 11. If we determine Oregon teams are not, the final FAB 50 rankings will be released the week of June 21. The final West Region Top 20 won't be released to every game in Oregon is completed.

Results in California and New York create movement in latest FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com. Results cause the next team up in The Big Apple to move in and the second best team in Minnesota. For the second consecutive season, the CIF will not host state championships in California.

What happens off the court sometimes affects the FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com. Off-the-court news may not be as important as the actual results of games, but it can still affect what happens down the line and the strategy in setting up the final rankings.

That was the case last week when the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) announced the re-instatement of regional championships in Southern California only. The state is broken into 10 sections with their own individual playoffs. The teams then are selected for the regional playoffs. This year, with only two of the six Northern California sections offering playoffs, NorCal will not have regional championships.

For the second consecutive year, there won't be any CIF state championships. The section playoff around California will conclude on June 12 and the CIF regional championships will be complete by June 19.

Last season, Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.), currently No. 10 in the FAB 50 and now up to 5-0 on its season, won the SoCal open division title, but the very next day the sports world shut down and the CIF state championships were never played. The NorCal open title game was never played because of a COVID-19-related delay in the regional bracket.

Sierra Canyon is the last team to win the CIF state title in 2018-19 and will go into 2021-22 as the defending CIF state champs.

The announcement that the CIF will not host NorCal regionals definitely affects the FAB 50 for teams from that region. Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, Calif.), which made last year's NorCal open title game and is the only program from the region to win the CIF open crown (in 2015), plays in a section (CIF North Coast) that won't have a post-season. That affects its chances to play quality post-season competition and potentially play a ranked SoCal power in the CIF open title game.

It doesn't just hurt O'Dowd, it hurts any elite Northern California team and that pool of teams in smaller than its Southern California counterparts. COVID-19 is also affecting the region and potentially the ranking of its teams.

Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.), from the CIF Central Coast Section, had a game scheduled with Dublin (Calif.) last week that was cancelled because of COVID-19 protocols. So Mitty and O'Dowd quickly scheduled a game last week and it just happened to be a matchup of the two highest-ranked teams in Northern California at the time. With no regional playoffs, it was a big game (even though still relatively early in the season). Then No. 42 O'Dowd lost 58-54 and dropped out of the rankings.

Mitty, which was on the FAB bubble last week, got a big performance from Zach Granberry (a UC Santa Cruz commit) with 19 points to pull out a sloppily played game. The Monarchs would have moved into the FBA 50 this week had not lost later in the week, 51-49, to talented Capital Christian (Sacramento, Calif.), which came into the season as the No. 1 team from the massive CIF Sac Joaquin Section.

The next team in line for the rankings from NorCal, Riordan (San Francisco, Calif.), Mitty's West Catholic Athletic League (WCAL) rival, also lost. Without regional playoffs (and in the case of O'Dowd no sectionals), it will be much harder for those teams to rebound later and have a chance to jump in the FAB 50. The potential teams that usually await in the post-season simply won't be there this season.

Mitty's stumble created an opportunity for Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Class 4A state champ Wayzata (Plymouth, Minn.). The Trojans, which won their first state title since 1959, break into the rankings at No. 50. Wayzata split games with state power Hopkins (Minnetonka, Minn.) with its only other loss coming against FAB 50 No. 7 Minnehaha Academy (Minneapolis, Minn.) by seven points (70-63).

In the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Spring Tournament, previous No. 26 St. Raymond (Bronx, N.Y.) dropped its first game and dropped out of the FAB 50. The new team checking in at No. 45 is Monsignor Scanlan (Bronx, N.Y.). The Crusaders are trying to prove they are the best team in the CHSAA and are currently tied for first place in the Kevin Pigott Division of the tournament with FAB 50 bubble club and host Archbishop Stepinac (White Plains, N.Y.).

Scanlan and Stepinac are scheduled to lock horns on May 6.

Chet Holmgren, the preseason top vote-getter in the Mr. Basketball USA Tracker powered by www.ebooksnet.com, leads the voting in the updated balloting for national player of the year. The fortunes of some of the other top preseason candidates, however, has drastically changed.

RELATED: All-Time Mr. Basketball USA Winners | Preseason 2020-21 Mr. Basketball USA Tracker |How To Make A HS Version Of March Madness

There was always plenty of uncertainty surrounding the 2020-21 high school basketball season way before any sanctioned games were played. Would health departments give guidance and clearance to state associations? Would school districts follow suit with sanctioned games after their state associations created guidelines?

Fortunately for a vast majority of states around the country, high school basketball and winter sports are being played. As of February 18, only seven states have yet to play sanctioned games, with the Baltimore Catholic League set to tip-off this week. Not every state will have a full slate of regular season games and some states, such as Illinois and Indiana, have canceled their post-season.

Chet Holmgren, the nations' best center and unsigned prospect in the 2021 class, leads the way as the top national player of the year candidate in the latest Mr. Basketball USA Tracker powered by www.ebooksnet.com. The 7-foot-1 center from FAB 50 No. 9 Minnehaha Academy (Minneapolis, Minn.) was the top vote-getter (10 points) on seven ballots and No. 2 on the other three for 97 points out of a possible 100.

"Holmgren is easily the top player in any class over the past two years," said panelist Frank Burlison of burlisononbasketball.com. "Along with Zion Williamson, he's one of the two most compelling prospects I’ve seen over the past 10 years or so."

One only needs to look at the plight of the other top candidates after Holmgren in the updated Mr. Basketball USA Tracker voting results to realize how much the response to COVID-19 has affected the high school basketball landscape.

The two other candidates who appeared on all 10 ballots in the preseason voting, undecided forward Patrick Baldwin Jr. of Hamilton (Sussex, Wis.) and undecided guard Jaden Hardy of Coronado (Las Vegas, Nev.), are no longer on the ballots. Baldwin, the national class player of the year the past two seasons, was No. 2 behind Holmgren in the preseason but a severe ankle injury has sidelined him since early December. Hardy, who was No. 5 in the balloting, was able to play in some fall league contests, but the Clark County Unified School District that Coronado belongs to cancelled the winter high school basketball season on December 1.

The player who was No. 3 in the preseason voting behind Baldwin, Duke-bound power forward Paolo Banchero of O'Dea (Seattle, Wash.), has also seen his fortunes changed. He is now No. 4 in the balloting with 59 overall points while appearing on seven ballots. Banchero's positioning is based on the premise O'Dea, currently No. 12 in the FAB 50, will play its season in the spring. WIAA programs are supposed to conduct two, 10-week seasons beginning April 26. Banchero is without question one of the nation's most dominant talents, but the fragmented season means he won't get to play out-of-region competition or have any matchups against any of the other 18 Mr. Basketball USA candidates.

It was also announced today the 2021 McDonald's All-American Game is canceled. All the above mentioned players are shoo-ins for the game and it's practices are usually a good barometer to gauge many of the Mr. Basketball USA candidates in one setting. That is another opportunity taken away from the 16 senior candidates. McDonald's will still announce its rosters for the game and celebrate the honorees virtually.

The top candidate who has participated in what one would consider a "normal" season is Auburn-bound Jabari Smith of FAB 50 No. 35 Sandy Creek (Tyrone, Ga.) and his production is reflected in voting tally. Sandy Creek's season began on November 21 and the team is 21-4 against a tough schedule. Smith, a versatile forward who impacts both ends of the floor, is No. 2 in the balloting with 73 overall points whole posting season norms of 23.4 ppg, 9.9 rpg, 3.2 apg, 1.7 spg, and 2.8 bpg. Although he didn't garner a No. 1 vote, Smith did garner two No. 2 votes (nine points each) and joins Holmgren as the only two candidates to appear on all ten ballots.

Besides Holmgren (7) and Banchero (2), the only other candidate to receive a first place vote is junior center Jalen Duren of FAB 50 No. 1 Montverde Academy. Duren, a physical presence underneath who defends the glass well for the nation's top-ranked team, appeared on nine ballots with 63 points, good for third place overall. On the season, he’s the leading scorer (14.9 ppg, 63.6% FG) for a Eagles team with three players averaging over 13 points per game, while adding 9.4 rpg and 2.2 bpg.

Duren has supplanted Emoni Bates of YSPI Prep Academy (Ypsilanti, Mich.) as the top vote-getter among underclassmen and is a legitimate national POY candidate should he close the season strong. Bates, No. 4 overall in the preseason balloting, is now No. 6 after garnering 32 overall points, including one second place vote and one third. He appeared on eight ballots in the preseason (including four second-place votes), but appeared on five ballots is the updated tracker. YSPI Prep, a start-up, independent prep program, has had some trouble building its schedule thus far because of COVID-19 and sanctioning regulations and is 7-2 on the season with Bates averaging 23.0 ppg, 5.8 rpg and 3.0 apg.

Bates was one of the hottest rising names in basketball at all levels last season, but that has slowed somewhat in 2020-21.

The fast-risers in the latest Mr. Basketball USA Tracker are a pair of point guards who didn't garner any preseason attention. Kennedy Chandler, the catalyst for FAB 50 No. 2 Sunrise Christian Academy (Bel Air, Kan.), came in at No. 5 in the balloting while appearing on seven ballots. The Tennessee-bound Chandler has hit big shots throughout the season for a 18-2 club and is currently averaging 15.2 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 6.6 apg and 3.5 spg.

The second point guard to garner serious national POY consideration is TyTy Washington of AZ Compass Prep (Chandler, Ariz.). He too has been a catalyst for one of the best teams in the country (which owns a win over Sunrise Christian Academy). The Creighton-bound lead guard had 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists in the Sunrise Christian victory and is currently averaging 21.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 5.9 apg, and 2.6 spg.

Episode 62 is features a great debate that few hoop heads will ever agree upon: Which high school basketball team is the greatest of all time?

This ITP Show idea was sparked from a piece co-host Ronnie Flores wrote earlier in the week outlining four teams that are in the mix for that prestigious, yet unclaimed crown. Click the link below to listen to the full podcast and continue reading for a brief overview on why these are the four high school teams up for the debate.

There are two recent teams in consideration: 2015-16 Chino Hills, which went 35-0 while playing a loaded national schedule. What stands out most about that Huskies' team is that they accomplished those feats as a public school playing with mainly neighborhood players. Chino Hills were paced that season by current New Orleans Pelicans point guard Lonzo Ball and his brothers, LaMelo and LiAngelo. Seven Chino Hills players went on to play Division 1 college basketball and four are primed to play in the NBA.

The 2019-20 Montverde Academy is the most recent team with a legitimate claim to be the best high school team ever. The Eagles went 25-0, winning their games by a staggering average margin of 38.9 points. MVA had its season cut short due to the Coronavirus pandemic and weren't able to challenge for its fifth GEICO title. It's still to be determined how many Montverde players will make it to the NBA, but coach Kevin Boyle estimates that 12 players from this year's roster will earn Division 1 scholarships.

The other two teams come from earlier in high school hoops history, starting with the famed 82-83 Dunbar team out of Baltimore. The Poets went 31-0 that season and sent 11 of their 13 rostered players to the Division 1 level. NBA players from that squad consisted of Reggie Lewis, Reggie Williams and Tyrone "Mugsy" Bogues. Dunbar played a national schedule in a time period where it was rare for programs to make multiple out-of-state trips to play the upper-echelon competition.

Finally, the 1992-93 Oak Hill Academy team rounds' out the debate. Long-time NBA players Jerry Stackhouse and Jeff McInnis highlighted that 36-0 team which beat six college programs, in addition to 30 high school teams, in its 36-0 campaign. Nine players off of that Warriors team went on to play Division 1 hoops with four making it to the NBA.

Note:?The FAB 50 powered by www.ebooksnet.com is a continuation of the National Sports News Service ratings that began in 1952. These were the first national high school rankings and the late Art Johlfs of Minnesota compiled them. They were compiled for many years by the late Barry Sollenberger of Phoenix, who merged them into the FAB 50 19 years ago.

Jalen Suggs has established himself as one of the top high school basketball players in the Class of 2020 nationally. What many don't know is he's also an elite football player.
Having grown up in an athletic family in the Minneapolis area, Jalen is a star quarterback who as a sophomore has already received high major Division 1 offers to play college football.
His early basketball offers include Minnesota, Wake Forest, UCLA, Arizona State, Iowa, Iowa State, Marquette, Memphis, UNLV, Baylor and more!
Suggs is perhaps the best 2-way high school basketball player we've seen this season!
The ultra-athletic guard, Suggs finished with 14 points in limited minutes in the 85-62 blowout vs Highland Park. Everyone on the team got in on the action!
Terry Lockett led Minnehaha with 20 points. Big JaVonni Bickham added 12.
8th grade phenom Prince Aligbe scored 7 points off the bench including an emphatic dunk.
Lorenzo Smith scored 9 and Kaden Johnson scored 8 for Minnehaha.
St Paul Highland Park never got on track shooting-wise. Perhaps that was due to Minnehaha's stifling defense?
#2 Evan Brodtman, #24 Mustafa Aden, and #32 Abdalla Mohamed each scored 15 points for the Scots.
Check out these raw highlights from Minnehaha Academy's game versus St Paul Highland Park High School!
And check out the postgame interview with Jalen Suggs about balancing his football and basketball.

Jalen Carey is from Harlem NY but the 6'3 Syracuse-bound scoring guard isn't afriad to say "New Jersey Basketball is the best!"

Simeon Career Academy is the best known high school basketball program in Chicago. It's famous for producing NBA players like Derrick Rose and Jabari Parker and for winning a ton of titles.
Because Simeon is so loaded with talent, many of the city's top players are sitting on Simeon's bench, waiting their turn.
A month into this high school season, Simeon is looking like the top team in Illinois and their senior star Talen Horton-Tucker (Iowa State) is looking like the state's top player!
#1 Simeon (11-2) faced #2 Chicago Curie (10-2) in the championship of the 87th annual Pontiac Holiday Tournament. Both teams were undefeated against in-state teams.
Curie is big, physical, quick, talented and deep and still they were no match for Simeon on this day.
For Talen Horton-Tucker, the time is NOW! He played 2 seasons on the JV/Sophomore team but now the varsity team is his.
Tucker led Simeon with 25 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists in their 67-48 win. He showed confidence at both ends. He blocked shots and also made the best passes of the day!
After the game Coach Rob Smith said: "I don’t know if there is another player in the state that can do all the things he can on the floor.”
Simeon junior Kejuan Clements and Bakari Simmons (son of former NBA vet Bobby Simmons) each scored 10 points and transfer Zion Young added eight.
Curie Condors were led by junior transfer Marquise Walker (20 points). He was the only Condor is double figures.
Thanks to Jim Drengwitz and everyone at Illinois' premier high school basketball holiday tournament, the 2017 Pontiac Holiday Tournament!

Jordan McCabe entered the most-anticipated game of the annual Rick Majerus WBY Shootout as the crowd favorite. The dynamic senior point guard is known for his flashy passing and ball-handling skills.
Fresh of a productive trip to City of Palms in Ft Myers Florida, Kaukauna faced undefeated Waunakee who are led by Belmont-bound Mitch Listau.
Waunakee put multiple defenders on Mccabe for the entire game. They ran the Diamond and One and stuck with it.
Waunakee broke out to an early lead. But in the second half, the Ghosts scored 60 points on their way to a 101-66 win.
101 is the most points ever scored in the event. West Virginia commit Jordan Mccabe finished with just 9 (or 10) points but added 16 assists setting a new WBY record.
Eric Carl added 22 points for Kaukana. Dylan Kurey was a force for Kaukana finishing with 18 points, 20 rebounds!
Mitch Listau finished with 21 points and Will Knatz scored 16 for Waunakee.
Thanks to Mark Miller and everyone at Wisconsin's premier annual high school basketball event, the 2017 Rick Majerus WBY Shootout at Concordia (near Milwaukee)!
