In Chicago, basketball is big 12 months a year. Many of Chicago's top grammar school teams (K-8th grade) end up playing over 50 games per school season when it's all said and done.
These games are intense and legends are often born at games like this. For the last few decades, Chicago's top grammar school team has been Beasley Academic Center on the city's South Side.
They've won many city titles (including 2015 and 2016) and its famous alums include Derrick Rose. 2 years ago Beasley went undefeated for the season.
This is a new season and many teams are coming at Beasley. We're just getting to know this year's 7-8th grade Beasley team but point guard Kenton 'KD' Wright appears to be one of Chicago's top 8th graders and he's joined by Jaylen Houston from the West Side.
Beasley faced a formidable opponent in Kenwood, led by PG Mason Jones and big Avery Davis at this year's Best of the Midwest tournament at Collins HS. Top teams from Chicago and across Illinois battled all weekend and this was the best game we caught.
We just wanted to give Ballislife viewers a raw look at how intense even early-season 7-8th grade games can be as well as your first look at young KD Wright a budding star in Chicago.

Big East-bound Billy Garrett, Jr. capped off a stellar high school career by leading his Morgan Park Mustangs to win the 2013 Class 3A Illinois state basketball championship. It was Morgan Park’s first title since 1976.
Fans of Chicago Public League basketball appreciate Garrett's refreshing old school game, while LEADING his otherwise frenetic (and talented) team in every sense of the word. He might not be as flashy as some of the other players featured on Ballislife, but 6’4 Garrett can play. He can shoot, score, pass, and defend. He finished his high school career as Morgan Park’s career scoring leader and assists leader.
Many hoops fans don’t know that Garrett plays with a rare health condition known as sickle cell trait. In 2012, Sports Illustrated wrote about Garrett’s experience dealing with his health as well as the interesting story of his grandfather Bill Garrett who has been credited with breaking the Big Ten’s color barrier when he played for Indiana in the 1940s.
Billy Garrett, Jr. will stay in Chicago to play college ball at DePaul (Chicago, IL) where his dad is an assistant coach.

After a strong summer on the AAU circuit with the Illinois Wolves, 6’8 junior Keita Bates-Diop established himself as a national-level, top-20 recruit (#18 ESPN, #20 Rivals).
This season, Bates-Diop led his U-High (Normal, IL) team by averaging 18.5 points and 6.4 rebounds a game.
Here are some highlights from U-High’s 2 games in the Chicago area versus eventual Illinois 3A State champs Chicago Morgan Park and eventual Ohio State runners-up St. Vincent St. Mary.
Even in this limited sample size, Bates-Diop shows his athleticism and lethal perimeter jumper for his 6’8 size (7’2 wingspan).
