This upcoming NBA All-Star weekend is a "pinch me moment" for New York Liberty star, Sabrina Ionescu. How many people can say they are competing during a first ever shootout against your idol? It's a dream come true for not only Sabrina, but WNBA and NBA fans as well.

RELATED ARTICLE

Growing up in the 90's, I had dreams of playing one on one with Michael Jordan, and I couldn't imagine meeting him, let alone competing against him.

For quite some time, Ionescu has been a dedicated admirer of NBA star Steph Curry. Since she was 10 years old, he even graced the screen background of her phone. Like many young sports enthusiasts, Ionescu adorned her bedroom with Curry memorabilia, including posters and pictures.

This weekend, the two superstars will face off in the "Stephen vs. Sabrina" 3-point challenge. As a four-time NBA Champion, the Warriors star has been an inspiration to Ionescu in numerous ways. Likewise, the Liberty guard has made a significant impact on Curry, and their friendship spans many years.

"I was about 10, and watched him from up in the stands," Ionescu told the media on a video conference call. "I just knew how much he inspired me from a really young age, and who I wanted to model my game after, as a basketball player, but as a person."

With a connection to the late Kobe Bryant, Ionescu shares similarities in her game with Curry. Renowned as two of the finest three-point shooters in basketball, both are notorious for their ability to sink shots from well beyond the three-point line.

Raised in California, Ionescu hails from Walnut Creek, near the Bay Area, and attended Miramonte High School in Orinda, California. Coincidentally, her proximity allowed her to attend games during her upbringing. Curry, 35, is in his 15th NBA season, all with the Warriors.

Sabrina Ionescu grew up idolizing Steph Curry

In a video call with the media, Ionescu expressed, "I couldn't have asked for a better idol and mentor, and someone I can look up to and want to emulate my game after and who I am as a person." She emphasized that Curry's authenticity, as seen in public, has been crucial in her endeavor to remain genuine and true to herself."

For Curry, he recognizes how significant she is to the game of basketball and acknowledges her dedication to her craft.

"There's a wave around her every time she steps foot on the floor," said Curry. "You see somebody that has that look, that determination, and that reverence for the game. How you handle yourself and how you carry yourself with that spotlight, it's not easy."

He describes the former Oregon Duck as a "true ambassador for the game, somebody that you would want your daughters, your sons to looks up to."

When did Steph and Sabrina develop their connection?

Apart from Sabrina growing up in the backyard of Curry's success, there's interest in exploring the roots of their connection. Like Curry, she's motivated, and of course, the two share the Bay-Area connection. Curry made it known Sabrina "was a true Warriors die-hard fan from the jump," which makes the relationship even more special.

Leading up to the NBA All-Star weekend, Curry highlighted that their connection dates back to Ionescu's college days at Oregon. He mentioned taking his children to her games, where Sabrina made them feel valued and cherished.

In fact, while the two haven't officially competed on the court just yet, it sounds like they've gone up against each other quite a few times back at home.

"Well, Steph remembers the last time that we played up in San Francisco, "Sabrina chuckled during her interaction with the media. "So, I don't know if he wants to talk about it. Curry was quick to point out "Thats why I called her the champ."

Perhaps Sabrina left Curry stumbling on the floor with some ankle breaking moves. Though we may never have the full details, it's heartening to witness their connection evolve over the years.

"We've had fun," said Sabrina Ionescu. "I mean, we've competed a couple of times, obviously never on this stage. I feel like we've always been competing and being able to keep up with one another from afar. " Since the WNBA and NBA seasons don't overlap, Sabrina mentioned that they shoot "a lot" and "love to play" whenever they have the opportunity to spend time together in the gym.

After all, it's the NBA's all-time leader in three-pointers made versus the three-point queen. Can you imagine just how many threes are sunk during their meetups?

How it all went down

The 3-point contest is something that's been in the works, especially after Ionescu hit 20 straight shots for a record 37 points in the WNBA 3-point contest. Initially, it started off as a joke between the two.

"We talked about it the day that it happened," said Sabrina. " We got on the phone and just of were just laughing. Sabrina emphasized the significance of this event, highlighting its uniqueness as a one-of-a-kind moment between the two of them. Given that Ionescu is in the off-season, she and Curry are finally able to be in the same place at the same time.

"We're able to highlight the W [WNBA)," said Ionescu. "Knowing that we're able to have our own contest, it's not like I'm joining the NBA three-point contest. But we're really having our own and the significance and importance of that--Kind of just having that idea stemmed as a joke, and now being able to see it come to life. It's going to be a great experience for us both and exciting to see obviously who the winner is, but what it's going to mean for basketball as a whole."

Steph Curry said he "couldn't back down" after he was challenged by Ionescu on social media and that he "absolutely loves it."

What this means for women's basketball

Steph Curry has always been an advocate for women's basketball, and this yet another way to showcase Sabrina Ionescu and women's hoops on a larger stage. While it's a friendly matchup, Ionescu shared with us the importance of the event, and what she hopes it will accomplish.

"There's an opportunity to raise awareness of and there's obviously many, many people in our society that still don't give the respect to women's sports and to women in general. Knowing this is an opportunity is sometimes all you need to be able to go out there and shut a lot of people up. Steph really believes in me to be able to go out there but is understanding what it is that we're accomplishing. Speaks volumes to him as an individual."

For Curry, it's about redefining competition and continuously pushing the boundaries. It's about seizing opportunities and fully investing in the moment. While they emphasize that none of this is scripted, the event provides an opportunity for young girls and boys to witness women's basketball on a much larger platform.

"You look for opportunities to continue to raise the bar on what it means to be a basketball fan, said Curry. "Watching what she [Sabrina] did on All-Stat weekend, watching what the WNBA season was like, how it's continuing to grow. It's an authentic competition between two great shooters, who have had success in a three-point contest."

This Saturday, basketball fans worldwide are poised to witness two of the greatest three-point shooters in the history of the game.

On Wednesday morning, the NBA announced the 2024 Ruffles All-Star Celebrity player rosters and coaches. Hang onto your seat, because this year's contest is filled with a diverse group of individuals, ranging from current athletes to professionals in other fields such as chefs, musicians, and film industry figures.

The Ruffles celebrity game is just one of the many events that will take place during the eventful weekend. Also, it's not the first All-Star weekend that will feature a collaboration with the WNBA. It takes me back to the 2 Ball Competition, where members of the NBA and WNBA were paired in a shooting competition during All-Star weekend in 1998, 2000, 2001. As the WNBA continues its growth, this opportunity only expands the discoverability and expansion of women's sports.

The head coaches include First Take co-hosts Stephen A. Smith and Shannon Sharpe. Sharpe, who joined ESPN last fall, will mesh well with Smith. Notorious for fun arguments on air, the two analysts will bring both knowledge of the game and comedic relief. Sharpe is also a Pro Football Hall of Famer, who played 14 seasons as a tight end in the NBA. The Duo will be amusing, and certainly captivating to watch.

WNBA x NBA

Furthermore, NFL Hall of Famer Peyton Manning will join forces with Grammy Award recording artist Curtis Jackson (50 Cent), as featured coaches on team Shannon. On the opposing side, 2x WNBA Champion and 2x WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson will serve as a coach for team Stephen A. In addition, 5x Grammy award winning recording artist Lil Wayne will also serve as a coach for Stephen A. It will be fun to especially watch Wilson collaborate with Stephen A.

Aside from the Steph Curry and Sabrina Ionescu three-point showdown, the celebrity game will feature two WNBA players, who will be on opposing teams.

2x WNBA Champion and 5x WNBA All-Star Jewell Loyd will join 'Team Shannon.' Newly signed Phoenix Mercury guard and WNBA Champion Natasha Cloud, will join 'Team Stephen A.' Both Loyd and Cloud are ballers and will be fun to watch head-to-head at the guard position.

This year, the court will look different from years past. Appealing to fans and spectators, the hard wood will be LED themed, featuring several animations. Once again, the 4-point line will return, along with several in game challenges.

Team Shannon

  • Micah Parsons (2x First-Team All-Pro linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys)
  • Quincy Isaiah (Former football player and actor: Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty)
  • Conor Daly (IndyCar Series Racer)
  • Jewell Loyd (2x WNBA Champion, guard for the Seattle Storm)
  • Kai Cenat (Online streamer and YouTuber)
  • Dylan Wang (Actor)
  • Lilly Singh (Emmy Award-winning entertainer)
  • SiR (Singer and song writer, Grammy Award-nominated recording artist)
  • Walker Hayes (Country singer and song writer, Grammy Award-nominated recording artist)
  • Anuel AA (Latin American Music Award-winning recording artist)
  • Coaches: Shannon Sharpe, Peyton Manning, 50 Cent

Team Stephen A

  • Jennifer Hudson (Grammy Award winning singer, actress, producer, and talk show host, youngest female EGOT winner)
  • Tristan Jass (Basketball entertainer, social media star, content creator)
  • Jack Ryan (Basketball entertainer)
  • Metta World Peace (Former NBA Champion and 2004 Defensive Player of the Year)
  • AJ McLean (Founding member of the Backstreet Boys, singer, Grammy Award-nominated recording artist)

  • Natasha Cloud (WNBA Champion, guard for the Phoenix Mercury)
  • Adam Blackstone (Grammy Award-nominated musician)
  • CJ Stroud (Pro Bowl Quarterback for the Houston Texans)
  • Gianmarco Tamberi (Olympic High Jump Champion)
  • Coaches: Stephan A. Smith, A'ja Wilson, Lil Wayne

In addition to the epic rosters and coaches, the broadcast team will feature several talented and well-known analysts. The broadcast lineup includes:

  • Host for the game and M.V.P trophy presentation, and player/coach interviews: Cassidy Hubbarth of ESPN
  • Play-by-play commentary: Ryan Rucco, Richard Jefferson, and Monica McNutt.
  • Special guest: Pat McAfee

The special event will take place on Friday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. ET, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. It will air on ESPN and the ESPN App.

SAN FRANCISCO--NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced Monday evening the Golden State Warriors will host the 74th NBA All-Star game in 2025. It will be the first time the Bay Area will host an all-star weekend since 2000. Overall, it's the third time they will be hosting the event in franchise history.

The Bay Area first hosted the All-Star game in 1967, where the two teams played at Cow Palace. Hometown hero Rick Barry, won the MVP award, in which the Western Conference defeated the Eastern Conference, 135 to 120. The 2000 All-Star weekend was located at Oakland Arena, which included Vince Carter, Kevin Garnett, Allen Iverson, Grant Hill, and Alonzo Mourning, among others. The Vince Carter dunk contest is one of the most iconic and notable in NBA history.

Warriors owner Joe Lacob expressed the importance of Steph Curry playing in front of home fans for the first time in his All-Star career. That's if, he's still with Golden State and selected as an All-Star. Last year, Curry put up 50 points, which is third most points in an All-Star game, behind Jayson Tatum with 55. Commissioner Adam Silver stated all cards are on the table when it comes to the various concepts surrounding All-Star weekend in the San Fransisco.

"People are out there talking about concepts about a Ryder Cup type format, maybe thinking about US players playing against global players," said Silver. "I just know we are looking at all different approaches to All-Star, and this is a great market to try new things. When you think of innovation, you think of the Bay Area, San Fransisco, and the Oakland Area."

The Chase Center is an elite venue

It's been four years since the Golden State Warriors relocated from Oakland to San Fransisco. With the move came a beautiful newly constructed arena, known as the Chase Center. A state of the art arena, the Center holds up to nearly 200 sports and entertainment events per year. In the Mission Bay neighbourhood of San Francisco, the Warriors home arena is a one of a kind innovative and culinary experience for guests.

It's the second major announcement for the Bay Area this year. Less than two months ago, the Golden State Warriors announced they would be granted an WNBA Expansion team. Mayor London Breed was visibly seen ecstatic about the news on Monday. Present were Warriors owners Peter Guber, Joe Lacob, and Brandon Schneider, Warriors President and Chief Operating Officer.

"It means a lot of money and a lot of visitors," said Mayor London Breed. "We anticipate 135,000 people will be coming here to the Bay Area, to participate in some capacity over the three day period. We anticipate over 350 million poured into our economy-- in the local businesses, the job opportunities, and all the other activities surrounding All-Star weekend. Mayor Breed did state after the WNBA expansion that the Bay Area wasn't always built up, and has been a work in progress.

There will be several All-Star weekend festivities

"To our fans here in the Bay Area, for the All-Star festivities in 2025, this will be the epicenter of basketball around the world," said Commissioner Adam Silver.

That weekend, the all-star events will begin on Feb. 14, which will feature the rookies. Several events will take place on Feb. 15, including the AT&T Slam Dunk contest. The contests will end on Feb. 16, which will include the NBA All-Star game. The NBA announced in a press release there will be various events for "all ages."

Warriors owner Peter Gruber state it was a "dream" for this to happen 14 years ago, and their past visions have become a reality.

"We always visioned building a new venue-- we did it, a world class venue, " Gruber stated. "Then we always visioned having a great team--we did it. We always visioned having a great fanbase-- we did it and we've been successful. We also promised ourselves we'd bring the All-Star game back to San Fransisco, and we would bring it with style, and great grace-- and have a fantastic experience for our fans and the global fans.

This announcement came after the NBA stated they will switch back to its original Eastern Conference against Western Conference format. The 2024 All-Star weekend will take place at from Feb. 15. through Feb. 18 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, located in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Breanna Stewart- Forward, New York Liberty- Captain.?

Breanna Stewart is easily one of the best basketball players in the world.? She shocked the league when she left Seattle for New York in free agency and is having a career season. So far, Stewart is averaging a career-high in points, rebounds, and assists.? In addition, the Liberty have the second-best record in the WNBA, and Breanna can do it all.? Stewart is a 2x WNBA Champion, 2x WNBA Finals MVP, MVP in 2018, and a 5x All-Star.? "Stewie " is in the prime of her career and is playing at an elite level.?

Brittney Griner- Center, Phoenix Mercury

PPG: 19.5?| FG:?60.6 % | 3 PT:?20 %?| FT: 77.4 % |?REB: 6.6 |?AST: 1.7 |?STL: 0.6 |?BLK: 1.9 | TO: 2.4

It's great to see Brittney Griner back, and she is having a fantastic season.? Standing at 6 foot 9, Griner gives Team Stewart the edge on height and size.? Griner is averaging nearly 20 points per game and is shooting a career-high 60.6 percent from the field this season.? Although Brittney Griner isn't much of a three-point shooter, she is a force inside.? The Mercury center recorded the first dunk of the WNBA season, and the 25th of her career just a few days ago. I admire her strength, and Griner will be a force in the paint, offensively, and on the glass.? I expect Griner to be a defensive presence tonight.

Jewell Loyd- Guard, Seattle Storm

PPG:? 25.7 | FG: 39.4?% | 3 PT:?40.5 %?| FT: 87.3 % |?REB: 4.5 |?AST: 3.2 |?STL: 0.9 |?BLK: 0.6 | TO: 3.1

Jewell Loyd is in her ninth season with the Seattle Storm and leads the WNBA in points scored (25.7).? With the retirement of Sue Bird, and the departure of Breanna Stewart, the #1 overall pick is certainly showcasing her talents.? Loyd is a five-time All-Star, however, was ruled out with a foot injury against the Atlanta Dream on Wednesday.? If Loyd is able to suit up, Team Stewart is getting a player who is averaging career highs in points, and 3-point percentage.? Although the Storm are 4-16, Loyd is playing at a high level, surrounded by a ton of youth.? Although Loyd's field goal percentage is down, she gets to the free-throw line, and can hit her threes.

Satou Sabally- Forward, Dallas Wings

PPG:? 17.5 | FG: 42.3 % | 3 PT:?34 %?| FT: 87.8 % |?REB: 9.2 |?AST: 3.5 |?STL: 1.6 |?BLK: 0.3 | TO: 2.9

Satou Sabally, is in her third season in the WNBA, all with the Dallas Wings.? The Dallas forward stands at 6 foot 4 and adds to an already loaded frontcourt on Team Stewart.? Sabally is a 2x All-Star, and is averaging career highs in points, rebounds, assists, steals, minutes played, field goal and three-point percentage. In addition, Sabally is averaging 5 more rebounds than last season, and is shooting over 10 percent better from the three.? She has grown stronger to overcome injuries and has nearly averaged a double -double on a nightly basis.? Satou Sabally is extremely athletic for her size, is a fantastic rebounder, can score inside, rejects screens and attacks inside.

Nneka Ogwumike- Forward, Los Angeles Sparks

PPG: 19.8?| FG: 53.2 % | 3 PT:?32.4 %?| FT: 90.1 % |?REB: 9.6 |?AST: 2.8 |?STL: 1.6 |?BLK: 0.7 | TO: 2.4

Nneka Ogwumike is in her 12th WNBA season, all with the Los Angeles Sparks.? An WNBA Champion, 2016 MVP, and 8x All-Star, Ogwumike brings veteran leadership and size to the loaded frontcourt. Furthermore, Ogwumike is averaging career highs in points, rebounds, and free-throw percentage.? In fact, Nneka may be having her best WNBA season at 33 years old.??

Key Players

Sabrina Ionescu- Guard, New York Liberty

PPG: 16.4 | FG: 39.7?% | 3 PT:?44.6 %?| FT: 88.5 % |?REB: 5.8 |?AST: 5.1 |?STL: 0.9 |?BLK: 0.3 | TO: 2.5

It's hard not to talk about Sabrina Ionescu after the performance she had last night.? Ionescu made NBA and WNBA history with 37 points in last night's three-point contest. In her fourth season with the New York Liberty, Ionescu is averaging career highs in three-point percentage.? Ionescu is on a very talented Liberty team, including Breanna Stewart and Courtney Vandersloot.? Perhaps Sabrina may be overshadowed a bit by Stewart, however, she is an incredible player. In addition, she ranks 2nd in the league in 3-pointers made (3.4) per game.? If Jewell Loyd isn't healthy to play, look for Sabrina Ionescu to step up.

Napheesa Collier- Forward, Minnesota?Linx

PPG: 21.3?| FG: 48.4 % | 3 PT:?32.9 %?| FT: 86 % |?REB: 7.7 |?AST: 2.6 |?STL: 1.7 |?BLK: 1.1 | TO: 2.4

Napheesa Collier is in her fifth season with the Minnesota Linx and is having an incredible season.? Collier ranks fourth in the league in points per game (21.3), which is her career high.? The Linx forward adds size to this roster, will be teaming up with former UConn teammate, Breanna Stewart.? Collier is having an MVP caliber season and is a big presence on the defensive side of the court (1.7 steals, 1.1 blocks).

Kahleah Copper- Guard- Chicago Sky

PPG: 17.3?| FG: 44 % | 3 PT:?41.9 %?| FT: 68.3 % |?REB:4.8 |?AST: 1.9 |?STL: 0.6 |?BLK: 0.2 | TO: 2.6

Kahleah Copper is in her 7th season with the Chicago Sky, and Copper is averaging career highs in points.? If Jewel Loyd is out with an injury, both Copper and Ionescu will be extremely important in the backcourt.? Along with Sabrina Ionescu, Copper is shooting extremely efficient from the three-point (41.9 percent)?and is averaging 17 points a game.? I absolutely think Team Stewart will need Copper's three-point shooting capabilities in the backcourt.

Team Wilson

Captain: A'ja Wilson, Las Vegas Aces

Wilson stands at 6 foot 4 and is nearly averaging a double double this season.? The Aces forward is averaging career highs in blocks and field goal percentage.? Look for Wilson to stand out on both sides of the court.

As a fellow UConn fan, I really saw how special Aliyah Boston was throughout her college career, and in the Championship game against Connecticut.? Boston is in fact a rookie, and this will be her first WNBA All-Star appearance and start.? In 20 games, Aliyah Boston leads the WNBA in three-point percentage (66.7), which is incredible. ?Standing at 6 foot 5, Boston gives Team Wilson size, and is incredible on the boards, and the defensive side of the basketball. Tonight, will be exciting for the rookie, and look for Boston to make some headlines tonight, and space the floor. In addition, Boston is shooting over 60 percent from both the field and the three, something NO other player has done this season.

She also became the first player in Aces history to drop 40 points in a game, which came against the Minnesota Linx.? She can shoot the three, attack the basket, and is a great facilitator.

Overall Prediction:

The Las Vegas Aces are the reigning WNBA Champions, currently lead the WNBA in wins, and four players are on Team Wilson.? The combination of A'ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray, Kelsey Plum, and Jackie Young is just too lethal.? Team Wilson has the better of the backcourt, and on paper it seems this team will completely dominate, like last year.? Team Stewart has some incredible players, and a strong frontcourt in Griner, Stewart, Sabally, and Ogwumike.? Jewell Loyd is coming off an injury, in which her status hasn't changed.? I like the addition of Courtney Vandersloot, who leads the WNBA in assists, and I think Ionescu will have a dominant game.? Overall, it doesn't seem fair to me, and the two teams are mismatched in my opinion. Team Wilson has the better overall talent and players.? Give me Team Wilson -5.5, OVER 249.5, or Team Wilson Money Line.??
