RELATED: All-Time Mr. Basketball USA Winners | Final 2020-21 Mr. Basketball USA Tracker
As a young player on the Team Final travel ball club, Dereck Lively II of Westtown School (West Chester, Pa.) once backed up Jalen Duren. Duren was physically advanced and it was evident he was going to be an elite player. Not only did Lively begin on his travel ball club as a back-up, his development was further slowed by a broken foot during his freshman campaign. Just as any developing big man, it took some time for him to grow into his body and show signs of becoming one of the nation's most sought-after recruits.
So after backing up his good friend, it's ironic Lively is now replacing him as the top vote-getter for the nation's most prestigious individual honor: Mr. Basketball USA. After leading Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) to the 2020-21 FAB 50 national title and teaming up with Lively to lead Team Final to the 2021 Nike EYBL Peach Jam title, Duren decided to re-classify up and join Memphis for the 2021-22 season.
Duren's decision came after finishing last season as the No. 3 vote-getter in the final 2020-21 Mr. Basketball USA Tracker behind Jabari Smith (Auburn) and 2020-21 honoree Chet Holmgren (Gonzaga). Duren decided to team up with Emoni Bates, who finished tied for No. 7 in last year's final Mr. Basketball USA voting and briefly played for Team Final, at Memphis. It's a foregone conclusion without the nationwide Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) policy the NCAA approved on July 1, 2021, Duren and Bates would not be playing for Memphis right now The duo still might be in the high school ranks or pursuing professional opportunities.
NCAA NIL reform, along with emerging professional opportunities for elite high school players (G League Ignite, Overtime Elite, NBL Next Star program), has undoubtedly changed the high school and grassroots landscape. This change is reflected in the preseason voting for national player of the year. With Duren, Bates and a few other underclass elites gone from the high school game, Lively was the top vote-getter among the 10-man tracker panel that make up the Mr. Basketball USA Tracker powered by www.ebooksnet.com. Lively was the only player among 22 candidates to appear on all ten ballots.
Lively tallied seven first place votes and finished with 84 out of a possible 100 points to easily best second place vote-getter Amari Bailey of preseason FAB 50 No. 9 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) with 69 points. The explosive shooting guard headed to UCLA received five second place votes and three third place ones, but didn't appear on two ballots.
Lively's point total perhaps is a bit surprising only because he is the first leading preseason vote-getter in 15 years whom did not appear on a single ballot in the final tally from the previous season. Not only did Lively have to recover from his foot injury, the COVID-19 pandemic was another hurdle he had to overcome. When it broke out in winter of 2020, he was a nondescript prospect from a national perspective. College scouts were unable to see him live in the summer of 2020 and Westtown School only played three games during his junior season.
He was regarded as a Top 50 national prospect until last spring, when he began displaying his ability on a national scale as a big-time defensive game-changer and rim protector. Lively led the EYBL in blocked shots (3.7 big) and added 8.4 ppg and 6.7 rpg in 15 outings. He then led Peach Jam in blocked shots as Team Final captured the prestigious event title for the first time in program history.
He was also rated as our No. 2 performer at the 2021 Pangos All-American Camp behind, you guess it, his friend and teammate Duren. That was, of course, before Duren decided to take advantage of new NIL legislation and jump early to the college ranks. Of the 22 preseason vote-getters, only Bailey and No. 3 vote getter DJ Wagner of FAB 50 No. 4 Camden (N.J.) were significant candidates during the 2020-21 season and Bailey is the only returning Elite All-American still in high school basketball. Duren, Bates and Scoot Henderson of Kell (Marietta, Ga.), who signed a two-year with the NBA G League Ignite team, were high school All-Americans that left the high school ranks early.
"The biggest thing I see is this is the first year affected by high school players going to pro leagues and it's an anomaly year," said said panel member Van Coleman of Global Sports Television and Nothing But Net Magazine. "The top two prospects in high school basketball going into this year (Duren and Bates), didn't really challenge Chet Holmgren last year, but at that point it didn't seem like they knew what they were going to do in the off-season. NIL options for college, plus Overtime Elite and the NBA G League taking high school players with eligibility, all affects how this year's voting will go."
The race to challenge Lively for the only production-based national high school basketball national player of the year honor is wide open, especially with last year's top underclass candidates no longer part of the equation. Twelve candidates appeared on only one ballot, which indicates a host of prospects can challenge the top core group as the season rolls along based on their individual play and team success. This year should also see a return of the plethora of national level holiday tournaments and showcases where many of the top candidates will have the opportunity to play in head-to-head matchups. Last season those were limited in scope and some regions did not have official seasons at all.
Bailey was the only other candidate besides Lively to appear on eight ballots, with Wagner nabbing two first place votes despite his absence on three ballots. The third candidate to receive a first place vote was point guard Jaden Bradley of preseason FAB 50 No. 2 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.). He also had a No. 2 vote, and a No. 3, while finishing in sixth place with 33 overall points. His new IMG Academy teammate Keyonte George, had two second place, third place and fourth place votes apiece to finish at No. 4 in the balloting with one less overall point than Wagner (49 points), the only junior among the top 10 candidates.
"The jury is still out how these new pro leagues are going to affect the first couple of classes with these options," Coleman said. "Things may settle down after a couple of years, but it's still too early to tell if these changes are positive or negative for the best players."

About Mr. Basketball USA Tracker Panel
www.ebooksnet.com's panel of 10 experts, which includes six McDonald’s All-American selection committee members, casts its vote for the top national player of the year candidates. Each panelist lists his top seven candidates regardless of class. The votes are then tabulated on a 10-point scoring system with a first-place vote equaling 10 points, a second-place vote earning nine points and down to four points for a seventh-place vote. The number in parenthesis refers to the numbers of ballots on which a player appeared and previous rankings refers to position in last season's final tracker.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) concluded its season last Friday when Seattle Prep (Seattle, Wash.) battled O’Dea (Seattle, Wash.) for the Metro League crown.
Braeden Smith of Seattle Prep won the game in unbelievable fashion by intercepting an O'Dea inbounds pass underneath his own basket with two seconds left and converting an acrobatic lay-up at the buzzer to give the Panthers a dramatic 62-61 victory. Smith, a junior, finished with a game-high 24 points.
Even though it was mid-June, it was still dramatic and emotional as any championship game would be. There was no statewide playoffs, so it's not easy to determine if any WIAA team deserves to crack the FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com. We still have at least another week to make a determination and a few more to decide if teams from the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) can crack the nation's longest running weekly rankings. According to The Oregonian, Portland Interscholastic League assistant athletic director Jeff Peeler is organizing an end-of-season tournament scheduled for June 21-25.
As wild as Smith's game-winner was, it was hard to top what happened down in San Diego, Calif. the following night, when FAB 50 No. 37 Torrey Pines put its unbeaten record on the line vs. Cathedral Catholic for the California Interscholastic Federation CIF San Diego Section open title. It was a dog-fight that came down to the wire. Torrey Pines was able to keep its magical season alive when senior Nick Herrmann scored on a deep range, catch-and-shoot 3-pointer at the buzzer off an out-of-bounds play to give the Falcons a 63-60 victory.
Hermann, who finished with 30 points, battled cancer two years ago just at around the same time his mother did. The social media visuals of him embracing his mother after the game will probably be one of the defining moments of the 2020-21 season.
With the win, Torrey Pines moves to 29-0 and is the No. 1 seed in the SoCal open regional playoffs, which conclude on June 19. NorCal is not having a regional tournament as all but one section in the northern region did not conduct playoffs at the section level. The Falcons were able to nab the top seed because previous No. 46 Centennial (Corona, Calif.) toppled previous No. 10 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) in the CIF Southern Section open division title game on Friday night. With Centennial's 80-72 victory, Sierra Canyon's 21-game post-season winning streak was snapped.
All throughout the CIFSS open division playoffs, Sierra Canyon has been living on the edge and relying on the unique talents of UCLA-bound Amari Bailey to pull out victories. That was the case in two pool play wins, but in the championship game Centennial was just too disciplined and hit too many big shots to let that happen despite 34 points from Bailey. Sophomore Kylan Boswell was the difference maker finishing with 24 points, including six big 3-pointers, which at least two stopped Sierra Canyon mini-runs. Junior Donovan Dent added 19 points (three 3-pointers) while sophomore forward Devin Williams had a crucial block and a big dunk down the stretch, finishing with eight points, eight rebounds and six blocks. As a team, Centennial blocked 12 shots.
Centennial obviously is now in front of Sierra Canyon in the rankings, with the Huskies jumping up 17 spots in this weeks' FAB 50 to No. 29, while Sierra Canyon is down to No. 32. We couldn't drop the Trailblazers any further because of their overall success and because they still have a chance to win their fourth consecutive CIF SoCal open regional crown despite losing at the section level.
They are the No. 2 seed in the SoCal open regional because Centennial opted out in order to participate in Section 7, a NCAA-sanctioned scholastic live period event held June 18-20 at State Farm Arena in Glendale, Ariz., as reported by Ballislife in the previous set of FAB 50 rankings. Coach Josh Giles and his staff felt it is more advantageous for his program to attend Section 7 than it would for his team to chase the SoCal open regional crown. After all, his team is all underclass and CIF players have not been seen live by college coaches for over 16 months.
The Centennial-Sierra Canyon result was a swoon for Torrey Pines and San Diego basketball because the Falcons own a head-to-head victory over Centennial. So if Torrey Pines and Sierra Canyon were to meet in the SoCal open final, it would be at Torrey Pines' home gym because the CIF is not using large facilities or neutral courts for this year's regional. Torrey Pines has a bye in the first round and will host a regional semifinal on June 17.
Torrey Pines moved up 14 spots in the FAB 50 to No. 23 and could become the first San Diego County team to finish ranked No. 1 in the state of California since World War II. According to Cal-Hi Sports, San Diego Hoover finished 16-1 and ranked No. 1 in the state for 1945. Since the advent of the CIF State tournament in 1982, no San Diego Section team has won the major division title or finished No. 1. From a FAB 50 perspective, the team Torrey Pines has in its sights is the 2002-03 Horizon (San Diego, Calif.) team led by future NBA forward Jared Dudley. Horizon won its second of back-to-back CIF Div. IV state titles, finished 32-1 and No. 15 in the FAB 50. Its only loss came against eventual D1 state champ and FAB 50 No. 4 Westchester (Los Angeles), which was led by Elite All-American Trevor Ariza
How high can Torrey Pines climb in the final FAB 50? What will happen if Torrey Pines loses in the regional semifinals or Sierra Canyon knocks them out in Saturday's regional final?
Centennial could still finish as California's No. 1 ranked team, despite not playing in the regional, if Torrey Pines loses on Thursday. It's highly unlikely Sierra Canyon will be able to hop Centennial in next weeks’ rankings unless it completely blows out Torrey Pines by a wide margin in Saturday’s regional final. We'll have to consider it but Centennial does own the important head-to-head victory, which is always a strong FAB 50 rankings criteria.

Note: The FAB 50 powered by www.ebooksnet.com is a continuation of the National Sports News Service ratings that began in 1952. These were the first national high school rankings and the late Art Johlfs of Minnesota compiled them. The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section pool play playoffs is hard to understand for some fans across the country. When two teams are tied in pool play, the head-to-head result is the deciding factor on which team wins the pool. If there are more than two teams with the same record, the point system determines which team advances to the CIFSS Open Division championship game.
This season after two games in pool "B", Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood, Calif.), Damien (La Verne, Calif.) and Centennial (Corona, Calif.) are all tied with 1-1 won-loss records. On Friday, when the teams play the third game, two teams will finish 2-1. Whichever team won head-to-head from those two will advance.
From a national perspective previous FAB 50 No. 45 Centennial (Corona, Calif.) lost in its first pool play game to No. 7 seed Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood, Calif.), which traveled to the second-seed and beat them, 70-65. Centennial played its game without sophomore guard Kylan Boswell, who was in Colorado Springs, Col., for the USA Basketball 16U mini-camp over Memorial Day weekend. On Memorial Day Monday with Boswell back in the lineup, the Huskies defeated No. 6 seed Damien, 82-69. Boswell (13 points) was one of five Centennial players in double figures led by sophomore Allen McBride with 19 points.
Harvard-Westlake had a chance to take control of pool B, but fell to Mater Dei on Tuesday night, 61-57.
In pool A, it's simpler, as Etiwanda (the No. 4 seed) will travel to top seed and state No. 1 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) for the right to advance to the championship game. Both teams are 2-0 in pool play so far.
Etiwanda moved into the latest FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com after defeating No. 8 seed St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.), 48-46, on Tuesday night. Powerful Darvelle Wyatt led the Eagles with 15 points, including a late bucket to give Etiwanda a 46-43 lead. In its first pool game, Etiwanda downed No. 4 seed Ribet Academy (Los Angeles), 85-74. Ribet Academy had previously been FAB 50 ranked and got to as high as No. 4 in the state. That's how hard it is to win CIFSS open pool play games.
In its second pool play game, Ribet Academy was looking to shake up the FAB 50 and the state rankings when it traveled to face FAB 50 No. 10 Sierra Canyon. The talented Fighting Frogs held a 41-24 lead during the second quarter, but Sierra Canyon stormed back to win the game 82-70, to move its record to 14-0 on the season.
The difference in the second half of a game featuring a plethora of future D1 players was UCLA junior commit Amari Bailey. With Sierra Canyon in danger of dropping its first contest in 20 outings, Bailey put Sierra Canyon on its back. He scored 28 points in the second half and finishing with 38 on an array of dunks, drives and cutbacks. Shy Odom also had some important moments and finished with 18 points.
Sierra Canyon won its first pool play game, 60-46, over St. John Bosco as junior Ramel Lloyd Jr. had 25 points, including four 3-pointers.
It's ironic Sierra Canyon is now facing Etiwanda because it was the playoff foe its faced right before the pandemic shut down the CIF season down in March 2020. Sierra Canyon won in dramatic come-from-behind fashion in that SoCal open final after trailing by double-digits in the final two and a half minutes. The CIF state final was never played.
Sierra Canyon is the three-time defending SoCal open champion, including back-to-back CIF state championships in 2017-18 and 2018-19. Since its loss in the CIF Southern Section open division title game in 2018 (before the pool play format began), Sierra Canyon has won 20 consecutive playoff games, which is an incredible feat considering the competition level in the CIFSS playoffs.
It's reflected in the FAB 50, as Sierra Canyon is in the Top 10, while Etiwanda hovers near the bottom of the 50 teams. Sierra Canyon will be favored in the post-season until someone actually knocks them off.
Sierra Canyon won't be able to play the NorCal open representative in the CIF state title game, as the CIF is not hosting regional playoffs in that region of the state. However, a fourth consecutive SoCal title would be quite an accomplishment conspiring how many land mines there are along the way and potential rematches against teams looking for an avenging win.

The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section released its open division pool play matchups on Sunday and there were some surprises, but not at the top. Sierra Canyon, led by junior Amari Bailey, secured the top seed in the CIFSS Open Division playoffs by closing out the regular season with a 88-76 victory over Heritage Christian (Northridge, Calif.) on Saturday.
That game essentially knocked Heritage Christian out of the eight-team field comprised of two, four-team pools. Whomever wins each pool will play for the CIFSS open championship at the home site of the highest remaining seed.
The question was, who was going to be the No. 8 seed to open up against the Trailblazers? To our surprise, that team ended up being St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.), which last week handed Trinity League rival Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) its first loss of the regular season, as the two teams split games in league play. That loss knocked the Monarchs out of this week's FAB 50 after they came into the game ranked No. 33.
The Monarchs did win their 33rd consecutive outright or shared league title, but in the process lost Nebraska-bound Wilhelm Breidenbach for the post-season. He was injured in a win over St. Augustine (San Diego, Calif.) on May 15 at the Nike Extravaganza and did not play versus St. John Bosco. We figured Mater Dei would be seeded above Bosco, but are surprised by the Braves' No. 8 seed. We don’t feel they have the weakest resume of the eight teams in the field nor the weakest roster.
The new team in this week for Mater Dei (which will be judged in the playoffs for the team it has on the floor, not the one that went 26-1 during the regular season) is No. 2 seed Centennial (Corona, Calif.) at No. 45. The Huskies only lost one regular season game to No. 37 Torrey Pines (San Diego, Calif.), which is the favorite to win the CIF San Diego Section open crown. Torrey Pines would get its crack at the top CIFSS teams in the SoCal Regional playoffs, which begin June 15.
Mater Dei got the third seed (which makes Bosco's No. 8 even more surprising) with Etiwanda (Calif.) grabbing the No. 4 seed. Ribet Academy, which has spent time in the FAB 50 and only lost to Centennial in overtime, is the No. 5 seed. The No. 6 seed in Damien (La Verne, Calif.), which lost twice to Etiwanda in league play, with talented Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood, Calif.) grabbing the No. 7 seed.
The first pool play games are scheduled for May 28, the second set (1 vs. 5, 4 vs. 8 in pool A and 2 vs. 6 and 3 vs. 7 in pool B) June 1 and the final set (1 vs. 4, 5 vs. 8 in pool A and 2 vs. 3 and 6 vs. 7 in pool B) June 4.
CHSAA Spring Tourney Finals Set
The New York Catholic High Schools Athletic Association (CHSAA) Spring Tournament concludes its six-week run of games that salvaged a season for New York parochial schools this week. On Thursday it will be FAB 50 bubble club Cardinal Hayes (Bronx, N.Y.) taking on bubble club Xavieran (Brooklyn, N.Y.) for the Class AA title in the Kevin Pigott / Ray Nash Division Championship.
Both teams were the No. 2 seed in their respective division and enter the title game with identical 5-1 records. Both teams lost their first pool play game, and both needed overtime to win their fifth consecutive game on Monday in the tournament semifinals.
Cardinal Hayes defeated St. Francis Prep (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) in OT, 60-57, as the Terriers lost their first game of the tournament. Tobe Awaka led the way for Hayes in its semifinal victory with 25 points.
Xavieran needed two overtimes to defeat Archbishop Stepinac (White Plains, N.Y.), 57-53, as Nick Folk finished with 25 points. He canned six 3-pointers and made all six of his free throws. Samuel Gibbs added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the victors.
After the conclusion of the CHSAA Spring Tournament, we'll release the final East Region Top 20 rankings.
