]]>The post The History of the 720 Dunk appeared first on www.ebooksnet.com.
]]>THE HISTORY OF THE 720
Throughout the 80s and 90s, a 360 dunk was impressive enough to get you a high 40 or a 50 in a dunk contest, even though most 360 dunks were actually closer to a 180 or 240 dunk. It was also the go-to show-off game dunk that was a step up from a reverse dunk, which has been replaced by the windmill.
Then in the late 90s, Kobe and Vince Carter started throwing down 360 dunks in games on a regular basis. So it was only a matter of time that somebody took it to another level and that player was a high school kid named Jason Richardson, who supposedly pulled off a 540 dunk at the 1999 Magic's Roundball Classic.
There's no known video proof of the future NBA dunk champion's dunk, but a year later, we thought we were finally going to see the dunk happen when Vince Carter entered the NBA dunk contest (thanks to Kenny Smith for convincing Vince to accept on television). But Vince wasn't going to do a 540, he was supposedly going to try a 720...well, according to Tony Montana/Shaq.
After Vince threw down an unseen-by-most 36o windmill, Shaq told Reggie Theus Vince told him he was going to do the impossible 720 dunk. He didn't attempt it, but he did give most audiences their first sighting of an elbow hang dunk and a between the legs off two feet.
Six years went by without any buzz about 540 and 720 sightings and then in 2006, at an And1 Game in Houston, TX, local streetballer Taurian Fontenette aka The Air Up There, shocked the world by executing a 720 dunk in a game! TJ turned into an overnight sensation and was asked to perform the dunk on morning shows, ESPN shows and even in a television commercial (above). Although the initial And1 dunk gets the most attention, Air Up There, now known to many as Mr 720, performed the dunk in another game and that would be the last accepted 720 on a regulation rim we have seen.
There have been lots of 540 dunks posted online that have been called 720 dunks since that day but none of them are as close to a 720 as Air Up There's dunks.
Then in early 2014, there was buzz about Ben McLemore trying the dunk in the 2014 NBA dunk contest. Because of the horrible constantly-changing format of the contest, he didn't advance far enough to try (and most likely miss) it. Oh well, maybe next year he will be able to show us a "720" although, I'll be really happy if he just does a 540...that's closer to a 360...or a 360 that's called a 540. You get the point.

]]>Grayson Boucher aka The Professor, has been breaking ankles and entertaining fans of basketball for over a decade via And1 Mixtapes, ESPN Streetball Shows and the Ballup Tour and TV Show for the past few years but it was this summer where Streetball's most recognizable face took it to another level by covering his face.? Grayson along with filmmaker Robert 'SetFree' Monroe punk'd a bunch of random ballers at basketball courts by filming them playing Grayson wearing a Spiderman outfit.? The two Spidey videos went viral and racked up over 20 million views on YouTube alone which is probably more views than Sam Raimi's Spider Man 3 received (yeah I know that movie grossed close to $900 million but it was a disappointment and halted the franchise for a while).
While he wasn't playing around with amateurs on local playgrounds, he was playing around with real talent during the Ballup Summer tour. Each week, Grayson was facing off against well known streetballers and players with college and overseas experience that were trying to get a contract with the streetball organization. The results weren't much different as the viral vids. Class was in session and The Professor was teaching Ankle Breakers 101 and giving us footage for mixes like Ankle Breakers Vol 2!
If you want to know more about Grayson off the court and out of the basketball and superhero uniforms then be sure to check out his #BestYourself feature below.

]]>There has been a lot of talk that Air Up There has lost it in his 30's and doesn't have the bounce he became famous for when he was doing 720 dunks on TV and making LeBron run out of the building at All-Star Weekend. Well say what you say but this video speaks for itself and should make all doubters 2nd guess their statements.

]]>The post Exclusive Ballislife Interview with Ball Up Streetball Guards: Professor, Bone Collector & Pat the Roc!! appeared first on www.ebooksnet.com.
]]>Being a guard in streetball is very different than being a guard in a regular basketball game. Not only are guards expected to handle, distribute, and score the ball, but they are also expected to entertain keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats. Unlike regular basketball, streetball guards aren’t distinguished by point guard or shooting guard. They are usually differentiated as ball handlers and entertainers.
Ball handlers do what their title says: handle the rock. They get the crowd going with their spectacular moves making the defenders look foolish. From breaking opponents’ ankles with a couple of vicious crossovers or just toying with them showing off their yo-yo like abilities with the basketball, ball handlers keep the crowd in anticipation to see what they’ll do next. The Ball Up squad’s three main ball handlers-- Bone Collector, Professor and Pat The Roc-- have been doing their thing for a while now and still looking as strong as they first started. With the handle that Bone Collector has, it’s tough to stay in front of him without looking dumb. It doesn’t help when he’s known for having one of the dirtiest hesitation crossovers that it makes it almost impossible to stop him. Professor also has an array of moves that not only keeps the defender but the crowd guessing what’s going to happen next. From his explosive spin moves to the quickest stepbacks, he never lets the defender rest. Pat The Roc brings a unique set of handles doing moves that many have never seen before, and he makes it look so easy. It’s hard to even describe on paper what he does from the kick pass lobs to the off the elbow fakes. With these three and their skill sets, the crowd stays excited throughout the game.
[jwplayer mediaid="16069"]
Here’s what Bone Collector, Pat the Roc, and Professor had to say when we interviewed them.
Ball is Life: Describe your skill set. Do you have a go-to move to break someone down?
Bone Collector: My go-to move to break down a defender is my hesitation move.
Pat The Roc: Well rounded player. Pass, score, and handle with the best. Go-to move to get the crowd on their feet is the crazy legs.
Professor: My skill set is diverse, I do everything very good, what's exceptional is my mid range game and my handles. I don't have one go-to move; I have about 3 or 4...my spin move, hesitation, look away and baseline behind the back.
BIL: How did you develop your ball handling skills? Did you watch others or learn the moves by yourself?
BC: I developed my ball handling skills as a young child from my father. He taught me at the age of 7 how to dribble the ball. In the beginning I watched my father dribble the ball, and I tried to imitate the moves that he did.
PTR: Practice, practice, practice. It's about looking at those who did it before you, and molding it into your own flavor.
Professor: Practice, practice, practice for hours on end. It has to be a lifestyle to be great. Repetition is always key. You have to make your moves second nature. Absolutely, a lot of my moves came from my teammates and I put my own flavor in to them or remix them. I look at it like it's ok to take someone's move and incorporate it into your game as long as you do it just as good or better than them.
BIL: Do you feel like there are still moves out there to learn? Any new ones we haven’t seen yet?
BC: There are always moves to learn and ways to improve my ball handling and overall game. Yes, there are new moves that I have that haven't been seen yet; I am always working on new ways to improve as a player.
PTR: Oh yeah! It's 2012; by 2013 I'll have another 100 moves never seen before.
Professor: Absolutely...there’s always more moves to learn. And yes (to new moves)...but it can't be spoken upon.
BIL: What’s your favorite part of breaking someone down?
BC: The best part of breaking someone off (pause) is the crowd's reaction to the move and seeing the defender's face once they have become another victim to the Collector.
PTR: Knowing the defender is helpless. Knowing I can score at will and in the process hurt their feelings!
Professor: The crowd reaction, no question.
BIL: How different is it being a guard in streetball compared to regular games?
BC: In a regular game you are running the show and your team; in streetball you are trying to break down your defender one-on-one and entertain the crowd.
PTR: Either situation, you have to dominate. Run your team and be a problem no one has the answer to!
Professor: The game is played very different but the same principles apply. A lot of times it's easier with Ball Up because there are 2 and sometimes 3 point guards on the floor at once.
BIL: Do you have to change your game when playing in streetball games where entertainment is emphasized?
BC: In streetball games where entertainment is emphasized you have to please the crowd, but at the same time you have to still be a well rounded basketball player and be able to adjust to your defender and competition.
PTR: Nope. Either way I'm going to be flashy but legal. 99.9% of my moves you can do in a real game. It's just the point of having enough guts to do it in any situation.
Professor: Well, I always keep it entertaining regardless, but when it's a Streetball game it becomes a duty and not just something you do. You have to give the crowd their money's worth.
Streetball fans across the world know what Bone Collector, Pat the Roc, and Professor are capable of, but no one ever knows what’s going to happen next when they have the ball in their hands. When those three are on the court at the same time, you can’t help but feel bad for the defense.

]]>The Ball Up 2012 Tour started this Friday Night in Los Angeles at Cal State Dominguez Hills against Tyreke Evan’s Streetball Team, and it was a game filled with highlights from start to finish! Both teams started to pick up the competitiveness mid way through the 1st quarter. Bone Collector, one of a couple Ball Up players from LA, came out and did what he does best scoring after crossing a few defenders with his signature hesitation crossover. From Tyreke’s team, Jesse “The Kid” was firing early and was showing out with a few new moves that got the crowd excited. Mr. Afrika had the first dunk to get the crowd really going with a nasty fastbreak two-hand windmill. The second quarter started off with an Air Up There dunk off a lob from Pat the Roc which was followed up by this powerful windmill by Mr. Afrika.
The game started to break open with two back to back dunks by Springs, one of them off an oop. Springs showed why he’s still considered one of the top 1-foot dunkers in the streetball world. The Ball Up Team went on solid run with a couple of alley oops between Bone Collector and Mr. Afrika and a sick windmill by Special FX. Assassin from Tyreke Evan’s team started to heat up after hitting a few J’s. Sik Wit It, the other Ball Up player from LA, did what he does best and entertained the crowd with some of his dance moves while handling the rock and hitting a trey over Jesse, which led Jesse to come back at Sik Wit It with a few of his own moves. The half would end with a few more insane dunks from the Ball Up Team inlcuding a Pat the Roc lob to Air Up There, where Air Up There’s head was way over the rim. It's ridiculous how high the Ball Up Dunkers get on some of their dunks!
In the second half, Tyreke’s team tried to make the game closer with The Handy Man hitting a few threes and getting a few dunks, but the Ball Up Team came out just as strong and pushed the lead to over 20. The Ball Up Team played well together from their passing and alley-oops and even some defense led by Violator. Mr. Afrika finished with a few ridiculous windmills, and Bone Collector still has one of the nastiest, quickest crossovers that I’ve ever seen. The Ball Up Team walked away with the W against Tyreke Evan's team winning by over 30 points. The game was crazy, and it had the crowd jumping out their seats all night!
