NBA guard Ricky Rubio announced Thursday that he is retiring from playing basketball in the NBA. In a heartfelt post on X, formerly Twitter, the Spain Native stated he is stepping away to address his mental health. This came after he chose not to participate in the World Cup last summer.

"July 30th was one of the toughest nights of my life. My mind went into a dark place. I kind of knew I was going in that direction, but I've never thought I was under control of the situation. The next day, I decided to stop by professional career."

In the second year of a three-year, $18.44 million contract, both Rubio and the Cleveland Cavaliers agreed to a buyout. With that said, Rubio, 33, hasn't played a single game for the Cavaliers this season. Candid with his mental health journey, Rubio thanked the Cavaliers organization for their support throughout his journey. The Cavaliers will receive financial relief from the buyout, given he was due $6.1 million this season, and $6.4 million in 2024-2025.

"Special mention to Cleveland, said Rubio in a social media post. "You have an amazing organization, with Koby [Altman] and JB [J.B. Bickerstaff], who have been extremely respectful and understanding of my situation and caring for me as a person."

A true playmaker and floor general, Rubio was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves at No.5 in the 2009 NBA Draft. Before Draft Night, the Spain native played two seasons in Barcelona.

He went on to play for Minnesota for the first six years of his career, and then was traded to the Utah Jazz in 2017 in exchange for a 2018 first-round pick. From there, he spent several years bouncing from team to team. While he didn't lead the Timberwolves to a single playoff appearance, we can't forget his long locks and unselfish game play. While he wasn't the best shooter, he made up for that through defense. Having stellar IQ, Rubio never quite flourished into the star as expected, yet was never a bust. A solid starter, he was known as a flashy guard who was a spectacular facilitator.

A fan favorite in Utah, Rubio led the Jazz to the playoffs against the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2018. Hampered by injuries, he never returned despite Utah advancing to the Western Conference Semifinals against the Houston Rockets. Following a career high 13.1 points per game in 2017-2018, the former guard signed a three-year, $51 million contract with the Phoenix Suns. Once the Covid-19 Pandemic struck, he was then traded back to the Timberwolves in 2020.

Averaging a career low 8.6 points per game, Rubio was then traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in Aug. 2021, in exchange for Taurean Prince, and a 2022 second-round pick. Shortly after reaching 5,000 assists, the journeyman was traded to the Indiana Pacers in a deal that surrounded Caris LaVert. Due to an ACL tear and knee injury, the guard never played a single game for the Pacers.

It was then, he resigned with the Cavaliers on a three-year $18 million contract with Cleveland in summer of 2022. After much promise and talent on this roster, he played just a combined 67 games in two seasons. After starting most of his career, Rubio started just 10 games for Cleveland from the 2021-2023 season. For a majority of those two seasons, the former Cavalier spent time rehabbing a torn ligament in his knee.

Cavaliers President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman issues a statement on his retirement as of yesterday.

"“Ricky Rubio embodied everything a franchise would want from such an accomplished player, who helped instill a confidence and leadership quality that still resonates within our team,” said Altman. “We wish Ricky nothing but the best and remain supportive of his decision to continue focusing on his mental health.”

Through all the ups and downs, it seems Rubio has an appreciation for his time in the league.

"I have collected lots of good memories and great relationships. Minnesota, Utah, Phoenix, and Cleveland. Wow. Thank you!"

Despite several stints on various teams, Rubio marked his talent as an established EuroLeague player early in on his career. A EuroLeague Champion in 2010, the guard has been compared to the late Pete Maravich on several occasions. Coincidently, the basketball world lost Maravich 36 years ago to the date. Finishing second in rookie of the year voting in 2010, Rubio was named NBA All-Rookie First Team.

In addition to all of his NBA accolades, Rubio gained several awards outside the NBA. The FIBA World Cup MVP in 2019, he was also named EuroCup Champion (2008), Liga ACB Champion (2011), FIBA EuroChallenge Champion (2006), and EuroLeague Rising Star (2010). Having played overseas since the age of 14, Rubio was a silver medalist in the 2008 Olympics, next to the great Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol, and Rudy Fernández.

Not the first player to address mental health, Rubio had an impactful first season with the Cavaliers just a few years ago. It was then he teamed up with former teammate Kevin Love, who's also been very vocal about mental health through his career.

In 698 career games, Rubio averaged 10.8 points, 1.8 steals, 4.1 rebounds, and 7.4 assists. He was a career 32.4 percent shooter from the three, and 38.8 percent from the field. Very brave to share his story publicly, he's chosen self care and taking care of himself over anything else. Extremely, courageous, there's so much more to life than just basketball.

The Indiana Fever earned their second consecutive No.1 pick, while the Sparks, Mercury and Storm get their respective 2024 WNBA Draft orders.

No. 1 pick: Indiana Fever

(Photo by Chris Marion/NBAE via Getty Images)

The Indiana Fever officially hold the No. 1 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, and have the possibility of drafting basketball phenomenon Caitlin Clark. While Clark is eligible for this year's draft, she also has another year of eligibility, with the option of returning to Iowa. In a 30 minute special presented by ESPN in Bristol, Connecticut, the WNBA Draft order is set for Apr. 15.

With a 44 % chance of landing the first pick, Aliyah Boston was present to represent the Indiana Fever organization on Sunday afternoon. The former No.1 pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft, Boston was named WNBA Rookie of the year in her first season with Indiana. She briefly expressed her excitement of possibly adding another rookie star to play along side her at the podium.

"I think it is just going to be another talented player that we can use to help build us to be back to the franchise [Fever] was at, so I am super excited for this upcoming draft," Boston told Carolyn Peck. "Talking to them, I think that's going to be important because I had great vets that talked to me."

Boston also implied the importance of helping her new teammate achieve her goals. Paying it forward, the former South Carolina Gamecock strives to be a leader, and focuses on discipline. While Connecticut Sun Stephanie White was in attendance for the Lottery, the last time the Fever advanced to the playoffs was in 2016. You want to know what's ironic? White was the head coach of Indiana, coaching Tamika Catchings. With one WNBA Championship won by the Fever in 2015, this young team has the chance to compete again.

No. 2 pick: Los Angeles Sparks

With only an 18 % chance of securing the No. 1 Pick, the Los Angeles Sparks secured the No.2 pick in this years upcoming draft. Represented by Head Coach Curt Miller, the Sparks are in an excellent position to add a young star next to Jordin Canada, Zia Cooke, and Nneka Ogwumike. Coming off a 17-23 2023 win/loss record, the Sparks have a ?30-46 cumulative record over two seasons. While UConn's Paige Bueckers and Stanford's Cameron Brink have been linked to the No. 2 pick, it's unclear who the Sparks will take. One of the most iconic franchises in WNBA History, Los Angles has three WNBA Championships, although they haven't been to the postseason since the 2020 season.

Coach Miller touched upon what's needed for the Sparks to compete once again in the league. "Dynamic players available in this upcoming draft," said Miller. "But, excited about adding an impactful player in the locker room, as much as on the court. High character, someone that's coachable, and wants to learn from these great veterans in the locker room."

No. 3 pick: Phoenix Mercury

Represented by Mercury and Suns Owner, Mat Ishbia, along with daughter Jaime , Phoenix had a 28 % chance of landing the first overall pick. While they hoped for the first slot, the Mercury will certainly have the opportunity to draft a dynamic player at three. After finishing 9-31, Phoenix will look to bounce back behind Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi. One of the most successful franchises in WNBA history, they have three total WNBA Championships. With one of the best attendance records in the league, the Mercury reached 10 consecutive playoff appearances before falling short last season.

On Sunday afternoon, Ishbia noted Griner and Taurasi have been vital to the teams success. Phoenix selected Griner as the No. 1 overall pick in 2013, and Taurasi as the first pick in 2004. Together, they won an WNBA title in 2014.

"They're real excited, we are real excited," said Ishbia prior to the Draft Lottery. "BG [Griner] has been a big part of our success, along with Diana [Taurasi]."

Much like the Sparks, the Mercury won't know who will land in their land until certain players will decide they will ultimately declare for the WNBA Draft, or return to their respective collegiate teams.

No.4 pick: Seattle Storm

The Seattle Storm had the lowest odds at 10 % to land the first pick, and secured the No. 4 pick in this years WNBA Draft. Represented by Head Coach Noelle Quinn, the Storm finished 11-29 last season, and are in complete rebuild mode post Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart era. Led by guard Jewell Loyd, Seattle has four WNBA Championships, most recently in 2018 and 2020. While they had 7 consecutive playoff runs, the Storm missed out completely in the 2022-2023 season.

Former No. 1 overall pick selected by the Storm in 2015, Loyd averaged career highs in points (24.7), and rebounds (4.7). Seattle could use a guard to compliment Loyd in the backcourt, as she accounted for 31 % of the total offense. Even at the four slot, the Storm will have several options.

The 2024 WNBA Draft will take place on Apr. 15. The Draft Lottery was based off team's cumulative record over the past two seasons.

NBA Daily Parlay +885 .1u

NBA Bet #1 : Killian Hayes O .5 3PTM (-195)

Season Stats PPG: 10.9  | FG: 40.2 % | 3 PT: 32.5 % | FT: 77.3 % | REB: 3.3 | AST: 4.7 | STL: 1.3 | BLK: 0.5

The Detroit Pistons (2-9) will matchup against the Atlanta Hawks (5-4) at home tonight. Since the start of the season, the Pistons have opted to start guard Killian Hayes over Jaden Ivey.

If you're betting on the NBA, Hayes hasn't shot particularly well, especially from the field. However, one made three is a small amount, and this is a prop that's hit eight of the last eleven games, and 75 percent in the last four. Two three-pointers made in the past couple of matchups, Hayes will face a Hawks team that allows the 19th worst opponent three-point percentage per game (35.6 %).

Tonight, Trae Young will not suit up for Atlanta, a team that allows the 23rd most points scored per game (117). The Pistons guard has at least one three-pointer made in three of his last matchups against the Hawks, dating back to early 2023.

Why the over .5 3PTM will hit tonight

Hayes has been on fire at home, clocking in one three-pointer made in four of the past five games. Although Detroit has a ton of depth, this prop hit 80 percent in the last ten games, and 62 percent overall in the 2022-2023 season.

If we break down the statistics against Atlanta, they've allowed Kyle Lowry, of the Miami Heat, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to hit over the line in two straight matchups. Gilgeous-Alexander, who had a line of 0.5, ended up with three shots from long distance, while Kyle Lowry had four three-pointers. Guards Mike Coley, Cameron Payne, and Jalen Brunson have all hit over their prop lines in the past eight matchups against the Hawks.

Averaging nearly 11 points per game, Hayes plays 30.5 minutes, and has a combined nine three-point attempts in the past two matchups. A season 32.5 percent shooter from long distance, the Pistons guard will get a juicy matchup against the Hawks who allow 117 points per game, and 36.6 three-point attempts per matchup.

NBA Bet #2: Jonas Valanciunus O .5 Blocks (-190)

Season Stats PPG: 12.3 | FG: 50.5 % | 3 PT: 43.5 % | FT: 85 % | REB: 8.7 | AST: 1.8 | STL: 0.3 | BLK: 1.5

The New Orleans Pelicans (4-6) will matchup against the Dallas Mavericks (8-2) at home tonight. Jonas Valanciunus will face a Pelicans team, who will be without Trey Murphy III and Larry Nancy Jr. As on the injury report, Pelicans forward Herbert Jones is listed as a game time decision.

If you're betting on the NBA, the Pelicans center has at least one block in 80 percent of the last 10 games. In fact, he's had one block in three of the last five games, and 11 of the last 15 games. Facing the Mavericks at home, Valanciunus hit over .5 blocks in four straight home games, against the Warriors, Pistons, Hawks, and Mavericks. As far as home matchups, this prop hit seven of the last ten games in New Orleans, and 9 of the last 15.

Tonight, the Pelicans will face a Mavericks team, who are one of the worst defensive teams in the league in terms of points and rebounds allowed. Although Dallas only allows 3.7 blocks per game, it's hard to fade this prop that's been hit so frequent.

Here is why O .5 blocks will hit

Valanciunus will face rookie Dereck Lively II, who's known for more his defensive prowess than his offensive game. He will likely be faced with the challenge of stopping guards Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic in driving to the basket.

Coincidentally, the Pelicans last played the Mavericks two days ago. Valanciunus finished with two block against Kyrie Irving and Dereck Lively. Standing at 6 foot 11, the Pelicans center is averaging 1.5 blocks a game, and I am riding with the over tonight.

NBA Bet #3: Jaime Jaquez Jr O 8.5 Points (-120)

Season Stats PPG: 8.3 | FG: 47.9 % | 3 PT: 27.6 % | FT: 87.5 % | REB: 3.2 | AST: 2.2 | STL: 1.3 | BLK: 0.3

The Miami Heat (6-4) will matchup against the Charlotte Hornets (3-6) on the road tonight. For Miami, Caleb Martin and Tyler Herro are listed as out, and guard Josh Richardson is listed as a game time decision. For Charlotte, Terry Rozier, Bridges, and Bouknight are all listed as out for tonight. Gordon Hayward and rookie Brandon Miller are both game time decisions.

If there's one thing to know about Miami Heat's head coach Erik Spoelstra, he loves rookies and undrafted players.

If you're betting on the NBA, Jaime Jaquez Jr over 8.5 points has hit in five, straight games against the Wizards, Lakers, Grizzlies, Hawks, and Spurs. Although I rarely wager on rookies, Jaquez has seen increased playing time with several injuries across the roster.

Tonight, the Heat face a Hornets team that are one of the worst defensive teams in the league. Charlotte ranks 28th in opponent points scored (123.1), and allow teams to shoot 39 percent from long range. Much like last year, they rank near the bottom in field goal and free-throw percentage allowed.

Why Jaquez Jr will score over 8.5 Points

Jaquez Jr, the former UCLA Bruin, is averaging nearly 25 minutes per game, and 10.3 points in the month of November. A player with a versatile skill set, the Heat guard has a combined 27 field goal attempts in the last two matchups. He's coming off a 11 point performance against the San Antonio Spurs.

Over 8.5 seems low to me for a guard that hasn't average less than that since their matchup against the Brooklyn Nets. Given Charlotte is a terrible team, combined with injuries, I am riding the over points tonight. In fact, important to note, Jaquez Jr. played 38 points against the Hawks, and is coming off two straight games playing well over 30 minutes.

NBA Bet #4: Spurs vs. Thunder U 238.5 Points (-110)

The San Antonio Spurs (3-7) will face the Oklahoma City Thunder (6-4) tonight on the road. The Spurs, who have dropped five straight games will look to get back on track against the Thunder, who are 3-2 in their last five games. Two teams filled with young talent, it should be a great matchup between rookies Chet Holmgren and Victor Wembanyama.

For the Spurs, Keldon Johnson and Tre Jones are listed as OUT for tonights game. Sandro Mamukelashvili and Jeremy Sochan are both listed as game time decisions.

With a record of 3-7, the Spurs have a totals over/under record of 9-1-0, while Oklahoma City is 5-5-0 against totals. In their last ten matchups, the over/under record is 4-6, in which their last matchup hit the under.

The Thunder are filled with talent, and rank 8th in total points per game (115.9). For the Spurs, they will be without some heavy hitters tonight, and rank middle of the road in offense (113 points per game). In addition, the Thunder have the 4th best three-point percentage in the league (37.5), while the Spurs average 35 percent from beyond the arc. Defensively, the Spurs are the worst defensive team, allowing 124 points per game, while the Thunder are ranked 17th.

Why the under can hit tonight

Although these two teams have some star power on the offensive end, both teams play at a higher pace. Although on this case, the spotlight will be on both teams, since it is an In-Season Tournament game tonight.

If you're betting on the NBA, the Spurs will be without Keldon Johnson, who averages over 15 points per game. They will also be without Trey Jones, who contributes 8 points per game. The Thunder are coming off two straight unders against the Suns and Kings, while the Spurs have hit over totals in seven straight games. Both the Spurs and the Thunder don't take a lot of three pointers per game, and and the free-throw volume lacks on both sides.

Although the Spurs have a terrible defense, I am full fading what would be their 8th straight game hitting the over.

The Orlando Magic (2-0,1-0 Away) will matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers( 1-2, 1-0 Home) on the road tonight. With a 60 percent chance to win, the Lakers will look to bounce back from a 132-127 overtime loss against the Kings. For the Magic, they remain undefeated on the road, capturing victories over Portland and Houston. Here you will find the NBA betting odds, stats, trends, player prop bets, and predictions for Monday, October 30.

Orlando Magic vs. Los Angeles Lakers Odds

Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook

Magic vs. Lakers under 218 points

Although it may be early in the NBA season, the Magic are top team defensively, and the Los Angeles Lakers rank in the top half on the defensive end. Filled with youthful talent, Orlando starts the season undefeated, while the Lakers are 1-2. For the Magic, they've had easier matchups so far, both against the Houston Rockets and Portland Trail Blazers, both sub .500 teams. For the Lakers, they've matched up with the Kings, Suns, and Nuggets, whom are all projected to be top teams in the West this season.

While the Magic are 0-2-0 versus totals, the Lakers are 1-2-0. For Los Angeles, they had several off season acquisitions after being swept by the Nuggets in the playoffs. With several new pieces (Taurean Prince, Gabe Vincent, Jaxon Hayes, Cam Reddish, and Christian Wood) Darvin Ham now has the challenge of putting it all together. While it takes time to develop chemistry, Ham also has the challenge of managing LeBron James minutes.

The Lakers have the depth and talent to average nearly 130 points on any given night, especially if Anthony Davis can play to his max potential. Though three games, the Lakers rank 19th in offensive rating (106.4), averaging 111.3 points per game. Only averaging 29.1 percent from three-point range, Los Angeles also ranks near the bottom in field goal percentage (40). So far, James and Davis average a combined 48.7 points per game, with D'Angelo Russell sitting in third with 14 points a game.

The Lakers for sure rely on their bench outside their starting five, which includes Rui Hachimura, along with the players I stated above. Averaging 26.3 points as a bench unit, any of these players have the capability to take over games and score. Tonight, they play a Magic defense thats ranks third in defensive rating, and allows the least amount of most scored in the league.

Why the under can hit this game

Jamahl Mosley, Head Coach of the Orlando Magic, prides himself on leading a top defensive team. Led by Franz Wagner and Cole Anthony, Orlando has several dogs on defense, including Jalen Suggs. Although their lead over Portland wasn't significant, they held the Trail Blazers to 39.8 percent field goal, and 28.1 percent three-point shooting. In their season debut, the Magic held the Rockets to 86 points on 40.5 percent field goal shooting.

Defensively, the Magic impressed Portlands head coach Chauncey Billups, in which they made the Blazers miss six of their last seven shots in the final quarter. They also held the opposition to just 38 point scored in the paint, which should be a challenging task tonight.

As elite as they've been on defense, the Magic are tied 8th with the Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics in offensive rating (113.5). Not just one star scoring a majority of the points, Orlando has a well balanced attack. With mainly a clean slate of health tonight, Orlando will post likely start Jalen Suggs, Markelle Fultz, Wendell Carter Jr., Franz Wagner, and Paolo Banchero. Additionally, the Magic are second in the league in bench points per game (48.5)

Overall, the totals split 1-1 last season, and the over/under is 5-5 in their last ten games. Last season, the Magic finished one of the worst teams in the league, and 40-42-0 against the over/under. If you're betting on the NBA, the under is your safest bet, especially with LeBron James listed as probable. With both teams ranking in the bottom half in pace, I except this to be a relatively low scoring game tonight.

Franz Wagner O 18.5 Points (-110)

Season Stats PPG: 21 | FG: 39.3 % | 3 PT: 37.5 % | FT: 93.3 % | REB: 4.5 | AST: 2.5 | STL: 1 | BLK: 0.5

Career Stats vs Los Angeles: PPG: 17.8 | FG: 48.3 % | 3 PT: 27.8 % | FT: 76.5 % | REB: 5 | AST: 4 | STL: 0.8 | BLK:0.5

Franz Wagner is certainly having a fantastic start to the season. In two games, Wagner is averaging over 20 points a game and has been a difference maker for the Magic. The Lakers are a middle of a road defensive team, allowing teams to shoot 35 percent from downtown. For Wagner, over 18.5 points has hit in two straight games this season, including 23 against Portland, and 19 against Houston. Although this prop hit only 50 percent in the last ten games, Wagner has taken a huge leap forward for the Magic.

Coming off back-to-back solid games, Wagner faces a Laker team that allows 116.6 points which is 20th in the league. The lowest he's scored was 15 points agains the Lakers, and last scored 21 points against them in March of 2023. Through the first two games, the forward has six made threes, a part of his game he worked on in the off season. If LeBron James is out for tonight's matchup, I will be even more confident on this pick.

Why this prop will hit

It's clear there are several scoring options for the Magic. However, both Wagner and Banchero have emerged as leaders of this team on a nightly basis. Averaging 18.6 points per game in his sophmore year, Franz is extremely versatile, competitive, and has a deadly step back shot. Although Banchero has emerged as their "best player," Wager is extremely efficient in spacing the floor.

If you're betting on the NBA, Franz Wagner over 18.5 points hit 56 percent in 2022-2023, and 53 percent in his last fifteen games. Despite only shooting under 40 percent from both the field and the three point line, I'm more confident he can put up more points.

Cole Anthony 15+ Points, Rebounds, Assists

Season Stats PPG: 19 | FG: 51.9 % | 3 PT: 44.4 % | FT: 66.7 % | REB: 6 | AST: 2 | STL: 0 | BLK: 0.5

Career Stats vs Los Angeles: PPG: 13 | FG: 34.8 % | 3 PT: 33.3 % | FT: 64.3 % | REB: 4.2 | AST: 4.2 | STL: 0.8 | BLK:0.5

Sometimes I like to pick the safest bet, and that is Cole Anthony over 15 + Points, Rebounds, and assists. If you're betting on the NBA and choosing not to set up a parlay, I would be confident in taking Anthony over 18.5. This prop has hit in his first two games against Houston and Portland, and 50 percent in two games against the Lakers. A rising star in the NBA, Anthony hit this prop 90 percent in the last ten games, and 14 of the last 15 games. Hitting in the last five games, it's extremely hard to fade this prop.

This year, the Lakers rank 25th in rebounds allowed, and 16th in total assists (25.7). Even off the bench, Anthony has been averaging strong numbers. Imagine if he was a starter for Orlando? Although he's been a primary bench player, the guard is averaging 26 minutes a game, and is shooting extremely efficient from the field (51.9 percent). The fact that Cole Anthony has a combined 27 shot attempts in two games, makes me even more comfortable about this pick.

Prior to NBA Media Day, the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks made blockbuster trades, each acquiring much needed pieces for their backcourts. The Milwaukee Bucks acquire 7x All-Star Damian Lillard from Portland, and the Boston Celtics land defensive specialist Jrue Holiday.

Damian Lillard spent his entire career with Portland

The saga between Damian Lillard and the Portland Trailblazers finally came to an end this week. In July, Lillard, 33, had requested a trade from Portland, an organization he spent eleven seasons with. Throughout his tenure, Lillard led the Trail Blazers to the playoffs eight times, resulting in zero NBA Championships. In several playoffs runs, Portland made it to the Western Conference Semifinals three times and had one appearance in the Western Conference Finals against Golden State.

Loyal to Portland, Lillard had a career average of 25.5 points, 1 steal, 6.7 assists, and 4.2 rebounds. No. 0 is Portland's all-time leader in Points (19,376), Offensive Win Shares (86.8), Three-Point Field Goals (2,387), Three-Point Field Goal Attempts (6,410), Free-Throw Attempts (4,946), Free-Throws (4,427), and Player Efficiency Rating (22.5).

Lillard failed to win a Championship in Portland

After finishing 33-49, the Trail Blazers finished near last in the Western Conference. Since the hire of head coach Chauncey Billips, Portland hasn't made a trip to the playoffs since the 2020-2021 season. After a disappointing finish, the franchise earned the third overall pick in the NBA Draft Lottery. Despite Lillard vocalizing his preference to play with other stars on numerous occasions, the Trail Blazers opted to retain the third pick. With a crowded backcourt, consisting of Lillard, Anfernee Simons, and Shaedon Sharpe, the organization drafted guard Scoot Henderson, from G-League Ignite. It was apparent Henderson was selected as the heir to Damian Lillard.

No. 0 gave Portland and General Manager Joe Cronin every opportunity to improve and build a championship roster. Besides Henderson, Portland reached a contract with Jerami Grant for $160 Million over five years. Less than ten days later, Lillard requested a trade. In his time in Portland, Lillard was a 7x NBA All-Star, the 2012-2013 Rookie of the Year, and was named a member of the NBA 75th Anniversary team. Last season, the point guard averaged a career-high in points per game (32.2).

Lillard to the Heat?

Damien Lillard had one destination in mind, and that was the Miami Heat. While that was his preference, Cronin made it known he would only trade Lillard for the right package, which included pursuing a Regardless of his wishes, the Miami Heat and Milwaukee Bucks couldn't strike a deal. In fact, Lillard was on the brink of facing discipline after his agent warned several NBA teams about the star's preferable landing place. According to Shams Charania of the Athletic, Miami was inclined to make an offer this summer.

“For their part, league sources say the Heat were prepared in July and August to offer up to three first-round draft picks — with Tyler Herro going to a third team — and multiple second-rounders and swaps along with expiring contracts and 2022 first-round pick Nikola Jovi?. But the Blazers were disinterested, with each side developing a level of contentiousness. (Shams Charania, the Athletic).

As the months went on, trade talks became more and more stagnant. At one point, Lillard considered a return back home. Per reports, Joe Cronin had every intention of moving Dame [Lillard]. Though we will never know the true story behind the negotiations, Damian Lillard made one aspect clear, his relationship with the Trail Blazers front office had tarnished. Once he was traded, No. 0 put out a bold statement via X:

"The casuals won't be addressed, but the Trail Blazers fans and city of Portland that I love truly will be... and they will be addressed truthfully. Stay tuned. Excited for my next chapter! " @Bucks

Milwaukee trades for Lillard

With less than a week before the start of training camp, many wondered the status of Damian Lillard and the Portland Trail Blazers. With several rumors that swirled for months, the Bucks were the "secret" team to land the star in the East. On Wednesday, Damian Lillard was shipped to Milwaukee as part of a three-team trade with the Phoenix Suns and Portland Trail Blazers. In return, Portland received Deandre Ayton and Toumani Camara from the Suns, Jrue Holiday from the Bucks, and a 2029 first-round pick from Milwaukee. Additionally, they will receive two first-round pick swaps with the Bucks in 2028 and 2030.

Phoenix received Grayson Allen from Milwaukee, along with Keon Johnson, Nassir Little, and Jusuf Nurkic, all from the Blazers. Lillard now joins one of the best players in the league, Giannis Antetokounmpo who both welcome championship expectations. The guard joins an organization, who most recently won an NBA Championship in 2021.

Milwaukee welcomes Lillard with open arms

On Monday, thousands of Bucks fans gathered outside the stadium for Lillards welcome rally. "It's Dame Time, Milwaukee!" was seen on billboards no less than three days after the trade news. The newest Bucks member was seen with his two children, sporting a green sports outfit.

Monday was Media Day, and Lillard expressed his thoughts on the trade, and becoming the newest addition in Milwaukee. He stated things are "new" with transition, and it "has been a great experience."

"The way that my family and I were embraced when we got here, to feel wanted, and to feel desired, and to feel something fresh and new-- it's definitely been a boost of energy and focus, and my excitement going into this season, " said Lillard.

Lillard expressed his excitement over the pairing with the 2x MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Bucks have arguably the greatest duo since the Oscar Robertson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar days.

"I don't think its a secret how much I want to win," Lillard said in his presser. "That's how I got here today. They want to win equally as bad as I do. I couldn't be more excited, I couldn't be more thankful for this opportunity to be a part of this organization. "

Lillard mentioned the hospitality the Bucks showed his family was great, and the welcoming was something he "really appreciated." Lillard stated his arrival in Milwaukee has been chill, and could "tell it was a family environment right away." He mentioned being embraced made him feel wanted, and his family is getting "comfortable."

Bucks, Celtics are equally viewed as potential Champions

The Milwaukee Bucks became the immediate favorites to win the NBA title after the trade at +450. Then, there was a another twist in the story. The Portland Trail Blazers immediately flipped Jrue Holiday and struck a deal with the Boston Celtics. In a shocking move, the Celtics acquired Holiday in exchange for Robert Williams III, Malcom Brogdon, and two future first-round picks. The Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks are now equally favored at +400 odds to win a title. Prior to the acquisitions, Boston were the heavy favorites in the Eastern Conference.

The impact of Lillard on the Bucks Franchise

The Milwaukee Bucks are two years removed from an NBA Championship, and were always considered a favorable team in the East. The addition of Lillard ascends them into a superteam, and immediately gives both sides a chance to win. After the elimination against Miami last season, Milwaukee finally found their missing chest piece. The pairing of the two super stars creates the opportunity to be one of the best pick and roll duos in the league.

"I'm a pick and roll player, I've played a lot of pick and roll in my career. When I think about playing with him [Giannis], I've just tried to figure out, how do you defend it," said Lillard. He pointed out that he's "excited" to play with Giannis, and "never had an opportunity like this before."

Besides Giannis, No. 0 joins a talented core, which consists of Khris Middletown, Brook Lopez, Malik Beasley, and Bobby Portis. "When I looked at the roster, it was very easy to make sense of what my job is going to be," said Lillard on Media Day.

Although there is substantial amount of talent on the floor, the point guard knows chemistry has to be established alongside the hype. Always the underdog throughout his career, Lillard admits he's done more "underachieving rather than overachieving." He's excited for this opportunity, and "at my age and this stage in my career, I think it came at the right time," said Dame. Despite the fact Giannis and Lillard look great on paper, he admits "the work has to get done."

Lillard implied his defense has improved over the years, and coming into a "defensive minded team," makes it that much easier.

Jrue Holiday bolsters the Celtics backcourt

Celtics executive Brad Stevens learned from the best, Danny Ainge. Once Jrue Holiday was traded from Milwaukee, several reports indicated the Blazers would move on from the guard. It's been a whirlwind of an offseason for Boston, who traded Marcus Smart in the exchange for Kristaps Porzingis. With Derrick White set as the teams starting point guard, questions lingered around Malcom Brogdon, and his relationship with the organization. Due to injury concerns, Boston was unable to trade Brogdon over the summer.

Holiday joins the Celtics organization as a 2x NBA All-Star, 2x NBA All-Defensive First Team, and an NBA champion. On Celtics Media Day, Brad Steven expressed the Celtics are trying to win a championship, and talked about paying a "real price" for pristine players.

Jaylen Brown describes Holiday as "as assassin," and will replace the defensive intensity that the C's lost with Marcus Smart. Known for his defensive prowess, Holiday will join White in a ferocious backcourt. Although Boston is thin at the front court, the addition of Jrue is vital to a potential championship run. No 4. joins a championship caliber team as a player who averaged almost eight assists last season, number's the Celtics haven't seen since the Rajon Rondo Days. Holiday joins a loaded roster, which includes Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and Derrick White.

Defeated by the Miami Heat in game seven of the Eastern Conference Finals, the Celtics made a much needed upgrade at the point guard position.

Both Milwaukee and Boston are the clear favorites in the East, after making individuals moves to improve their chances of winning the title. Unable to get over the hump, both teams feel their acquired players will help reach their championship goals.

In 2019, Jonathan Kolb was named New York Liberty GM, after working as the WNBA Director of Basketball Strategy and Analytics. A few years into his tenure, Kolb declared his strategy for organizational growth and success. He later emphasized a two-year advancement plan, which included the future addition of several key pieces in the long run. Overall, Kolb has certainly fulfilled his promise to gather and develop a talented, championship team.

With vital moves to make, Jonathan Kolb became the 5th GM for the franchise. After finishing 7-27 in 2018, and 10-24 in 2019, the New York Liberty made history in the 2020 WNBA Draft. With the first No. 1 pick in franchise history, the Liberty selected Sabrina Ionescu. Along with Ionescu, New York compiled several picks, including the acquisition of Jocelyn Willoughby. Following Ionescu's inaugural season in New York, Kolb struck another luminous move. In December 2021, New York named Sandy Brondello their ninth head coach, following her departure from Phoenix.

And then came one of the biggest trades in the history of the organization.

The acquisition of Jonquel Jones

(Brandon Todd/New York Liberty)

Following Kolb's promise to bring a championship caliber team to Brooklyn, New York landed Jonquel Jones in a three-team deal. Once traded to New York for the 2021 No. 1 pick, Natasha Howard was exported to Dallas, along with Crystal Dangerfield, for the exchange for Jonquel Jones. The Dallas Wings sent 3-and-D forward Kayla Thorton to New York, and Connecticut received guard Tyasha Harris and Rebecca Allen.

The former MVP, Jonquel Jones, brings more than just scoring to Brooklyn. In her seventh season, Jones has an interior presence the Liberty desperately needed. Along with inside scoring, Jones remains a threat beyond the perimeter, and is a tenacious defender. The addition of Thornton and Jones added an immediate impact on the Liberty's frontcourt, especially with their defensive skill sets.

Following the introductory press conference of Jonquel Jones, Kolb expressed his gratitude for upper management [Joe Tsai, Clara Wu Tsai, Oliver Weisberg].

"Deals like this are hard. It takes time and it takes a lot of people, so it's not just one person," Kolb told reporters. "We are not here at this table with you guys today without their investment in our team, not only monetarily, but their care factor is through the roof." (Via Yes Network).

Following the presser, it's clear that the organization is full of synergy. With one goal in common, New York is striving for its first WNBA title in franchise history. Following the addition of Jones, Kolb had one more item on his wish list, the free agency acquisition of All-Star Breanna Stewart.

The New York Liberty sign All-Star Breanna Stewart and Courtney Vandersloot in free agency

(Brandon Todd/New York Liberty)

Considered one of the greatest signings in WNBA history, The New York Liberty signed Breanna Stewart back in February. Following the news, Kolb found the team's final missing player in veteran Courtney Vandersloot.

Though some players haven't liked the idea of a "super team," it's hard not to envision it. In one of the most striking off-season's, New York was able to fill the gaps with three special players within a single month. Already filled with talent, including Marine Johannes, Betnijah Laney, Stefanie Dolson, and Sabrina Ionescu, the Liberty added the heavy anchors. With Stewart taking significantly less pay, she already had prior experience playing with both Jones and Vandersloot overseas.

Following the free agency signings, the Liberty GM touched upon this incredible time to inherit such impactful players [ Stewart, Jones, Vandersloot], and what impact it will have on the organization.

"It's been a whirlwind. But look, if you want to build something special, like we said in the start, special and sustainable, you need that incremental improvement and we did that year over year," said Kolb (Yes Network). "We really wanted to enhance a robust player experience with the Liberty, and I think that the players that here, see our vision, they trust us, and now I'm excited for the fans as well."

The impact of the offseason and the 2023 season

Since the offseason, Kolb and the Liberty have built quite the robust roster. With a playoff spot clinched, the New York Liberty are 28-7, and remain 1.5 games back for the top seed. After the matchup on Monday, Kolb once again expressed this team is not done yet.

"If we can achieve a No. 1 seed, that's a major goal, especially with the growing pains," said Kolb. "I think when you look at our record post All-Star, it's really impressive." Since July 15th, the Liberty hold a league best .824-win percentage over the Aces.

The Liberty defeated the Las Vegas Aces, 82-63, to win their first ever WNBA Commissioner's cup. Off to their best start in franchise history, this roster has far met and exceeded expectations. Filled with copious amounts of talent, this Liberty team has found chemistry and stride, in both their starting five and second unit. Knowing each player has to sacrifice their game when fighting for a Championship, each individual player has achieved several accolades this season.

Breanna Stewart

Breanna Stewart, an MVP candidate is having a career year in Brooklyn. Through 35 games, she broke the single-season franchise scoring record, along with the single-season franchise rebounding record. With 38 points against the Lynx, Stewart set a Liberty franchise record for single season 30-point games with 6. She scored a career-high 45 points back in May against the Indiana Fever, on 15-21 field goal shooting. Whether it's a mid-range or a long jumper, Stewart is an elite scorer. Stewart, 29, ranks just second behind Jewel Loyd in overall points scored per game. Along with Jones, she's brought much needed frontcourt strength on both sides of the ball.

Courtney Vandersloot

For Courtney Vandersloot, the point guard recently reached 4,000 career points. Vandersloot, 34, signed with New York after playing all twelve seasons with the Chicago Sky. Through 34 games, Vandersloot has proven herself a true floor general for this team, with tremendous IQ. Besides Alyssa Thomas, the floor general ranks second in assists, with 275 on the season. Her ability to successfully run the point has taken pressure off of Ionescu, who thrives in off ball situations.

Jonquel Jones

Although it took time for Jonquel Jones to adjust after an injury, she's found her stride in this lineup. Since the All-Star break, Jones has 11 total games with double-digit rebounds, including named Commissioner's Cup MVP. Her defensive and blocking mastery has been the difference maker for New York. In six games post All-Star break, the Liberty forward averaged 16.5 points and 12.7 rebounds per game, and ranks 13th in second chance points. On August 24, Jones finished with 21 points, and 14 rebounds in an exhilarating 95-90 overtime win against Connecticut.

Sabrina Ionescu

New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu knows what it takes to win on a championship contending team. After signing a multiyear extension in May, she broke the all-time three-point contest record with 37. This season, the Liberty guard became the fastest player to reach 200 threes in WNBA history (July), and became the fastest guard to reach 500 career rebounds. She currently leads the WNBA in 119 three-pointers made this season. The sharpshooter has been able to step up in crucial moments, including making free-throws in the final seconds against Connecticut.

The importance of New Yorks role players

(Brandon Todd/New York Liberty)

Though the addition of Stewart, Vandersloot, and Jones was pure brilliance, Kolb created a dominant group of players on paper, whom are all exceptionally talented. Betnijah Laney former defensive player of the year, has been exceptional on both sides of the floor. In line with Kolb's strategy, the formation of Laney, Jones, and Thorton has been key for the Liberty on defense. Post All-Star break, New York ranks third in defensive efficiency, and is the top team when it comes to defensive rebounding.

Evolution of the organization and growth of the franchise

Now considered a rivalry, the New York Liberty and Las Vegas Aces matched up for the fifth and final time, including the Commissioners Cup. Excluding the cup, both teams are respectfully the best in the league, in which New York won the series, 3-1. Shortly, after the Libertys victory on Monday, GM Jonathan Kolb had some words about the evolution of the team.

"I think it says how far we've come," Kolb told the media. "I've gone back to 2019 to hereit's surreal, for me personally, just to look around this arena and see these fans that have been with us the whole way."

On Monday, the Liberty set an attendance record of 11,615 vs. the Aces at the Barclays Center.

"To call this home, and to come together for a game like this, this was huge," Kolb told reporters. " We want to be a Liberty town in the summer, and it's really turned into that. I think when you see outside the players, likeness on the buildings, on the subways walking around Brooklyn you see [Laney] jerseys, [Sabrina] jerseys, it's been really special."

The main goal: to bring a championship to New York

Kolb's vision has always been to create a championship caliber team. Now that he's done so, he admits that consistency is key, and that the vision is finally coming together. The evolution of the team has been remarkable, although Kolb admits there's still more work to be done. The Liberty haven't always maintained large leads, especially in the first half of the season.

"Now it's about when we build those leads, maintaining them, and then carrying that momentum into the postseason. I think it shows we know who we can be, and it's just about consistency. Now it's leaning into what the winning formula is every night."

Through the first half of the season, the Liberty committed 15.2 turnovers a game, which was 10th worse in the league. Since then, Sandy Brondello's squad has done a much better taking caring of the ball, only averaging 13.2 turnovers since the break.

"I think we've done a much better job taking care of the ball," Kolb told reporters. "That's something for us where we've struggled." "I think we have done a much better job of cleaning the turnovers and really maximizing our possessions."

With a tough five game stretch to end the regular season, the Liberty currently are the second seed. Since the inaugural season in 1997, Kolb, along with the staff, players, and coaches, are looking to bring the first ever championship to New York.

Head Coach Sandy Brondello, recently moved up to 9th on the all-time coaching list with 200 wins. Her ability to incorporate several stars and chemistry has been astounding.

"This is a great group people, but it's not necessarily an easy coaching job. She's done a great job of getting this team to buy in," praised Kolb. The Liberty matchup against the Connecticut Sun on Friday, at the Barclays Center.

Team Recaps

Atlanta Hawks

?The Atlanta Hawks have 1 NBA Championship in 49 total appearances and won their only championship in 1958. The Hawks lost to the Miami Heat in last year’s First Round, and they are looking for revenge. Atlanta ranks 3rd in Points Per Game (118.4), 18th in Assists Per Game (25), 10th in Rebounds per Game (44.4), 22nd in Three-Point Shooting Percentage, and 26th in Opponent Points Per Game (118.1). After a 7-3 start to the Season, Atlanta was 17-20 by New Years Day. By the time February came along, the Hawks fired Head Coach Nate McMillan, who took them to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021.

In late February, former Head Coach of the Utah Jazz, Quin Snyder, signed a 5-year deal to become the next Head Coach of the Atlanta Hawks. Since Snyder’s debut against the Washington Wizard, the Hawks finished 10-11, and lost their last two games of the regular season. Although Atlanta lost to the Heat last season, the addition of guard Dejounte Murray should take some pressure of All-Star Guard, Trae Young. Although the Atlanta Hawks have two extremely talented guards, this team has been mediocre all season.

Strengths

?The Atlanta Hawks are a high scoring team, and they rank 3rd in the league in points per game. They are a very efficient team at the line, ranking 3rd in the league in Free-Throw Percentage (81.8), and 9th in Field Goal Percentage (48.1). The Hawks also rank 1st in the league in Field Goals Made (44.6).

It’s important to note Trae Young ranks 10th in the League in Points-Per Game with 26.2. In addition, Young is averaging over 10 Assists per game, which is 2nd in the league and a career high. Although Trae struggled shooting percentage wise, he is more efficient from the field and three-point range on the road.? Guard Dejounte Murray was acquired to help Guard Trae Young in the backcourt. He’s averaged 20.5 Points-Per-Game, 6.1 Assists, 5.3 Rebounds, and is shooting 46.4 percent from the field. Like Trae Young, Murray shoots better from the three-point on the road (36.2 percent).

Weakness

?The Atlanta Hawks can score, and sometimes numbers can be deceiving. Although Atlanta ranks 9th in Field Goal Percentage, they rank 21st in Three-Point Shooting (35.2). Given the league caters to the three-point shot, this is a huge disadvantage for this team. Furthermore, Trae Young is shooting 33.5 percent beyond the arc this season, compared to 38.2 percent last year. Apart from that, they are not a team that frequently gets to the free-throw line.

It’s no secret the Atlanta Hawks also have depth issues. If the Hawks want some decent three-point shooting, they will have to rely on guard Bogdan Bogdanovic, who is shooting 40 percent beyond the arc. One of the Hawks’ biggest weaknesses is their lack of defense. Ironically, this is a top scoring team that ranks 26th in Opponents points per game (118.1). Even Worse, they allow opponents to shoot 35.6 percent from the three-point line. Although Young has been the star of this team, Atlanta is open to a trade. According to CBS Sports, “Hawks front office has ‘green light’ to consider moving All-Start guard (Trae Young).”

Key Stats

?Trae Young is averaging 19.8 points and 9.8 assists against the Miami Heat this season. He’s been ice cold from the three-point, shooting 20 percent and 35.6 from the field against Miami.

?Dejounte Murray averages 18.5 points per game and 5 assists per game against the Heat. Much like Young, the Heat held Murray to 29.6 Three-point shooting, and 43.9 percent from the field.

?Center Clint Capela is averaging 13.3 Points and 9.7 Rebounds against the Heat this year.

Miami Heat

?The Miami Heat have total of 3 NBA Trophies in 24 appearances. Although the Heat finished as the #1 Seed in the East last season, they lost to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals.? Although Miami is 1st in the Southeast Division, they’ve regressed. They finished 44-38 and sit in the Play-In Tournament.? Stat- wise, the Heat rank last in the league in Points Per Game (109.5), 25th in Assists Per Game (23.8), 26th in Rebounds Per Game (40.6), and 26th in Three Point Percentage (34.8).

?Although Miami struggles in most of those categories, they are 2nd in the league in Opponent Points-Per Game (109.8), and Opponent Field Goal Attempts (83.2). The Heat started their season 12-15 and won 4 out of their 5 last regular season games. Although Miami has not performed to their expectations, Head Coach Erik Spoelstra has experience in the postseason, and Jimmy Butler (Playoff Jimmy) is known for his tough playoff performances. Given Kyle Lowry has been out, can Miami advance far given they do not have a true playmaker?

Strengths

?The Heat are one of the best defensive teams in the league. They do not allow many points per game, and they rank 3rd in the league in Field Goal Attempts (21.1). They also rank 8th in Steals Per-Game (7.0). In addition, they rank 6th in the league in Opponent Rebounds Per Game (41.8), and 2nd in the league in opponent field goal attempts (83.2). Regarding Rebounds, Miami ranks 1st in the league in Opponent Offensive Rebounds Per Game (8.9). Although they do not get to the free-throw line much, they make their shots when it matters. Miami is 2nd in the league in Free-Throw percentage (83.1). In addition, Miami handles the ball well, and does not commit as high of turnovers compared to the rest of the NBA.

Weakness

?Although Miami is a very good defensive team, they allow opponents to shoot 36.7 percent from the Three-Point, and 48.2 percent from the Field. They do not get to the free-throw line frequently and rank dead last in the league in points scored. In addition, the Heat do not shoot the ball well beyond the arc (34.4) and rank towards the bottom in Assists. Although Miami has stars in Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler, they lack a true point guard and playmaker. Tyler Herro is perfect as a 2 guard, and Gabe Vincent has been starting in place of Veteran Point guard Kyle Lowry.

Key Stats

?The Miami Heat won the regular season series 3-1 against the Atlanta Hawks.

?Jimmy Butler is averaging 25 points and 6.3 assists against the Hawks this season. He shot 100 percent from the Three-Point, and 63.2 percent from the Field in those games.

?Bam Adebayo averages 24.5 Points Per Game, 1.8 Steals, and 9.5 Rebounds against Atlanta. He’s also shooting 92.3 percent from the Free-Throw line.

?Guard Tyler Herro struggled in his 4 games against Atlanta. He’s averaging 14.8 points per game, 5.5 assists, and shooting 21 percent from the Three.??

Minnesota Timberwolves

?The Minnesota Timberwolves have a total of 11 playoff appearances and never won an NBA Championship. Furthermore, Minnesota lost to the #2 Seed Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA First Round last season. The Timberwolves rank 13th in Points Per Game (115.8), 8th in Assists Per Game (26.2), 23rd in Rebounds Per Game (44.4), 13th in Three-Point Shooting Percentage, and 18th in Opponent Points Per Game (115.8). The Wolves made some moves, acquiring Center Rudy Gobert in exchange for Malik Beasley, Patrick Beverly, Leandro Bolmaro, Walker Kessler, Jarred Vanderbilt, 2023 first-round pick, 2025 first-round pick, 2026 pick swap, 2027 first-round pick, and a 2029 first-round pick. You could make the argument Minnesota gave up too many assets for Gobert.

Minnesota hovered around the .500 mark all season. The Timberwolves shipped off D’Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley, and Jarred Vanderbilt to the Lakers in a three-way trade with the Utah Jazz. Minnesota received Veteran Point Guard Mike Conley, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, 2024 2nd-round pick swap, 2025 2nd-round pick, and a 2026 2nd round pick. Minnesota has a record of 29-23 against teams in the Western Conference and will be without Rudy Gobert.? Also, Karl-Anthony Towns is on the injury report. In addition, the Timberwolves will be without forward Jaden McDaniels.

Strengths

?The Timberwolves are a middle-of the road team in many statistical categories. Although they hovered around the .500 mark, Minnesota finished the season 7-3 in their last 10 games. In those 10 games, they averaged 117 points per game, over 7 steals, nearly 44 rebounds, and 29 assists. The Wolves rank 4th in Blocks per game, however, with Gobert and Towns possibly out, this will affect the team. Anthony Edwards, Kyle Anderson, and Mike Conley will have to pick up the slack for this team, who does not have many strengths right now. If the Wolves lineup were healthy, there would be plenty of depth, especially at the Center position.

Weakness

?Minnesota is a depleted team after a disastrous last game of the Season. Rudy Gobert was sent home from the team, after throwing punches at teammate Kyle Anderson. In addition, Jaden McDaniels will be out for the rest of the season after punching a wall, resulting in a broken hand. Both McDaniels and Gobert are defensive players, and without them, this team could struggle.? ?Even with two big men, the Wolves rank 23rd in the league in Rebounds (41.9), and their point differential is 0.0. Even worse, Minnesota ranks 24th in opponent three-point percentage (36.9), and this team turns the ball over many times (14.9).

Key Stats

?The Minnesota Timberwolves won the regular season series 2-1 against the Los Angeles Lakers.

?Rudy Gobert is averaging 19.3 Points and 15.3 Rebounds against the Lakers this season. With him at, the Wolves will be at a defensive disadvantage.

?Anthony Edwards averages 19.7 Points Per Game, 2 Steals, and is shooting 43.5 percent from the Three-Point against the Lakers.

?Veteran Point Guard Mike Conley is averaging 17 Points Per Game and 8 Assists against LA this season. In addition, Conley is shooting 44.8 percent from the Three-Point in his last 10 games, and 48 percent from the Field.

Los Angeles Lakers

?The Los Angeles Lakers have 17 NBA Championships and 63 NBA Playoff Appearances. The Lakers are three years removed from an NBA Championship and missed the 2021-2022 playoffs entirely. It’s Darvin Ham’s first season, in which the Lakers did not get off to a great start.? Los Angeles started the season 2-9 and lost 5 in a row in the month of November. The Lakers rank 6th in Points Per Game (117.2), 15th in Assists (25.3), 6th in Rebounds (45.7), 25th in Three-Point Shooting Percentage, and 20th in Opponent Points Per Game (116.6).

In desperation, the Lakers traded for D’Angelo Russell, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Malik Beasley. Although stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis endured injuries, Los Angeles finished 8-2 in their last 10 games. Over their last 10 games, this Lakers team is gelling nicely, shooting nearly 50 percent from the field. If Anthony Davis, LeBron James, and D’Angelo Russell suit up and are healthy, this team could make a serious run if they win tonight. Although they sit in the Play-In Tournament, this Lakers team is 18-9 since the NBA Trade Deadline.

Strengths

?The Lakers have a great amount of depth, particularly at the forward position. The addition of Rui Hachimura and Jarred Vanderbilt gives Anthony Davis and LeBron James a great amount of support. Rui Hachimura’s playing good basketball as of late, and Vanderbilt is a guy who is a defensive player the Lakers needed. If Russell suits up, he has Dennis Schroder and Austin Reaves. As far as their shooting guards go, Malik Beasley is a nice 2 guard, in addition to Lonnie Walker IV, who’s proven he can put up stats in certain situations.

If the Lakers cannot make their three-point shots, they will get to the line. They currently rank 1st in the league in Free-Throw Attempts and are top 6th in Rebounding (45.7). In particular, the Lakers are 2nd in the league in Defensive Rebounds per game (35.7). LA is in the top 10 in field goal percentage, especially if Davis and LeBron are both in the Lineup. Also, it’s important to note, although the Lakers are not the best team on the defensive end, they are very good against opponent perimeter three-pointers (34.4 percent).

Weakness

?The Lakers have been hit with injuries all season, particularly to LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and D’Angelo Russell. One of their biggest weaknesses is the ability to shoot the three-ball, where they rank 25th at 34.6 percent. Although the Lakers get to the free-throw line quite frequently, they rank towards the bottom in field goal percentage (77.5). In addition, LA ranks 20th in opponents points per game (116.6) and does not force many turnovers (12.1).

Key Stats

?LeBron James averages 23 points, 8.5 Rebounds, and 5.5 Assists against Minnesota this season. The Wolves held LeBron to 22 percent three-point and 39.5 percent field goal shooting.

?Anthony Davis averages 38 points per game, 2 blocks, 1 steal, and 11 Rebounds per game against the Wolves. In addition, Davis shot 56 percent from the field during those 2 games.

?Guard Malik Beasley is averaging 14.4 Points and is shooting 38 percent from the three against Minnesota this year.

Season Matchup

Clippers are 3-0 against the Lakers this season.

October 20th, 2022 – Clippers Win 103-97 (Lakers Home)
Before the start of the game, the Clippers were favored -5, and the Over/Under at 226.5. Clippers secured the NBA money line, covered the spread, and this game hit the UNDER at 200 points.

You can argue these two teams have home court advantage, given they share the same turf, Crypto.com Arena. This time, Kawhi Leonard came off the bench, after tearing his ACL in the playoffs. Although the Clippers had a team high 23 turnovers, they held the Lakers to 20 percent three-point shooting and outrebounded the Lakers 58-38. This was John Wall's season debut for the Clippers, and he added 14 points. Kawhi added 14 off the bench, along with 15 points for Paul George. On the Lakers side, Anthony Davis and Lebron James added 45 points combined, on 4-12 three-point shooting. In addition, Lebron had a double-double, adding 10 rebounds. Russell Westbrook scored 2 points, and shot 0-11, 0-6 from the three-point. Guard Lonnie Walker IV added 26 points.

Before the start of the game, the Clippers were favored -3, and the Over/Under at 219. Clippers secured the money line, covered the spread, and this game hit the UNDER at 215 points.

The Clippers had their second win against the Lakers, with the help from superstar Paul George. George added 29 points, 1 steal, 6 rebounds, on 10-17 field goal shooting. Although the Clippers were without star Kawhi Leonard, other players stepped up. Marcus Morris Sr., Reggie Jackson, Luke Kennard, and Ivica Zubac added double-digits in points. In addition, the Clippers added 37 points off the bench, shot 36.4 percent from the three, and 50.6 percent from the field. Unfortunately, the Lakers lost star Lebron James late in the game with a leg injury. James led the way with 30 points, 8 rebounds, on 12-22 shooting. Although the Lakers outrebounded the Clippers, they only had 22 points off the bench.

January 25th, 2023 – Clippers Win 133-115 (Lakers Home)
Before the start of the game, the Clippers were favored -4.5, and the Over/Under at 231.5. Clippers secured the money line, covered the spread, and this game hit the OVER at 248 points.

This was the first time this series the Los Angeles Clippers were able to start both Paul George and Kawhi Leonard. George and Leonard combined for 52 points and grabbed 9 rebounds each. In addition, Kawhi had 2 steals. Once again, the Clippers showed their depth, in which their bench added 53 points. The Clippers outrebounded the opposing team 47-32, shot 50 percent from the three, and shot 61 percent from the field. Although the Los Angeles Lakers only had 7 turnovers, Lebron’s 46 points, 2 steals, 7 assists, and 8 rebounds was not enough. With Anthony Davis out this game, Lakers struggled in the paint, and Russell Westbrook had an official bench role.

Regular Season Recap

Los Angeles Lakers

Overall: 41-38 Home: 21-18, Away: 20-20 Last 10: 7-3

It’s safe to say the Lakers are having a tumultuous season, especially in the beginning. It’s Darvin Hams first season, and the Lakers shot at the NBA Title was looking bleak before the trade deadline. Los Angeles decided to keep point guard Russell Westbrook after numerous trade talks to start the season. Both Anthony Davis and LeBron James have dealt with injuries this season, and the Lakers had a dreadful 0-5 start. By the time Christmas Day came, the Lakers were sitting near the bottom of the Western Conference at 13-20. In fact, the Lakers pushed over the .500 mark for the first time on March 31st, 2023. Los Angeles made some mid-season trades to better their roster, which included cutting the cord with Guard Russell Westbrook.

The Lakers Received Center Mo Bamba for Guard Patrick Beverly. Los Angeles went the next step and traded for an upgrade at the point guard position. The Lakers received Point Guard D’Angelo Russell, Guard Malik Beasley, and Forward Jarred Vanderbilt, in exchange for Russell Westbrook, Juan-Toscano Anderson, and Damian Jones, and a 2027 First-Round pick. The Lakers also received Forward Rui Hachimura from the Wizards in exchange for Guard Kendrick Nunn, and three second-round picks. The Lakers overhauled their roster and added a scoring guard in Russell. Not only do Beasley and Vanderbilt give this Lakers roster more depth, but it also gives them more power around stars Anthony Davis and LeBron James.

Although Russell has been out with a foot injury, Los Angeles is 16-7 since the trade deadline. In addition, Guards Dennis Schroder and Austin Reaves have stepped up with D’Angelo Russell out. The Lakers rank 8th in league in points-per game (117.0), and 10th in field-goal percentage (48.1). They are top 6th in Rebounds per game (45.6) and are 3rd in the league in opponent three-point percentage (34.4). The Lakers won four in a row; can they make it out of the play-in-tournament?

Los Angeles Clippers

Overall: 41-38 Home: 21-18, Away: 20-20 Last 10: 5-5

It was only a few years ago, the Clippers signed superstars Paul George, and Kawhi Leonard. Unfortunately, due to injuries to both stars, they have only played 118 games together. Leonard was coming off a torn ACL and made his regular season debut on 10/20. Even worse, Kawhi Leonard missed nearly all of October, and most of November. Paul George has been relatively healthy until recently with a knee injury. Before the All-Star game, George carried the Clippers nightly. He’s averaging 23.8 points per game, 6.1 rebounds, on 45.7 percent field goal shooting. Although he is sidelined with a right Knee Sprain, the success of this Clippers team will ultimately boil down to the health of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.

Much like the Lakers, the Clippers made quite a few moves during the NBA Trade deadline. Los Angeles shipped off Veteran Point Guard John Wall, Reggie Jackson, Luke Kennard, and received Bones Hyland, Mason Plumlee, Eric Gordon, and Russell Westbrook. Although Plumlee adds depth to their rotation, I don’t see Russell Westbrook, and Eric Gordon much of an upgrade over John Wall and Reggie Jackson. By Christmas Day, this was a 19-14 team, however, the Clippers are 10-10 since the NBA Trade Deadline.? Los Angeles ranks 23rd in points-per game (113.1), tied for 2nd in three-point percentage (38.2), and 13th in opponent points-per game (112.9). As mentioned before, the Clippers will continue to struggle with PG13 out.

Key Players

Los Angeles Lakers

LeBron James

LeBron James is currently a game time decision with a foot injury. Although James battled injuries all season, he is having an incredible season. At 38 years old, James is averaging 28.9 points per game, 8.4 rebounds, and is shooting 50 percent from the field. He’s coming off a 37-point game, and the Lakers will see if he can suit up for tonight game. The Lakers are 18-15 this season when LeBron James and Anthony Davis both play on the court. It’s important to note LeBron James hit the game winner in an overtime win against the Utah Jazz last game. In three games against the Clippers this season, LeBron averages 32 points per game and 8.6 rebounds. In addition, he’s shooting 50 percent from the field, and 29.4 percent from three.

Anthony Davis

Like LeBron James, Anthony Davis has battled through injuries, and is a game time decision tonight with a foot injury. Like LeBron, Davis is averaging 26.5 points per game, 12.4 rebounds, and is shooting 54.9 percent from the field, which is 14th in the league. He recently scored 40?points and?added 9 rebounds against the Rockets on 4/4. If he can suit up, the Lakers will rely on Davis and LeBron to avoid a 0-4 sweep against the Clippers. If Davis or LeBron can’t suit up for tonight’s game, look for Austin Reaves, Hachimura, and Vanderbilt to step up in their absence. In his two games against the Clippers, Davis is averaging 23 points per game and 8.5 rebounds. As far as shooting goes, Anthony Davis is shooting 56.3 percent from the field, and 40 percent from the three.

Los Angeles Clippers

Kawhi Leonard

The Clippers are without star Paul George, who has carried this team all season long. It’s important to note Kawhi is coming off a 40-point game, and 8 rebounds against the New Orleans Pelicans. Kawhi can defend, score, and be the difference maker for this team, as long as he has some help. In two games against the Lakers this season, he’s averaged 19.5 points per game, 8 rebounds, on 60.7 percent from the field, and 12.5 percent three-point. Look for Mason Plumlee, Norman Powell, and their bench to make up for George.

LAST 10 GAMES + GAME PREDICTION

? SPREAD: See Below.

-LA Lakers covered the spread in 5 of their last 10 games.

-LA Clippers covered the spread in 5 of their last 10 games.

-LA Lakers have a 39-39-1 record ATS this season.

-LA Clippers have a 39-40-0 record ATS this season.

-LA Clippers are 18-21-0 in HOME games ATS this season.

-LA Lakers are 19-20-1 in AWAY games ATS this season.

The Clippers covered the spread in all three games against the Lakers. If Anthony Davis and LeBron do suit up, I expect the Lakers to cover. If not, I’ll take the Clippers to cover.

MONEY LINE: See Below.

-LA Lakers won the Money Line 7 out of their last 10 games

-LA Clippers won the Money Line 5 of their last 10 games.

If Anthony Davis and Lebron suit up, this is a must win for the Lakers. They are tied with the Clippers in the 6th and 7th seed, and are currently in the play-in-tournament. If they can’t suit up, I’m choosing Clippers Money Line, with Kawhi Leonard leading the way.

OVER/UNDER- Under

-LA Lakers Avg +/- vs O/U Line: +1.37

-LA Clippers Avg +/- vs O/U Line: +1.39

-LA Lakers O/U Record: 41-38-0

-LA Clippers O/U Record: 37-42-0

-LA Lakers hit the OVER 6 times in their last 10 games

-LA Clippers hit the OVER 6 times in their last 10 games

The Under has hit two out of their three matchups this season. If Anthony Davis and LeBron James are out, I can’t see the Lakers making up those numbers. Since Paul George is out for the Clippers, I like the under here.
