We answer questions about the top storylines heading into the Spalding Hoophall Classic (Jan. 11-15). This is traditionally the biggest showcase event of the season and the last impression on a national scale for those looking to become McDonald's All-Americans. Next week's FAB 50 National Rankings will be published after MLK Monday on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

1. Can Paul VI or McEachern Pull Off The "Springfield Double"?
Not if FAB 50 No. 25 Edmond North (Edmond, Okla.) or 46 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) has anything to say about it. The No. 3 ranked Panthers are the favorites to capture the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions title on Saturday Dec. 13 in Springfield, Mo., and would actually meet No. 27 McEachern (Powder Springs, Ga.) in the semifinals on Friday with Bosco and Edmond North pairing off on the other side of the eight-team bracket. McEachern is the only club that actually had a tough opening-round game on Thursday, downing highly-regarded Vashon (St. Louis, Mo.), 73-62 behind a 29-point performance from Rutgers-bound Ace Bailey. Edmond North is still unbeaten but, St. John Bosco is a bit more battle-tested. St. John Bosco and McEachern would be a pick'em game should Bailey have a monster game and help his team upset Paul VI in the semifinals. Since McEachern will have to be firing on all cylinders to beat No. 10 Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood, Calif.) on Monday morning after a travel day on Sunday, we like Paul VI's chances a bit more to pull off the Springfield Double even though its MLK Monday game vs. No. 8 Columbus (Miami, Fla.) will be a doozy. We just feel if Paul VI win the Bass Pro TOC, the Panthers will play well Monday. For McEachern, it would be one hell of a statement to pull it off.

2. Which Game Could Impact The FAB 50 Most?
Yes, we do feel Paul VI will take down Columbus should the Panthers win the Bass Pro TOC, but don't count out the Explorers from having a big weekend. They face No. 2 Long Island Lutheran (Glen Head, N.Y.) on Saturday and returning Mr. Basketball USA Cameron Boozer is due for a big game. Sure, Columbus got blown out by No. 1 Montverde Academy earlier in the season, but the Explorers can play with LuHi. Boozer hasn't played bad at all this season, but some fans and veteran onlookers want him to dominate more in the big games. The bar is set so high for him, probably as much as any high school junior since LeBron James over 20 years ago. On a big stage, don't be surprised if he steps up and Columbus gives LuHi all it can handle. If they pull off the upset that could shake up the rankings because Columbus has four other losses and LuHi is in the thick of the FAB 50 title hunt. Should Columbus lose, it won't want to lose two in a row vs. No. 3 Paul VI. Columbus can dominate on any given day, or play with the pack so keep an eye out for its two games.

3. Is This Montverde Academy's Toughest Stretch?
The Eagles will be favored in every game the rest of the way, but this is still not its toughest stretch of games. The toughest three game stretch will come at the end of the season during the High School Basketball Nationals, April 4-6. The pressure will be on for MVA to win the FAB 50 national title and more than likely it will face one or two highly-ranked teams it has already faced after a big break. Even for a team like MVA, beating a good team a second or third time is not easy. This weekend, Montverde will face No. 23 Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.), bubble club Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and No. 9 Prolific Prep (Napa, Calif.). Oak Hill Academy has only lost to No. 2 LuHi and both the Warriors and Brewster Academy want to prove they are upper echelon EYBL Scholastic teams. The two teams' individual players have also been somewhat overlooked by other top players from its own league and will be eager for the big opportunity. As fas as Prolific Prep, The Crew has already proven it can play with and beat some of the nation's best teams. It has been banged up, however, in recent weeks and has played its last three games without its best all-around contributor, senior forward Derrion Reid. If he's not available versus MVA, that will be a big blow to Prolific Prep's chances. Others Prolific Prep players can step up, but Reid is invaluable to his team's success so far this season.

4. Who Will Make Lasting McDonald's Impressions?
Derrion Reid, bound for Alabama, was having once heck of a season before the injury. Regardless, he should be a shoo-in for the 2024 McDonald's All-American Game, which will take place April 2 in Houston. The teams will be announced on the ESPN's "NBA Today" broadcast on Tuesday, January 23. In a national senior class that is average by previous standards, there has been more buzz leading up to the announcement of the team about the borderline McDonald's selections than anytime in the past five years. There is definitely some gray area about the final 4-6 selections. That's why the Saturday game between Archbishop Wood (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Centennial (Corona, Calif.) will be so intriguing. Wood features Miami-bound shooting guard Jahlil Bethea and Arizona-bound forward Carter Bryant. Hoophall is the final big national showcase before the teams are announced and those two want to make great final impressions. Bryant is coming off a monster 39-point, 11-rebound performance in Centennial's 82-78 win over No. 19 Roosevelt (Eastvale, Calif.), so he'll go into the Wood game with some positive momentum. Another highly-regarded player who wants to show well in Springfield is undecided wing Bryson Tucker of FAB 50 No. 24 Bishop O’Connell (Arlington, Va.). His team takes on Cardinal Ritter (St. Louis, Mo.) on Sunday morning.

Here's Former Louisville commit Courtney Ramey going up against undefeated Oak Hill Academy in the semi-finals match at Bass Pro ToC. Going into the match, spectators said Webster Grove was going to lose by 20+ just because Oak Hill was the favor to win, but Webster Grove didn't let that happen at all. Ramey & Carte'Are did their best to cut the lead by 5 points and made sure nobody on their team backed down from a undefeated opponent. With the final minute winding down, Webster Grove couldn't finish some critical defensive plays and Oak Hill got the lead back up to 11 which got them the 73-62 victory.

Keldon Johnson led w/ 23 points, Will Richardson w/ 18 points, Keyontae Johnson w/12, and David McCormack w/ 11 points.

Courtney Ramey finished w/ 23 points, 6 assists & 1 block. Carte'Are w/ 18 points & 1 block.

Oak Hill will face off La Lumiere in the Championship at Bass Pro ToC.

Chino Hills (Calif.) retains its No. 1 ranking in the FAB 50 powered by www.ebooksnet.com with its second dominant win over High Point Christian (High Point, N.C.) at the Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass., over MLK weekend. No. 3 Oak Hill Academy successfully completed the "Springfield Double Dip" by capturing the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions title in Springfield, Mo., then winning a game Monday at the Hoophall. So why does Montverde Academy deserve to stay in front of the Warriors in the rankings?

By Ronnie Flores

Early this season, some national media and scouts scoffed at the playing style of Chino Hills (Calif.), the No. 1 ranked team in the FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com. A gimmick, not translatable to the next level, and wouldn't work against the best high school competition the country has to offer were the most prominent arguments made.

The Huskies started to make believers by winning the prestigious City of Palms Tournament in Ft. Myers, Fla. over the holidays, including a win over three-time defending FAB 50 champion Montverde Academy. Coach Steve Baik's club also defeated High Point Christian Academy (High Point, N.C.) in Ft. Myers and that club, led by McDonald's All-American Bam Adebayo, got its second crack at "Run GMZ" on national television on MLK Monday at the Hoophall in Springfield, Mass.

Would High Point have a chance to pull off the upset having seen the unique uptempo style Chino Hills plays? Would Chino Hills make believers of a national audience, some who had never seen the Huskies in action?

The answers were "no" and a resounding "yes", as High Point stayed with Chino Hills for a half before it was run out of the gym, as RUN GMZ rolled to a 100-75 victory. The unique ability of 6-foot-6 point guard Lonzo Ball was on full display, as he dominated the action with 15 points, 22 assists, 11 rebounds, five blocks and four steals. One of his "dimes" was a 90-foot falling-out-of-bounds full court pass to younger brother La'Melo Ball that was later named ESPN SportsCenter "Top Play of the Night".

Lonzo Ball, a UCLA recruit, was No. 3 in the latest Mr. Basketball USA Tracker and there are now few if, any, who don't feel Chino Hills' catalyst is a serious national player of the year candidate.

Oak Hill Academy's Successful MLK Weekend

Three teams did the "Springfield Double Dip" and the only school that won Monday at the Hoophall after playing in the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions in Springfield, Mo., was Oak Hill Academy of Mouth of Wilson, Va., the Bass Pro TOC champions. Coach Steve Smith's club downed Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) 49-48, on a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Creighton commit Ty-Shon Alexander off an in-bounds pass with 3.2 seconds remaining. Alexander's shot gave Oak Hill its only lead of the entire game at the buzzer.

Sierra Canyon led by five points with 3:25 remaining in the game, but could not sustain its lead. Alexander finished with 14 points and six rebounds while Braxton Key added 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Sierra Canyon had to turn around and play Montverde Academy on Monday and ran out of gas after leading 27-24 at halftime. Sophomore Simi Shittu had a big game for the Eagles in their 81-67 victory with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Ohio State commit Micah Potter added 20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

Although Oak Hill has an impressive MLK weekend, easily defeating bubble club Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) 74-55 on Monday, Montverde Academy deserves to be ranked ahead of the Warrriors for now because of the comparative results with regards to Sierra Canyon. Sierra Canyon was the second team this year to play Montverde and Oak Hill in back-to-back games that came up short in both games.

The other team to play those national powers back-to-back was No. 5 DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, Md.), which took on the third team doing the Saturday-Monday "Springfield Double Dip" -- Chaminade (St. Louis, Mo.). The Stags trailed late, but DeMatha coach Mike Jones did a masterful job of extending the game to force overtime and watched as his team came away with a 72-69 victory.

Duke-bound, Jayson Tatum, who was No. 2 in the latest Mr. Basketball USA Tracker ahead of Ball and behind Josh Jackson of Prolific Prep (Napa, Calif.), finished with 40 points and 14 rebounds in a losing effort.

Despite its two losses over the weekend, Sierra Canyon moved up one spot in this week's FAB 50 to No. 16, while Chaminade retained last week's ranking despite its fifth loss against one of the nation's toughest schedules. On Tuesday, Sierra Canyon's program also found out the CIF Southern Section ruled sophomore transfer Marvin Bagley ineligible to play for the Trailblazers this season. Bagley, last year's National Freshman of the Year at Corona del Sol (Tempe, Ariz.), is one of the most talented players in the country and his presence would have made Chino Hills' run to a mythical national title even more intriguing had he suited up for Sierra Canyon this season.

Note: The FAB 50 powered by www.ebooksnet.com is a continuation of the National Sports News Service ratings that began in 1952. Chino Hills (Calif.) retains its No. 1 ranking in the FAB 50 powered by www.ebooksnet.com with a exciting 85-83 win over bubble club Foothills Christian (El Cajon, Calif.) at the Sierra Canyon Showcase. Not much movement at the top of the FAB 50 this week and only five newcomers, but the top in-season showcase of the year, the Hoophall Classic over MLK weekend, and the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions, could shake up next week's rankings.

By Ronnie Flores

Every result counts and for the top-ranked teams in the FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com, margin of victory usually doesn't help -- or hurt -- its rankings position. Taking on other elite teams, coaches will take a win any way they can get it.

Such was the case last week for FAB 50 No. 1 Chino Hills (Calif.). The Huskies remained unbeaten by winning their only game of the week on Saturday night versus Foothills Christian (El Cajon, Calif.) at the Sierra Canyon Showcase. In the first meeting of the season between the two clubs, Chino Hills blitzed Foothills 40-13 in the first quarter, but this time the boys from San Diego County were better prepared and got a sensational performance from UCLA-bound forward T.J. Leaf to keep the game close before falling to RUN GMZ, 85-83.

Leaf, who appeared on a single ballot in the latest Mr. Basketball USA Tracker, scored on a variety of moves around the basket, finishing with 43 points on 20-of-24 shooting from the field and 21 rebounds. Foothills Christian took a 83-82 lead on Leaf's last basket with 13 seconds remaining, but Chino Hills regained the lead when national player of the year candidate Lonzo Ball was fouled three seconds later. Foothills Christian missed its last field goal attempt and Ball secured the rebound and accounted for the game's final points at the free throw line. Ball, who will join Leaf at UCLA, finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. (See raw footage of that game below.)

While margin of victory doesn't help the higher ranked team, it can often help the lower ranked/bubble team and propel it into the rankings. Considering Foothills Christian lost by one basket, we considered Leaf and company for the FAB 50 this week after it fell out in the first rankings of 2016. But after carefully reviewing the Knights' log, we decided to go with still unbeaten Wayne of Huber Heights, Ohio at No. 49 this week.

We still have Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) in front of Foothills in our California pecking order, so Mater Dei nor Foothills can be ranked in front of fellow bubble club Moeller (Cincinnati, Ohio) in our national pecking order since that team defeated Mater Dei in December. Moeller is still ranked behind Wayne, No. 31 Lima Senior (Lima, Ohio) and No. 28 Westerville South (Westerville, Ohio) in the latest Ohio Division I power poll, so Mater Dei and Foothills will need more results to go in its favor before they can jump back in the FAB 50.

The second team Mater Dei lost to -- No. 8 St. John's (Washington, D.C.) -- was involved in the other top game around the country last week. It hosted No. 5 DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, Md.) in WCAC play and the Stags came away with a 59-57 road win. The game was close throughout and decided on a 3-pointer by DeMatha's Ryan Allen with just under a minute remaining and the shot clock expiring. The closeness of the loss and St. John's 75-72 overtime win earlier in the week over No. 19 Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.) keeps the Cadets at No. 8 this week.

MLK Rankings Bonanza

The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday has evolved over the last 20 years as a great time to see some of the nation's elite clubs pitted against each other. The top showcase is the Hoophall Classic January 14-18 in Springfield, Mass. Fourteen FAB 50 ranked teams will participate with five games nationally televised on ESPN networks. The games involving ranked teams include:

No. 4 Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) vs. Athlete Institute (Ontario, Canada), 6 pm (ESPN)

Sunday, Jan. 17 (ET)
No. 4 Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) vs. No. 13 St. Benedict's (Newark, N.J.), 2:15 pm
No. 7 Patrick School (Elizabeth, N.J.) vs. No. 47 La Lumiere (LaPorte, Ind.), 5:45 pm

Monday, Jan. 18 (ET)
No. 10 St. Anthony (Jersey City, N.J.) vs. Bentonville (Bentonville, Ark.), 9 am

No. 1 Chino Hills (Chino Hills, Calif.) vs. No. 36 High Point Christian (High Point, N.C.), 5 pm (ESPNU)

Oak Hill Academy, Sierra Canyon and Chaminade will participate in the 2016 Bass Pro Tournament of Champions Jan. 14-16 in Springfield, Mo. before playing Monday at the Hoophall. The field also includes No. 45 Rainier Beach (Seattle, Wash.).

Because of all the MLK showcases around the country, the next FAB 50 won't be published until Tuesday, January 19 and will factor in MLK Monday results.
