The Bucks are currently 13-6, winning three of the last four games. It's true that all wins look the same in the standings. However, given the competition, their recent way of winning is concerning.

Milwaukee entered the 2023 season slightly behind the Boston Celtics as the NBA championship favorite. But squeezing out wins against some of the league's worst is inexcusable.

Last Friday, the Bucks were 13.5-point favorites against the then 2-12 Washington Wizards. The Bucks won by three. Two days later, the then 4-11 Portland Trail Blazers came to town as 12.5-point underdogs. The Bucks needed to pull off a 26-point comeback to win by six.

The following two games are even more alarming. The 4.5-point favored Bucks visited a Miami Heat team without its best scorers, Jimmy Butler and Tyler Herro. Milwaukee trailed for most of the fourth quarter but won by seven. Once again facing a team without its two stars, Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan, the 10.5-point favored Bucks lost by seven in OT to the Bulls.

Any team can win on a given night because basketball is a make-or-miss sport. So, the Bucks' loss to the dysfunctional 6-11 Bulls would not be as big of a deal in a vacuum. However, four-straight games playing bad or injured opponents down to the wire is concerning.

So, what's wrong with Milwaukee? The team no longer has one of the league's premier defensive units.

From the 2018 to 2022 seasons, the Bucks's defensive rating ranked 1st, 1st, 9th, 14th, and 4th in the league. In 2023, they have the 20th-best rating.

When the Bucks shocked the league by trading for superstar Damian Lillard, the team sacrificed their perimeter defense. The deal included shipping out three-time All-Defensive First-Team guard Jrue Holiday. Holiday held down opposing perimeter players for the Bucks. Now, he's in Boston.

The Bucks have zero defensive talent on the outside. Lillard is a liability in the pick and role. Offseason pickup Malik Beasley looks lost whenever on an island. And Kris Middleton is having his worst season regarding defense rating.

The Wizards are awful. But the Bucks allowed an embarrasing 70 combined points from a Jordan Poole, Tyus Jones, and Kyle Kuzma trio.

In place of injured Tyler Herro, Miami's Josh Richardson started alongside Kyle Lowry against Milwaukee. Before the match, Richardson and Lowry averaged around eight points per game on low efficiency. The Bucks gave up an efficient 41 points to that backcourt.

Last night, Chicago's Nikola Vucevic had his way in the paint, dropping 29 points. The last time the big man scored at least 20 points was against who else but the Bucks over two weeks ago.

The Bucks shouldn't hit the panic button because they're the third seed in the Eastern Conference. The franchise can thank the greatness of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Lillard for the success.

The duo has combined for at least 60 points in five of their last seven games. The Bucks lost the two contests the duo fell short.

The 60-point threshold seems like the Bucks' only way to win. Without Dame in an early November matchup in Indiana, Giannis had 54 points himself. But the Bucks lost by two, surrendering 55 total points to the Pacers starting backcourt.

Sometimes, Dame and Giannis recording more than 60 total points isn't enough. In the particular game against Washington, the Bucks needed 35-year-old Brook Lopez to turn back the clock by tying his career-high of 39 points.

Still, the Bucks are a great team. With a duo as excellent offensively as Dame and Giannis, the team should win most games. However, defensive issues are holding them back from being the near-championship favorite, as projected in the preseason.

People don't say "defense wins championships" for no reason. Only one Finals winner in the last 43 years had a defensive rating ranked 20th or below: the 2000-2001 Los Angeles Lakers. Shaq and Kobe combined for nearly 60 points a night to hide the Lakers' inabilites.

If Milwaukee doesn't make a move at the trade deadline for a perimeter defender, the Bucks' duo should prepare themselves to handle a historic workload. If not, they'll continue to find themselves in games like the recent ones.

The Milwaukee Bucks are the best team in the East, and currently have the highest odds of winning an NBA Championship. They rank 8th in Points Per Game (116.9), 10th in Three-Point Shooting (36.8), 29th in Free-Throw Percentage (74.3), 1st in Rebounds (48.6), 12th in Assist (25.8), and 21st in turnovers (13.9). On the defensive side, the Bucks rank 14th in Opponent Points Per Game (113.3), 28th in Steals (6.4), and 11th in Blocks (4.9). The First Round is held in Milwaukee, where they are 32-9 at home games this season.

Strengths

Rebounding, Giannis, Corner Threes, Perimeter Defense.

The Bucks rank 1st in the League in Rebounds this season. Giannis Antetokounmpo Leads the way with 11.8 Rebounds per game, and Bobby Portis, with 9.6 Rebounds per game. The Bucks are efficient at shooting the Three (They rank 10th in the league), and they also rank 4th in the League in Three Points Made (47.3). Jrue Holiday is averaging 43.9 percent from the Three at Home Games, and Grayson Allen is shooting 44.1 percent from the Three at Home as well. Although Jevon Carter only averaged 8 Points Per game, he averaged 42.1 percent from downtown this year. I expect him to be an x factor as well. You can’t rule out Bobby Portis, or Pat Connaughton, who averages 37 percent from the Three against Miami this season.

Milwaukee is excellent at guarding perimeter shots, thanks to guard Jrue Holiday. Whether in man or zone, this is a player who locks up everything in the league. The Bucks rank 8th in Opponent Three-Point Percentage, holding teams to 35 percent beyond the arc.

Weakness

Health of Khris Middleton, Free-Throw Percentage.

The Health of Khris Middleton has been a concern all season long. According to the Athletic, “Milwaukee Bucks star Khris Middleton underwent an MRI on his injured right knee on Thursday, which came back clean. Middleton unfortunately missed the bulk of the playoffs last year due to a MCL sprain and had wrist surgery in the Bucks offseason. Although the Bucks claim he is healthy to play, Middleton made an appearance in only 33 regular season games. In those 33 games, he averaged 15.1 Points, 4.9 Assists, and shot an underwhelming 31.5 percent from the Three, and 43.6 Percent from the Field.

The Milwaukee Bucks are not good at Free-Throws, and this is an issue that can be the difference maker in close games. The Bucks are not a team that frequently gets to the line, and their percentage ranks second to last in the league (74.3 percent). Giannis Antetokounmpo is shooting almost 10 percent less from the line compared to last year. He averaged 64.5 percent from the line, and only 56.3 Percent in two games against Miami this year. It’s important to note, although Jrue Holiday averaged 85.9 percent at the line this year, he only shot 64.3 percent from the free-throw line in four games against Miami.

Miami Heat

The Heat got a second chance, after losing to the Atlanta Hawks 116-105 in the NBA Play-In Tournament. Thanks to Jimmy Butler, the Heat beat the Bulls 102-91 to advance to the NBA First-Round Playoffs. Stat- wise, the Heat rank last in the league in Points Per Game (109.5), 25th in Assists Per Game (23.8), 27th in Rebounds Per Game (40.6), and 27th in Three Point Percentage (34.4). Although Miami struggles in most of those categories, they are 2nd in the league in Opponent Points-Per Game (109.8) and Opponent Field Goal Attempts (83.2). Miami Started their season 12-15 and won 4 out of their 5 last regular season games. Although Miami has not performed to their expectations, Head Coach Erik Spoelstra has experience in the postseason, and Jimmy Butler (Playoff Jimmy) is known for his tough playoff performance. We saw this in their last win over Chicago.

Strengths

?The Heat are one of the best defensive teams in the league. They do not allow many points per game, and they rank 3rd in the league in Free Throw Attempts (21.1). They also rank 6th in Steals Per-Game (8.0). In addition, they rank 6th in the league in Opponent Rebounds Per Game (41.8), and 2nd in the league in opponent field goal attempts (83.2). Regarding Rebounds, Miami ranks 1st in the league in Opponent Offensive Rebounds Per Game (8.9). Although they do not get to the free-throw line much, they make their shots when it matters. Miami is 2nd in the league in Free-Throw percentage (83.1). In addition, Miami handles the ball well, and does not commit as high of turnovers compared to the rest of the NBA. Although they were outrebounded by Atlanta by a large margin, they redeemed themselves against the Chicago Bulls.?

Weakness

Miami showed their lack of bench depth in their last two games. Besides Kyle Lowry adding 33 points, the rest of the Heat bench put up only 4 points. Also, Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, and Tyler Herro all played 35 minutes and above. In the win against Chicago, Lowry, Caleb Martin, and Kevin Love were the only players available from the bench, in which they only put up 20 points.

Although they are a very good defensive team, they allow opponents to shoot 36.7 percent from the three-point-point, and 48.2 percent from the field. They do not get to the free-throw line frequently and rank dead last in the league in points scored. In addition, the Heat do not shoot the ball well beyond the arc (34.4) and rank towards the bottom in Assists. Although Miami has stars in Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler, they lack a true point guard and playmaker. Tyler Herro is perfect as a 2 guard, although he's struggled as of late, and Max Strus is starting in place of Veteran Point guard Kyle Lowry. Kyle Lowry exploded for 33 points in their loss to Atlanta but had just 5 points against the Bulls. They held Chicago to 28.6 three-point shooting last game. Can they do this against Milwaukee? Can Max Strus shoot lights out again beyond the arc?

Jrue Holiday was not only an all-star this year but is one of the best two-way players in the game. Holidays is averaging 19.4 points per game, 1.2 steals, 7.3 assists, and is shooting 38 percent from the three.

?The Bucks had a season high 16 game win streak this season, and received forward Jae Crowder in the Kevin Durant trade, in return for George Hill, Serge Ibaka, Jordan Nwora, and 3 future second-round picks. Milwaukee ranks 7th in the league in points, and 1st in rebounds. Kris Middleton has struggled with injuries, only appearing in 30 games. However, Milwaukee has several role players to make up for it. Giannis “the Greek freak” continues to carry and be the face of this team. They are a top 10 team in offense and defense, that can make a splash in this year’s post season. They have a solid frontcourt, with Al Horford and Robert Williams, and both Tatum and Brown are having career numbers. Jayson Tatum ranks 6th in the NBA in points per game with 30.1, and Jaylen Brown ranks 9th in the league with 26.8 points per game. Although Boston had a shaky post-All start break, they have depth with players such as Derrick White, Malcom Brogdon, Grant Williams, Sam Houser, and Mike Muscala.
