New NC State head coach Kevin Keatts is already paying dividends at his new gig.

Fresh off of a successful stint leading UNC-Wilmington, Keats earned a commitment from Class of 2017 talent Lavar Batts on Saturday morning.

The 6-foot-2, 165-pound point guard is one of the best players in North Carolina. The four-star talent from Jay M Robinson High School (Concord, NC) had been committed to VCU, but the Rams lost Will Wade to the head gig at LSU. Keatts offered Batts a scholarship to UNC-Wilmington last year, so he obviously was a player that intrigued him.

The Wolfpack will get a player who will fit in nicely with the fast-paced offensive system and high-pressure defensive style that Keatts is bringing to Raleigh.

Batts is considered one of the quickest guards not only in the state but in this entire class, and he averaged 23.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.4 assists per contest in 2016-17. He’s arguably the top recruit in the state, and he should thrive in an system that will showcase his skills up and down the court. The up-tempo, aggressive style of play is a big reason why Batts had originally committed to VCU. The Rams recently released him from his letter of intent after Wade left for Baton Rouge.

The Wolfpack are losing star freshman guard Dennis Smith Jr. to the NBA Draft, as he recently announced that he was leaving school early for the pro game. So Batts has a chance to step in right away and be the leader of the Wolfpack offense in 2017-18.

The Battle of Concord went down last night as Wendell Moore Jr. and Cox Mill hosted VCU committ, Lavar Batts Jr. and Jay M Robinson. The game pitted the top senior in the state versus the top sophomore. It was a tale of two halfs as Cox Mill came out the gates taking the lead early on behind guards Francis Sio, Colin Noone, and Wendell Moore Jr. The Chargers were consistent all half as they went in with the lead. The momentum didn't turn until Jay M Robinson started hitting consistently from the arc, ultimately cutting the double digit deficit to single digits going into the 4th. Enter FRESHMAN, Isaac Boothe. The 5'10 sharpshooter came in and drained 3 three balls, got an and 1 finish, and nailed the go ahead 3 pointer in OT. Ultimately it was the senior Batts Jr. and company that prevailed in a sold out environment 74-71 as a last second heave from Moore Jr. came up short.

#HoopState Stars Pay Tribute at Josh Level Classic! Event Recap!

The 2016 Josh Level Classic was held at Southeast Guilford High School and hosted some of the top players in the #HoopState. The game started three years ago, an idea fueled by then-senior and Level's best friend Kanayo Obi-Rapu to honor his fallen teammate. Since then, Rapu as left for school and Kevin Graves has taken over the responsibility of organizing the annual game. The bond that North Carolina basketball players share is evident as guys from all over the state came together to play in this game. Players like Devon Dotson and Grant Williams made the trip north from Charlotte, while Boston College commit Kyran Bowman traveled all the way from the east coast to show his support! The brotherhood that is displayed by #HoopState players is second-to-none.
