Gary Payton aka The Glove aka The Greatest Trash Talker of All-Time is still at it!

While working with the NBA3x tour a couple of years ago, I got to cross off an item high on my bucket list: get into an argument with Gary Payton, who is now a coach in The BIG3 league.?Our "argument" was over the 1994 "Shaq Shutdown" at All-Star weekend and Shaq's revenge on Payton's Sonics a few days later. GP said Sonics' coach George Karl and the Western Conference players didn't organize a "shutdown" on the young superstar center but I can't tell you the last time I saw a player get triple-teamed and constantly hacked in an All-Star game. During that same conversation, we also roasted Jason Kidd's rapping skills and discussed other trash-talking legends like Kevin Garnett and Michael Jordan.

MJ and Larry Bird often get the title of "greatest trash talker of all-time" but the reason why GP is my favorite is because he lets everyone in the arena know when he is talking shit. Jordan was more of a 1-on-1 trash talker and Bird's trash-talking was often a short question (Where do you want me to hit this game-winner?) followed by a shot (the game-winner) and a couple of words (Merry Christmas MF!). Gary Payton's trash-talking is like an actor's dream monologue followed by the opportunity to do a bunch of improv takes.

"If I knew something about a person's mother, I knew something about his sister. If he had just got a drunk driving charge, I would go at the situation. It might be cruel to some people, but I would go at it. At that time, them guys are very sensitive about that, so they would go at it. They would react to it. And then after the game, the would be like, 'Ah, we're going to fight after the game.' I'd be like, 'Listen here man, you really don't want to fight me. I'm going to say sorry to you and say it was just part of the game, so don't worry about it. If you wanna fight me after I say sorry then we can deal with that later on.'" - Gary Payton on trash talking.

Back in 2016, I had the pleasure of doing an interview with basketball legend and trash-talking GOD Gary Payton. Going into it, I had one burning question I've been dying to ask him or Shawn Kemp for over two decades: Did George Karl order a "Shut Down" on Shaquille O'Neal during the 1994 NBA All-Star game aka the "Why is BJ Armstrong Starting" game.

The 94 All-Star game took place during Shaq's second season. With Michael Jordan hitting baseballs in Birmingham, Shaq was now the most popular and marketable player in the league. They won't admit it, but a lot of the league's best big men (when Big Men ruled the earth) and veterans didn't like the idea of the rapping/acting/backboard-breaking youngster taking their shine. And for 26 minutes, the Western team -- with Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson, Shawn Kemp and Karl Malone -- made Shaq's life hell during a game which is supposed to be a fun one to play in. With double and triple-teams, Shaq missed 10 of his 12 shots and went to the free throw line a game-high 11 times.

"We (officials) were talking about it halftime...The West guys weren't going to let Shaq go to the hole, which I didn't understand in an All-Star game. Why not let the guy do what he does." Said NBA ref Jake O'Donnell after the game.

One of Shaq's two made field goals was a vicious frustration dunk on Hakeem that left The Dream on his knees.

"He really didn't do a freeze or something on Shaq." Said a laughing Payton, when I asked him about George Karl ordering a shut down on Shaq. "It started as a joke. Shaq was talking big stuff and Coach was like, 'alright Gary, we going to make sure he understands this is how it is.' It wasn't really like that. Then (the Sonics) had to play them right after the All-Star game."

I interrupted, "Y'all got murdered."

"Yeah, we got killed," Payton replied. "Shaq took it personally and he got busy on that day. But that's how it goes. It was a joke at first and then Shaq took it a little personal and that was it. But that's how it was back then. If a coach didn't want to play you, you would go back at their team."

Shaq finished with 38 points (16-19 FG), 20 rebounds and 5 blocks as the Magic beat the Sonics 124-93 (on the same day Shaq's film Blue Chips came out in theaters).

I then brought up how after the payback game, a local Orlando reporter was drilling Karl about All-Star weekend. With his eyes fluttering like my wife when she's pissed at me, Karl told the reporter he thought he was being an asshole. Then when the media session was done, the assistant coach confronted the reporter and acted as if he was about to kick his ass.

Since I was a VHS head in the 90s, I actually have all of this evidence on video. Here's a recap of the game with the hilarious postgame confrontation. My apologies for the static but this was recorded on an EP setting and when you constantly go back and forth to a part on a VHS tape, it causes static. And that is why most VHS copies of Fast Times At Ridgemont High from Blockbuster Video would get jumpy before the Phoebe Cates gets out of the pool scene.

A few years later, Shaq and Karl got into a pretty amusing beef through the media.

Here are some of the best quotes by both of them after the Sonics beat the Lakers in GM1 of the 1998 Western Conference Semi-Finals and Karl commented about Shaq getting away with throwing elbows and traveling.

SHAQ

"I don't understand how a person cries before a series even started

"He looks like a woman coach sometimes. I guess he's just trying to get into certain people's heads, but it won't work with me

"Like a woman who coaches and cries all the time. He can't get in my head. He's a crybaby."

GEORGE KARL

"There's some great women coaches in this game. I'm thinking about wearing an apron tomorrow night.

"But I'm not going to play amateur psychologist. I'm sure you all (reporters) do that very well."

SHAQ's REPLY

"I ate too many Frosted Flakes. I don't remember what I said last night."

GARY PAYTON

And here's what Gary Payton had to say about it.

"I don't know what's going on with that. That's their thing."

The Lakers went on to win the series in five games; Shaq averaged 30.6 points and 9.6 rebounds in the series.

6'1 international dunk phenom Jordan Kilganon aka Mission Impossible aka The Dunker In Jeans From The All-Star Game did the impossible at the NBA House in Rio: He left Gary Payton - one of the loudest and most talkative NBA players of all-time - speechless! Keep in mind GP played with a prime Shawn Kemp and Vince Carter in the Olympics so you would think it would be near impossible to impress him with a dunk. I guess that's why Kilganon's nickname is Mission Impossible.

Unlike GP, NBA great Glen (very underrated) Rice had plenty to say about Kilganon. He not only called him an Android but said Kilganon can get up higher than Vince Carter.

Like father, Like Son! Not really. OSU's Gary Payton II actually looked more like his Dad's famous running mate Shawn Kemp on this nasty dunk over Cheick Diallo. ?He dunked it so hard that the ball went int twice!

That reminds me of a playground story I once heard about the Shawn Kemp. Supposedly he dunked so hard on a chain net that it caused sparks. The story might be BS but it's an awesome one.

Back to Payton, he finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists in the loss.

When Gary Payton was 7 years old, his father, Al "Mr. Mean" Payton setup a basketball goal by a tree and introduced the game to Gary. From that day on, "Pops" helped mold Gary into not only one of the most talented basketball players out of the extremely talented Oakland basketball scene of the 80s, but one of the toughest.

Al also worked extremely hard - as a chef at two different restaurants while working part-time at a local cannery - to make sure his son always had a few dollars in his pocket and was never enticed by the streets.

"Money changes people's minds," Al Payton says. "I made sure Gary never had to sell drugs to get any.''

But don't think Al babied Gary. He had no problem putting his son in place even if it meant punishing him like a baby.

During his sophomore year, Payton was suspended from the basketball team for half a season because of poor grades and attitude. After consecutive one-day suspensions for clowning around in class didn't elicit a desired effect, a Skyline teacher finally put in a call to Mr. Mean.

Enraged, Al Payton stormed into his son's math class and humiliated Gary into submission.

``Gary wanted to go to class and be a comedian,'' Al recalls. ``Because he was a basketball player, he didn't think he had to do anything else. I went in there and told his classmates, `I'm going to show you all that he's not a little man, he's a little baby.' And I kind of spanked him in front of everyone. That was that. Even in college, all anyone had to do was say, `I'm going to call your father,' and Gary would straighten right up.''

This wasn't the only instance when Al visited the school to teach his son a hard knock lesson.

Gary started a fight. Bad move. Mr. Mean came to school and clocked him in front of his friends, in front of the girls he wanted to impress, in front of the whole class.

"I said, 'I'm going to show you what kind of man he is,' " Al said. 'You're not a real man. I'm the man.' "

"Everybody knew who he was," said Oakland friend and former NBA player/coach Brian Shaw. "Everybody was kind of intimidated by him."

Intimidating as he was to everybody, he was also a father and coach to them and helped bodies like Jason Kidd, Antonio Davis and Greg Foster get into college and the league.

"He was always the father for everybody," Gary said. "Not just me and my brothers and my sisters, he was the father for everybody in the 'hood."

On September 2nd of 2015, the father of youth basketball in the Bay Area and creator of the "We Are Family" team passed away.

You don't even have to be a Seattle Supersonic fan or a resident of Seattle to appreciate what happened last night at Key Arena.

The night began with a WNBA game between the Seattle Storm and the Phoenix Mercury and concluded with a Seattle Pro-Am game between Team Brand Black and Team Ballislife.  The game, which featured highlights from Crawford, Isaiah Thomas, Kelly Olynyk, Terrence Jones and Martell Webster was exciting as expected, but the real excitement was seeing all the Seattle legends in the building.

For the first time since 1997, there was The Glove and The Reign Man in Key Arena exchanging high fives the way they used to after a Sportscenter worthy lob.

There was the great Lenny Wilkens from the 1979 Champion Sonics sharing a laugh with the man who inspired Jamal Crawford to wear a headband in his early days: Donald "Slick" Watts!

There was Brandon Roy, one of the best Seattle high shool players ever, sitting with his kids and Spencer Hawes of Seattle Preparatory on the sideline.

There was Payton hugging his NBA Finals teammate Detlef Schrempf

There was the crowd chanting "SUPER SONICS" the way they did when Seattle used to win the division title year after year in the 90s.

“Overall, it really was what I envisioned,” Crawford said. “But it was still so different. Running onto the KeyArena court, it gives you goosebumps. They started playing the old Sonics music and I got chills.”

Just like the chills Crawford gives fans when he unleashes a move so cold it freezes a defender.

THE JAMAL CRAWFORD RULES

Jamal, who had 26 points and 12 assists in the game, did miss the potential game-winner but unofficially his team won the game.  With 5 minutes left in the game and his Brand Black team winning by 17, Crawford reset the score to 100-100 just so the crowd could see 5 more competitive minutes of basketball.  As awesome and unusual as this sounds, I've seen Crawford do similar things in the past at the Pro-Am to make sure nobody leaves the court and arena feeling cheated.

Last summer at the Pro-Am, down by 1 with 9 seconds left in regulation, the refs called a very questionable foul on an opposing team putting Jamal at the line for 3 freebies.  The call was so bad that Isaiah Thomas took off his shoes and jersey, exited the court and went to the locker room.  Crawford then calmly stepped to the line and hit a free throw before intentionally clanking two free throws so the game would be decided by the players in OT and not the refs in regulation. Thomas ran back on the court, finished racking up his 47 points and came away with the victory. And just like last night at Key Arena, Crawford lost the game but won by sharing his love for it.

It's a love for the game and the city that's shared by many and hopefully one day, the NBA will be able to reward the city the way Jamal has, and bring basketball back to Seattle.

Oregon State great and NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton met with the media before "Gary Payton Night" at the OSU/CAL game and shared his thoughts on his son, parenting, coaching and why he has no interest in coaching at the NBA level.  When asked what he doesn't like about the current NBA game, the Glove responded by saying "Basically everything."

He mentioned the lack of defense and run and gun style of offense in a soft league as other factors.  He pointed out that he's from the era of Bird, Magic, Jordan, Pippen and Rodman when players went to the basket they got knocked on their butts and how today's game prevents players from being able to properly challenge players one-on-one on D.

The premier point guard also said he's only impressed with three current point guards in the NBA - Chris Paul, Rajon Rondo and Tony Parker (who he struggled to remember).

The topic then moved on to the amount of young 19 year olds entering the league that aren't ready to play and how they, and the NCAA, would benefit from these kids spending a few years in college.

Big Brother Gary Payton was reunited with Little Brother Kobe for this Fox Sports Live interview where GP asks Kobe about his return, his new controversial contract, new Nike shoes and the future of the Lakers.

An amusing moment comes at the 4:30 mark when Gary Payton asks if LA belongs to the Lakers or the Clippers and Kobe pulls off a Shaq impersonation by saying "C'mon stop it, stop it."  He then says one day the city might become the Clippers but he will be dead and gone by then.

Kobe also get to "toot his horn" in a rapid fire true or false segment where Kobe picks himself as the best scorer, best all-around and smartest player in the league.

Although GP considers Kobe his "little brother," fans of the 90s Lakers will always consider Eddie Jones to be Kobe's "big brother."
