The Greensboro Day Bengals knew they would have to do something different Saturday if they were going to beat the Wesleyan Trojans in the NCISAA Class 3-A boys basketball championship game.
Wesleyan had won the PACIS rivals’ regular-season meetings 66-52 and 57-41 and was the top seed against a Greensboro Day team that dropped four straight games in late January and early February after losing senior Will Dillard to a blood clot in his right lung. But with a state title on the line at Forsyth Country Day School, the Bengals took control early and came away with a 67-53 victory and their second consecutive championship.
“We came out in attack mode this game,” said senior forward Alex Michael. “The first two games we were a little timid, a little nervous maybe, and let them dictate what we did. This time we came out and attacked them and forced them to play our style of basketball, and we got the lead and never looked back.”
Greensboro Day (27-7) led 19-11 after one quarter and 33-20 at halftime.
“We knew they were going to try to punch us in the mouth,” said Bengals senior swingman John Newman, “so we had to beat them to the punch and set the tone. We knew that if we were with them in the fourth quarter we’d be able to put it on ice.”
It started with defense, as it usually does, for the Bengals.
“The difference was that defensively we were more aggressive in the lane area, double-teaming Hoard,” coach Freddy Johnson said, referring to Wesleyan forward Jaylen Hoard. “We also backed up to the 3-point area and decided not to pick them up full-court because the two Langleys (twins Keyshaun and Kobe) blew right by us the first two games.”
Keyshaun Langley scored 12 points and Kobe added four Saturday, but most of those came in the fourth quarter when a Trojans comeback ran out of steam after Wesleyan closed to 57-50 with 1:33 to play.
Aaron Wiggins led Wesleyan (27-6) with 18 points and Shawn Walker added 17, but Hoard did not score. Both coaches said Greensboro Day big man Mike Fowler set the tone early this time by being aggressive against the 6-foot-8 Wake Forest signee.
“This is crazy,” added Newman, a Clemson signee who scored 24 points and was named Most Valuable Player. “I never imagined being at this point in my life and our class making history. It’s so special.”
Greensboro Day 19 14 16 18 — 67
Wesleyan 11 9 15 18 — 53
Greensboro Day (27-7) — John Newman 24, Carson McCorkle 15, Tripp Greene 10, Noah Dunn 7 Mike Fowler 7, Nick Evtimov 2, Austin Inge 2.
Wesleyan (27-6) — Aaron Wiggins 18, Shawn Walker 17, Keyshaun Langley 12, Kobe Langley 4, Khyrie Thompson 2.

]]>January 7th - Tonight gave us an early preview between two favorites for the NCISAA 3A State Championship. Coming into tonight's contest, no. 21 High Point Christian (13-2) was riding a wave of confidence. After finishing in 3rd place at the City of Palms, the Cougars were able to take home the HSOT National Bracket Championship defeating Arlington Country Day (FL). No. 41 Greensboro Day didn't do bad themselves as they took home the HAECO Invitational Title defeating Northwest Guilford.
The atmosphere was amazing as a fully-packed Alumni Gym gave this game a small college feel as stands were filled to capacity. If the first play from HPCA was any indication; we'd be in for a long night. After Jalen Seegars took a fade away jump shot, UK commit Bam Adebayo came flying through the air for a thunderous 1-hand putback slam. This was nothing new for Greensboro Day as they stayed true to their game plan. It was juniors John Newman III and Travon Mayo who led the way for the Bengals in first quarter as Newman went 4-4 from the field. After one, it was 17-9 GDS.
In the second quarter, it was Adebayo, Graves, and Bogan who gave the Cougars life again. Adebayo was his usual self, rebounding, pushing the break, and finishing above the rim. An and-1 three from Reece Bogan followed by a late three from Boston College commit Ty Graves had the Cougars trailing 30-26 going into the half.
The second half gave us a back and forth battle as GDS answered every HPCA bucket. Throughout the third, the Cougars couldn't manage to dig into the Bengals constand 6-10 point lead. Junior JP Moorman was able to assert himself a bit as he nailed a step back jumper and converted on multiple drives to the basket. The third quarter ends with GDS leading 49-42 over HPCA.
Adebayo once again went to work in the fourth as he muscled his way through double teams for assists and and-1 buckets. On the opposing end, key baskets by juniors John Newman, Will Dillard, and Jordan Perkins helped keep the Bengals on top. With 1:50 left in the game, GDS is up 58-57. A Cougar bucket gives them the 59-58 lead with 1 minute left in regulation. The Bengals come down with the ball only to throw it away back to the Cougars. In dramatic fashion, the Cougars manage to turn the ball back over leading to a huge and-1 basket by John Newman III. With roughly 30 seconds left in the game, a missed shot by senior Ty Graves gave the Bengals of Greensboro Day the 60-59 win. This was one of the more memorable games of the season so far, and a great preview of the NCISAA 3A Conference!
Players of the Game
