On the final day of games at Hoophall West in Scottsdale, Ariz., California's two top ranked teams in the FAB 50 took on Arizona's two best and came away with two key victories. Two other highly California clubs go down to non-AIA clubs on Saturday afternoon.?

Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood, Calif.) faced Perry (Gilbert, Ariz.) in the nightcap of the three-day Hoophall West and was attempting to keep its unbeaten record intact and give California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) teams their second consecutive win over highly-regarded Arizona clubs. The Wolverines, the defending CIF open division state champs, did just that in upping their record to 7-0 with a 61-53 victory over a team that came into the event ranked No. 29 in the FAB 50 National Team Rankings as the defending Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) open division champs.

Perry, which defeated Sunnyslope (Phoenix, Ariz.) in the first ever AIA open title game last March, got off to a hot start. It took a quick 17-4 lead, then Harvard-Westlake proceeded to go on a 25-10 run to close the first half. The Wolverines eventually took the lead at 29-27 on a conventional 3-point play by Harvard-bound Robert Hinton with 21.9 seconds remaining in the first half. The run eventually got up to 31-10 until Perry star junior forward Koa Peat made two free throws with 6:15 to go and Harvard-Westlake leading 35-29.

Harvard-Westlake led 48-37 after three periods of play. Perry (4-2) cut its deficit down to three points (54-51) with 1:47 to go on a nifty dime from Peat to senior Jonas Cedarlind for a score, but Nikolas Khamenia sealed the win with a clutch 3-pointer to make it 59-51 with 40 seconds remaining in the game.

USC-bound guard Trent Perry finished with 24 points, nine rebounds and four assists for Harvard-Westlake, while Hinton finished with 19 points and Khamenia adding nine points. All of Khamenia's points came in the fourth period.

Peat finished with 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four blocks for Perry, who will look to rebound from losses to No. 14 Archbishop Stepinac (White Plains, N.Y.) and the Wolverines when it plays Sunnyslope on December 8 and St. Mary's (Phoenix, Ariz.) on December 11.

Harvard-Westlake will do battle with state-ranked clubs St. Pius-St. Matthias (Downey, Calif.). and Campbell Hall (North Hollywood, Calif.) before it heads to the Les Schwab Invitational in Oregon after Christmas. There the Wolverines could potentially meet Perry once again with FAB 50 No. 7 Columbus (Miami, Fla.) another potential roadblock to a tourney title and an unbeaten record heading into 2024.?

In the first of two big time California vs. Arizona matchups, St. John Bosco, currently ranked No. 20 in the FAB 50, upped its record to 3-0 on the young season with a 75-68 workmanlike victory over FAB 50 bubble club Sunnyslope. The Braves relaxed at times, but did enough to down a team that recorded a win over Corona (Centennial, Calif.) in November, but lost to fellow Arizona club Millennium (Phoenix, Ariz.) on Thursday at the event.

St. John Bosco led 26-11, but eventually lost the lead 43-42 with 4:40 remaining on a 3-pointer by sophomore forward Christian Simmons. Sunnyslope and Bosco went back and forth and the Vikings last lead came at 54-53 right under seven minutes remaining in the game. Loyola-Chicago commit Jack Turner of St. John Bosco quickly answered with a bucket and the Vikings only scored five more points afterwards until the final 30 seconds of the game when they scored 10 points when the contest was no longer in doubt.

Junior forward Kade Bonam led St. John Bosco with 23 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Fellow junior Elzie Harrington, one of nations's best 2025 guards, added 16 points, five rebounds and eight assists. Top-notch sophomore (2026) guard Brandon McCoy Jr. chipped in 15 points and six rebounds for a St. John Bosco club that is currently No. 2 in California among CIF schools behind Harvard-Westlake. The two schools won't be meeting during the 2023-24 regular season, but ultimately could in the CIF Southern Section open playoffs in February.

California did lose two games earlier on Sunday, but it wasn't to Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) clubs.

Desert Mountain, which defeated Notre Dame Prep (Scottsdale, Ariz.) on Thursday at Hoophall West, rebounded for a buzzer-beating loss to Pinnacle (Scottsdale, Ariz.) on Friday night to record a 81-74 overtime win over FAB 50 No. 38 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.). With 16.9 seconds to go, Desert Mountain sophomore guard Kaden House converted a driving conventional 3-point play (where he missed the free throw) to give Desert Mountain a 69-67 lead. On the ensuing possession, however, Sierra Canyon senior forward Noah Williams (23 points) tied the game on a driving lay-up with 8.9 seconds remaining.

In overtime, Sierra Canyon racked up the personal fouls far from the goal with its aggressive trapping and was outscored, 12-5. ?Williams and junior forward Bryce Cofield (18 points) both fouled out in overtime. Justin Pippen, one of the West Region's best unsigned point guards, also had 23 points.

House continued to show why he's one of the best sophomore point guards in the nation with his driving attacks and never-say-die attitude, finishing with 27 points, four rebounds and 14 assists. His brother Kalek House, also a sophomore, added 21 points for the Wolves among four double-digit scorers.

California took another setback earlier Saturday afternoon when Centennial (Corona, Calif.), the three-time defending CIF Southern Section open champions, lost its third game of the season to FAB 50 No. 14 Archbishop Stepinac (White Plains, N.Y.), 76-66, in a well played game. The Huskies had a 39-35 halftime lead and led 47-40 and it looked like the visitors from New York were in major trouble when Kentucky-bound Boogie Fland landed awkwardly on a lay-up he made. Amazingly, Stepinac made a 10-0 run with its star guard on the bench and took a 50-49 lead after three periods.

Six-foot-7 2024 forward Braylan Ritvo, a terrific glue player who can knock down the outside shot, kept Stepinac in the game in the first half when Centennial's Isaiah "Slim" Rodgers went bonkers. The talented 6-foot-3 sophomore point guard had 20 points in the first 16 minutes and finished with 31 points, including 7-of-9 3-pointers.

Ritvo, who will see his recruitment pick up as his senior season progresses, helped Stepinac go to 2-0 on its young season by scoring 30 points, including 8-of-10 3-point shots. Fland re-entered the game with 20 seconds left in the third period and hit some timely shots and free throws in the final stanza to finish with 27 points.

The post NEW FAB 50: State Champions Crowned! appeared first on www.ebooksnet.com.

]]>
This was the week in the playoffs that caused major change in the new FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com. Tough foes in the deep playoff rounds and championship games caused some teams top drop after being upset or finding out perhaps they weren't as highly-touted as last week's ranking indicated. There's a whopping seven newcomers this week and all were recently crowned state champs. Some state champs will play on and what teams those are is becoming clearer.

A majority of the states around the country are now done for the 2022-23 season, as a plethora of state champions were crowned over the past week. The results of those games created much change in this week's FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com.

Perhaps the most anticipated state title game was the University Intersholastic League's (UIL) Class 6A title game between then No. 8 Lake Highlands (Dallas, Texas) and No. 13 Beaumont United (Beaumont, Texas) Saturday evening at the Alamodome in San Antonio. It was a close affair that Lake Highlands took control of with a 13-1 run to close the third period with the Wildcats holding a 42-37 lead.

Beaumont United, which was looking to capture a third consecutive UIL state crown after winning in Class 5A in 2022 and 2021, put together a quick 5-0 run to cut its deficit to 44-42 with five minutes remaining in the game. The Timberwolves, however, did not score a field goal in the final 4:54 of the contest, as Lake Highlands went on to record a 55-44 victory to capture its first UIL state crown since 1968.

Tre Johnson, a talented 6-foot-5 junior who many respected analysts feel is the top 2024 prospect in the country, finished with 29 points on 8-of-17 shooting and added eight rebounds for Lake Highlands. Johnson made tough field goal attempts look easy and certainly has the look of a two-time All-American. Another key was the defensive presence of 6-foot-10 Yale bound Samson Aletan. His play in the pivot down the stretch was key in limiting Beaumont United's ability to make a goal, as he finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and set a Class 6A state title game record with seven blocked shots.

Beaumont United, which was led by All-American candidate Wesley Yates III with 21 points, did not drop in the updated rankings. The Timberwolves owns wins over No. 14 Sidwell Friends (Washington, D.C.), No. 44 Jonesboro (Jonesboro, Ark.) and No. 47 Corner Canyon (Draper, Utah) with its first loss coming in the second game of the season.

Lake Highlands is able to move up one spot this week to No. 7 after the previous team in that spot, Centennial (Corona, Calif.), saw its two-year reign as California's best team end with a 80-61 home loss to Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood, Calif.) in the CIF SoCal open final on Tuesday. The margin of defeat in that game and the fact it was at home drops the Huskies 14 spots to No. 21 this week. They are now behind New Jersey Non-Public B state champ Roselle Catholic (Roselle, N.J.), a team that beat the Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) club Centennial lost to.

Harvard-Westlake is one of the big risers this week after capturing the CIF open crown at the Golden One Center in Sacramento with a 76-65 victory over St. Joseph (Santa Maria, Calif.), which became the first ever team from Santa Barbara County to appear in a CIF major division title game. Harvard Westlake was able to avenge its section pool play loss to No. 32 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) in the SoCal open semifinals, 69-64. Harvard-Westlake's team, featuring senior forward Brady Dunlap and junior point guard Trent Perry, was one of the most balanced and well-rounded on both ends of the floor that we've been in CIF play over the past 40 years and likely will end up as the second highest-rated team ever in program history.?In 1996-97, a Harvard-Westlake club led by the Collins twins (future NBA players Jason and Jarron) won the CIF D3 state title (there was no open division then) and finished No. 5 in the National Prep Poll (FAB 50 precursor) after losing one game to a Tracy McGrady-led Mt. Zion club from North Carolina by four points in the Las Vegas Holiday Invitational Tournament title game.

Speaking of St. John Bosco, West Linn (Ore.) must remain in front of the Braves after an upset loss to Tualatin (Ore.) in the Oregon Schools Activities Association (OSAA) Class 6A title game at the Chiles Center becasue of a head-to-head result. The Timberwolves, who had three prior losses to their Three Rivers League opponent earlier in the season, came out on top of a 60-47 game behind a stellar defensive performance and 20 points from senior point guard Josiah Lake. Tualatin held West Linn to one field goal in the first quarter and out-rebounded the top seed, 37-23.

Junior forward Jaden Steppe had 19 points and 10 rebounds, while junior pivot Jayden Fortier added nine points and 15 rebounds for a club that breaks into the FAB 50 at No. 30, one spot ahead of West Linn and two spots ahead of St. John Bosco. Veteran FAB 50 observers might feel it's too high a jump for the Timberwolves, but upon further inspection Tualatin deserves plenty of rankings credit. Three of its losses were to West Linn and in the quarterfinals of the Lew Schwab Invitational in December, Tualatin could have beat the Lions in regulation, but missed some free throws and lost in overtime. Tualatin's core has played together since middle school and this is actually its second consecutive Class 6A state crown.

At the Les Schwab, West Linn defeated FAB 50 No. 4 Duncanville (Texas), so Tualatin got the big win it needed at the right time over a team that had built a terrific resume. Duncanville will finish as the highest ranked UIL club after beating Class 6A champ Lake Highlands, 53-52, in November. Duncanville, the 2022 FAB 50 National Champions, opted not to participate in this year's UIL playoffs after it was stripped of last year's state crown for violation of UIL bylaws.

The team right in front of Duncanville in the FAB 50, No. 3 John Marshall (Richmond, Va.), closed out its season in dominant fashion and is in the running for the FAB 50 national title. Its Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 2A state title game win over Radford (Va.) was more like a coronation than a contest. In the 91-34 domination, the Justices got out to a 16-0 lead and were up 51-13 at halftime. If there was ever a state association that needed an open division or Tournament of Champions, it's the VSHL.

John Marshall, which owns wins over No. 6 Columbus (Miami, Fla.) and No. 33 Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.), had an average playoff game winning margin of a whopping 65.5 points in six contests. In order for the Justices to have a shot at the FAB 50 crown, it will need some help from some of the six teams ranked behind No. 1 Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) and No. 2 Link Academy (Branson, Mo.) who are part of the eight-team 2023 GEICO Nationals field. CLICK HERE for the announcement of the participating teams in the event set for March 30 through April 1.

Teams still alive in their respective state playoffs or those projected to participate in the second annual?State Champions Invitational set for April 6-8 in the DMV region do not have an asterisk by their won-loss record.

Note:?The FAB 50 powered by www.ebooksnet.com is a continuation of the National Sports News Service ratings that began in 1952. These were the first national high school rankings and the late Art Johlfs of Minnesota compiled them. They were compiled for many years by the late Barry Sollenberger of Phoenix, who merged them into the FAB 50 23 years ago.

Three new teams crack the latest edition of the FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com, but the big news is previous No. 13 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) going down in CIF Southern Section open pool play. Read below to see where Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood, Calif.) landed as it gets ready to take on No. 5 Centennial (Corona, Calif.) in the CIFSS open championship. Sierra Canyon is not done yet, as only one team that fell from the rankings is done for the season. In the next couple of weeks, more ranked teams will wrap up, although the new State Champions Invitational will extend the season for four state champions.

The storylines behind this week's FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com is not whom lost, but whom can bounce back after a loss and avoid getting upset at the wrong time. Only one ranked team saw its season come to an end. That was previous No. 45 Durango (Las Vegas) falling to No. 35 Liberty (Henderson, Nev.), 73-68, in the Nevada Interscholastic Athletic Association (NIAA) Class 5A Southern Semifinals. Durango was ranked ahead of Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Class AAAAAAA No. 1 Pebblebrook (Mableton, Ga.) in the rankings after handing the Falcons one of their two losses at the Tarkanian Classic in December. The Falcons have now done enough to be ranked ahead of Durango, which remains on the bubble because of its overall resume.

As for Liberty, the Patriots fell to No. 11 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) in the Class 5A Southern final, 77-61. It was their third loss of the season to the Gaels, who upped their winning streak to 42 games with the win. After the NIAA did not have a 2020-21 season, Bishop Gorman will look to win its tenth consecutive state crown this weekend at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno. Should Bishop Gorman defeat Spanish Springs (Sparks, Nev.) in Friday's state semifinals and win the state title the following evening, it would break the reported national state title winning streak record of nine held by now defunct and four-time FAB 50 champion St. Anthony (Jersey City, N.J.) between 1983-1991.

By defeating Durango, Liberty assured itself a spot in the Class 5A semifinals, where it will take on Douglas (Minden, Nev.). What could make getting a fourth crack at Bishop Gorman a bit more difficult is the absence of St. Mary's-bound man Joshua Jefferson. After he fouled out in the closing seconds of the Southern championship, Gorman's Darrion Williams was holding the ball in front of the Liberty bench to run out of the clock when Jefferson reached over from the bench to grab the ball. Because he was not on the court, he was injected and that means he will not be able to play in the state semifinals.

With last week's announcement of the new State Champions Invitational, Gorman's season likely won't be done should it win the NIAA Class 5A title. Four National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) sanctioned state champs from among Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, Utah, Washington, and Washington, D.C., will be chosen to play in the inaugural event, April 7-9, in Florida. Should Gorman win a state title, it will be one of the most attractive teams to event organizers, as would No. 10 Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), provided that team captures the Florida High School Association (FHSA) Class 4A state crown.

Similar to Liberty, California state power Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) lost a playoff game, but is not done yet, after falling to unranked Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood, Calif.), 63-60, in last Friday's CIF Southern Section open pool play game. Both teams entered the highly-anticipated game 2-0 in pool play with the winner advancing to face No. 5 Centennial (Corona, Calif.) in Friday's CIFSS open title game. Sierra Canyon was looking to advance to its fifth consecutive section open title game, but the Wolverines had other ideas and executed to near perfection to advance to their first section open championship game.

Junior forward Brady Dunlap scored 10 of his 17 points in the final period and sophomore Trent Perry nailed two free throws in the final 10 seconds to seal the win, as a last-second 3-point attempt by the Trailblazers' Dylan Metoyer was off. Penn-bound Cam Thrower scored a team-high 18 points for Harvard-Westlake, while UCLA-bound Amari Bailey led Sierra Canyon with 21 points.

From a rankings standpoint, Harvard-Westlake's 68-43 victory in its second pool play game over Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) was just as important because it avenged the Wolverines' only in-state loss. With the other loss coming against bubble club Mountain Pointe (Phoenix, Ariz.), Harvard-Westlake jumps into the FAB 50 at No. 19. The Wolverines must be in front of Sierra Canyon, a club that can't drop too far because of its victory over No. 17 Glenbard West (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and a split with No. 20 Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.).

Regardless of the Centennial-Harvard-Westlake championship game outcome, those two teams will be the top two seeds in the upcoming SoCal open regional playoffs. Sierra Canyon will have an opportunity to bounce back and could still win the CIF state open crown on March 12 at the Golden One Center in Sacramento, but it will have to win a couple fo road games to advance in the SoCal open regional. The best bet to represent the Northern region in the first CIF State Championships since the 2018-19 season is No. 43 Campolindo (Moraga, Calif.). The senior-oriented Cougars have only lost to University Interscholastic League (UIL) Class 4A front-runner and No. 36 Oak Cliff Faith Family (Dallas, Texas). That club has only lost games to teams FAB 50 ranked at some point, including Gorman and Liberty.

While Liberty and Sierra Canyon are still alive, we're getting to the point in the season when some teams will be in win-or-go-home brackets in their respective state tournaments.

Will the rankings hold up?

As we see most weeks, it's not easy to knock off a FAB 50 ranked club, as the majority of those teams and the bubble clubs win each and every week. It really is a special honor for any program to be ranked in any credible poll.

Note: The FAB 50 powered by www.ebooksnet.com is a continuation of the National Sports News Service ratings that began in 1952. These were the first national high school rankings and the late Art Johlfs of Minnesota compiled them. They were compiled for many years by the late Barry Sollenberger of Phoenix, who merged them into the FAB 50 22 years ago.
