]]>6'7 power forward EJ Liddell from Belleville, IL (Near St Louis) not only won Illinois Mr Basketball as a junior. He also led his Belleville West HS to a 4A (highest division) state championship.
The uncommitted senior recently cut his list of possible colleges to 5: Ohio State, Kansas State, Wisconsin, Missouri and Illinois.
Considered one of the top 50 players in his class nationally, we caught Liddell playing with his Belleville West squad at the historic Morris Shootout, one of Illinois best, oldest summer basketball tournaments.
As the video will show, Liddell dominated in every phase of the game: scoring, rebounding, blocking, dunking over opponents. He looked like a man among boys!

]]>Scoring over 1700 career points in high school so far, Goodwin led the Belleville Althoff Crusaders (32-2) to its first Boys Basketball state title after finishing second in 2015. Althoff checks in at #26 in the latest BALLISLIFE FAB 50. Look for them to move up!
Goodwin has dominated varsity basketball since he stepped on the court as a freshman. As a sophomore, he led team in scoring (20ppg), rebounding (8.4) and second in assists (2.5). As a junior, he did it again, averaging a team high 19ppg with a team high 293 rebounds and 99 assists.
Goodwin is as competitive and physical as any high school player. He guards the opponent's best player, even if it means a 7 inch size disadvantage as it did in Peoria vs St Joes' 6'11 Nick Rakocevic.
Check out these highlights from the IHSA State semis and finals from Carver Arena in Peoria, IL. You'll see Goodwin's high basketball IQ and court vision on display in this mixtape, but his biggest strength is his rebounding (toughness) especially for his size and his position (guard). He's also a leader for his team.
In the state semis and finals in Peoria (2 wins), Goodwin put up 44 points, 25 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals.
Goodwin scored 25 points, grabbing 15 rebounds in the 3A title game rematch from 2015 vs St Joes.
Then Goodwin and the Crusaders dominated Lincoln-Way West 62-37 to win the Class 3A state title, not allowing a single field goal for a seven-minute stretch.
In the final, Goodwin finished with 19 points (8-14), 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals before exiting.
It was a historic season for the St Louis area Althoff with their only losses coming to Highland (when most of team still returning from playing football) and to Chaminade which features Goodwin St Louis Eagles AAU teammate Duke-bound Jayson Tatum, one of the top players in the country.
As for recruiting, high major coaches are taking notice of Goodwin. Jordan currently holds offers from Iowa (Football and Basketball), Purdue, Indiana, Creighton, Illinois, Missouri, SLU, Virginia Tech, Illinois State, Northwestern and more. That list will continue to grow!

]]>Considered one of the top 20 players in the Class of 2018, Vanover was just recently named to the 2015-16 USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team. He was a member of the 2015 USA Basketball U16 National Team that captured the gold medal with a perfect 5-0 record at the 2015 FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Bahia Blanca, Argentina.
Ballislife's cameras caught Vanover's first games of his 10th grade high school season when Arkansas Baptist High School (Ark.) was playing in the 10th Annual Coventry Health Tournament of Champions in Washington, IL against strong regional and national competition.
Named to the All-tournament team, Vanover averaged over 20 PPG.
Last season as a freshman in 2014-15, he aided his team to a 25-8 record, the 2015 district and regional titles and the Arkansas 4A tournament semifinals.
Connor averaged 14.8 ppg, 9.4 rpg and 3.2 bpg, while starting all 33 games.
If one Vanover on a team isn't enough, Connor has twin brothers who are 7-foot and 7-foot-1. 7ft brother Brandon is a senior and Connor's teammate at Baptist.
Following his 9th grade season, Connor picked up high major offers from Ole Miss, Alabama and Arkansas. Expect that list to grow!
After seeing Connor Vanover open his season, we expect to see Arkansas Baptist contending for an Arkansas state title.

]]>Zack Norvell, Jr. had as big a freshman season at Chicago basketball powerhouse Simeon Career Academy as anyone could imagine. Last season (as an 8th grader) Norvell led Beasley Elementary to a 8th Grade City Championship (watch Ballislife video). This season, Norvell led Simeon's Sophomore squad to an impressive undefeated season, culminating in the Chicago City Title. Once the Sophomore season ended, Norvell re-joined the Varsity squad, coming off the bench to help the Simeon Wolverines win their fourth consecutive Illinois 4A State Championship. In the Argo sectional playoff game, Norvell scored 7 points to help eliminate Dusable HS, ending Dusable's Cinderella season. What made it personal is Dusable is coached by Zach's dad, Zack Norvell, Sr.!
The 6'4 Class of 2016 Guard is already catching the attention of high-major coaches with his long-range shooting, competitive nature, court vision and scoring abilities.

Playing a national schedule for the first time in school history and winning Chicago’s Red Central title, the Curie Condors finished 19-8. They ultimately fell to Chicago city champs Whitney Young in a heated State Sectional game 62-58 with Alexander outscoring 6’11 Jahlil Okafor 14-13.
After watching the highlights, it should come as little surprise Cliff Alexander’s top 10 college choices include Kansas, Michigan State, Kentucky, Louisville, Illinois, DePaul, Indiana, Memphis, Baylor and Arizona.

]]>Ultra-athletic Kendrick Nunn concluded his career at Chicago Simeon Career Academy (28-3 overall) by winning his fourth consecutive Illinois Class 4A State Title (alongside Jabari Parker).
Nunn was second in team scoring with 14.8 points per game and is a consensus top 75 talent nationally. Nunn's trademarks are knocking down shots and being a big-time finisher at the rim.
Next season, Kendrick Nunn will play for Coach John Groce at the University of Illinois in the Big Ten alongside Simeon teammate, fellow guard Jaylon Tate.

]]>Fans of Chicago Public League basketball appreciate Garrett's refreshing old school game, while LEADING his otherwise frenetic (and talented) team in every sense of the word. He might not be as flashy as some of the other players featured on Ballislife, but 6’4 Garrett can play. He can shoot, score, pass, and defend. He finished his high school career as Morgan Park’s career scoring leader and assists leader.
Many hoops fans don’t know that Garrett plays with a rare health condition known as sickle cell trait. In 2012, Sports Illustrated wrote about Garrett’s experience dealing with his health as well as the interesting story of his grandfather Bill Garrett who has been credited with breaking the Big Ten’s color barrier when he played for Indiana in the 1940s.
Billy Garrett, Jr. will stay in Chicago to play college ball at DePaul (Chicago, IL) where his dad is an assistant coach.

]]>In perhaps the biggest game in Chicago Curie High School history, they faced the nation's top player in the Class of 2014, 6'11 Jahlil Okafor and his loaded #1 Whitney Young HS team with their seasons on the line. But 6'9 Cliff Alexander and his Curie Condor teammates were ready for battle.
Jahlil Okafor and Cliff Alexander took turns thrilling the crowd at Argo HS (Summit, IL), but it was Okafor who won as #1 Whitney Young (27-3) came-from-behind 62-58 vs #9 Curie (19-8) in the Class 4A sectional semifinal.
Okafor finished with 13 points, three blocks and three rebounds.
Alexander scored 14, three blocks, and grabbed eight rebounds.
While the bigs battled, elite (top 60) juniors L.J. Peak (23 points) and Paul White (11 points) helped supply the offensive support Young needed.

]]>Morgan Park's Division-1 bound senior guards Billy Garrett (Depaul) and Kyle Davis (Dayton) as well as rising-star 6'7 junior Josh Cunningham have wreaked havoc on their competition all season. If they were able to penetrate in this game, they weren't unable to score in the bunches they're used to. Davis led Morgan Park (26-3) with 14pts and 6 rebounds. Garrett finished with 12 points. Cunningham had 9 points (including 2 nice dunks), 5 rebounds.
Whitney Young Junior Miles Reynolds’ three-pointer with 53 seconds to play was the biggest shot of the game. It tied the score at 51 (after Young trailed by 7 at the half), and sent the game to overtime (and set off his dad and Chicago's Mayor Rahm Emanuel in the stands). Reynolds finished with 13 points (3-threes).
Young transfer from South Carolina, Junior LJ Peak contributed 15 points, 5 rebounds including some clutch hoops in OT.
In the end, it was all about Chicago's biggest fella, Jahlil Okafor. In the biggest game of his high school career, he came up biggest and he was too much for Morgan Park to overcome on this night.

The physical game was close throughout as Orr Academy led 28-27 at halftime. The game was tied 37-37 after 3 quarters.
McDowell, who also stars on the football field, finished with 11 points, 4 assists. Top junior Jahlil Okafor led all scorers with 22 points.

]]>Averaging 38.1 PPG (#1 in nation on maxpreps.com), Ballislife headed to Little Village HS to see the electrifying point guard for the second time and he put up a career high 63 points in a 96-58 win!
For those wondering about the strength of Little Village’s program, they have D1 recruits and they recently defeated teams who have defeated Powerhouse this season. This was no mismatch (on paper).
Cole made 8-11 3-pointers, 13-16 free throws and finished with 10 assists. His previous high scoring total was 49 points.
According to the Chicago Sun Times and IHSA.org, it was the first time since 1991 (Chicago Harvard's Walter Simmons, 75 points) that at least 63 points have been recorded.
Earlier this season, wersus nationally-ranked Whitney Young HS, Cole was the sole focus of the Dolphins defense. He got off to a slow start, scoring just two points in the first quarter. That’s all Power House scored in the quarter too.
Then Cole put up seven in the second quarter, nine in the third and six in the fourth to finish with 24 points and four assists.
An academic qualifier, Chicago State has offered and Eastern Illinois, Northern Illinois, Illinois State, Arkansas-Little Rock, Western Michigan and Wyoming have all shown interest but expect the list to grow!

]]>For Morgan Park: DePaul commit Billy Garrett Jr. scored 18 points, Dayton-bound Kyle Davis scored 14 and added five steals and Freshman Charlie Moore chipped in eight points with his long-range shooting.
Proviso East led by four at the half but Morgan Park (14-1) quickly erased the lead. When Proviso East star (SMU) Sterling Brown (Shannon’s brother) exited with 4 fouls, Morgan Park went on a game-changing run.
Brown finished with 18 points and Illinois State recruit Paris Lee scored 19 for the Proviso East Pirates (10-3).
It’s the first championship for Morgan Park. Proviso East won last year’s title. Head coach Larry Brown (SMU) and assistant Jerrance Howard watched future SMU player Sterling Brown from the crowd.

]]>Each December, huge crowds of high school hoops fans flock to this small midwestern town (pop. 12,000 ) where HS basketball legends are made.
While the best performer of the tournament was Cliff Alexander (Chicago Curie 2014), the most memorable play (perhaps in Pontiac history according to some locals), was this play by Joliet West (Joliet, IL) 6'2 senior guard Morris Dunnigan.
Down 14 at the half, Dunnigan tied the game going coast to coast and dunking over 6-9 Curie star center Cliff Alexander. Scoring 15 in the 3rd quarter, Dunnigan finished with 25 points.
Curie went on to win the game, finishing 3rd in the Tourney (after narrow loss to Chicago Simeon in semis).

]]>On Saturday, before a crowd of 7,128 fans at the inaugural Chicago Elite Classic at UIC Pavilion, Parker made his surprise debut (playing 10 minutes). His broken foot had kept him from playing since July, so he was rusty and not playing in top shape. Wearing custom Nike’s for protection, Parker finished with 6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal. After the game, he graded his performance “D+” with a smile.
After the buzz surrounding Parker subsided, senior Illinois-commits PG Jaylon Tate (2 points, 9 assists, 4 steals) and SG Kendrick Nunn (11 points, 6 rebounds) led three-time defending state champion Simeon's 56-35 season-opening victory over Milton (Ga.) as their future college coach John Groce sat courtside.
Simeon’s stifling defense led to countless turnovers and fast breaks all night long.
Best known for their defense, Simeon senior’s #15 Russell Woods (7 points) and Dayton-commit Kendall Pollard (7 points) also threw down monstrous dunks off Tate’s assists.
The starters moved to the bench for much of the second half allowing star sophomore #0 Dennis “DJ” Williams to score 12 points and star freshman #10 Zack Norvell to nail his first 3 for Simeon. The starters returned for a curtain call in the fourth with the final alley oop from Jay Tate to Kendrick Nunn.

Last season, senior point guard Keith Carter (see last season’s ballislife mixtape) led the Pirates to an undefeated regular season and a trip downstate to the Illinois state championship game.
During this fall’s preseason, Keith's cousin, sweet-shooting 6ft1 2-guard Jevon Carter has burst onto the Chicago hoops scene as a junior with his high motor and scoring abilities. He’s quick. He gets to the rim and he finishes. At the recent Mac Irvin Fire Back to School Jam (Riverside-Brookfield HS) and NBU Fall League (Whitney Young HS), Jevon Carter was scoring in bunches.
Carter currently holds offers from Kent State, Mercer and Illinois State, but expect the list to grow.

]]>For the first time in recent memory, the visiting South Side All-Stars (from Time 2 Shine Pro-Am Summer League) faced off against Chicago’s West Side All-Stars (from West Haven Safe Summer League) at Phoenix Military Academy on Chicago’s West Side.
As you will see, the lineups were stacked and the atmosphere was electric.
The South Side Team featured #7 Osiris Eldridge (NBDL), #11 Bobby Simmons (Clippers), Dexter Williams (Kings), #2 Jeremy Pargo (Grizzlies), as well as #10 Jerome Randle (Cal) and #6 Stefphon Hannah (Missou). But it was the undersized home team (West) who won big. Standouts included #3 David Bailey (Loyola), local favorite #5 Tony Bennett (Bradley), #4 Sherron Collins (Kansas), #2 Emmanuel Little (Euro Pro) and #8 Tyrone Kent (Toldeo) who was on fire throughout the game.
The West Side (Orange uniform) won by a final score of 103 – 71.
