The post Remembering Randy Moss The Basketball Player appeared first on www.ebooksnet.com.

]]>

If you know me personally then you have probably heard this story a million times but I love telling it.

When I was a freshman at FSU in 1995, I met a red-shirt freshman football player named Peter Warrick. One day after class, he invites me to play in a pick-up game with his roommate, also a red-shirt freshman. I agreed and ended up showing late to the run at the campus gym. While walking up the stairs to get to the basketball courts at the Leach Center, I hear people screaming like that scene in Blue Chips when Nick Nolte discovers Shaq. It was Peter's 6-4 roommate that had everyone going crazy. And that high-flying roommate was Randy Moss. I left that court thinking two things: I had no business being on it and Moss was the most insane athlete I've ever seen...and this is before I saw him play football.

Moss' time in Tallahassee was short. After getting busted for marijuana while on probation, FSU Coach/GOD Bobby Bowden -- who once told SI, Moss was the only player he ever saw who had the same athletic gifts as Deion Sanders -- let him go. Moss returned to his home state of West Virginia and became a star at Marshall University. He then went on to become arguably the greatest wide receiver in NFL history. And on Saturday night, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

He obviously made the right decision of choosing catching pigskins on the gridiron over catching alley-oops on a hardwood but I would have love to seen how good of a basketball player the two-time West Virginia Basketball Player Of The Year could have become.

During a visit to Kevin Garnett's Area 21 in early 2017, the Minnesota Vikings' great compared himself to KG's former Minnesota Wolves' teammate Latrell Sprewell and said he thought he could have averaged around 20 points a game in the NBA.

“You’re talking about in my prime?” said Moss to KG. “Me, personally, I think I could’ve been in the 20s, and that’s being real serious.”

He also talked about the joy of playing high school basketball with Jason "White Chocolate" Williams, who was a red-shirt basketball player at Marshall before transferring to FSU-rival University of Florida. Like Moss, Williams was also a fan of the Method Man & Redman 1995 hit "How High" and it shortened his time in Florida. After a pair of suspensions, he took his flashy game to the NBA and put together one of the most exciting rookie seasons I've ever witnessed.

During that rookie season -- shortened by a NBA lockout and also highlighted by the arrival of Vinsanity -- Nike released this great commercial about the "good ol' boys' from DuPont high school.

And ESPN the Magazine released a story about how they met.

Randy Moss actually found Jason Williams long before high school. "We were in fourth grade, playing midget football on different teams," Moss recalls during a break at Vikings minicamp. "He was quarterback and ran a bootleg. Next thing we knew, he was high-stepping into the end zone like Walter Payton. We wanted to kill him. But we never caught him." By eighth grade, Moss was on the business end of Williams bombs. "I'd throw it as far as I could, and Randy would get it," Williams says, echoing the strategy that resurrected Randall Cunningham. But roundball was Jason's obsession, and by high school his only game.

Kings beat writer Martin McNeal also put out a story with Jason Williams about the friendship.

"All I wanted to do was throw him the bomb." Said Williams. "That's the only play we really needed. I never wanted to throw any short passes to him because he was so fast. I used to drop back and throw it as high and as far as I could throw it. Randy would take care of the rest. He could run and jump and do it all.

Our basketball teams used a ferocious 1-3-1 press. It worked really well, at least party because most people were pretty intimidated before they even took the floor against us. Randy had his name and I had mine."

So in honor of those "good ol' boys" and Moss making the Pro Football Hall of Fame this weekend, here's a few more videos of the man that intimidated me and made me realize in the Fall of 1995 that I had no future playing basketball.

RANDY MOSS ON AREA 21

PETER WARRICK

As for Peter Warrick, his college career ended on a disappointing note. In 1999, he was the leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy and then was suspended because a Dillards employee allowed him and teammate Lavernaues Coles to buy $400 worth of clothing for $21.

He didn't win the trophy but did graduate with a Bachelor's degree, did make it to the NFL (4th pick) and is the reason why LeBron James wore #9 during his football days.

Warrick was also the subject of my first (of many) sports website in 1998, when I realized I had a future career on the internet.

Best handles of all-time? Rafer Alston and God Shammgod are two of the usual suspects knowledgeable hoop fans are going to bring up. But if you are just going to go off of what they were able to show in the NBA, the answers you will usually get are The Answer Allen Iverson, Pistol Pete Maravich, Bad Boy Isiah Lord Thomas III, Chef Curry, CP3, Timmy Hardaway, Jamal Crawford, Kyrie Irving and Jason "White Chocolate" Williams.

At Monday's Stance Hoops Camp (yes, that exists), White Chocolate (who Chris Webber picked over Shammgod in the video above) was asked the barbershop-worthy question and he picked the Uncle Drew star. I agree with him and Allen Iverson, who back in 2015 said Kyrie (and Steph Curry) was "next level" with "more handles" than him.

Here's a few reasons why we all feel this way. If you only have a minute, then I suggest you watch the following short mixtape by Cycle. If you have a few minutes, then scroll down and enjoy the sights and sounds of a lot of ankles being broken.

BEST HANDLES WITH CLEVELAND

BEST HANDLES WITH BOSTON

KINGS OF CROSSOVER VOL 1

WHITE CHOCOLATE

And I can't talk about Jason Williams and not show his Sacramento Kings mixtape. Kyrie might have better handles but his best assists can't touch the ones in this video.

And Memphis Williams doesn't get enough love. Not only was he just as exciting as the guy who used to hit Vlade Divac in the face with great passes, his best scoring and assists seasons came during his time near Graceland.

The worst thing about the 98-99 NBA lockout to me was being robbed of a couple of months of Vinsanity and White Chocolate highlights. Since the season started mid-season, on February 5th of 1999, we also didn't get an All-Star game and possibly a Vince Carter appearance in the dunk contest a year before the epic 2000 one. Better yet, a possible dunk-off between Vince and 1997 Dunk champion Kobe Bryant!

Besides 32 extra games of Vince Carter and Jason Williams, we were also robbed of some extra time to watch rookies like Dirk Nowitzki, Peja Stojakovic, and a headband-less Paul Pierce.

Here's what those rookies did in their NBA regular season debuts.

 • Vince Carter vs Celtics: 16 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block (5-11 FG, 0-1 3pt)
 • Paul Pierce vs Raptors: 19 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, 4 blocks (7-14 FG, 2-4 3pt)
 • Dirk Nowitzki vs Sonics: 2 points, 0 rebounds, 4 assists, 0 steals, 0 blocks (0-5 FG, 0-1 3pt)
 • Peja Stojakovic vs Spurs: 2 points, 1 rebound, 0 assists, 1 steal, 0 blocks (1-6 FG, 0-3 3pt)
 • Jason Williams vs Spurs: 21 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals, 1 block (9-19 FG, 3-7 3pt)

Vince would end up winning the Rookie of the Year award among arguably the most exciting rookie class in NBA history. A class that also featured these familiar names: Rafer Alston, Ricky Davis, Mike Bibby, Antawn Jamison, Rashard Lewis, Keon Clark, Cat Mobley, and Ty Lue!

The one good thing that came from the NBA lockout are these great Nike commercials featuring Spike Lee and Samuel L. Jackson.

Even though he's made nine All-Defensive First Teams, you probably weren't surprised to see Frobe Bryant get crossed by White Chocolate at the 11-second mark of this Old Skool BBall video (this video has now been removed). But, you probably raised an eyebrow when Kobe responded by going behind his back to split Jason Williams and Tony "I once scored 50 points in an NBA game" Delk (at 4:56). Then, you probably did an O face or said "Oh shit!" when Kobe caused Williams and Delk to collide into each other and hug the way you would after a game-winner.

Unfortunately for the Lakers, there would be no game-winner in this playoff game. After taking Games 1 and 2, the eventual winners of the series and champions of the playoffs lost Game 3, despite a game-high 35 by Kobe. The credit and blame for the win and loss goes to Chris Webber for his 29/14/9 line and MVP Shaq for missing 14 of his 22 shots from the field and 9 of his 14 free throws.

Anyways, this post isn't about the series, the heated rivalry between the Lakers and Queens, the big shot by Big Shot Bob, the fixed games or when Doug Christie pissed off a lot of women by hitting Rick Fox with an uppercut. This post is about Kobe's underrated handles. It's not as underrated as his dunking -- 1996-2000 Kobe is easily one of the top five dunkers ever in my book of unpopular opinions -- but it's pretty underrated.

A crazy story about his handles goes back to 1988 when he went with Adidas to the Streetball National Finals in the Philippines. During a mall exhibition, he pulled off the elbow dunk a couple of years before Vince Carter did it in the NBA Dunk Contest and pulled out some streetball moves a year before the landmark And1 Mixtape VHS dropped.

I'm sure I'm not going to convince you Kobe had underrated handles by showing you footage of him acting like Rafer Alston around these defenders, so here's 30 minutes of Kobe breaking ankles and putting NBA players on skates.

If you are here just because you love White Chocolate, then this is for you. And remember, Williams eventually did get a championship, playing alongside Shaq in Miami.

Despite some minor injuries to players like Jason "White Chocolate" Williams and Kenyon Martin and some rust on players like Allen Iverson, I'm calling the debut of The BIG3 league on Sunday a success.

Due to their TV deal with FS1, the entertaining games weren't streamed live or televised until Monday. If you don't have FS1, which has been showing the games throughout today, you can catch the best highlights from the games in the recap videos below.

Damn this video makes me feel old!

I remember over a decade ago, watching little Shareef and Shaqir O'Neal trying to shoot hoops at their Dad's indoor basketball gym aka The Shaq Center (which has one of my favorite pics of Shaq and Hakeem on the walls) in Orlando, Florida on an episode of MTV Cribs. Now I'm watching Shareef throw down dunks and Shaqir make Hakeem-like moves on that same court in a Home Team Hoops' video.

I also have many fond memories of watching Jason "White Chocolate" Williams entering the NBA, making unbelievable passes -- like his elbow pass in the Rookie/Sophomore game -- and winning a championship a decade ago with teammate Shaq in Miami, Florida. Now I'm watching his son, Jaxon, make the same elbow-pass against Shareef.

The like father/like son video also contains class of 2018 point guard Ronaldo Segu and small forward Nassir Little; Both have offers from FSU - a school I attended two decades ago!

Damn, I feel really old.

After the Pedro's Posse team was eliminated in the $2 million Basketball Tournament, Jason Williams had some very quotable sound bytes about the tournament, Ben Simmons (who was in attendance), KD going to the Warriors and Charles Barkley during the post-game conference.

Via?Mike Ortiz's post on Did You See That

Q: With Ben Simmons being here, how do you feel his passing skills relate to yours?
Jason Williams: I’m not one to compare man. I got a Championship, that’s all I’m going to say. Good luck with the Sixers getting a Championship.

Q: Did The Tournament live up to your expectations?
Jason Williams:?Man it definitely?lived up to my expectations. Anytime I can play basketball like I said earlier is great. And to put $2 million on the line too, that’s just icing on the cake…I mean I would rather just win the tournament than get the $2 million. I’m playing for the win. The $2 million is just coming along with it.

Q: ?Jason, being in Kevin Durant’s shoes would you’ve gone to the Golden State Warriors too?
Jason Williams:?Ah man, you can’t put me on Kevin Durant’s level first and foremost. If I was Kevin Durant and that’s what I wanted to do, then that’s what I would’ve done. I wouldn’t have made a decision based on anybody else. Because it seems like he’s done that for 8 or 9 years now. You know you’ve gotta take care of yourself and make yourself happy at the end of the day. I mean all these guys [Charles] Barkley and them talking about oh they wouldn’t have done it, well they was never free agents back in the day…like they didn’t have the choice. Nobody wanted his ass [Barkley] on their team because he was a loser. So that’s what I think about that.

Q: Jason, do you hope to get back into the NBA or College basketball at any capacity anytime soon, as far as like coaching?
Jason Williams:?You know man, I’m one irresponsible 40-year old. So coaching is out the window…no way. You know I could maybe be an assistant somewhere. But if I’ve got a responsibility to be somewhere at like 3 o’clock tomorrow for practice and someone calls me to go to Augusta and play golf, I’m going to go play golf. So I can’t have that responsibility. So no. But as an assistant, I’ll be there to help. It might be Tuesdays and Thursdays but other than that, I’m good.

Q: Are you guys going to be back next year?
Jason Williams: Does a fat hog fart?

I know none of the copycat websites are going to give us a tip but I am asking you all to please credit?Mike and his site: DYSTNOW. Thanks, now enjoy the best Jason Williams mixtape ever.

Fans of the late 90s and early 00's Sacramento Kings are going to love this! Former Kings point guards Jason "White Chocolate" Williams will be running in the backcourt with the man who replaced him in Cowbell Kingdom during the summer of 2001: Mike Bibby.

Bibby - now looking like a cover model for Men's Fitness magazine - will be joining William's Orlando pro-am team, Pedro's Posse, to compete in the $2 million The Basketball Tournament. The team, or should I say Posse, will also have some big names as boosters, including Chandler Parsons, Austin Rivers and Courtney Lee - all vets of the Orlando pro-am league.

The star filled tournament also features teams with these boosters: John Wall, Kristaps Porzingis, Trevor Ariza, Rudy Gay, Victor Cruz, Matt Ryan, Pacman Jones, Cody Zeller, Will Barton, Emmanuel Mudiay, Alec Burks, The Game, Thaddeus Young, Sam Dekker, CJ McCollum.

And if that wasn't crazy enough, the Morris Twins and JaVale McGee will play the role of coach and/or GM on other teams.

Respect is earned, never given.

5'10" Chance Greene might not get picked first in your local area pick-up game. He also might not get picked second or third or even fourth, reality is, Chance Greene is not an intimidating looking basketball player. However, reality also is, 5'10" Chance Greene can flat out ball. In the past, high school hoops in North Carolina has been about the high flyers, the freak athletes, the men among boys. Now, with Charlotte native and reigning NBA MVP Steph Curry blazing the big stage, a grassroots shift has begun. A shift that includes shooters with quick releases and a nice handle that can consistently get you three points instead of just two. The same type of players that draw defenses out, opening up the lane for the post guys, and demand help-side defense to step up allowing for other shooters to get open. A player with flash and flare that ultimately gets the job done and wins basketball games. This is the type of player Chance Greene is. A little turnover prone at times, Greene continues to learn the game. Alongside 6'10" teammate and future UVA big, Jay Huff, Voyager Academy finished this season in the NCHSAA with a 32-4 record en route to winning a 1A State Championship. According to MaxPreps.com, Greene finished the season averaging 15 points and just under 6 assists per game. Greene is getting DIII looks but I'd say there should be a solid DII roster spot with his name on it. WAKE UP COACHES, BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

Here's an extended version of the title: former NBA showman Jason Williams aka White Chocolate, coached his son, Jaxon Williams aka White Chocolate Jr, to a 100 point victory!

What more do you need to know? Besides the showtime team was winning 50 to 0 in the first half. But the opposing team caught fire in the 2nd, scored 3 points and pulled within 78. Unfortunately they cooled off and only scored 1 point in the final 5 minutes.

Shout out to Ryan Currie at Home Team Hoops for keeping the Jason Williams vids coming and representing the Florida hoops scene.

In 2015, one of the most popular videos on our website was a Home Team Hoops Mix of Jason Williams' 13 year old son, Jaxon Williams. It's 2016 and the Home Team is back with another video of Jaxon! BUT, this one is mainly just footage of Jaxon working out with Showtime Hoops. Sorry. If that disappoints you, there is a couple of nice clips of Jaxon showing off his fancy passing in the beginning and you can always watch the following highlight-filled video again.

And then watch this must-see Jason Williams Kings mix for the first or hundredth time - it's just as good on the hundredth as it was on the first.

The King of NBA Impersonations has built a large almost cult-like fan base over the past few months with his hilarious and dead-on impressions of past and present NBA players. It looks like the Kings organization are among those fans because they asked BdotAdot5 to do his best impression of their beloved White Chocolate - Jason Williams.

As expected, Bdot delivered by showing the flashy dimes, dribbles and sometimes unnecessary extra mustard by the man who used to hit teammates (namely Vlade Divac) in the face with his passes.

KING OF ORLANDO SUMMER HOOPS

Bdot has been one of the highlights of the past summer but Jason Williams was the king of the summer in my books. The 39 year old is still generating highlights down in the Orlando Pro-Am and his son even made some noise on July the 4th when a mixtape of Jaxon breaking ankles went viral.

So how exciting is a near 40 year old Jason Williams? So exciting that when I recently took a family vacation from Houston to Florida and my kids asked about going to Disney World, I actually thought about asking my wife to take the kids to Disney while I check out the Orlando Pro-Am to see Jason in person.

William is one of the few players I loved watching that I never had a chance to see in person and from the looks of these mixes that Home Team Hoops keeps pumping out, it looks like I'll have just as much enjoyment watching him now as I would have when I was recording him on VHS tapes. He's still crossing defenders, he's still throwing behind the back passes from half-court, he's still making bounce pass alley-oops, he's still making defenders look as silly as he did Gary Payton during his rookie season.

A rookie season that was 16 years ago.

"I did that for 13 years" yells Jason Williams at the Orlando Pro-Am ref who called him for travelling.

Home Team Hoops is back with another entry in the Jason Williams is Winning the Summer series. Last week a video of the 39 year old created some buzz and then a video of his 13 year old son, Jaxon, created some major noise.

Nothing that spectacular happens in this video but if you are like me then you will watch anything with White Chocolate - I would even watch a video of White Chocolate making a Chocolate cake...but obviously rather see him breaking ankles.

The internet went crazy this past week watching almost 40 year old Jason "White Chocolate" Williams show that he can still break ankles at the Orlando Pro-Am. Get ready for the internet to go crazy again with Home Team Hoops new video of Jason Williams'....13 year old (?) son Jaxon aka "White Chocolate Jr" breaking ankles and making flashy passes.

The footage is from a scrimmage and a couple of AAU games and the reason why I put a question mark next to the age of 13 is because there's a video of little ball handling wiz named Jaxon Williams (making 10 3-pointers in a row!) that was posted 2 ?years ago and it says he's 8. So either there's two young Jaxon Williams out there or the age is wrong on one of these vids. Regardless of the exact age, the kid is fun to watch.

Last summer I was raving that 38 year old Jason Williams "still has it" after watching him tear up the Orlando Pro-Am and yell "I ain't travel since I was 6." Well, in terms of "it" being excitement, nothing has changed since last summer, or when he retired at the age of 33, or when he came into the league and left Gary Payton frozen at 23, or when he was named West Virginia Palyers of the Year at 18. The 39 (pushing 40) year old White Chocolate is still a magician with the rock and still making the Orlando Pro-Am one of my favorite Pro-Ams to watch every summer.

AUSTIN RIVERS VS JASON WILLIAMS

Hopefully Austin Rivers makes his return too. Last summer he and Williams were the two main attractions.

Austin also played well in 2012 when Vince Carter, Big Baby, Chandler Parsons, Mo Speights and DeShawn Stevenson played.

But in my eyes, the Orlando Pro-Am belongs to one man: White Chocolate! 38, 39, 40 and probably even when he's 50, I'll still be saying Jason Williams still has "it."

Shout out to Home Team Hoops for the mixes and be on the look out for Jason Williams who will be playing alongside the White Mamba Brian Scalabrine on the Grantland team in the Million Dollar Tournament.

It looks like Jordan Walton of the MoKan Elite AAU team has been watching some Pistol Pete and Jason Williams highlight videos.

Now, i'm not calling the incoming high school freshman at Glendale High in Springfield the next White Chocolate - who was named USA Today's West Virginia Player of the Year before he became a NBA star - but I will say he's worth keeping an eye on right now for his ability to make some sick highlight passes and anklebreakers.

Jason Williams might not be moving as quickly as he was back in his Kings' days when he was leaving Gary Payton in the dust and was 2nd to only Vince Carter in Sportscenter Top 10 appearances but the shot and craftiness is still there. That was evident from these back to back games featuring White Chocolate and Austin Rivers.

Austin continued to dominate the Orlando Pro-Am with 42 points in the first game but it was the sight of 38 year old Jason Williams dribbling between his legs, making bounce passes and hitting from down that brought me so much joy. But it's not like I though he fell off because Williams has been entertaining fans around the world for the past couple of years with the NBA Legends tour. He even pulled out the trademark elbow pass in China last year.

Here's also some more highlights from Home Team Hoops of Austin and Jason from last year's Orlando Pro-Am.

The Orlando Pro-Am doesn't get much love from the media but it's always been one of my favorites. Especially back in 2012 when a young Chandler Parsons was playing alongside an old Vince Carter who was draining jumpshots from near half-court. Another youngster playing in 2012 was local kid Austin Rivers from Winter Park who just drafted by the Hornets.

Rivers made his annual return to the Orlando Pro-Am this summer and scored 42 points against a team with Jason Williams and Patrick Ewing Jr.

Also worth mentioning was Austin's performance at the 2011 NC Pro-Am where he "dunked on" Rasheed Wallace.

Flashy is not a word you want to describe a player on your team. People usually hear flashy and think the player is a showoff doing unnecessary moves that doesn’t get the job done. When people hear “flashy,” they think of “all show and no go.” Basketball fundamentalists cringe when they hear about a behind-the-back no look pass. They’d rather see a jump stop with a solid two handed bounce pass for a nice bank shot. And that’s fine. Well... not really. Being flashy is not always a bad thing. Sometimes, the only pass you can make is behind-the-back, and other times you need to throw off your defender by doing something they’ve never seen. The game is meant to change and players are supposed to improve and create new moves and take advantage of the D. Innovation is part of being successful and that includes basketball. Pete Maravich and Jason Williams were some of the flashiest players to play in the NBA. “Pistol” Pete was a man way before his time while Jason Williams added a flair to the game that no other player brought. Both were criticized for their outrageous style of plays, but both brought an elegance to the game few others will bring.

Growing up as a Laker Fan, Nick Van Exel was my favorite player. However, Jason “White Chocolate” Williams was a close second. The way he played the game was not like anyone I had ever seen. J-Will strove during a time when streetball was becoming popular. His style of play brought streetball to the mainstream. Yeah, I know Rafer “Skip to my Lou” Alston was a streetball legend, but he wasn’t doing it in the League like J-Will did during that time. Skip was still fighting for his spot on NBA teams when J-Will was getting crowds hyped with his highlights. He threw all kinds of passes from no-look lobs to one-handed behind the head bullets. In the Rookie/Sophomore game, he threw a behind-the-back, off-the-elbow pass. He did things that I can’t even explain in words. He was always criticized for being too flashy leading to too many turnovers, which is one of the reasons why Sacramento traded him to the Grizz for Bibby. But during his prime, J-Will was one of the most exciting players to watch because no one ever knew what he was going to do next.

Some of you probably don’t even know who Pete Maravich is, but he’s known as one of the best college players ever. At LSU, he averaged 44 points a game without a 3-point line. But we’re not arguing who’s better. “Pistol” Pete had a knack for doing the unsuspected. His style was unmatched during that time. He was throwing passes no one had ever done and came up with ones that NBA players to this day still can’t do. He opened up the game to a whole another style of play. Pete Maravich was one of those players I wish I could go back in time and watch him play live. I can only go off highlights and articles I read, but from what I’ve seen and read, Pete Maravich did things no one ever thought of before.

There’s no question that Pete Maravich was the better overall player, but who was the better showsman? “Pistol” Pete opened up the game to those who came after him, and J-Will took advantage and created his own flamboyant style. So who’s the flashier player: J-Will or Pistol Pete?
