There is shakeup at the top of the new edition of the FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com, as previous No. 2 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) goes down in the CIF Southern Section Open Division semifinals. Defending FAB 50 national champ Chino Hills (Calif.) also goes down in the semifinals. Read on to see where both clubs fell as we explain the scenarios on how they can bounce back, who the results helped and what's in store. The two newcomers this week are Archbishop Wood (Warminster, Pa.) and North (Oshkosh, Wis.).

By Ronnie Flores

For two consecutive seasons, we went against the grain in placing a team other than Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) as the preseason No. 1 ranked team in California. As compilers of the Cal-Hi Sports Top 20 Weekly Rankings for over 35 years, we don't just judge off talent level, rather a bunch of factors that include tradition, senior-leadership and other mundane factors. We have the luxury of seeing California's top teams year-round and try to use that keen insight to place teams in a sold preseason pecking order.

Other credible national polls placed Sierra Canyon as not only preseason California No. 1, but No. 1 in the nation last season. Our state preseason No. 1 Chino Hills (Calif.) started off No. 11 in the FAB 50 and went wire-to-wire as California's No. 1 ranked team and was able to capture the mythical national title with a 35-0 mark. Sierra Canyon lost its first game of the 2015-16 season.

In 2016-17, we went with Bishop Montgomery (Torrance, Calif.) as preseason state No. 1, and started the Knights No. 7 in the FAB 50, over perhaps an even better Sierra Canyon team. Again, some polls started Sierra Canyon No. 1 in the nation.

Our rankings didn't look good early on when Bishop Montgomery lost in its opener to unranked Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, Calif.) at the same event Sierra Canyon lost at a year earlier. There was a caveat to that result, however, as San Diego St.-bound Jordan Schakel didn't start and was severely limited playing in his first game since July 2016 because of injury. To make matters worse, star junior guard Davy Singleton didn't play at all.

Coach Doug Mitchell jokingly told his team it didn't have to worry about rankings the rest of the season, as the focus shifted to getting healthy and peaking at the right time. It all came together last weekend for the Knights, as they knocked off previous FAB 50 No. 2 and top seed Sierra Canyon, 70-63, in the CIF Southern Section Open Division semifinals before 10,258 fans, some who paid over $300 a piece for court side seats at USC's Galen Center as part of a semifinal doubleheader. With the victory, Bishop Montgomery will attempt to win its second CIFSS Open Division title in three years this Saturday.

Bishop Montgomery jumped all over Sierra Canyon and built a 20-4 lead, but after the Trailblazers made their expected run, it was Schakel who hit two daggers 3-pointers late in the fourth quarter to fend off the nation's No. 2 team. Schakel finished with 20 points, and Mitchell also got a clutch performance from All-American candidate Ethan Thompson, who finished with 21 points and five rebounds. The Knights will face traditional California power Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), after it avenged its only loss of the season so far with a 83-80 overtime victory over Chino Hills in the second semifinal.

Chino Hills went cold from outside the arch and wasn't able to get to the rim at will as it did in the first matchup of the season at the Tarkanian Classic. The difference was the presence of 7-foot Bol Bol, who blocked five shots, altered a few others and finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Mater Dei has not lost with Bol in the lineup and although it is a stronger team with his presence, Chino Hills had a late lead and ample opportunity to win the game. That's how strong all four of California best teams are and why over 10,000 fans came out for two games that didn't decide any championship.

Now The Rankings Part

With its win, Bishop Montgomery moved up eight spots in the FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com to its preseason position -- No. 7. Sierra Canyon took a tumble from No. 2 all the way down to No. 12. Montgomery deserves credit for knocking off a legitimate FAB 50 National title contender and a team that owns wins over new No. 2 La Lumiere (La Porte, Ind.) and No. 3 Memphis East (Memphis, Tenn.).

Mater Dei jumped up six spots to crack the Top 10, and remains behind Bishop Montgomery for a couple of reasons. First, Mater Dei needed overtime to advance to the CIFSS Open Division final, whereas Bishop Montgomery's win was more decisive against a team with a stronger overall national resume. Mater Dei did avenge its only loss and has a legit 50-50 chance to defeat the Knights despite being ranked three spots lower.

The Sierra Canyon-Bishop Montgomery result was also key for Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.). The Eagles own a victory over a full-strength Bishop Montgomery team and moved up five spots to No. 5 in front of the Knights and No. 6 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.). After the Eagles fell to St. Benedict's Prep of New Jersey (a team not eligible for the FAB 50), it fell below the IMG team it defeated at the City of Palms Classic in Ft. Myers, Fla, but Montgomery's key win creates a linear pecking order. Montverde has a loss to No. 4 Imhotep Charter (Philadelphia, Pa.), and Sierra Canyon at No. 12 is now in front of the Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) and Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson. Va.) teams it defeated head-to-head.

The rankings could get shaken up again next week, and to make matters even more interesting, the season is not over for Sierra Canyon and Chino Hills. These four teams are going to be the top four seeds in the upcoming SoCal Open Division regional pairings that will be announced March 5, the day after the CIFSS Open Division final at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

Sierra Canyon could conceivably bounce back and beat two of these teams, and then the earlier wins over La Lumiere and Memphis East would come back into play. There still plenty of results that will affect the pecking order and Chino Hills or Sierra Canyon could still end up as CIF State Open Division champions.

There is not as much movement outside the Top 15 of the FAB 50, as the two newcomers are Archbishop Wood (Warminster, Pa.) and North (Oshkosh, Wis.).

No. 48 Wood took on Neumann-Goretti (Philadelphia, Pa.) in the Philly Catholic League Final at the famed Palestra on Monday, February 27, and came away with a 65-58 victory. Collin Gillespie had 24 points to help Wood win its first ever Catholic League title. North is the top-ranked Division 1 team in the AP Wisconsin state poll.

Bishop Montgomery (Torrance, Calif.) plays its most complete game of the season, as the No. 15 team in the FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com knocks off the Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.), the nation's No. 2 ranked team, 70-63, to advance to the CIF Southern Section Open Division title game. Oregon-State bound Ethan Thompson and San Diego State-bound Jordan Schakel leads the way for Knights.

The CIF Southern Section Open Division semifinals have been highly anticipated since it became clear California had four elite teams this season. After those four teams -- FAB 50 No. 2 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.), No. 13 Chino Hills (Calif.), No. 15 Bishop Montgomery (Torrance, Calif.) and No. 16 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) -- won their respective quarterfinal games on Tuesday night, the semifinal games at the Galen Center in downtown Los Angeles became a hot ticket.

Some basketball-crazed fans paid $300 plus for a single face-value $40 court seat on Craig's List and in first semifinal, a majority of them expected to see Marvin Bagley III and his Sierra Canyon teammates advance to the section title game. Bishop Montgomery, however, had other ideas and played its most complete game of the season, winning 70-63, to advance to the prestigious CIFSS Open Division section title game for the second time in three seasons.

Bishop Montgomery was the No. 4 seed in the playoffs, but hadn't really shown what it was capable of so far this season because of injuries -- until this game. The Knights opened the season ranked No. 7 in the FAB 50 and No. 1 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports and finally looked the part after losing their first game of the season without David Singleton and with Jordan Schakel severely limited.

Schakel had a big second half and Oregon-St. Ethan Thompson sparked them to begin the game, as Bishop Montgomery (26-2) took a 13-2 lead as Thompson had six points in that run. Thompson had 12 points in the first half as the Knights took a 37-30 halftime lead.

"I'm very proud of my team because they were extremely tough team," said Bishop Montgomery head coach Doug Mitchell. "The guys followed our game plan perfectly to pinch off the drive and give up the 3-pointer."

Mitchell expected the nation's No. 2 ranked to make a run, and the Trailblazers did after trailing by as much as 16 points (20-4). Behind Bagley, Sierra Canyon (27-2) took its first lead on a 3-pointer by the nation's top-ranked junior prospect that made the score 41-39 after his follow up lay-up cut the Trailblazers' deficit to one-point. Bagley's alley-oop slam with 3:45 in the third period made it 43-39.

Bishop Montgomery weathered the storm and took control behind the play of Schakel. The San Diego-St bound forward played tough defense inside on Bagley (who still finished with 28 points and 12 rebounds) and hit big shots down the stretch the spark the Knights after Sierra Canyon's 13-0 run.

With Bishop Montgomery holding on to a 54-51 lead halfway through the final period and the shot clock running out, Schakel banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 3:40 remaining. The shot seemed to take the sails out of Sierra Canyon and it really was magnified when Schakel hit another triple to make it 60-51 with 3:08 remaining.

"That was the most awesome feeling of my basketball life ever (making the bank shot)," said Schakel, who didn't start and played limited minutes in the Knights' season-opening loss to Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, Calif.). The Knights' other loss was to FAB 50 No. 10 Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.).

The game was sealed when Thompson finished a Euro step-through by Bagley with 1:19 remaining to make the score 64-54, as the Knights crowd started chanting, "We want Chino". They were referring to a potential open final date next Saturday with Chino Hills, but the Huskies ended up losing to Mater Dei, 83-80, in overtime, in the semifinal nightcap.

Thompson finished with 21 points and five rebounds. Schakel made 4-of-10 3-pointers to finish with 20 points. Sophomore point guard Gianni Hunt hit two 3-pointers and finished with 10 points, while junior point guard Davy Singleton (who didn't play at all versus Bishop O'Dowd) added 11 points and six assists.

Besides Bagley, Sierra Canyon was led statistically by Arizona St.-bound point guard Remy Martin. He finished with 16 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five turnovers.

Bishop Montgomery will attempt to win its second CIFSS Open Division title game in three years, as it showed the country tonight it has the ability to be California's, and one of the nation's, best teams. It just took a while to show the country after its slow start.

"This game didn't mean much because we still haven't won a championship, but we're growing as a unit," Singleton said.

Oak Hill Academy of Virginia and La Lumiere of Indiana remain in the top spots in the first FAB 50 Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com of the 2016-17 regular season. There are eight newcomers to the rankings led by No. 23 Simeon of Chicago and No. 27 Vashon of St. Louis, both whom were regionally-ranked in the preseason.

By Ronnie Flores

Just as we didn't penalize Oak Hill Academy when it dropped an early game last season after Harry Giles (Duke) went down with injury, the theme of the first regular season FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com is to not overreact to an early-season loss by an elite team. Last season we knew Oak Hill had a very good team (even without Giles) and it eventually adjusted without him and went on to post a 45-1 record and No. 2 FAB 50 finish.

This year, preseason No. 4 Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.) dropped a 69-67 contest to regionally-ranked Vashon (St. Louis, Mo.) at the Holiday Hoopsgiving in Atlanta. Vashon is a quality club and the Wildcats bounced back to defeat preseason No. 6 Greenforest Christian Academy (Decatur, Ga.) 53-42 at their own Wheeler Hoops Classic. With so many strong teams in Georgia, and because Wheeler plays such a loaded schedule and was not afraid to take on tough competition before December, it only drops two spots in the updated FAB 50 to the spot Greenforest previously occupied.

Wheeler hits the road to take on No. 32 Westlake of Atlanta (which has only lost to No. 19 Greenforest) on Friday before playing new No. DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, Md.) at the National High School Hoops Festival on December 9 at DeMatha. In 2004-05, the only loss for eventual FAB 50 national champion Niagara Falls (N.Y.), led by future Syracuse players Johnny Flynn and Paul Harris, came against Vashon, which is the second highest-ranked newcomer in this week's FAB 50 at No. 27.

New Early Season Trend: Big-Time Matchups

With events such as the Holiday Hoopsgiving and the Thanksgiving Hoopfest in Dallas growing in prestige, many big intersectional games involving FAB 50-ranked teams are beginning to take place in November, which was a rarity 10 or 15 years ago. The emerging trend is going to gain in significance in future seasons as state associations push up the beginning of their winter sports calendars. As rankings compilers, the will cause us to adjust our criteria when it comes to early losses. We want to reward teams for taking early risks when their teams might not be jelled and not overly punish a loss, especially for team that have other games with FAB 50 ranked foes coming up.

We didn't drop Bishop Montgomery (Torrance, Calif.) too far after it lost to unranked Bishop O'Dowd, 70-63, in the marquee game of the NorCal Tip-Off Classic on November 26. The Knights, the preseason No. 1 ranked team in the state according to Cal-Hi Sports, played without junior starter Davy Singleton and with San Diego St.-bound Jordan Schakel severely limited by a lingering injury. We gave Bishop Montgomery the benefit of the doubt by dropping them only three spots, as it did bounce back to win the Trevor Ariza Tip-Off Tournament at Westchester (Los Angeles) for the sixth consecutive season over the host Comets, but it clearly doesn't have as much wiggle room as Wheeler because of the comparative strength of schedules. It also caused Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.), which opens it season this week at its own tournament, to leapfrog the Knights in the FAB 50. Led by Mr. Basketball USA candidate Marvin Bagley and UCLA-bound Cody Riley, Sierra Canyon faces top-ranked Oak Hill Academy on December 15 in a game televised by ESPN.

We considered keeping preseason No. 10 Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.) in front of Simeon (Chicago) after coach Steve Turner's club hit the road and lost to the Wolverines, 73-58, at the Chicago Elite Classic last weekend. The margin of victory and the fact we had Simeon in our preseason Midwest Regional Top 20 Rankings kept us from treating the loss like the ones Wheeler and Bishop Montgomery suffered. Robert Smith's club is the highest-rated newcomer at No. 23, one spot ahead of Gonzaga, which will have plenty of opportunity to climb back up in the rankings.

Of this week's eight newcomers, only three were not regionally-ranked in the preseason. The highest-rated newcomer which wasn't on our preseason radar is No. 29 Cordova (Tenn.). Led by juniors Tyler Harris and Rodgerick Brown, the Wolves have the opportunity to climb in the next set of rankings as they take on fast-rising No. 16 Norcross (Ga.) at the Memphis vs. Atlanta Classic at Duluth (Ga.) on December 10.

Note: The FAB 50 powered by www.ebooksnet.com is a continuation of the National Sports News Service ratings that began in 1952. These were the first national high school rankings and the late Art Johlfs of Minnesota compiled them. They were compiled for many years by the late Barry Sollenberger of Phoenix, who merged them into the FAB 50 17 years ago.
