Simeon Playoff Game Goes Down to the Wire AGAIN! Guard Battle: Ahron Ulis vs Simeon Seniors!

Chicago Simeon (19-14) narrowly defeated Brother Rice in the Regional Finals last week. Next the Wolverines faced Marian Catholic (27-5) from suburban Chicago Heights led by junior PG
Ahron Ulis (brother of former Kentucky star Tyler Ulis) in the Class 4A Eisenhower Sectional semifinals.

Simeon pounced early. Unsigned seniors Antonio Reeves and Kejuan Clements continued their hot streak but Ulis kept Marian around, scoring 13 of his team’s 21 first half points.

Simeon led most of the game but you'll want to see this ending!!!
Unsigned senior Clements led the Wolverines with 15 points, 5 steals, 5 assists and Ahamad Bynum and Antonio Reeves each scored 11.

Chris White finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for Marian Catholic. Junior guards Joe Green (16 points, 8 rebounds) and Ahron Ulis (15 points, 7 assists) led the Spartans.

Chicago's Biggest Upset?! Simeon vs Whitney Young City Playoffs! Full Highlights!

Chicago's biggest and best known high school basketball programs are Simeon Career Academy and Whitney Young HS.

Both play national schedules. Young (22-7, 8-1) plays in the Red North/West. Simeon (16-13, 5-4) plays in the South/Central. Normally when they play, the game is held in an arena.

This time, they meet for the first time this season in the Chicago Public League quarterfinals at Young (who had better record).

Just a few weeks ago Simeon dropped out of the top 25 in Chicago. They were 6-9 at one point this season! City basketball fans expected Young to cruise.

Simeon plays 2 freshmen Andre AJ Casey Jr and Jaylen Drane and sophomore Ahamad Bynum meaningful minutes which is rare for young Simeon varsity players.

Simeon's top seniors are all unsigned, Antonio Reeves (transfer from Shadow Mountain), Kejuan Clements and Jeremiah Stamps.
Young is led by juniors DJ Steward, Tyler Beard and unsigned senior Myles Baker.

Tons of college coaches (for Chicago this season) were in the gym including Wisconsin’s Greg Gard, DePaul’s Dave Leitao, UW-Milwaukee’s Pat Baldwin and Shaka Smart of Texas, along with assistants from Mizzou, Iowa State, DePaul and Wisconsin.

It was a game of runs. Young led 55-49 with 5 minutes to play in the 4th quarter. From there, Simeon dominated. They finished on a 17-2 run!

Final score Simeon 66-Young 57.
Simeon moves on to play rivals Morgan Park in the Final 4.

Simeon's Kejuan Clements scored 14 points, 6 rebounds. Antonio Reeves scored 18 points, 4 rebounds. Ahamad Bynum finished with 12 points, 8 rebounds.

For Young, DJ Steward finished with 24 points, 10 rebounds and Myles Baker added 13.

Nationally-ranked Simeon faced Marist (27-5) in the Illinois 4A Sectional finals at Thornton HS (Harvey, IL). Led by All-area senior point guard Morgan Taylor, Marist threw the first punch.
The RedHawks started the game 8-0. And Marist led by 9 as late as the fourth quarter, 41-32.
Marist out-shot and out-rebounded #1 Simeon but things turned in the late stretches of the game. Led by seniors Talen Horton-Tucker, Messiah Jones and junior Kejuan Clements, Simeon went on a huge 14-3 run late.
Simeon won 53-48. Next Simeon will face fellow Chicago Public League powerhouse Whitney Young HS in the Supersectional for a trip downstate.
Marist was led by senior Jack Ellison (14 points, 12 rebounds), David Daniels (12 points, nine rebounds) and Morgan Taylor (nine points).
Simeon was led by Talen Horton-Tucker (15 points), Messiah Jones (10 points) and Kejuan Clements (12 points) who scored 9 in the critical 4th.

Simeon Career Academy has evolved into a national-level team under Coach Rob Smith.
The nationally-ranked Wolverines haven't lost to an in-state opponent this season. They won the Chicago city title and now they're focused on winning state.
They faced up and coming suburban Catholic power Brother Rice coached by former UNC guard and Brother Rice alum Bobby Frasor.
Brother Rice struck first. It was a 2-point game at half. In the end, Simeon's depth, size, athleticism and talent won out.
Simeon won 70-55. Stats weren't available for Rice but Marquise Kennedy and Josh Boulanger were standouts.
Drake commit Messiah Jones landed hard on his elbow and head in the second half but returned to dunk on some defenders and seal the win with a windmill dunk! Jones finished with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks.
Talen Horton-Tucker finished with 21 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks. Zion Young scored 13 off the bench. Simeon point guard Kejuan Clements scored 13 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists.

Talen Horton-Tucker has had a breakout senior season playing for Chicago Simeon Career Academy. The Iowa State commit has already led Simeon to a 3-peat of Chicago city titles.
Now they begin their state tournament run in Burbank Illinois versus host Reavis HS.
The game was never close with Simeon leading 20-2 after one quarter.
Talen Horton-Tucker played limited minutes, but he had the opposing fans chanting his name (to put him back in)!
After the game, Tucker signed autographs and posed for pictures with opposing players and fans who lined-up outside the gym.

Chicago's 2018 Public League Basketball Title game featured Orr Academy from the West Side who were playing for their first city title versus South Side (and national) powerhouse Simeon Career Academy.
Chicago State's arena was virtually at capacity as the city's 2 heavyweight's faced-off.
Tied at halftime, Simeon never slowed-down. Perhaps it was depth or experience or simply the play of star senior Talen Horton-Tucker (23 points, 10 rebounds, 5 blocks) who willed the Wolverines to a 69-59 victory.
This was Simeon's third Public League title in 3 years. Senior Talen and junior PG Kejuan Clements (18 points, 5 rebounds) played on all 3 varsity squads.
Simeon's the first school to 3-peat since the 1950s-60s.
Orr was led by star senior point guard Chase Adams (16 points, 6 rebounds). His quickness gave Simeon fits at times but Orr was unable to sustain momentum.
Orr's senior frontcourt: Dannie Smith (15 points) and Raekwon Drake (13 points, 10 rebounds) were factors, outrebounding Simeon. It just wasn't enough.
Now both teams focus their attention on the Illinois state tournament. Orr tries to repeat as 2A champs and Simeon is looking to win 4A.

Simeon Career Academy's high school basketball team hasn't really been tested in-state. Even with an unbelievably tough schedule, Simeon's closest game was a 17 point win at Fenwick.
In the CPS quarterfinals, Simeon hosted Uplift, a small school on the city's north side led by 2019 Kansas commit Markese Jacobs.
It was also senior night. The seniors shined. Iowa State commit Talen Horton-Tucker continues his stat-stuffing senior season with 27 points, 14 rebounds.
It was an extra special game for Tucker who grew up on the city's North side (in Uplift's neighborhood). So both teams knew each other well.
Talen literally grew up and learned the game of basketball in Uplift's gym. Now, years later he's leading #1 Simeon against Uplift in the city playoffs...
Kenny Pittman scored 20 on six threes. Messiah Jones (11 rebounds) and junior Kejuan Clements scored 14.
Uplift led at halftime 45-43. From there Simeon started to took over. The final score was Simeon 86-77.
Detalian Brown led Uplift with 23 points. Markese Jacobs scored 21 and former Simeon player Dre Vortes scored 15.

Talen Horton-Tucker has been overlooked his entire career. He started his sophomore season at Simeon on JV and wasn't even in the team photo. He was never ranked by national scouting services.
2 years later he's leading what Simeon's coach Rob Smith is calling the most dominant Simeon team EVER, including those featuring future NBA MVP Derrick Rose or NBA vet Jabari Parker.
Note I didn't say BETTER. I said more DOMINANT. This team is blowing out everybody.
They faced #2 (in Chicago region) Curie who's only in-state loss was against Simeon in December.
Curie put up a fight but Chicago's top team Simeon cruised to an 80-63 win before a soldout home crowd (it's first of the season).
Broadcast live on Twitter via Gatorade, Baron Davis and Rachel Demita were on hand as well as Bucks' Jabari Parker (famous Simeon alum and 4-time Illinois state champ).
All season, Simeon has been led by Talen Horton-Tucker, an underrated Iowa State commit. Now people are waking up!
THT finished with 25 points, 7 rebounds, 5 blocks. Drake commit Messiah Jones added 16 points, 10 rebounds for Simeon. Simeon junior Kejuan Clements (PG) scored 11. Xavier Pinson scored 11.
Curie was led by junior guard Marquise Walker (19 points) and Maurice Commander (16 points).
Wait for the postgame comments from Simeon Coach Robert Smith about this team compared with Derrick Rose's Simeon teams as well as comments about Talen. Then players Talen Horton-Tucker and Kejuan Clements comment on the game.

Alonzo Verge (Thornton HS) was just named Chicago Sun Times 2017 Player of the Year (Chicago Area). His Thornton Wildcats collided with Chicago City Champs Simeon Career Academy in the Class 4A Thornwood Sectional Final.
In front of a soldout crowd near Chicago, Simeon threw everything they had at 6'3 point guard Alonzo Verge and 6'5 Simeon junior Talen Horton-Tucker came up big again (14 points, 9 assists, 6 steals, 4 rebounds). Simeon (28-3) won 69-52 over Thornton (23-6) for it's 7th Sectional title in 8 years.
Verge finished with 20 points in his final HS game. Simeon's Kezo Brown finished with 18 points as Messiah Jones added 12 points and 8 rebounds.

Kezo Brown Lifts Simeon to Chicago City Title!

Chicago Simeon faced Red South rivals Morgan Park (19-6) for the Chicago City title (for the first time). Led by junior Kezo Brown's 26 points, the Simeon Wolverines (24-3) won their 8th Public League basketball title (2nd in a row) 68-64 at Chicago State on the city's South Side. With the win, the Wolverines return to the FAB 50 national rankings at No. 46.
After sitting out most of his sophomore season due to health issues, Kezo's performance cemented his status as one of the city's top players regardless of class.
Matching up against Chicago's highest rated prospect and fellow Mac Irvin Fire AAU teammate Ayo Dosunmu (16 points, 5 assists) for much of the contest, Kezo had his hands full.
And he got help from his Simeon teammates. Senior guard Evan Gilyard (UTEP) added 18 points including 10 in the 4th quarter. Talen Horton-Tucker scored 13 points to go with 11 rebounds. Messiah Jones added 6 points, 7 rebounds and a very timely block in the final minute.
Melo Burrell scored 15 points with 10 rebounds and Lenell Henry score 15 for Morgan Park. Following the game, Henry picked up an offer from Chicago State.

Ballislife will continue following Simeon and Morgan Park in their quests for Illinois state titles.

Simeon cruising through Chicago Public League Playoffs with Balanced Attack!

Chicago Simeon is used to being the favorite when they step on the basketball court.
While Chicago Curie was the preseason favorite team in the area and rival Morgan Park won their Red South conference this season, Simeon is rolling through the Chicago Public League Playoffs utilizing a balanced attack.
Host Simeon (23-2) defeated Farragut (12-10, who knocked out Uplift) 95-63 to advance to the Public Semifinals (to face Whitney Young HS).
Simeon's starters filled the stat sheet as usual with Evan Gilyard (UTEP) scoring 20 points. Juniors Talen Horton-Tucker (16 points) and Messiah Jones (10 and 6) added scoring, energy, and rebounds.
The balance came from sophomore guard Kejuan Clements (season high 16 points) and junior reserve shooter Kenny Pittman (11 points). Madison Lowery added an emotional dunk to re-ignite the crowd and bench in the second half.
Farragut's sophomore guard Aaron Strong had a breakout game, scoring 28 points to lead the rugged Admirals and senior Kawanise Wilkins finished with 16 and 12.
Next up for Simeon is the Final Four where they face Whitney Young Dolphins at Chicago State.

Evan Gilyard (UTEP commit) is a four-year varsity player for Chicago Public League powerhouse Simeon Career Academy. After waiting for his time to come, the flashy point guard is leading Simeon's balanced scoring attack alongside junior Talen Horton-Tucker and Kezo Brown and the Wolverines are off to their best start in memory (16-0).
For the second consecutive season, Simeon has faced Fenwick, a formidable suburban Catholic League opponent. Last season, Simeon lost at Fenwick. This season, after 3 quarters of back and forth scoring, the Wolverines pulled away to win 55-50.
Gilyard led Simeon's scoring with 15. Brown and Horton-Tucker added 14. Unsigned senior Jacob Keller led Fenwick (13-4) with 16 points and Jamal Nixon scored 13. One of the area's top freshmen, DJ Steward had numerous assists in the first half.

Simeon vs Whitney Young: Chicago Public League Powerhouses Collide!

Arguably the 2 highest profile Public League high school teams in Chicago (and perhaps the nation), Simeon and Whitney Young renewed their rivalry at the UIC Pavilion just before the holidays.
There are no more Jahlil Okafor and Jabari Parker battles (both won Illinois state titles), but there's still quality, hard-fought basketball.
Nationally-ranked, undefeated Simeon held off top ten Chicago team Whitney Young 59-52. In the end it was Simeon's 6'5 reserve Madison Lowery, better known as a baseball player, whose 17 rebounds were the difference in the game.
Simeon's do-everything, breakout junior Talen Horton-Tucket scored 17 points and junior guard Kezo Brown finished with 13. Tied at 44, it was Lowery, Horton-Tucker and Brown who took over.
Young's junior PG Xavier Castaneda led the Dophins with 16 points and transfer Javon Freeman scored 12 off the bench. Young's breakout senior Lucas Williamson finished with 11 points.

Out of Staters Make Splash at Pangos All-Midwest Camp

There was a strong local contingent of ninth and tenth graders at the Pangos All-Midwest Frosh/Soph Camp at The Park District in La Grange, Ill. A handful of players from the other 11 states in attendance make quite an impact including Corvon Seales, Jordan McCabe, and De' Sean Allen-Eikens.

La Grange, Ill. -- As the Pangos Frosh/Soph Camps have grown in popularity, participants have made the extra effort to come from a long distance in order to increase their national profile and showcase their skills in front of national scouts.

The city of Chicago is one of the greatest talent bases in grassroots basketball history and there was no shortage of talent from the Windy City at The Park District in suburban La Grange. The game used to be dominated by America's big cities, but the grassroots talent base has expanded and that was clearly evident on the first day of the Pangos All-Midwest Frosh/Soph Camp.

Some of Saturday's standouts emerged from places such as Eldridge, Iowa, Kaukauna, Wis., Greenfield, Wis., Southfield, Mich., and Williston, N.D.

One of the gems uncovered at the camp was 6-foot-2 sophomore (2018) point guard Corvon Seales of North School (Eldridge, Iowa). Seales didn't come in with the national reputation of some of the camp's top players, but clearly displayed the talent level to one day be one of the most sought-after 2018 talents in the Midwest. Seales can push the ball in the open court and does a good job of setting his feet and getting under his jump shot. He also is an excellent athlete, which translates nicely for him on the defensive end. Seales also has a nice feel on offense with regards for when to attack or shoot the jump shot.

Seales resembles and has a similar style to current 2016 McDonald's All-American candidate De'Aaron Fox. While he doesn't quite play to that level just yet, that is the target for the unassuming Seales.

Some of the campers who came in with much bigger reputations than Seales who played up to par included 5-foot-10 2018 prospect Jordan McCabe of Kaukauna (Kaukauna, Wis.) and 6-foot-6 2018 prospect De' Sean Allen-Eikens of Williston (Williston, N.D.).

It will be hard to find a more confident prospect among the 180 than McCabe, who keeps defenders honest with his ability to distribute, run offense or stroke the outside shot. McCabe also does an excellent job of keeping his dribble alive and finishing defenders off with the use of his crossover. McCabe also has the whip-ahead pass in his arsenal which he can deliver cross court. If he keeps growing physically, McCabe will become an excellent college table setter.

Allen-Eikens was named to the 10-player 2014-15 freshmen all-american team by GrassrootsHoops.net for Williston High School after turning out the Pangos All-Midwest Camp last October and didn't disappoint of the first day this year. Allen-Eikens is the most physically imposing player at camp and no one player can stop him from getting the interior shot he desires. He also has a good face-up first step and has a high skill level offensively. How high Allen-Eikens can rise in 2018 national rankings depends on how much consistency his deep range jump shot can develop.

The most explosive player we evaluated on the first day of camp was 6-foot-4 2018 wing Bryce Washington of Southfield Christian (Southfield, Mich.). He runs the floor like a gazelle, moves well without the ball and can score in a variety of ways. Washington also has excellent size and could become a high-major college two-guard with normal development. Washington, who joined The Family club team in sixth grade, credits his new-found dedication for the game in taking the next level as both a player and prospect.

"I came here to show what I can do and show that I've been working a lot harder on my game," said Washington, who attempts to pattern his game after Kevin Durant and Paul George. "Before I was just going through the motions when I played. I do realize this is serious business."

Windy City Standouts

Among the Chicagoans who stood out on the first day of the Pangos All-Midwest Frosh/Soph Camp were Xavier Pinson, a 6-foot 2018 prospect out of St. Patrick (Chicago), Messiah Jones, a 6-foot-5 2018 prospect out of Simeon (Chicago), Kejuan Clements, Jones' teammate at Simeon who is a 6-foot 2019 point guard, Talen Horton-Tucker, yet another player from Simeon who checks in at 6-foot-3 and is also in the class of 2018, and Raekwon Drake, a 6-foot-5 2018 prospect out of Orr (Chicago).

Simeon, the Chicago Public School League preseason favorites and a team seriously being considered for a preseason FAB 50 spot, has a large contingent of young players at the camp and Horton-Tucker was arguably the most impressive. The burly forward came to play on both ends and made three spectacular defensive plays -- two of them pocket-picks out top and the third a clean run-down block on a lay-up. Horton-Tucker also has the ability to knock down the perimeter shot.

Jones, a wing prospect who plays with a competitive spirit, also impressed scouts. He has a solid crossover, but must continue to develop his off (left) hand in order to keep defenders honest. Clements has great agility and coordination and is a fine passer, but like many of the guards in attendance tends to get a bit carried away with the dribble and looks for the spectacular play too often.

The high risk, high reward plays were plentiful on Saturday and we'll see if the guards can clean it up and take their play to the next level on day two.
