On a recent episode of The Big Podcast with Shaquille O'neal, Shaq said only 3 people have ever "dunked on" him: Derrick Coleman, Tim Perry and Michael Jordan. One of the names not mentioned by Shaq is 5'9 Nate Robinson and that's because Nate's dunk on Shaq happened during a Celtics' practice when an unsuspecting Shaq had his back turned to Nate while standing under the rim. ?Even though Shaq wasn't ready, it was still cool and ?impressive to see a guy under 6 foot dunk on Shaq.

On Tuesday (late, late) night, TNT aired the final episode of The Dunk King, which saw 5'5 Porter Maberry, who lists Nate Robinson as one of his idols, win the $100k prize by jumping OVER the 7'1 Shaq. OVER! Not on, by or near. I repeat, Porter Maberry jumped over Shaquille O'neal and threw down a dunk. ?Yes, Shaq was bending over a little?but Porter is only 5'5 - 4 inches shorter than Nate Robinson and 2 inches shorter than former NBA dunk champ Spud Webb.

As impressive as that dunk was, some felt Kenny Dobbs got robbed in the contest since Porter's 1st dunk in the event was a similar dunk - using two guys to make a 7-footer - and Dobb's had two of the most creative dunks in dunk contest history: the first was a between the legs over 3 people while blindfolded and the 2nd was dunking over a guy on fire!

And a special shout out goes to Jordan "viral dunker in jeans" Kilganon for this insanity.

The only thing I'm going to say is congrats to all of the contestants and we need a season 2 rematch - double or nothing!

PORTER MABERRY POST CONTEST INTERVIEW

Is Shaq the tallest player you have ever jumped over?
Shaq man whew! That dunk was crazy but he's the same height as a guy I jumped over in Europe two summers ago. But by far Shaq was the hardest because he is so wide! 7'1, I'm still trying to figure out how I did it.

Do you think you could dunk over 7'2 or 7'3?
I believe I can do anything my man. I'm a adrenaline dunker, so you put the challenge in front of me, I'm going to figure out how to get it done! I believe I could dunk over Yao Ming!

Was Shaq nervous about letting you jump over him?
At first Shaq kept shaking his head no. Brent Barry actually was the first one to say maybe you can jump over the big fella and he was like I don't think so. But as I kept making it through the contest he finally decided to let me do it!

Was 5'7 Spud Webb or Nate Robinson and inspiration for you?
They are my biggest inspiration. I think Nate more than spud because I grew up watching Nate. He was my idol. I wanted to be just like him in every way! I've even gotten multiple tattoos that he has and my Instagram name is HEARTOVERHEIGHT, something he started! I just wanted to bring more to it that no matter what, no matter how small you are you can make a big impact!

Give me 3 dunks from your competitors that impressed you the most
I would have to say in this order.

1. Myree dunking over the car was the craziest dunk man. I didn't think he was going to do it and for the first dunk mannnnn!!!

2: Young Hollywood's "Armageddon dunk" which is dunks between legs over a guy and dunks another ball in on with a guy holding it in on the ladder!

3: Guys dunks over the three motorcycles was crazy!

If the NBA gave you a shot at Zach LaVine and Aaron Gordon, do you think you would beat them?
Yes! No doubt. Those guys are amazing but I go out there feeling like I can beat anyone! Aaron and zach I'm ready! 2017, let's make it happen! NBA I'm ready!

One of the most epic dunk contests ever happened 8 months ago and you didn’t even know about it. The top secret event, featuring NBA/TNT production and the Inside the NBA crew as judges, showcased the best dunks from 32 of the best pro dunkers in the world- like Kenny Dobb’s NBA Jam “he’s on fire” dunk -  as they competed for $100,000!

So why was this Cloverfield Lane 10 type contest so secretive? The reason is because the contest is part of an upcoming 4 episode reality show called The Dunk King, debuting this Monday after the Western Conference Finals on TNT. Each episode will show a part of the epic contest - with dunks that will either inspire Zach LaVine and Aaron Gordon to try or make them next year or just shake their heads - and profile the aerial artists behind these video game like dunks.

And it’s these profile segments that will make you root and care for some of the artists over others. Like Myree Bowden, the 33 year old teacher and father of 5; Jordan Southerland, who will perform for the first time in front of his parents; Michael Purdie, honoring a friend who was tragically killed; Zach Jones, the entrepreneur who had surgery weeks before the event; Porter Maberry, the 5’5 underdog and so on.

Just as interesting as the dunkers and their inspirational stories are the host and judges: Terrance J, Kenny Smith, Shaq, Charles Barkley and former dunk champ Brent Barry. Barkley is notorious for hating on dunk contests and Shaq recently earned the title of Russian judge after his controversial role in the 2016 NBA dunk contest. During my interview with show creator Craig Barry, I asked what were the original thoughts by Barkley and Shaq when you pitched the show. Barry said they thought it was just another gimmick for TNT to make some money and the contest was going to be full of the same gimmicky dunks they have seen a hundred times. But it didn’t take long for the judges to realize that was far from the case. Kenny Smith, known for saying “I have never seen that dunk” during dunk contests, admitted he has never seen at least 10 of the dunks from this event.

I also wondered what made him come up with this high production event with a $100k prize (most major dunk contests from the past decade featured grand prizes between $10-20k). Barry said he originally thought about having the prize be half a million (!) and the whole idea came to him while having dinner and a few drinks with a friend, discussing the reality shows their wives watch. At $500k, I said I wouldn’t be surprised to see NBA players and former NBA dunk contest winners trying out for the event. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see some of the characters from those reality shows trying to make some cameos - thankfully they are not in it and these guys are.

THE HISTORY

The first between the legs dunk in a NBA contest was done by Orlando Woolridge in 1984: He went baseline, wrapped the ball around his back and then between his legs and dunked. The dunk was rewarded with a score of 48 but quickly forgotten.

1 year later, a high-flying 14 year old from the bay did the dunk but with a lot more height and power in high school. A couple years later, that same kid had Dick Vitale jumping out of his chair when he did it during the NCAA dunk contest. Months later, the confident NCAA dunk champ said on draft night that if he gets into the 1994 NBA dunk contest he's winning it. He did get in it and he did win it. He also did his trademark dunk which had Dominque Wilkens comparing the rookie to himself and Charles Barkley saying "it might have been the best dunk he ever saw." The dunker was Isaiah "JR" Rider and his version of the between the legs dunk was called the "Eastbay Funk Dunk."

Since then we have seen many players - from Kobe to Vince Carter to Jason Richardson - win the NBA dunk contest with improved variations of the dunk: Off 2 feet, Reverse, With 2 Hands, Over a person. Then the evolution of the Eastbay was taken to new heights when a generation of pro dunkers made a name for themselves on YouTube and across social media by doing variations of the dunk that fans of the dunk and aerial artists like Rider never imagined was possible.

On October 24th 2014, Eastbay celebrated these dunkers and the evolution of the Eastbay Funk Dunk by hosting the first Eastbay Funk Dunk contest.

8 of the world's best dunkers - from Canada to France to Poland - gathered at The Halloween Classic Tournament at the American Sports Center in Anaheim, California to participate in a the event. An event that remixed the format and rules of
the traditional contest to make dunk contests feel fresh again. The biggest change was having the 8 players split up into teams of 2. Then those 2 teams had to go through 3 unique rounds: A freestyle round, a D.U.N.K round (the dunking version of H.O.R.S.E) and a Eastbay Evolution round judged by none other than the Eastbay Funk Dunk inventor Isaiah Rider.

THE RESULTS

In Round 1, Team 1, made up of Michael Purdie, Guy Dupuy, Kenny Dobbs and Porter Maberry,  became the crowd and favorite of the judges - Rider, streetball legend The Professor and NBA2KTV host Rachel DeMita - with a set of creative dunks highlighted by 5'5 Maberry jumping over one of his teammates.

In Round 2, Team 2, made up Sir Issac, Lipek, Justin Darlington and Jonathan Clark won the round with a bunch of dunks never seen in a NBA contest including a reverse split dunk and handstand dunk by Olympic hopeful Jonathan Clark.

In the final round, Team 1 pulled off a pair of Eastbay dunks over a bunch of kids while Team 2 missed a 360 Eastbay over a bunch of people - which might have been enough to top Team 1 if they were able to pull it off.

All 4 winners on the winning team won $2,500 each and the judges favorite on the losing team (Sir Issac) was also given a $2,500 prize. The remaining 3 players each won $750 for their participation. As a bonus, Eastbay also gave every participant a pair of Yeezy 350s which sells for a "few dollars."

Aside from a great show, the fans were able to get autographs and take pictures with the players and celebrity judges.

It was a great event which just like the Eastbay Funk Dunk in 1994, will only get better and more spectacular as the evolution of the dunk and the dunkers that do them continue to push the limits of dunking.

It was dunk heaven at the Phoenix 3on3 event this past weekend as dunk legend Kenny Dobbs hosted the "King of the Dunk Game" dunk contest along with former NBA slam dunk contest winner Isaiah "JR" Rider.

The participants included recent 2015 Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown winner and "Sin City Saints" actor Myree "Reemix" Bowden, ?last year's dunk contest winner Sir Issac (with an extra inch or two on the mohawk), former LA Showdown winner Michael Purdie and 5x Showdown winner Werm.

Despite some pretty insane dunks, including Myree windmilling over a guy on a chair and 5'10 Issac jumping over a 7 footer, ?it would be 1 footer Werm who beat out the 4x Houston Rockets Blacktop Winner Sir Issac in the finals for the title.

Both Issac and Reemix will be throwing down some crazy dunks during the weekend of May 2nd when we host the 2015 Ballislife All-American Game in Long Beach. If you can't make it out, the game and festivities will be televised.

Also in May, Issac will be defending his Blacktop title in Houston - the event was originally scheduled for this month but was rained out.

Cedric Ceballos' blindfold dunk remains one of the worst dunk contest winning dunks ever and a decade later, a young Baron Davis decided to pull out a blindfold and top Cedric by attempting a windmill dunk.  Well, he failed pretty miserably and came up short...waaaay short! The judges were also waaay too generous on the McDonalds Dunk Contest Champ and gave him 6 and 7's.

After that, I was hoping we would never see another dunker pull out the blindfold but a decade later at the Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown, youtube sensation Kenny Dobbs pulled out Cedric Ceballos who pulled out his blindfold and put it on Dobbs who somehow made a between the legs dunk over 3 people - blindfolded and on his first try!

After that, I said nobody should ever, ever pull out a blindfold again.

Enter the 2015 Philippine's Dunk Contest and Justin Melton. The PBA player attempted Baron Davis' blindfolded windmill and didn't jump nowhere near as far or as high as he needed to. Congrats Baron, you no longer have the worst blindfold attempt in history.

Don't think I'm "hating" on Baron who happens to be one of my 5 favorite players ever.
