In the same gym where he was once cut from the Broughton boys basketball team, in the same tournament where he won MVP two years in a row, John Wall returned last week as an icon.

The players weren’t just playing in the prestigious Holiday Invitational, they were playing in “The John Wall.”

The 26-year-old Raleigh native, former Word of God Christian Academy star, first-team NCAA all-American at Kentucky, No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft and three-time NBA All-Star of the Washington Wizards called it “surreal.”

“For it to be in my hometown, it was great to put my name on it,” Wall said. “Every time I go back into that gym, it’s surreal. I go back to where I got cut, to that school where I played and had an opportunity to win a (Holiday Invitational) championship … and now I have my name on it – it just shows all the hard work and dedication I’ve been through and I never gave up on anything.”

Wall watched some of the nation’s top players like Tampa Catholic’s (Fla.) Kevin Knox, Cannon School’s (Concord) Jairus Hamilton and Hillcrest Prep’s (Ariz.) DeAndre Ayton.

Wall caught their eyes, too.

“John Wall stayed and watched us,” said Ayton, who is ranked as ESPN’s No. 1 senior in the nation. “That’s so crazy; we’re so lucky.”

Wall plans to be a mainstay in the North Carolina basketball scene. He has his own AAU club, Team Wall, and he wants to continue to be involved with it long after his NBA career is over.

For Wall, a player who went from unknown to the No. 1 recruit in the nation in a few months, it all comes down to giving kids the chances he was given.

“Yeah, that’s my goal, man. I think just me making it where I made it from, that gives a lot of kids hope,” Wall said. “Now I have the opportunity to have an AAU team and have a holiday tournament and have these kids come and play in it and show everybody that you can make it out, it’s just about the steps you have to take and the direction you really want to go.”

When Wall played in the Holiday Invitational in the late 2000s, his Word of God teams were always the last game of the night and long lines of fans had to be turned away as Holliday Gym reached capacity hours before Wall took the court.

On Thursday, Wall was again drawing long lines. Fans waited to approach him, but he took a picture with anyone who asked.

Kevin Knox is rated the no. 7 senior in the country and showed his dominance this weekend as his Tampa Catholic team traveled to the #HoopState for the John Wall Holiday Invitational. On the first night, it took a 38 point effort along with a game winning three to lift his team over Cary High School. The second matchup has them pitted against VCU commit Lavar Batts and Jay M Robinson out of Concord, NC. Tampa Catholic was able to win that game and advance to the championship to face no. 1 ranked senior in the country, DeAndre Ayton. Though Hillcrest ultimately won the game, Knox was faced with early foul trouble which limited his minutes in the first half. Despite finishing second in the tournament, Knox was named Most Outstanding Player. His play drew the likes of John Calipari, Roy Williams, and Duke assistants Jeff Capel and Jon Scheyer to be in attendance. Knox currently has a final 5 of UK, Kansas, Florida State, Duke, and UNC. Top 10 senior in the country Kevin Knox had Holliday Gymnasium buzzing on Day 1 of the John Wall Holiday Invitational as he led all scorers with 38 points, but it was his last basket that would be the most memorable. After seeing themselves trail for a majority of the game, Tampa Catholic finally took the lead in the last minute of the game before Kyle Gensler hit the go-ahead 3 pointer with 15 seconds left in regulation. After a missed attempt by Tampa Catholic, Gensler found himself at the line once again to try and seal the deal. Unfortunately, after hitting the first free throw to put the Imps ahead by 2, Gensler's second attempt came off the rim as Knox dribbled from 3-point line to 3-point line and banked in the game-winner as time expires. Tampa Catholic will advance to the next round of the John Wall Holiday Invitational to face the winner of Thornlea/J.M.Robinson.

Tonight was the opening night at the Culligan's City of Palms held in Ft. Myers, Florida. The annual pre-Christmas tourney brings in the best of the best when it comes to high school basketball and they didn't dissapoint this year. Night 1 gave us a treat as Coach K and staff were courtside for 2017's Trevon Duval and Kevin Knox. The Blue Devils are currently on the final list for both recruits and Coach K is looking for his new star. Knox was first in action as his Tampa Catholic team defeated East St. Louis and Illinois committ, Jeremiah Tilmon. Knox recorded 29 points in the win, showing his versatily from all over the floor. In the primetime game of the night, IMG Academy took on Mariner High School and it wasn't even a contest. Sporting a lineup with 3 nationally ranked players, IMG got off to a quick start and never looked back. In a blowout win, Duval was able to register 16 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals in the contest. Kevin Knox Jr. is a 6'9" small forward from Tampa, Florida and considered one of the top seniors in the class of 2017. LOADED Team Harden adidas Nations Favorites!

With the summer grassroots season winding down, many of the nation's elite players are looking to end it on a high note at adidas Nations. It will take a monster effort for one of the eight other teams to knock of Team Harden 2017. That team is about as loaded as any ever at this event and may be the most loaded grassroots or high school-oriented team we've seen since the 2007 McDonald's All-American West team. The group of seniors-to-be is 4-0 so far and are the favorites to win the event on Monday afternoon. Can anyone knock them off?

There is a plethora of NBA scouts and national grassroots basketball media at the Next Level Sports Complex in Garden Grove, Calif. to watch elite high school and college players close out the summer on a high note at adidas Nations.

Team Harden, a group of 2017 prospects, is getting most of the attention from scouts among the high school teams -- and for good reason. As far as grassroots basketball and national all-star teams are concerned, it might be the most talented team we've seen the last 10 years. Just check out the names on this roster: Hamidou Diallo, Gary Trent Jr., Troy Brown Jr., D.J. Harvey, Trevon Duval, Kevin Knox, Wendell Carter, DeAndre Ayton, P.J. Washington, Jaylen Hands, and Makai Ashton-Langford. Seven or eight in that group will be selected for the 2017 McDonald's All-American Game.

It's ironic because Harden played on the last team we can vividly remember more talented than this one -- the 2007 McDonald's All-American West unit that played at Freedom Hall in Louisville and was coach by current Taft (Woodland Hills, Calif.) coach Derrick Taylor. That team was so loaded Harden, who would eventually develop into the No. 3 of the 2009 NBA Draft, really couldn't get much playing time in the scrimmage or the game. Current NBA all-star forward Blake Griffin, the No. 1 pick of that same draft, turned heads in the scrimmage with his play but he too couldn't crack Taylor's starting lineup. The starters for the game were 2011 NBA MVP Derrick Rose at the point, Eric Gordon at the two, Michael Beasley at the three, Kevin Love at the four and Cole Aldrich at the five.

Four of those starters were among the top seven picks of the 2008 NBA Draft and a few off Team Harden will likely go high in the 2018 NBA Draft. The team is 4-0 so far at adidas Nations, pulling out four competitive wins, including a 101-83 victory over Team Wiggins 2018. The game was close until the older unit pulled away in the fourth period. After leading by six points (75-69) entering the fourth, Team Harden was able to get gain an advantage on the break, as Diallo, Washington, Duval and Harvey scored on a variety of easy transition buckets , including some rim-rattling dunks. Doing a majority of the setup was Brown, Hands and Duval, who led Team Harden with eight assists.

Ayton, who is arguably the top overall prospect in the 2017 class, led six Team Harden players in double figures with 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field. Ayton has stated Kansas, Arizona and Kentucky are his three finalists, but there are growing legions of scouts and NBA personnel that don't feel he'll play a minute in college. He's one of the early candidates to be taken as the No. 1 pick in the 2018 Draft, so it will be interesting to see where he ends up after his senior season of high school. Ayton had 12 points, eight rebounds and two steals in a 97-86 win over Team Asia Pacific on Saturday morning and opened play with a 19-point, 15-rebound performance in a 92-87 win over Team Rose 2017. On Sunday morning, he took over with his rebounding and passing in the fourth quarter of a 104-89 win over Team Canada and finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds.

Ayton and Zion Williamson, a 6-foot-7 2018 prospect out of Spartanburg Day School (Spartanburg, S.C.) who is playing for Team Wiggins, have been the two best players we've observed through pool play at this event.

Duval made 3-of-5 three-pointers and 7-of-9 field goals good for 24 points in the win over Team Asia Pacific continues to state his case as the best lead guard in the 2017 class, although he sat out Sunday morning's game. Trent (22 points) and Diallo (21 points) also played well in the victory over Team Rose 2017. In reality, however, any player on the roster has the ability to step up and dominate. It's just a matter of managing playing time (not to mention egos) and finding the right combination for this team to take home the team title once pool play is done on Sunday afternoon and championship play begins Sunday night. The championship game is slated for Monday at Cerritos College (9 pm ET, ESPNU).
