DALY CITY, Calif. -- Spanish sensation Ricky Rubio still managed to get his first taste of NBA-caliber competition during the lockout.

Rubio played Sunday night in the Drew Gooden Make-A-Wish Charity Game at the Cow Palace.

The Minnesota Timberwolves point guard showed off passing skills, a nice long-range shot and even some humor during the game that raised $10,000 for Gooden's favorite cause.

Rubio was on the losing side but it really didn't matter. Both teams played as if they weren't keeping score. For the record, the White team, which featured California product Leon Powe and former Warriors player Al Harrington, won 117-92.

"It's fun to play with NBA players," Rubio said. "It should make it easier when we come back to play."

Rubio, who signed with the Timberwolves in June, still has the option to return to Spain, where he became the youngest player on a roster of the Spanish ACB League at age 14 in 2005.

"I'm going to stay here for a while to see if we'll play," Rubio said. "I can always go back to Spain. So I know I will be playing basketball somewhere this season."

Rubio drilled a 3-pointer on his first attempt and executed a perfectly timed alley-oop pass with DeMar DeRozan for a backdoor slam.

DeRozan also had the best dunk of the night with a monster slam. Joakim Noah, unofficially, produced the most slams and James Harden recorded the most ingenuous slam.

The teams played four, 10-minute quarters with a 15-minute halftime that was entertaining as the game itself.

At one point in the second half, Rubio gave the ball to a fan, asking him to inbound it for him. Players subbed into the game during play, ala hockey's shift change.

DeRozan and Gooden attempted full-length of the court shots during halftime and the game was stopped twice for an on-court shooting contest.

Originally scheduled to be played at the University of San Francisco, the game was switched to the Cow Palace at the last moment. Cow Palace Rentals and Operations Officer Diana Colvin said a concert, originally scheduled for Saturday night, was canceled, making it easier to transform the venerable arena into a basketball configuration.

After yesterday's marathon 15-hour negotiations taking both parties in to the late night/morning, negotiations broke off today after 7? hours.

“I must say, it’s good to see you at a rational hour,” Stern said during the press conference after last night's talks broke off at 3 a.m Eastern time. Talks are scheduled to resume tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.

After a long day yesterday, there is no surprise the talks broke off a little earlier.

"We've been here all day," said NBA Player's Association Executive Director, Billy Hunter. "We've made little progress. I think everybody is pretty wiped out after last night. What we've decided to do is recess the process until tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. We're going to reconvene and hopefully spend as much time as we possibly need in hopes of getting a deal."

The prospect of an NBA season in the near future look promising after comments from David Stern. Responding to a question from TNT/NBA.com's David Aldridge, Stern said that he has an idea of what the deal may look like.

Billy Hunter also said that he thinks they are within "striking distance" of a deal. Stern also mentioned that it would be considered a "failure" if a deal doesn't get done in the next few days.

There are finally signs of optimism that we'll see NBA basketball in the near future. Journalist Wendell Maxey tweeted that his source has "been told by a few teams that they expect to be ready to roll by Nov 1st."

Keep your fingers crossed, basketball fans. Although signs are finally looking good, no deal has been done yet and until then we will all be playing the waiting game.

I’ll admit it, Carolina fans. When I drove down to Chapel Hill from Washington, DC, to write the cover story, I had to make a pit stop in Durham. I had to see Cameron. I was too much of a college basketball junkie not to check it out.

I double parked the car, put the blinkers on and then walked inside the arena. I roamed the court, sat in the bleachers and ogled the trophy case.

After about 30 minutes there, I jumped back in the car and drove to Chapel Hill. I perused the campus bookstore (there are Carolina-blue Jordan slippers for babies!), lost myself in the basketball museum and then reached the Smith Center.

Federal mediator, George Cohen, who has been present in meetings the past few days, said negotiations would resume tomorrow at around 2 p.m. Eastern.

"The discussions have been direct and constructive, and as far as we are concerned, we are here to continue to help assist the parties to endeavor to reach an agreement," Cohen said.

Cohen was the only person to speak to the media. Representatives from both sides of the negotiations refused to comment after advice from Cohen.

Ken Berger of CBSSports.com reported that?Cohen "shed no new light on the status of talks. He emphasized importance of confidentiality."

While Cohen has no official power in this negotiations, he has urged both sides to not talk to the media and, so far, both sides have stuck to their word.

Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reports that sources inside the meetings have said the sides are getting closer to agreeing on the split of the BRI (Basketball Related Income) but there may be differences regarding other system issues in the proposed collective bargaining agreement.

At least something is getting done. After 16 hours of negotiations on Tuesday night, Twitter was blown up with jokes using the #ReasonsForLongLockoutMeeting hashtag. Playing Jenga was a reasonable?explanation?after negotiations lasting that long with no solid outcome.
