All playoff games in each of the 50 states are now complete and championship games over the weekend brought change to the new FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com. Newly crowned state champs in Pennsylvania are the two newcomers this week: Class 6A boys champ Reading (Pa.) at No. 41 and Class 4A champ Lincoln Park (Midland, Pa.) at No. 50. No. 5 Ben Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.) completes historic, unbeaten run to a state title in basketball-crazed Indiana.

All the state champions across the country have now been crowned and the results created change in this week's FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com. All that is left for the 2022-23 season is GEICO Nationals, which tip offs March 31 in Ft. Myers, Fla., and the State Champions Invitational,?which is set for April 6-8 at McDonough Arena at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

The highest ranked team that wrapped up its season over the weekend was No. 5 Ben Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.), which won the coveted Indiana High School State Athletic Association (IHSAA) Class 4A state crown with a 53-41 win over bubble club Kokomo (Ind.). The game was played in front of over 15,000 people at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, with fans waiting in line hours before tip-off to get into the highly-anticipated contest.

Valparaiso signee Zane Doughty led the way with 20 points in an interior showdown with Kokomo's Floury Budinga (19 points, 11 rebounds, 5 blocks). Sophomore Mark Zackery also had a big game for the Giants with 16 points. Ben Davis led 28-17 at halftime, but Kokomo, which was looking to win its first state crown since 1961, closed the third quarter on a 9-0 run to trial 36-33 entering the final period. That's when Ben Davis responded with a 8-0 run of its own to open the final period and clinch its undefeated season.

Ben Davis, which won its fourth state crown with the latest coming in 2017, secured a final high ranking by finishing unbeaten in Indiana's largest classification. The Giants won their games by an average of 18.3 points and won 29 games by double-digits, with one of the single-digit wins coming against Kokomo (58-51) in their first meeting. In 2017, the Giants finished No. 45 in the FAB 50, but is still in the running for the No. 1 spot and FAB 50 title this season. What happens with the top five will be decided at GEICO Nationals later this week.

Another highly-ranked team that captured a state crown was No. 8 Long Island Lutheran (Glen Head, N.Y.), which captured the New York State Federation Tournament of Champions Class AA title with a 81-57 victory over previous No. 49 Archbishop Stepinac (White Plains, N.Y.) on Sunday at Shaker (Latham, N.Y.). The game between ranked clubs was close early, but LuHi just had too much size and firepower for Stepinac to keep up with.

Senior Jayden Reid had a terrific TOC, going for 20 points, five rebounds and 14 assists in Sunday's title game win after going for 23 points, six assists and five steals in the 81-52 victory over Victor (N.Y.), the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) champs. Archbishop Stepinac, the New York State Catholic High School Athletic Association (NYCHSAA) champs defeated New York Public School Athletic League (PSAL) champ Eagle Academy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in its semifinal contest, 75-70. Junior guard Boogie Fland scored 42 points in two TOC games for Stepinac. The federation TOC was played for the first time since 2019, but there is no guarantee if will continue in 2023-24.?

LuHi is not done either (as noted by asterisk***), as it is the No. 2 seed in GEICO Nationals and takes on No. 7 seed and FAB 50 No. 22 AZ Compass Prep (Chandler, Ariz.) at 4 pm ET (ESPNU) on Thursday.

Archbishop Stepinac fell out the FAB 50 this week and the other club to fall out was previous No. 24 Neumann-Goretti (Philadelphia, Pa.). It's a tough drop for the Saints, but they have to be ranked behind one-loss Lincoln Park (Midland, Pa.), which captured the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Class 4A state crown with a 62-58 victory on March 23. The Leopards, which only lost to Central Catholic (Pittsburgh, Pa.) by five points on January 14, captured the program's third state crown behind the play of Maleek Thomas and Brandin "Beebah" Cummings. Thomas, one of the best guards in the country regardless of class who finished with 22 points, scored the game-winning basket (a driving, 12-foot runner) with 11 seconds remaining for Lincoln Park. Cummings, who finished with 25 points, made clutch free throws down the stretch, including two with 0.5 remaining in the game.

The other PIAA champ to enter the nation's longest running weekly rankings was Reading (Pa.), which captured the Class 6A crown with a 62-56 overtime win over previous No. 23 Roman Catholic (Philadelphia, Pa.) on Saturday evening. Seniors Aris Rodriguez (16 points) and Myles Grey (14 points) led the Red Knights to victory. Reading, which only lost to Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) power Gonzaga of D.C., closed its season on a 23-game winning streak and captured its second state crown in three seasons. In 2021, Reading made all of Berks County proud when it finished No. 19 in the FAB 50.

Roman Catholic, the Philadelphia Catholic League champs who won the second meeting of the season vs. Neumann-Goretti, must stay ranked ahead of South Carolina AAAAA champ Dorman (Roebuck, S.C.) because of a head-to-head victory. So the results from the PIAA championships puts Reading at No. 41, Roman Catholic at No. 42, while Dorman drops four spots this week to No. 43. The top-ranked PIAA club had no trouble in the Class 5A title game, as No. 11 Imhotep Charter (Philadelphia, Pa.) downed Exeter Township (Reading, Pa.), 78-40, on Friday. One of Imhotep Charter's three losses came against Long Island Lutheran.

Another ranked club that closed out its season with a state title was No. 25 Cass Tech (Detroit, Mich.), which won the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) D1 crown with a 78-63 victory over bubble club Muskegon (Mich.). Cass Tech only lost one game in overtime to two-loss and bubble club Brother Rice (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) to finish as Michigan's highest ranked overall team.

The state champions across the country have been crowned, but the final ranking for nationally ranked clubs for the 2022-23 season is not yet settled.

All the state playoff games are in the books with GEICO Nationals the only games remaining in the 2018-19 season. State champions moving up in this week's FAB 50 National Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com are Moeller (Cincinnati, Ohio), Carmel (Carmel, Ind.) and Imhotep Charter (Philadelphia, Pa.) and three other state champs crack the latest poll. How much will GEICO Nationals affect the final rankings on April 8?

State champions in all 50 states have been crowned and the only games remaining are those involving the eight FAB 50 ranked teams competing at GEICO Nationals in New York, April 4-6. The biggest news of the past week was the crowning of state champions from the largest classifications in Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and New York.

In Ohio, Moeller (Cincinnati, Ohio) repeated as back-t0-back Division 1 champions with a 52-44 victory over bubble club St. Vincent-St. Mary, as senior forward Alec Pfriem had 19 points and eight rebounds and West Virginia-bound guard Miles McBride had 13 points, six rebounds and three assists to lead the Crusaders to a come-from-behind victory. Moeller won its fifth state crown since 1999 and was able to move up to No. 7 in this week's rankings by virtue of becoming the first unbeaten OHSAA D1 state champ since Zanesville in 1995. Moeller, which defeated St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) 72-52 in the state semifinals behind a double-double from Pfriem, will enter 2019-20 riding a 49-game winning streak.

West Virginia coach Bobby Huggins had to be estatic to see two of his WVU recruits win major state titles on the same day, as McDonald's All-American center Oscar Tshiebwe led Kennedy Catholic (Hermitage, Pa.) to the PIAA Class 6A state championship after defeating Coatesville (Pa.), 75-69, in the semifinals and needing double overtime to knock off Pennridge (Perkasie, Pa.), 64-62, in saturday's title game. Tshiebwe was the difference-maker with 16 points, 21 rebounds, nine steals, and six blocked shots, including one with just over a second remaining in double OT to preserve the victory. Coach Rick Mancino's club moved into the FAB 50 at No. 50, as it only lost one game in-state. That was against Imhotep Charter (Philadelphia, Pa.), which moved up five spots to No. 33 after capturing the PIAA Class 4A title with a 67-56 win over previous No. 49 Bonner-Prendergast (Drexel Hill, Pa.). Coach Andre Noble's club won its third consecutive state crown.

With forward Donta Scott (Maryland) and guard Dahmir Bishop (Xavier) as anchors, Imhotep has had a dominant presence in the FAB 50 over the past three years. The Panthers were able to move up in the rankings because of their overall success against a difficult schedule and for closing out the season with a victory. Although their regular season did not go as well as anticipated, Imhotep gets rankings credit for wins over GIECO Nationals participants University School (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.), which check in at No. 10 and No. 17, respectively in the FAB 50.

Another state champion moving up this week was IHSAA Class 4A state champ Carmel (Carmel, Ind.), which is up a spot to No. 15 after defeating Metro Conference rival Ben Davis (Indianapolis), 60-55, in the state title game. Pete Suder and John-Michael Mulloy led four Greyhounds players in double figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Carmel pulled out the close game to win the program's fourth state crown and only lost one game all season by two points (52-50) to Brownsburg (Brownsburg, Ind.).

Although it wasn't able to move up in the rankings, one of the most satisfying state championships of the season had to be the one No. 28 Long Island Lutheran (Glen Head, N.Y.) captured on Saturday. The NYSAIS champ defeated previous No. 43 South Shore (Brooklyn, N.Y.), 77-53 in the New York Federation Class AA semifinals, as junior guard Andre Curbelo led the way with 31 points and five assists. In the Class AA final, the Crusaders easily dispatched bubble club Christ the King (Middle Village, N.Y.) 51-31, as Curbelo had 23 points. The Federation TOC crown was especially sweet for coach John Buck's club, which lost to Archbishop Stepinac (White Plains, N.Y.) in last year's Class AA TOC semifinal game after being called for a technical foul by the scorer’s table and officials for calling a timeout it believed Long Island Lutheran didn’t have. Coach Buck and his staff unofficially proved it indeed had a timeout left, but the clerical error was not overruled or the game replayed.

Replacing South Shore in this week's FAB 50 is Center Hill (Olive Branch, Miss.), which won the MHSAA Class 5A state crown on March 8 after defeating an Olive Branch (Olive Branch, Miss.) team that spent a majority of the season FAB 50 ranked, 75-73, in the title game. Center Hill and Olive Branch split four games, with the Mustangs' third loss a 63-62 setback to Class 6A state champ and No. 37 Starkville (Starkville, Miss.).

The newcomers this week is rounded out by Hopkins (Minnetonka, Minn.), which checks in at No. 49 after capturing the Class 4A state crown in Minnesota courtesy of its 55-40 victory over Lakeville North (Lakeville, Minn.), a team that downed previous No. 45 Park Center (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) in the state semifinals. Kerwin Walton and 17 points and Zeke Nnaji had 14 points and 12 rebounds for Hopkins, which captured its second state crown in four years and its eighth since the 2001-2002 season.

Only one team in the top 10 lost last week, but it still has far too many quality wins to drop all the way out of the FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com. Once again five new teams make the FAB 50 cut, and a few that hold on to a spot after a loss because of their entire resume. Read on to see who made the cut.

By Ronnie Flores

Longtime Cardozo (Bayside, N.Y.) coach Ron Naclerio made no bones about his team's 96-60 loss to Long Island Lutheran (Glen head, N.Y.) this past Saturday at the second annual Apparel Challenge at Christ the King (Middle Village, N.Y.). "It was one of those days," Naclerio told www.ebooksnet.com.

Since LuHi was already a bubble club in last week's FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com, we considered keeping Naclerio's Judges in this week's FAB 50. At this point in the season, a bad loss can really hurt a team's ranking and we ultimately decided Cardozo had to drop out at 22-2. Had Cardozo lost on a fluke play or wild ending, such as was the case with its other loss to Queens Teaching on a half court buzzer beater while 'Dozo was missing two starters, it likely would have remained in. LuHi's margin of victory, however, means other teams from around the country deserve a crack in the nation's deepest set of national weekly rankings.

Long Island Lutheran is the highest ranked of five newcomers this week at No. 41, seven spots behind the Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.) team it previously lost to. LuHi's other loss is to Bishop Loughlin (Brooklyn, N.Y.). The highest ranked team in New York's Five Boros ahead of Cardozo is bubble club Archbishop Malloy (Queens, N.Y.).

The highest ranked team to taste defeat last week was previous No. 10 Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.), which was upset in Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) play by unranked Bishop O'Connell (Arlington, Va.), 69-65. The Eagles' resume is too strong, however, for them to drop out, as they have lost to No. 7 St. John's (Washington, D.C.) twice, including once in overtime, and have a split with No. 6 DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, Md.). The natural spot for coach Steve Turner's club to fall is to No. 36, one spot behind the Roman Catholic (Philadelphia, Pa.) club it lost to in overtime.

The week's other big loss was a 76-69 victory by bubble club Rainier Beach (Seattle, Wash.) over previous No. 11 Garfield (Seattle, Wash.) in a Metro League showdown played between Washington's top top Class 3A clubs at Rainier Beach before an overflow crowd. Seattle loves its hoops and the crowd was treated to a dandy, as Rainier Beach's Sam Cunliffe netted 25 points to hand Garfield its first in-state loss of the season against a team it could potentially meet three more times. Rainier Beach and Garfield could meet in the Metro League tournament, in SeaKing District 2 play and potentially at the Tacoma Dome in the 3A state tourney March 3-5.

Rainier Beach had a letdown after its big win, falling to Seattle Prep 70-63. Had it not lost last week, the Vikings may have cracked the FAB 50, but the more deserving team regardless is new No. 44 Simeon (Chicago, Ill.). Coach Robert Smith's club defeated Rainier Beach, 70-56, at the Hoophall West in December. Two of Simeon's three losses are two clubs ranked ahead of them in local polls: No. 37 Morgan Park (Chicago, Ill.) and No. 40 Fenwick (Oak Park, Ill.). The fourth Illinois team that is playing terrific ball as of late is No. 32 Althoff Catholic (Belleville, Ill.), which recorded a convincing 80-64 win over Kenwood (Chicago, Ill.) on Saturday and could be the one team that keeps a Chicago Public League program from winning the Class 3A state title.

Note: The FAB 50 powered by www.ebooksnet.com is a continuation of the National Sports News Service ratings that began in 1952. These were the first national high school rankings and the late Art Johlfs of Minnesota compiled them. They were compiled for many years by the late Barry Sollenberger of Phoenix, who merged them into the FAB 50 16 years ago.
