In the end, YNR got the W but you can decide who got the best of the matchup...
And when fall HS ball tips off, James Brown and Kaden Space will be trying to bring a conference title and more to St Rita on Chicago's South Side.

The best game of the day (in the Final 4) matched Team Herro vs Mac Irvin Fire 14U, a tough, talented Nike team from the Chicago area. In the end 6'6 Xzavion Mitchell (#2) was too much for Mac Irvin's defenders and Team Herro pulled away. Herro's squad went on to win the championship!

KC is led by forward Jeremiah Robinson Earl (IMG) and guard Zach Harvey. Both had HUGE scoring days. Jeremiah has become one of the nation's leading rebounders.
Mac Irvin is led by athletic wing Kahlil Whitney (Roselle Catholic), Terrence Shannon and Kansas commit Markese Jacobs.
In the end, the stars shined and Jacobs got the game winner!

The last 17U game of the night at 2018 Nike EYBL session II near Indianapolis featured Meanstreets vs Mac Irvin Fire.
Mac Irvin Fire got out to an early lead behind 2019 stars Kahlil Whitney and Kansas commit Markese Jacobs.
New to the squad was point guard Chase Adams and athletic wing Terrence Shannon.
In the second half, Meanstreets led a comeback with TONS of free throws (40!).
Mac Irvin Fire had their chances in overtime, but Meanstreets knocked down their free throws, winning 83-80!
Kahlil Whitney scored 29 points, 6 rebounds. Markese Jacobs scored 16 points.
Meanstreets was led by Brandon Newman's 19 points (12-13 FT), Arman Franklin (19 points) and Tray Jackson (17 points ,9 rebounds).

]]>Chicago has produced a ton of talented players in the past. Scouts, coaches, fans and more are always looking for the Next Big Thing. 6'6 9th grader (age 14 during freshman season) Kahlil Whitney wants to be THAT guy. Playing at Solorio Academy, a relatively new, small public high school with no basketball tradition on the city's Southwest Side, Whitney might've slipped under some peoples' radar. Ballislife was there from the start. In Whitney's first career Chicago high school game, he scored 35 points in the first half (vs Morgan Park Academy).
Averaging approximately 19 points, 4 rebounds per game to lead the Solorio Sun Warriors, Whitney began attracting more attention as the season progressed. With size, length, athleticism and versatility, we hope to see Whitney compete against tougher competition in the future as Solorio competes in a lower, small-school division.
If his name sounds familiar to Chicago hoops fans, Whitney is the son of 2001 All-City Kelly Whitney (Marshall HS), 6'8 forward who went on to play at Seton Hall.
Whitney picked up his first D1 offer from New Mexico State during the high school season. We expect many more to follow!

]]>Coming off the bench for the first few games (not unlike 2014 Marian Catholic grad Tyler Ulis - now at Kentucky), Adams quickly earned the trust of his coaches and teammates. The team played better (more together) when Chase was at the point. Shortly after, Adams moved into the starting lineup and never left.
Unofficially, Adams averaged just under 10 points, 10 assists per game for the season.
Chase displays his quickness and great decision-making ability in these highlights from his freshman year of high school from across the Chicago area. Expectations for both Chase and his Marian Catholic teammates will be even greater for the 2015-16 season!

]]>With little time to rest, Zack came out literally on fire. Check out this raw footage from that memorable first half. Hitting 11 3-pointers in the first half, Norvell finished with 53 points as the Fire won, setting a new Las Vegas Classic single game record.
It's worth noting the Fire were coached all week long by alum Jabari Parker (Milwaukee Bucks). Zack was a freshman at Simeon when Jabari was a senior. Parker won a historic 4 Illinois 4A State titles in his 4 years at Simeon.
And now after concluding a memorable AAU career of his own, Norvell looks to follow in Jabari's footsteps by leading Simeon to the 2016 Illinois state title...
As for recruiting, Illinois, Oklahoma, DePaul, Purdue, Florida State are among those who have already offered Norvell, but more will likely follow.

]]>Sharing a backcourt with high-scoring, senior transfer guard Marcus LoVett Jr (St John's commit), Charlie shared the ball on offense but also showed his dynamic scoring ability. Named Second Team All-City, Moore averaged 24 points, 6 assists, 5 steals and 4 rebounds. Unofficially, we think he led the Public League in scoring, but have been unable to officially verify it. His speed, quickness and perimeter jumper are outstanding.
Always criticized and scrutinized for his size, Charlie has started silencing many skeptics (locally and nationally). And now college coaches and scouts are taking a closer look at Chicago's most exciting high school playmaker.
Since the season ended, Moore has picked up college offers from Illinois, Memphis, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, Nevada, Iowa to go with UIC and St John's he had received earlier. Of course we expect the list of offers to grow as Charlie shows his skills playing on the summer circuit with Mac Irvin Fire. But here's a look back at Charlie Moore's junior high school season!

]]>Known for his intensity, defensive prowess, and underated passing abilities, Kezo found himself on the court, playing meaningful minutes in crunch time versus elite competition for his Wolverines team (28-4). His coaches often asked him to guard the opponents' best player whether it was senior All American Jalen Brunson (Villanova), Marcus LoVett Jr (St John's) or LuWane Pipkins (UMass).
Under Coach Robert Smith, Simeon Career Academy has become one of the nation's powerhouses for high school basketball and arguably the premiere Public school program in the nation, winning six Illinois state championships in Smith's 11 seasons with the Wolverines. And now Coach Smith and Kezo are looking to bring more trophies to Chicago's South Side.
During the season, the hard-nosed 6-ft lefty point guard (now age 15) picked up his first Division-1 offer from Coach Tim Miles and Nebraska. Expect that list of offers to grow. Kezo plays AAU basketball with Chicago's Mac Irvin Fire and is a member of the 2015-16 USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team.

]]>In the state title game, the athletic 6'7 forward led his team with 7 rebounds and his 12 points were second only to Brunson's 30. Known for his bounce and jump shooting, Smith has also grown as a defender. For the season, Smith averaged 10.3 points and more than 4 rebounds.
He made nearly two dozen 3-pointers and made 60 percent of his field-goal attempts.
In December, Smith received his first college offer from Rice. Following the HS season, Smith received an offer from Wake Forest. Expect that list of offers to grow exponentially!

]]>Playing with Chicago's Mac Irvin Fire, Chase was always coached by his older brother Drake Adams (former college player and 17U AAU National Champ himself). Drake worked for Chicago Public Schools as a Paraprofessional/counselor and was pursuing his master's degree in High School Counseling. In January, 26 year old Drake Adams passed away unexpectedly at home (from a health issue) and the Chicago basketball community mourned its loss.
This mixtape is a tribute to Drake Adams (1988-2015), a mentor and role model for hundreds of young student-athletes.

]]>Zack Norvell, Jr. had as big a freshman season at Chicago basketball powerhouse Simeon Career Academy as anyone could imagine. Last season (as an 8th grader) Norvell led Beasley Elementary to a 8th Grade City Championship (watch Ballislife video). This season, Norvell led Simeon's Sophomore squad to an impressive undefeated season, culminating in the Chicago City Title. Once the Sophomore season ended, Norvell re-joined the Varsity squad, coming off the bench to help the Simeon Wolverines win their fourth consecutive Illinois 4A State Championship. In the Argo sectional playoff game, Norvell scored 7 points to help eliminate Dusable HS, ending Dusable's Cinderella season. What made it personal is Dusable is coached by Zach's dad, Zack Norvell, Sr.!
The 6'4 Class of 2016 Guard is already catching the attention of high-major coaches with his long-range shooting, competitive nature, court vision and scoring abilities.

]]>Fans of Chicago Public League basketball appreciate Garrett's refreshing old school game, while LEADING his otherwise frenetic (and talented) team in every sense of the word. He might not be as flashy as some of the other players featured on Ballislife, but 6’4 Garrett can play. He can shoot, score, pass, and defend. He finished his high school career as Morgan Park’s career scoring leader and assists leader.
Many hoops fans don’t know that Garrett plays with a rare health condition known as sickle cell trait. In 2012, Sports Illustrated wrote about Garrett’s experience dealing with his health as well as the interesting story of his grandfather Bill Garrett who has been credited with breaking the Big Ten’s color barrier when he played for Indiana in the 1940s.
Billy Garrett, Jr. will stay in Chicago to play college ball at DePaul (Chicago, IL) where his dad is an assistant coach.

Following in fellow Beasley alum Derrick Rose’s footsteps, Ben will be attending Simeon Career Academy (Chicago, IL) like his 6’11 dad did.
Ben also lead the Chicago All-Star team to victory over the Illinois team at Sonny Parker’s annual 8th Grade All Star games held at Simeon, including in-game back to back slam dunks (highlights included).

Jahlil draws frequent comparison's to OSU star Jared Sullinger and Coach K was quoted as saying Okafor could play for his Duke team NOW!
Oakafor led the Whitney Young Dolphins (Chicago Public League) to a 4A regional title averaging 24.0 points per game and 8 rebounds per game for the season. Opponents consistently tried to double team and even triple team him.

]]>Proviso East's 6’5 junior Sterling Brown (brother of Suns’ Shannon Brown) gave 6’8 Simeon junior star Jabari Parker all he could handle, but Parker’s Simeon teammates were there to pick him up when it counted most. Parker scored 15 pts and senior Steve Taylor (Marquette) had 12 pts + 17 rebounds in Simeon’s third straight Class 4A title with a 50-48 victory. Parker has one more than the Bulls' Derrick Rose with one season to go.
The win gave Simeon their 6th state championship (IL record) and #5 for Simeon coach Robert Smith (IL record).
This game was tied at the half. Sterling Brown scored 10 of his 25 pts in the 3rd quarter to give Proviso East a 39-34 lead with 8 minutes to play. But in the 4th, an 8-0 run gave Simeon a 45-41 lead with 3:05 left. Simeon extended the lead on a vicious dunk by Parker with 12 secs left before Brown hit a 3-pointer with seconds remaining.
After winning, all of Simeon’s players (except Parker who was being interviewed) removed their shoes and placed them on the court. With the exception of Parker, the coach suspended all the returning players for the first game of next season following this incident.
Simeon and Proviso East have won 10 state championships between them. We won’t be surprised if both return to Peoria next March to add another.

The Simeon Wolverines finished the regular season 26-1 after defeating Chicago Curie in the Pontiac Holiday Tournament title game and later in the city championship game.
The Pontiac Holiday tournament is highly regarded among Illinois HS basketball fans for the quality of the teams (City vs. Suburban) hospitality of the hosts and volunteers, the diehard, enthusiastic crowds and the old-school Central Illinois gym.
