Malik & Telligence Johnson: Dreamville's Dynamic Duo is TOUGH!

There wasn't a more entertaining duo in the #HoopState than the Johnson brothers from Fayetteville. Dreamville's "Dynamic Duo" led their Terry Sanford Bulldogs to a 30-2 record and an appearance in the NCHSAA 3A State Championship a year after winning the crown in 2015. Sophomore Malik Johnson is the point guard and play maker of the two. His brother Telligence is the high-flyer and supreme athlete of the show. They'll both be running in the Adidas Silver Circuit this AAU season with Team Wall so be out the lookout for more highlights from the next up from Dreamville!

Unlikely Hero Emerges as NCHSAA Champions Crowned in #HoopState Finale

This year in the #HoopState has been unforgettable to say the least. The year started with season ending injuries to Dennis Smith Jr (NC State) & Harry Giles (Duke), both considered to be future one-and-done college players before being in a potential lottery position for the 2017 NBA Draft. Bam Adebayo, Kwe Parker and the rest of the usual suspects did their thing in the NCISAA but this finale mixtape is all about the public schools.

The NCHSAA playoffs is a 6-round juggernaut that ends with 4 divisions of East battling West on UNC's campus every March. This year's playoffs were the most exciting in recent years and a big part of that was keeping the 4th round at the higher seed, opposed to moving to a larger venue as they do for the 5th round. This season 1A was dominated by Voyager Academy, led by 7'0" Jay Huff (UVA) & senior point guard Chance Greene. Greene sliced through defenses and Huff was a relentless shot eraser. Voyager often felt overlooked and they played the 2015-2016 season with a big chip on their shoulders. The 2A State Championship game was a showstopper and Michael Taylor and Farmville Central are reasons why. As the final seconds were winding down in the Dean Dome, Taylor received a pass near half-court before throwing down an eastbay slam (between the legs) just before the buzzer sounded en route to a Farmville State Championship. The 3A state championship game had the most hype around it as defending champs Terry Sanford, led by brothers Malik & Telligence Johnson, took on Lavar Batts and his JM Robinson squad. As the narrative has gone all season, the Charlotte boys came through again as JM Robinson took home the 3A State Championship. The entire 4A division was wild: sellout games, buzzer beating game-winners, highlight dunks, hard fouls, crazy fans, the whole nine. In the end, a Charlotte Catholic team swept in and stole the show with tough play and aggressive defense led by senior point guard Josh Brodowicz.

This highlight features NCHSAA playoff action from Thomas Allen, Omari Harris, Davon Newton, Cory Gensler, Ian Boyd, Colin Molden, Trejon Jacobs, Jordan Whitfield, Jay Huff, China Jones, Chance Greene, Lavar Batts, Daniel Spencer, Malik Johnson, Telligence, Johnson, Kyran Bowman, Darius McGhee, Michael Taylor, BJ Mack, Bailey McKee and Josh Brodowicz.

North Carolina has become coined the #HoopState because of the basketball culture from the mountains to the coast. A culture that includes sellout high school crowds, die hard college fans, high level AAU basketball, nationally ranked high school prospects, NCAA Championships, number 1 picks in the NBA Draft, NBA All-Stars, NBA MVPs, relentless coverage & exposure, and most importantly; family and community. Anyone can be a hoop state but only North Carolina is THE #HoopState.

J Cole Watches Kyran Bowman Score 45 in Playoff Loss in Dreamville

Terry Sanford hosted Havelock High School in the 4th round of the NCHSAA playoffs in their hometown of Fayetteville, NC. Due to such high ticket demand, the game was moved from Terry Sanford High School over to Fayetteville State in order to allow more fans to enjoy the show. Two of the most undervalued point guards in the region clashed with senior point guard Kyran Bowman and sophomore Malik Johnson. Both of these guys traveled together with their Team Wall AAU program, however, they did play in difference age brackets. Bowman did what he has been doing all season long, dominating with his high energy and high basketball IQ. He finished the game with 45 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists while his counterpart Malik Johnson finished with 19 points and some incredible defense of his own. Terry Sanford took the win 82-76. Be sure to keep an eye on Terry Sanford for the remainder of the NCHSAA state playoffs as they will look to go back-to-back in the 3A division. Havelock (Havelock, N.C.) point guard Kyran Bowman couldn’t make the Fayetteville, N.C., leg of J. Cole’s Forest Hills Drive tour last August when the hip hop star famously surprised his hometown with performances from Jay Z and Drake.

“I really wanted to go too,” Bowman, a senior, recalled. “I figure since I couldn’t make it to his show I’d just put on a show for him.”

With J. Cole looking on, Bowman scored 45 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and handed out six assists, but fell short in an 82-76 loss to Terry Sanford (Fayetteville, N.C.) Tuesday night in the NCHSAA 3A playoffs.

“It was a tough loss,” Bowman said. “I just tried to do everything possible for my team to get the win, but we came up a little short. It’s a tough one.”

Still, Bowman admitted that putting on a show for one his “favorite rappers” offered some consolation.

“When I heard he was watching I did get a little more excited,” Bowman said. “I wanted the win, no doubt, but it was cool that he came out to watch the game. He made this one to remember.”

Welcome to the December edition of #HoopState! This month, holiday tournaments were the stage for the #HoopState's best to shine. High Point Christian and Wesleyan Christian showed out for North Carolina at the City of Palms. Kwe Parker took home the Slam Dunk Contest, while "Bam" Adebayo showed Ft. Myers how he got his nickname. The HSOT Holiday Invitational was home to yet another exciting field, headlined by a trio of UK commits (Adebayo, Killeya-Jones, D-Fox). While High Point Christian took home the crown, NC's top junior, Lavar Batts Jr. brought the show from Concord as he went head to head with UK commit De'Aaron Fox. Garner's Thomas Allen went off, leading the tournament in scoring. UVA commit Jay Huff showed the Triangle that his Voyager Academy is a contender for the 1A state title and he and Chance Greene lead the way. Fayetteville Terry Sanford, led by brothers Malik and Telligence Johnson, seem to have "Dreamville" on lock early on in the season. As a bonus, we've added a couple "adopted" #Hoopstate members. First, we've added Seventh Woods, since he's going to be a Tar Heel next season. We've also added Braxton Key, an Alabama commit after he recent relocation to the #Hoopstate! Other included in the episode are Ty Graves, China Jones, Brandon Childress, and Jalen Johnson.

HS Teammates Take Turns Embarrassing a Defender, off the face bounce followed by an ankle breaker

Let's take a break from shaking our heads at how bad Delly played in the final 2 games of the NBA Finals to put a spotlight on this defender who probably regrets going to the 2015 NTBA Summer Jam Fest.

His first forgettable moment came when J.J. Smith (not to be confused with J.R. Smith who had an equally forgettable day as this defender) channeled streetball legend The Bone Collector and threw the ball off the defenders face before scoring on a layup. ?The next forgettable moment came seconds later when Smith's teammate, Malik Johnson, broke the defender's ankles before hitting a fadeaway jumper.

All the defender could do was shrug his shoulders and put his head down. ?I don't know how he played for the rest of the game but I'm sure at that moment he was feeling like this.

Speaking of LeBron, the Warriors and bounces off the face of a defender, this gives me a good excuse to show Jason Richardson throwing the ball off the face of Jame's former teammate Carlos Boozer. ?J-Rich did apologize to the Boozer after the game but the NBA still fined him and Boozer still wanted to punch him in the face.

He did get a little revenge the next time the Cavs and Warriors faced off: Boozer had 19 points, 14 rebounds and a career-high 7 assists in a win - but nobody remembers or cares about any of that.

This mix should not surprise anyone, considered John Wall himself helped put this squad together. These boys are hungry and ready to eat!
