Under the radar no more: 6’1 Jevon Carter from Proviso East HS (Maywood, IL) is poised to have a breakout junior season.
There are high hopes for this season’s Proviso East Pirates squad currently ranked #13 nationally by Maxpreps’ preseason poll. Last season, senior point guard Keith Carter (see last season’s ballislife mixtape) led the Pirates to an undefeated regular season and a trip downstate to the Illinois state championship game.
During this fall’s preseason, Keith's cousin, sweet-shooting 6ft1 2-guard Jevon Carter has burst onto the Chicago hoops scene as a junior with his high motor and scoring abilities. He’s quick. He gets to the rim and he finishes. At the recent Mac Irvin Fire Back to School Jam (Riverside-Brookfield HS) and NBU Fall League (Whitney Young HS), Jevon Carter was scoring in bunches.
Carter currently holds offers from Kent State, Mercer and Illinois State, but expect the list to grow.

6’5 junior Sterling Brown (brother of Phoenix Suns' Shannon Brown) had a monster breakout season for Proviso East High School (Maywood, IL).

Under first year coach Donnie Boyce, Proviso East won their first 32 games. With so many talented perimeter players, Brown sacrificed his game for the good of the team most of the season before shining brightly in the state final. Led by Brown's game-high 25 points, they were 5 points ahead 3 quarters through game 33 before two-time defending Class 4A state champion Simeon (Chicago) ended the run 50-48 in the Illinois title game.
Proviso East finished the season ranked #15 in the USA (ESPNU).

Sterling Brown averaged 13 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 4 assists for the season.

Jabari Parker & #1 Simeon edges #2 Proviso East in epic Illinois state title game for 3-Peat!

2 of the nation's best public high school teams, #1 Chicago Simeon (33-1) and #2 Proviso East (32-1) battled for the Illinois Class 4A state championship at Peoria’s Carver Arena in the matchup that hoops fans had been anticipating all season.
Proviso East's 6’5 junior Sterling Brown (brother of Suns’ Shannon Brown) gave 6’8 Simeon junior star Jabari Parker all he could handle, but Parker’s Simeon teammates were there to pick him up when it counted most. Parker scored 15 pts and senior Steve Taylor (Marquette) had 12 pts + 17 rebounds in Simeon’s third straight Class 4A title with a 50-48 victory. Parker has one more than the Bulls' Derrick Rose with one season to go.
The win gave Simeon their 6th state championship (IL record) and #5 for Simeon coach Robert Smith (IL record).
This game was tied at the half. Sterling Brown scored 10 of his 25 pts in the 3rd quarter to give Proviso East a 39-34 lead with 8 minutes to play. But in the 4th, an 8-0 run gave Simeon a 45-41 lead with 3:05 left. Simeon extended the lead on a vicious dunk by Parker with 12 secs left before Brown hit a 3-pointer with seconds remaining.
After winning, all of Simeon’s players (except Parker who was being interviewed) removed their shoes and placed them on the court. With the exception of Parker, the coach suspended all the returning players for the first game of next season following this incident.
Simeon and Proviso East have won 10 state championships between them. We won’t be surprised if both return to Peoria next March to add another.

6’1 senior guard Keith Carter (St. Louis University commit) runs the machine that is Proviso East High School basketball. With no starters over 6’5, the PE Pirates are great outside shooters with tremendous speed and athleticism. Their suffocating team defense wears down opponents, leading to steals and easy baskets.
Under first year coach Donnie Boyce, West Suburban Proviso East ran the table in the regular season (25-0) and are currently ranked #18 in the ESPNU national poll.
Now they move on to the Illinois HS state tournament.
Notable Proviso East (Maywood, IL) basketball alums include Glenn “Doc” Rivers (Celtics head coach), Shannon Brown (brother of current junior star Sterling Brown) and Michael Finley.
