Stretch big man from FAB 50 No. 7 Minnehaha Academy (Minneapolis, Minn.) named 2021 Mr. Basketball USA by www.ebooksnet.com. Chet Holmgren is the first ever selection from Minnesota and will attend Gonzaga University.

There were plenty of milestone and first-time occurrences during the 2020-21 high school basketball season. The first order of business was deciding when to release "end-of-season" national honors because, as many know, the 2020-21 season is still going. In fact, in California, Washington and Oregon, the season will be going after school districts let school out for the summer. The affects of COVID-19 on high school basketball will linger far into the summer.

To be fair to players in those three Western states and the others who played spring seasons, we wanted to offer a fair opportunity at end-of-season honors. However, and the season wore along it became clear: Seven-foot Chet Holmgren of Minnehaha Academy (Minneapolis, Minn.) is a special player and no matter when the announcement was set for, the results were going to be the same with regards to national player of the year.

It was clear to the 10-man Mr. Basketball USA panel, and to most fans that watched him over the course of the past year, that Holmgren is a unique prospect and best player in the country for the 2020-21 season. Today, he is honored with the title of 2020-21 Mr. Basketball USA.

"Chet Holmgren has been the best prospect and player in high school since at least August prior to his junior year, in my opinion," said panel member Frank Burlison of BurlisonOnBasketball.com.

Watch the video below to check out and co-hosts Ronnie Flores and Devin Ugland discuss the full Mr. Basketball USA Player of the Year voting (full results below) and stay tuned for a special guest interview with Chet's high school coach, Lance Johnson, of Minnehaha Academy.

Burlison's sentiments are reflected in the final Mr. Basketball USA Tracker ballots. The Gonzaga-bound stretch big man collected all ten first-place votes, finishing with 100 total points. The second-place finisher behind the consensus player of the year choice was Auburn-bound forward Jabari Smith of Sandy Creek (Tyrone, Ga.). Smith tallied six second-place votes (good for nine points each) and 79 points overall. The third of 26 overall candidates to appear on all 10 ballots was Tennessee-bound point guard Kennedy Chandler of Sunrise Christian Academy (Bel Aire, Kan.), who garnered one third-place vote and two fourth-place votes as part of his 62 overall points.

Holmgren joins Michael Porter of Nathan Hale (Seattle, Wash.) in 2016-17 and Ben Simmons of Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) in 2014-15 as the three players in the 14-year history of the Mr. Basketball USA Tracker to earn a perfect score of 100 points on any single ballot. Similar to Porter and Simmons, Holmgren went wire-to-wire as the top vote-getter with 100 points in each round of voting results.

Last year's honoree, Cade Cunningham of Montverde Academy received 95 of 100 points in the final tracker. In 2019, Isaiah Stewart of La Lumiere (La Porte, Ind.) tallied 93 points and in 2018, R.J. Barrett of Montverde Academy tallied 98 points.

Holmgren led the Redhawks to the MHSL Class AAA state title with a 22-1 mark and No. 7 FAB 50 national ranking, which will go down as the highest ever ranking for a Minnesota team, topping last season's undefeated Eden Prairie team that finished No. 12. Holmgren played five years on the varsity and Minnehaha Academy captured four state titles in that time frame.

Holmgren was a skinny, 6-foot-6 eighth grader who played spot varsity minutes (in Minnesota student-athletes can play varsity before ninth grade) while averaging 1.4 ppg and less than one rpg. According to Johnson, he started to show glimpses of the player he is today in tenth-grade, when he averaged 18.2 ppg, 9.8 rpg and a career-high 5.5 bpg for a 29-2 team.

As a underclassmen, Holmgren teamed up with NBA-bound point guard Jalen Suggs (who led Gonzaga to the 2021 NCAA title game) and with his good friend in the college ranks in 2020-21, he was just as individually dominant. Holmgren was efficient in all facets of the game, averaging 20.8 ppg, 12.6 rpg, 4.4 apg, and 4.7 bpg (he averaged 4.9 bpg as a junior). On the season, he converted an incredible 157-of-194 two-point field goal attempts (81%) and 21-of-67 3-point attempts (31%).

Holmgren is lauded as a good teammate, put together one of the best seasons we've ever seen in terms of offensive efficiency and was hailed as the best defensive player in the country. It's been a long time since a big man national player of the year candidate has put together such a complete resume.

Holmgren is the first true post player to earn the nation's most prestigious individual honor since 2013-14, when Cliff Alexander of Curie (Chicago) was the choice. Holmgren also makes history as the first player from the state of Minnesota to be recognized as the best high school player in the country.

If history is any indication, this year's top player will one day soon play in the NBA.

About Basketball USA Tracker Panel
www.ebooksnet.com's panel of 10 experts, which includes six McDonald’s All-American selection committee members, casts its vote for the top national player of the year candidates. Each panelist lists his top seven candidates regardless of class. The votes are then tabulated on a 10-point scoring system with a first-place vote equaling 10 points, a second-place vote earning nine points and down to four points for a seventh-place vote. The number in parenthesis refers to the numbers of ballots on which a player appeared and previous rankings refers to position in the previous tracker.

We go 20 deep from five separate regions of the nation in our final Top 20 Regional Rankings. We rank 100 teams and nobody across the country ranks as many teams as www.ebooksnet.com. This season, our five regions will be released separately as COVID-19 is still affecting when teams finish up around the country. We began with the Southeast Region, which produced FAB 50 No. 1 Montverde Academy. We now move to the Midwest Region, which includes top-ranked Minnehaha Academy of Minnesota, which opened up at No. 2 in the region. Next up is the Southwest Region. Teams can still move up or down in the FAB 50, but the regional placement is final for 2020-21.

Minnesota and Michigan crowned state champions over the weekend and it caused movement in the latest FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com. There's one newcomer this week as one team from Michigan was upset and fell out to make room for the team it lost to that went on to win the state title.

It's not easy to move up in the weekly FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com, but take a loss at the wrong time and it's plenty easy to go tumbling down.

That was the case this past week for programs looking to win state titles.

For Minnehaha Academy, its run to the state title became more of a coronation, as the Redhawks captured the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Class AAA title with a dominant 80-29 victory over Alexandria (Minn.). Tennessee State-bound Hercy Miller, the son of Hip-Hop Mogul Master P (Percy Miller), almost out-scored Alexandria by himself, finishing with 24 points. His brother, freshman Mercy Miller, got the Redhawks off to a fast start with three 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 15 points in the easy win.

Minnehaha Academy was led all season long by leading Mr. Basketball USA candidate Chet Holmgren, the nation's top undecided prospect who went for 18 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and two blocked shots in his final high school game. Holmgren is a big reason why the Redhawks won three consecutive Class AA titles and four state titles in four tries. Last year's team led by Gonzaga freshman Jalen Suggs and the big man in the middle was moved up to Class AAA, but wasn't able to win an on-court state title because the post-season wasn't completed as a result of COVID-19.

The Redhawks' semifinal competition was a bit tougher, but Holmgren was the difference in a 79-58 victory over Class AAA kingpin DeLaSalle (Minneapolis, Minn.), a program that has won seven state titles since 2011-12, including six in a row from 2012-2017. Holmgren finished with 25 points and 16 rebounds. Ten players scored versus DeLaSalle, as was the case in the state final.

This Minnehaha Academy team will likely go down as the highest FAB 50 ranked team ever from the state of Minnesota. Its only loss of the season was a decisive setback at the hands of No. 3 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.). Ironically last year's team may have been better, but won't rank as high (it finished No. 15 in the FAB 50) because it lost an in-state game to Eden Prairie (Eden Prairie, Minn.). That team was the top seed in Class AAAA before the state tourney was cancelled. While this team will likely break Eden Prairie's record for highest FAB 50 finish by a Minnesota club (No. 12), the comparisons and contrasts between the above-mentioned clubs shows just how different each season is from a rankings standpoint.

Minnehaha Academy had a recent track record and played enough quality out-of-state foes in recent seasons to withstand losses and maintain a lofty ranking. That wasn't the case for the team at St. Mary Prep (Orchard Lake, Mich.). The Eaglets entered the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) D1 quarterfinals ranked No. 16 in FAB 50. It all came crashing down, however, when St. Mary Prep was upset, 58-53, in its quarterfinal contest by Grand Blanc (Grand Blanc, Mich.), a team it had defeated earlier in the season.

Grand Blanc then went on to defeat Forest Hills Northern (Grand Rapids, Mich.), 68-58, in Thursday's semifinal contest before taking on unbeaten and FAB 50 No. 44 Huron (Ann Arbor, Mich.) in the D1 state final. The Bobcats completed their fantastic run to the state crown by ending Huron's dream season with a 45-36 win Saturday night at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.

Grand Blanc, which lost to Carman-Ainsworth on March 12 and split with St. Mary Prep, trialed Huron 40-39 after three quarters, but outscored the River Rats, 16-6, in the final period to bring home the D1 state crown. Neither team shot well from the floor, but R.J. Taylor (15 points) and Timonte Boyd (12 points) put up enough points to help the Bobcats end Huron's perfect season one game short.

Although St. Mary Prep split with Grand Blanc, it had to drop all the way out of the FAB 50 to make room for the Bobcats, which check in at No. 36. Not only were the Bobcats able to avenge one of their losses against a FAB 50 ranked foe, they were able to beat another one in the state title game.

The nature of Huron's only loss means it drops two spots in this week's rankings. It's a tough break for St. Mary Prep, but since its loss came in the quarterfinal there was just no room for a third Michigan team to stay in the rankings. There is also the factor of considering Catholic Central (Grand Rapids, Mich.) for the FAB 50 after that program won the MHSAA D2 state crown with a 20-0 record. That team was seriously considered for a FAB 50 spot and would be in front of St. Mary Prep in the pecking order of teams from the Midwest Region.

Huron, Catholic Central and other teams also may not be done moving out or moving in the FAB 50 depending on what transpires among teams still playing its basketball season as a spring sport because of COVID-19 related delays.

As a follow up to the preseason FAB 50, we go 20 teams deep from five separate regions of the nation. Preseason No. 1 ranked teams by region are Paul VI (East), Montverde Academy (Southeast), La Lumiere (Midwest), Sunrise Christian Academy (Southwest) and Bishop Gorman (West). Nobody across the country ranks as many teams as the FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com.

Jalen Suggs has established himself as one of the top high school basketball players in the Class of 2020 nationally. What many don't know is he's also an elite football player.
Having grown up in an athletic family in the Minneapolis area, Jalen is a star quarterback who as a sophomore has already received high major Division 1 offers to play college football.
His early basketball offers include Minnesota, Wake Forest, UCLA, Arizona State, Iowa, Iowa State, Marquette, Memphis, UNLV, Baylor and more!
Suggs is perhaps the best 2-way high school basketball player we've seen this season!
The ultra-athletic guard, Suggs finished with 14 points in limited minutes in the 85-62 blowout vs Highland Park. Everyone on the team got in on the action!
Terry Lockett led Minnehaha with 20 points. Big JaVonni Bickham added 12.
8th grade phenom Prince Aligbe scored 7 points off the bench including an emphatic dunk.
Lorenzo Smith scored 9 and Kaden Johnson scored 8 for Minnehaha.
St Paul Highland Park never got on track shooting-wise. Perhaps that was due to Minnehaha's stifling defense?
#2 Evan Brodtman, #24 Mustafa Aden, and #32 Abdalla Mohamed each scored 15 points for the Scots.
Check out these raw highlights from Minnehaha Academy's game versus St Paul Highland Park High School!
And check out the postgame interview with Jalen Suggs about balancing his football and basketball.
