]]>The top senior and junior in Wisconsin went head to head before Baldwin exited early with an ankle injury. Trimble finished with 35 points! But the visiting Hamilton squad picked up their star and got the 71-63 road win.
You'll see why Trimble already has offers from Iowa State, Arizona State, TCU, USC amd UW Milwaukee (coached by Patrick Baldwin Jr's dad Patrick Baldwin).
Check out these highlights courtesy of @IsaacDennis_2 from @MovementHoops for Ballislife. Stay tuned for more Wisconsin high school basketball highlights this season!

]]>2019-20 Mr. Basketball USA: Cade Cunningham, Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) 6-7 PG Sr.
The Oklahoma St.-bound big guard is now officially Montverde Academy’s third National Player of the Year choice in the last six seasons, joining R.J. Barrett (2018) and Ben Simmons (2015). He’s also the fourth Mr. Basketball USA coached by Montverde Academy’s Kevin Boyle, who coached Michael Kidd-Gilchrist at St. Patrick (Elizabeth, N.J.) in 2010-11 before leaving for the Florida boarding school that he helped transform from a national power into a worldwide brand that has captured five FAB 50 titles since in the past eight seasons.
Cunningham might have the most modest individual statistical output of Mr. Basketball USA in recent memory, but that alludes more to his team’s dominance than any perceived individual shortcoming. Cunningham was first in scoring (13.9 ppg) and assists (6.4 apg) for a 25-0 Montverde Academy club that is being compared to a select group of all-time great clubs in the annals of high school basketball. Only one of the Eagles’ opponents (FAB 50 No. 5 IMG Academy of Florida) played them within 20 points, as they won each game by an average of 38.9 ppg.
Cunningham, a Texas native, controlled the game’s tempo with his strong ball-handing, timely shot-making and ability to encourage unselfish play, as seven players on the club averaged between 8.3 ppg and 13.9 ppg. Two teammates earned national player of the year recognition from the Mr. Basketball USA Tracker panel: Florida St-bound forward Scottie Barnes (who finished No. 5 in the balloting) and North Carolina-bound big man Day’Ron Sharpe, who finished tied for No. 15 in the final Mr. Basketball USA balloting. Barnes was third on the team in scoring (11.6 ppg), second in rebounding (6.5), second in assists (4.6 apg) first in deflections (1.7 dpg), and first in steals (1.9 spg) while Sharpe posted norms of 12.1 ppg and 7.3 rpg.
Cunningham is one of the best big high school guards to come down the pike in many years and is the first ever Mr. Basketball USA selection to commit to play at Oklahoma St. His coach compares him favorably to retroactive Mr. Basketball USA honorees Jason Kidd (1992) and Oscar Robertson (1956) and he is an early candidate to be top three selection in the 2021 NBA Draft.

2020 National Junior of the Year: Patrick Baldwin Jr., Hamilton (Sussex, Wis.) 6-8
From a recruiting standpoint, there is still plenty of debate at the top of the 2021 class and plenty to be decided, but there is no doubting Baldwin’s ability, consistency and production. He’s been named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-State team three times and has been a first team A.P. all-state selection the past two seasons. The smooth 6-foot-8 forward was one of two unanimous choices, along with AP Player of the Year Johnny Davis of La Crosse Central, after averaging 24.3 ppg, 10.8 rpg, 4.2 apg, and 1.7 blocks. Baldwin has upped his scoring average each season, from 16 ppg to 18.4 ppg, while his rebound and assists numbers climbed as well.
The son of UW-Milwaukee coach Patrick Baldwin led his team to a 22-3 mark and into the sectional finals against highly-regarded Brookfield Central, but that’s where the season ended as the WIAA didn’t finish its state tournament as a result of COVID-19. The Greater Metro Conference Player of the Year, Baldwin was also named Gatorade State Player of the Year. He’s the first player from Wisconsin to earn top honors among juniors dating back to the 1966-67 season.

2020 National Sophomore of the Year: Emoni Bates, Lincoln (Ypsilanti, Mich.) 6-8 F
There wasn’t any question whether or not the 6-foot-8 forward was going to take home top honors among tenth-graders; the suspense is whether or not he will be the first sophomore since LeBron James in 2001 to earn first five Elite All-American honors. Already the 16-year old prodigy has been named Gatorade National Player of the Year, the first-ever sophomore to earn that athletic-academic based honor since its inception for the 1985-86 season. After averaging 28.7 ppg and 10.2 rpg as a freshman, Bates upped his scoring output to 32.3 ppg, while adding 9.0 rpg, 3.0 apg and 2.1 spg for a 19-3 team that advanced to its district title game. Despite being the attention of opposing defenses, Bates shot 50 percent from the field and 37 percent from 3-point range for a team that was seeking its second straight MHSAA D1 state crown before COVID-19 concerns ended its run.
For the second consecutive year, Bates was named AP D1 State Player of the Year and Gatorade State Player of the Year and could join the likes of Magic Johnson (Lansing Everett) and Chris Webber (Detroit Country Day) as one of the best prospects the state of Michigan has ever produced. He’s the state’s first Gatorade National Player of the Year since Flint Northwestern’s Kelvin Torbert in 2000-01 and the state’s first tenth-grade honoree since Josh Jackson (Detroit Consortium College Prep) in 2014.

2020 National Freshman of the Year: DJ Wagner, Camden (N.J.) 6-2
Makes history as the first father-son combo to earn this honor, as his father, Dajuan Wagner, was the 1998 choice out of Camden High School as well. D.J.’s father went on to earn class player of the year as a sophomore and was named Mr. Basketball USA in 2000-01. Similar to Californian Mikey Williams, Wagner came into high school with plenty of fan-fare and lived up to the advanced billing, averaging 18.5 ppg along with 2 rpg and 1.5 apg. Williams had bigger numbers, but the main difference was Wagner played against tougher competition and got better results, as “The High” went 29-1 and finished No. 18 in the FAB 50. Behind its leading scorer and versatile senior All-American Lance Ware, Camden won the South Jersey, Group 2 crown and its final 25 games before COVID-19 concerns ended its run at the New Jersey TOC title. Wagner, a consistent scorer whose single-game season high was 32 points, is the first New Jersey freshman to earn this honor since big man Dakari Johnson of St. Patrick of Elizabeth in 2011.

2020 National Coach of the Year: Thomas Ryan, Dorman (Roebuck, S.C.)
The Cavaliers were supposed to dominate in-state does and did just that, and a whole lot more, after opening up No. 39 in the preseason FAB 50. Ryan’s club made history in winning its fourth consecutive SCHSL Class 5A state crown with a dominant 65-46 victory over Dutch Fork (Irmo, S.C.). Dorman matched the feat of Calhoun County (Matthews, S.C.) in 2006-09 for most consecutive state titles in the modern era. Along the way, Doman captured the Chick-fil-A Classic and became the first South Carolina team to win the Beach Ball Classic since 1986 (Eau Claire) while compiling a 30-1 record and No. 10 FAB 50 finish. The Cavs’ only loss was to No. 9 Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.)
A former standout at Lexington High School (S.C.), Ryan just completed his 13th season with the Cavaliers after six at Aiken (S.C.). Although his team captured another SCHSL title, his program was one of many nationally affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Cavs could have moved up in the final FAB 50 as they received an invite to play in GEICO Nationals, originally slated for New York City. When the crisis worsened in the Big Apple, the event was actually going to be hosted by Dorman, but it eventually had to be scrapped. Under Ryan’s leadership, Dorman is now 84-4 vs. in-state competition during its run of state championships and he is the first coach from the Palmetto State to earn this national honor dating back to 1969-70.

]]>The post Ahamad Bynum COOKS at Pangos All-Midwest!?Patrick Baldwin 2x MOP! appeared first on www.ebooksnet.com.
]]>
There is plenty of difference between a shot taker and a shot maker and Ahamad Bynum certainly qualifies as the latter. The sophomore from traditional FAB 50 power Simeon (Chicago) has never met a shot he didn't think he could make, nor one he couldn't make. Bynum displayed that during the Pangos All-Midwest Frosh/Soph Camp Top 30 Cream of the Crop all-star game at The Park District (La Grange, Ill.). Bynum doesn't lack for confidence and will keep firing until someone can effectively slow him down. That didn't happen at this two-day event, as the nephew of former Crane (Chicago) standout, NCAA Final Four participant (Georgia Tech) and NBA player Will Bynum imposed his scoring will on the opposition.
Bynum is stronger than he appears and has a wide variety of weapons in his offensive arsenal. It's not the fact that Bynum takes shots, it his ability to hit from a variety of spots that is his true calling card and impact on the game. Deep three, step back, right side, left side, blow by, crossover, pull up and floater, Bynum has it all. He'll need to play with controlled confidence and that killer instinct to help the Wolverines keep pace with rival Whitney Young in the Chicago Public League and Bellville West in the quest for the Illinois Class 4A state crown.
Bynum led the way for the White club to victory in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 game with 30 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field. He hit six 3-pointers from various spots on the floor in eight attempts and also had a steal and a shot block in the second half with the game in the balance in an eventual 85-79 victory over the Black club. The White club led 46-35 after Anton Brookshire of Kickapoo (Springfield, Mo.) nailed an off-balance buzzer-beating 3-pointer right at intermission (two 20-minute halves). The 6-foot-2 sophomore (2021) point guard was one of the standouts for the winning White team and breakout performers at camp. Brookshire knows how to initiate offense, shoots the outside shot with consistency and has a knack for being around the ball. He finished the contest with 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Other standouts for the White club were 6-foot-7 freshman (2022) forward Jalen Washington of Westside (Gary, Ind.), who displayed a high activity level, nailed a 3-pointer and finished with nine points, and 6-foot-6 freshman Khamari Lands of FAB 50 mythical national title contender La Lumiere (La Porte, Ind.). Lands, one of the most highly-regarded 2022 prospects to emerge nationally (so far), is a gifted scorer. He contributed seven points to his team's victory.
Setting the pace for the Black club was 6-foot-9 sophomore Patrick Baldwin, a do-it-all forward from Hamilton (Sussex, Wis.), who is making it difficult with each passing day to consider anyone else the No. 1 prospect in the national 2021 class. He was effective in the open court by getting out in front of with the ball, finding lanes and with his passing ability. Baldwin also uses an effective face up triple threat game and can operate comfortably on the block. He finished with 11 points, including two 3-pointers, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Bynum's new high school teammate, 6-foot-2 freshman Jaylen Drane, showed why coach Robert Smith has to be happy about his backcourt situation for the next three years at Simeon. Drane can really cover ground with his dribble penetration, can slither through small gaps and score from various angles and uses his long arms to get his hands on loose balls or pick-pocket ball-handlers. In fact, Drane made such an impression that he has to be considered one of the very best freshman point guards we've seen through three frosh/soph camp stamps with the New Jersey/Philadelphia stop upcoming. Drane finished with 17 points, five assists and five steals for the Black club
One of the campers who used the Cream of the Crop game to evaluate his standing at this camp was the Black club's Chase Courbat, a 6-foot-9 sophomore forward from Cedar Falls (Iowa). He played well during camp games and was a deserving all-star selection, but his activity level and performance in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 game was off the charts. Courbat was finishing strong around the rim while displaying soft touch in traffic. He also crashed the boards with a vengeance, and had at least two impressive contested offensive rebounds put backs. Courtbat finished with 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Another camper who used the all-star setting to elevate his camp stock was 6-foot sophomore guard Isaac Haney of Dora (Mo.). He was named Cream of the Crop Top 60 Game Most Valuable Player after leading the White team to a 73-69 come-from-behind victory over their Black jersey-wearing counterparts with 10 points, four rebounds, thee assists and two steals. Haney has a nice burst and change of direction and is as tough a customer we evaluated. He even took a clean charge on the most physically dominant guard in the Top 60 Game: 6-foot-3 sophomore Jaylin Gibson of Evanston (Ill).
Gibson used his quickness and strong frame to get in the key and make shots and regularly crashed the defensive glass to start fast-break opportunities. Gibson had 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
One of the best passers among the 220 participants was 5-foot-11 sophomore Tyrese Hunter of St. Catherine's (Racine, Wis.). Hunter can see lanes and uses a variety of passing angles to make up for the fact he can't always see over the defense. He also knows when to put steam on it, or take something off, and can thread the needle like Betsy Ross. He went for 11 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Black club.
Overall, the all-star games were well played and opened up our eyes to some players that perhaps had more pedestrian camp game performances. A couple of other players who stood out on the camp's final day were 5-foot-11 sophomore Trey Shearer of Montezuma (Iowa), 6-foot-10 Sekou Kalle of Aspire Academy (Louisville, Ky.) and 6-foot-4 sophomore Delon Zollicoffer-White of Rufus King (Milwaukee, Wis.).

]]>The post Meet Sekou Gassama: Brings Out Best in '21 No. 1 Patrick Baldwin "He's A PRO"! appeared first on www.ebooksnet.com.
]]>The purpose of the Pangos Frosh/Soph Camp tour is to give up and coming high school players a platform to receive national exposure in front of influential individuals in the world of grassroots basketball and to test their skill level against their peers on a regional, and even national, basis.
For 6-foot-9 Patrick Baldwin, whom most respected recruiting evaluators feel is the No. 1 prospect in the national 2021 class, the Pangos All-Midwest Frosh/Soph Camp is not about exposure or seeing where he stacks up against other elite Midwest talent.
The camp is a measuring stick of his own game. A self-evaluation of sorts and something else just as important. "I really want to see where my game is at as a whole compared to where it was during the high school season," Baldwin said as he prepared for his Saturday evening game. "To come here and compete is my main goal."
The way Camp ? Should Be! Players challenging each other! pic.twitter.com/aeUO1VYF1M
— Scott/Ballislife (@BallisLifeCHI) October 21, 2018
Baldwin burst onto the national scene two years ago at this camp with a terrific performance for a rising eighth-grader, ranked the No. 26 performer overall in by GrassrootsHoops.net and setting the stage for a terrific freshman campaign at (Hamilton, Sussex, Wis.) after once again playing in the event last October.
In 2017, he was name Pangos All-Midwest Frosh/Soph Camp Most Outstanding Player and was subsequently ranked No. 1. He followed that up by earning Underclass All-American honors from www.ebooksnet.com, only one of 10 freshman nationally to make the cut on the prestigious honors squad.
"I don't stick my chest out and say 'I'm No. 1' or anything like that, but I do believe in myself and my ability," Baldwin said.
In the spirit of competition, Baldwin came to the event for a third time. Now finding someone to go against and compete with was another matter. It wouldn't have been shocking if Baldwin was heads and shoulders better than everyone and didn't find someone who could match his tremendous skill level. Baldwin is self-motivated and a high character young man, but there is nothing he could do if anyone wasn't remotely talented enough to guard him. On the flip side, there is only so much one can do if a player is just too big, too skilled and too experienced to guard.
That wasn't the case.
In his first camp game, Baldwin found a perfect test for his budding game, one that has him being compared to the likes of NBA players Kyle Anderson and Jabari Parker.
Meet Sekou Gassama, a 6-foot-10 sophomore (2021) from Desmet Jesuit (St. Louis MO). The Mali native attended this same camp last year and barely registered on scouting sheets. Sure, he had terrific size and some long-term potential, but little feel and polish.
Oh, what a difference 365 days can make.
Gassama, who watches alot of and tries to pattern his game after NBA star Anthony Davis, is a true post player with a terrific frame who can run the floor with ease. His balance and footwork are light years better than what it was a year ago. Gassama is also tough and loves to use his muscular upper body to mix it up inside. He also displays a solid shooting touch at the free throw line for someone with little experience playing the game.
In one of the best camp games we've seen in recent memory at the Pangos Frosh/Soph Camps, Gassama went to work right away. He competed and bodied up Baldwin and really made him work for his, and the Sussex High standout got plenty. Gassama tried to push Baldwin further out from his comfortable spots, and he responded by making deep jump shots and with beautiful driving finishes, including some of the left-hand variety. Baldwin also did some work on the blocks, but Gassama offered plenty of resistance. Gassama also made some baskets around the rim and threw down a powerful dunk off an offensive rebound put back that got everyone in the gym noticing the terrific matchup and asking, "Who's THAT guy?"
Baldwin couldn't ask for a better scenario: someone to bring out the best in his vast arsenal. So did Gassama surprise Baldwin (who he remembered from last year)?
"He did, actually, he plays extremely hard," Baldwin said.
"I had come from Africa two weeks before last year's camp," Gassama said. "I was not ready to do something good. The games was too fast for me, but I have worked really hard to get ready for this year."
The Mali native is playing with a heavy heart as his father back home passed away two months ago. His mother, two brothers and sisters remain in his home country. Gassama would like do nothing more than to honor the memory of his father and make his family back home proud by doing his very best here in the United States.
"Of course the basketball competition is good here, but I also like school. It's a big opportunity for me to study."
Gassama couldn't have chosen a better course than this camp.

RELATED: Pangos Midwest All-Star Highlights!
Young players attend events such as the Pangos Frosh/Soph Camps to get exposure and to be evaluated by national scouts. As talent evaluators and members of the media, we stress to campers to respect the game and play it the correct way, or attempt to, the best they can. We strive to cover the standouts at grassroots events and give our audience a feel of what transpired in entertaining fashion.
What adults tend to forget at times, however, is kids still want to be kids, meaning they want to have fun and create memories, especially if free of restraint from adults. What happened on Saturday evening at the Park District of La Grange was a great example of that.
Two small and offensive minded-point guards, 5-foot-7 Kevin "Boopie" Miller and 5-foot-4 Kendall Martin went at it in a classic playground-style "battle" after "Boopie", a freshman (2021) from Morgan Park (Chicago), went through the legs, ripped a crossover in front of Martin and hit him with a step back jumper that got the other campers and crowd into a frenzied state. The play actually shut down the game after players rushed the court to mob Miller.
Before that transpired, there was a growing crowd as the two guards exchanged scoring blows while attempting to guard one another. After order was restored and play resumed, Martin, a freshman (2021) from Fenwick (Oak Park, Ill.) got the crowd going again with long range threes from near half court. Eventually the camp game got back to normal, but the buzz about the battle continued as the players left the court.
Our Take On Camp Battles
When players go one-on-one to try to out-do each other, it usually leads to zero ball movement and unnecessary dribbling, two things that generally hinder an individual evaluation. Miller and Martin are guards of small stature and need to be ultimate team-first, pass-first lead guards who play bulldog defense in order to become quality high school guards (considering both play at two of the perennially better programs in Chicago) and to have a chance to play at the next level.
The battle definitely wouldn't be positive from an evaluation standpoint, but it also happened organically, the sequence was not scripted. It's when it's scripted, or thought of strictly for the cameras and social media, that we have a problem with. The other campers and their experience has to be of importance when two players dominate the ball and a camp game for an extended period of time.
Two other major factors also need to be mentioned: Sometimes the unexpected can and will happen, as it did when "Boopie" and Martin went at it, and fans love the small guard who can handle the rock. There is just something about the small man in basketball who makes things happen on the court that makes fans go crazy.
Standout Campers
While the small guys at camp got the attention of fans and the other players, it was skilled players with a bit more size so to speak that got the attention of veteran scouts in attendance. Here are five that stood out to us:
Patrick Baldwin (Hamilton, Milwaukee, Wis.) 6-8 2021: This combo forward has a multitude of offensive skill that had scouts looking for comparisons. He resembles Los Angele Lakers standout rookie Kyle Kuzma with his body type and footwork, but his passing skill had veteran scout Frank Burlison mentioning Ben Simmons, the 2016 No. 1 NBA Draft choice.
Ahmad Bynum (Simeon, Chicago) 6-1 2021: The nephew of former Crane of Chicago standout Will Bynum (Arizona/Georgia Tech/NBA) has many of the same physical and mental toughness of his uncle. Bynum knows the game and was shooting at a high clip on Saturday.
Kamari Lands (Indianapolis) 6-6 2022: He's only an eight-grader, but oh my, is he skilled! Lands can handle the ball and usually makes the correct basketball read. He executed a pick-in-roll on the left side elbow extended with another forward that was a thing of beauty in timing and execution.
Darius Hannah (Milwaukee Academy Science, Milwaukee, Wis.) 6-7 2020: One of the best long-term prospects in attendance displayed the ability to run the floor and quality defensive instincts. His game and body frame reminds us plenty of former high school All-American and NBA player Brandon Wright out of the University of North Carolina.
Isaiah Jackson (Old Redford, Detroit) 6-8 2020: Athletic forward had two standout camp games and is one of the better finishers in attendance.
