]]>At one time, nicknames for high school basketball players were commonplace and mentioned in newspapers across the country. With the newspaper industry dying a slow death in this country, daily high school coverage is a fraction of what it used to be and nicknames doing get circulated like they used to.
There are still some memorable ones in 2020 and some unique names as well. Some of the better nicknames include Donovan "Puff" Johnson of Hillcrest Prep (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Elite All-American Carlos "Scooby" Johnson of Benton Harbor (Mich.), but this year it was hard to top the originality of Tyrelle "Fat Daddy" Hunt of Coronado (Henderson, Nev.).
Hunt, a native of Detroit who is still undecided for college, was a rather large baby growing up, hence his nickname that stuck. This season "Fat Daddy" averaged a double-double for the second consecutive year for a 19-9 team and also played tight end on the Cougars' football team.
A majority of the players listed below played at an all-state level and above, with nicknames coined while still in high school. There have been tons of nicknames given out through the years, but these are some of the most memorable. In today's political climate, some of the selections may appear a bit insensitive, but they were appropriate for that particular time.

]]>In the WIAA Division 2 Regional Finals, Whitnall hosted rivals New Berlin Eisenhower. New Berlin Eisenhower threw everything at Herro including a varsity football player. They tried to deny the Kentucky commit Herro the ball all game.
In the end Herro scored 35 points (or 34 according to announcer) in his Whitnall Falcons' 64-50 win.
This left Herro with 2012 career points, despite missing much of his junior season (including playoffs).
Next, Whitnall faces Pewaukee in the Sectional.

]]>This season, the Kentucky-bound senior is on FIRE! Opponents are throwing multiple defenders and defenses at Herro and his teammates, but Whitnall is still winning and Herro is putting up monster numbers!
According to Whitnall sources, Tyler Herro finished with 45 points before exiting with 4 minutes to go (31 in the first half) on his way to a triple-double as host Whitnall defeated Bay View 76-52 in their WIAA regional semifinal. Herro grabbed 17 rebounds to go with 12 assists!
All this happened after opposing coaches asked to face Whitnall when the tournament was seeded. You'll see both teams were trash-talking back and forth from the opening tip.
Tyler Herro made 4 3s and hit all 12 free throws. This was his 8th game of 40+ points (in 20 games) this season.
He's averaging over 33 points on the season. Next up Whitnall faces New Berlin Eisenhower who they beat earlier in the season.

]]>After picking up a tough loss versus Chicago Orr (#1 in Chicago), Whitnall had won 3 straight coming into their home opener (and conference opener) versus Milwaukee Lutheran.
In front of a big crowd, Tyler Herro showed off his versatility. He proved that he can score but he also proved his team functions best when everyone is involved. Finishing with 43 points, Tyler also picked up 11 assists before exiting the game. Whitnall won 79-68!
Next Friday, Tyler Herro and Whitnall face their rivals at home and Tyler gives us a preview in his postgame interview.

]]>After picking up a tough loss versus Chicago Orr (#1 in Chicago), Whitnall returned home to face Milwaukee Destiny.
The gym was packed. We learned that Destiny players had been talking trash on Facebook. The 1-0 Destiny squad had 2-3 defenders on Herro all night. At one point Herro crossed up 2 defenders at once making them collide. He also scored on 3 defenders.
In the end Tyler Herro scored 42 points (according to the scorer's table) in the 69-63 win for Whitnall (now 1-1).

]]>This season (his first at Chicago Orr Academy), Chase and the Spartans are the preseason #1 team in the Chicago Sun Times poll (Chicago area). Their goal is to win city and defend their 2A Illinois state title.
With Chase Adams at PG, Orr is led by returning starters Raekwon Drake, Ty Mosley (UW Milwaukee commit), Dannie Smith and excellent role players like Brian Hernandez and Emanuel Oneal.
Tyler Herro (2018 Whitnall) is one of the top shooters in the nation. The recent Kentucky commit opened his senior season versus Orr at Washington Tournament of Champions near Peoria.
In the end, Orr came out on top 83-56. Raekwon Drake was named MVP finishing with 19 points, 6 rebounds, 4 blocks. Chase Adams finished with 12 points and tournament record 12 assists! Brian Hernandez added 19 points, Dannie Smith 14 points 5 assists, Ty Mosley 11 points 6 rebounds. Emanuel ONeal finished with 9 rebounds and 2 thunderous dunks in the closing minutes!
Tyler Herro finished with 18 points for Whitnall. He had multiple defenders covering him all night.

]]>Tyler Herro and his Wisconsin Playground EYBL squad faced off against a formidable Cal Supreme EYBL team featuring Arizona commit Shareef O'Neal (Shaq's son) at Bigfoot Hoops' Las Vegas Classic.
For this playoff game, Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal helped coach his son's Cal Supreme squad.
Tyler Herro shot lights out, finishing with 30 points in what would be his final AAU game. In the end, PG Elite came up just short.
Ballislife will continue following Tyler Herro as well as Shareef O'Neal through their senior HS seasons.

]]>The early Wisconsin-commit and his Wisconsin Playground EYBL squad faced off against a formidable Ramey-Jets United (adidas) team from St. Louis at the NY2LA Sports Summer Jam near Milwaukee, WI during the live period.
Ramey's team is led by 2018 high major commits PG Courtney Ramey (Louisville) and athletic wing Torrence Watson (Ohio State), 2 of Missouri's top high school players.
Torrence Watson scored Ramey's first 9 points, finishing with 24. Spectators were treated to a high level matchup between Tyler Herro and Courtney Ramey, two of the top high school guards in the midwest. In the end, PG Elite prevailed.

]]>The fundamentally sound 6’4″ combo guard from Whitnall High School averaged 29.0 points per game last season as a sophomore (43% 3-pointers) while helping Whitnall reach the WIAA Division 2 state tournament at the Kohl Center.
Herro is regarded as one of the country’s top long-distance shooters, but his ability to create off the dribble and his proficiency in the mid-range area are what set him apart.
Currently ranked 25th in the ESPN 60, 42nd (Scout), 55th (247) and 66th (Rivals) overall in the Class of 2018, Herro has been rapidly climbing up the rankings.
A four-star recruit, Herro is widely considered the best player in the state of Wisconsin and one of the top talents in the past five years. In September 2016,
Tyler Herro announced that he would be staying home, committing to Greg Gard and the Wisconsin Badgers. He is the Badgers’ first commit for 2018.
This makes Tyler one of the most highly touted recruits in the program’s history, perhaps following only Sam Dekker?
