Fort Lauderdale, Fla., University School has been seeking redemption in Raleigh since its first-round loss a year ago.

Saturday night, the Sharks were redeemed as they toppled last year’s T.J. Warren bracket champs, Phoenix Hillcrest Prep, 71-66 in front of a sellout crowd.

There wasn’t going to be any more afternoon consolation games for the Sharks.

“(Last year’s loss) definitely played a part in us coming here,” coach Adrian Sosa said. “The atmosphere is really what we wanted … it was something that we reminded the guys of.

He continued: “We learned a lot about ourselves this week … this (championship) was one of our many goals.”

Vernon Carey Jr. was a wrecking force for the Sharks, dropping 31 points on just 12 field goal attempts.

Hillcrest Prep star Kyree Walker rose the occasion, but his 27 points wasn’t enough as he was the only Bruin to score double-digit points.

“There’s a lot of hard, broke kids in that locker room but they fought and that’s all you can ask,” Hillcrest Prep coach Howard Thompson said.

Carey Jr. and his University school team was fresh off a City of Palms championship as they came into Raleigh with a target on their chest! Although they were taken to the wire in the semi-final matchup, the Sharks were able to pull it out and win the National Bracket over Hillcrest University. Carey Jr. stated he will be cutting his list down to 3/4 schools here soon and I think it's safe to say UNC and Duke will be making the cut. Both schools had their head coaches in attendance during the tournament.
