There are only two new teams able to crack the latest edition of the FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com, but there is movement as teams look to avoid being upset right before the competition heats up in the playoffs. It looks like No. 1 Sunrise Christian Academy (Bel Aire, Kan.) will be the top seed at GEICO Nationals, whose field will be announced on March 12.

Only two teams have a strong enough resume to crack the FAB 50 National Team Rankings powered by www.ebooksnet.com this week, as a vast majority of the nation's elite teams won games last week. The playoffs have started in some selected states, will begin this week in others, while some look to avoid a late-season upset that would cause unfavorable seeding or playoff positioning.

The two new ranked teams this week are No. 44 North Hills (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and No. 50 Catholic Central (Grand Rapids, Mich.). North Hills is rewarded as an unbeaten club and as the Keystone State's top-rated team in Class 6A. The Cougars were previously ranked and have done enough to warrant a return in the nation's longest-running weekly poll in front of King (Detroit, Mich.) as Michigan's top-rated team by the Detroit Free Press.

Previous No. 37 Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.) had to drop out after losing 57-56 to unranked St. John's (Washington, D.C.) in Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) play. It was Gonzaga's second close loss to the Cadets, as coach Steve Turner's club now has to be behind bubble club DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, Md.) in the WCAC pecking order. FAB 50 No. 29 Bishop McNamara (Forrestville, Md.) sits at 11-1 in WCAC play, while No. 21 Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.) is 10-2, one game ahead in the loss column of DeMatha Catholic (10-3) and two games ahead of Gonzaga (9-4). Bishop McNamara's only conference loss is to DeMatha, who will host Gonzaga on senior night this Friday in a key game.

St. Francis Prep (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) lost in first game in New York Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) play to unranked Christ the King (Middle Village, N.Y.), 59-56. The Terriers ran into a CTK club that struggled with injuries early in the season, but is now rounding into form and is a formidable foe. St. Francis Prep drops five spots this week to No. 34 and its loss last week means a hit for other New York club. The Terriers have done enough to remain in front of Cardinal Hayes (Bronx, N.Y.) because of the head-to-head result and Archbishop Stepinac (White Plains, N.Y.), which has a split with Cardinal Hayes.

Another club that joins Cardinal Hayes and Archbishop Stepinac in dropping four spots this week is No. 22 Dr. Phillips (Orlando, Fla.), which fell to Olympia (Orlando, Fla.), 69-65, in its district championship game. E.J. “Jizzle” James, a 6-foot-1 2023 guard and the son of NFL Hall of Fame running back Edgerrin James, had 31 points.

Coach Ben Witherspoon's club can't fall any further in the FAB 50 because of its overall resume and because it played the district title game without McDonald's All-American center Ernest Udeh Jr., but the result does affect what could happen down the road. Although Dr. Phillips remains the top ranked team in the FHSAA power rankings system, it drops to No. 5 in its region behind four district champions and will have to travel to play any district champion it meets in regional play. According to Witherspoon, Udeh will be ready to play on Thursday and in a likely contest at home next Tuesday against No. 6 ranked region team Windemere Prep (Windermere, Fla.) and Duke commit Sean Stewart.

Sunrise Christian Academy (Bel Aire, Kan.) solidified its status as the No. 1 team in the country with a 74-65 victory over No. 4 Link Academy (Branson, Mo.) last Friday evening in a showcase game at the Heartland Hoops Classic in Grand Island, Neb. With the victory, the Buffaloes, this season's National Interscholastic Basketball Conference (NIBC) champion, all but secured the top seed at GEICO Nationals, which will take place in Ft. Myers, Fla., March 31-April 2. The entire eight-team field will be announced on March 12. Despite the loss, Link Academy did not drop in the FAB 50 this week and should be one of the teams invited for the end-of-season tournament for independent clubs.

Sunrise Christian got out to a fast start and led 21-13 after one period of play. The Buffaloes extended their lead to 12 in the second period, but when the game got sloppy in the third period, Link Academy capitalized. The first-year program closed its deficit to 48-44 at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

That's when Sunrise Christian's experience in big showcase games versus other highly-ranked foes made a difference, as the Buffaloes converted some clutch shots and limited the amount of mistakes down the stretch. Layden Blocker, a 2023 point guard who finished with 11 points, made critical plays for the victors, while a 3-pointer with three minutes remaining by Kansas-bound Gradey Dick (16 points) gave the Buffaloes some breathing room. Sunrise Christian also hit its late free throws to seal the victory.

Duke-bound Mark Mitchell netted a game-high 23 points, while 2023 wing Scotty Middleton (13 points) also came up big. Tarris Reed Jr., bound for Michigan, led Link Academy with 22 points, while Arkansas-bound McDonald's All-American Jordan Walsh added 16.

Check out Markelle Fultz's senior season highlights as we get ready for the NBA draft in less than 10 days! Markelle played his senior season at Dematha Catholic under Coach Mike Jones. Fultz is currently projected as the no. 1 overall pick and many believe he has a chance at being the next great point guard. Although Washington didn't make the dance this year, it wasn't because of a lack of effort from Fultz. Fultz finished the season averaging 23.5 pts, 5.7 rebs, and 5.9 assists. See why many has pegged this DMV product as "the Next One."

Fifth-ranked Gonzaga waited and waited for No. 4 Paul VI’s run to come Monday night. The Panthers describe themselves as “a 10-0 run waiting to happen,” instant offense that can be deployed at any moment.

The Panthers score in bunches behind an offense that slams the gas pedal and a defense that plays inside opponents’ jerseys.

For four quarters on Monday, Gonzaga waited for it all to kick in, to play back on its heels and cling to a Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship. But that burst never came and Gonzaga refused to yield in a 68-55 win at American University’s Bender Arena.

Senior guard Chris Lykes, the two-time conference player of the year, hit a scoop-shot layup with three minutes to play that put the Eagles (26-5) up 16. He buried a three-pointer two possessions later to push the margin to 17 points and all but ice Gonzaga’s second conference tournament title in three years .

“Even with three minutes left, up 17, I knew they had a chance to come back,” Lykes said.

“You never feel like you have it in the bag,” Gonzaga Coach Steve Turner said.

[BOX SCORE: Gonzaga 68, Paul VI 55]

But then Lykes hit that pair of shots. Freshman forward Terrance Williams made two free throws. Paul VI Coach Glenn Farello shook hands with Lykes during a dead ball with under two minutes remaining.

Lykes swung his arm around junior forward Myles Dread, who scored 15 points Monday and 19 in a 33-point semifinal win over No. 2 St. John’s on Sunday. Lykes told Dread, “We got it. We’re going to win a championship.”

Dread started crying. “We just worked so hard for this,” he said through tears at midcourt afterward.

Paul VI ran Gonzaga ragged in their first meeting in January. The Panthers (26-5) beat the Eagles in transition as junior guard Brandon Slater tallied a season-high 34 points.

On Monday, he scored 15.

Lykes, who averages 17.7 points, only had 11 points in that first meeting.

But Monday night, before a packed house, he poured in 20 to lead all scorers.

“It puts him up there as one of the greatest players in Gonzaga history,” Turner said of Lykes, the school’s all-time leading scorer.

Gonzaga controlled the tempo in the title game with reliable rebounding and unrelenting defense. Paul VI’s scoring spurt wasn’t inevitable, Turner told his team. It was preventable. “I trusted them tonight,” he said.

It paid off with another title for Gonzaga, which will turn its attention to this week’s DC State Athletic Association tournament. The Eagles split the regular season WCAC title with the Panthers, who will compete in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association tournament.

“We just stopped everybody,” junior guard Prentiss Hubb said. “Don’t let them get anything at all.”

Paul VI senior Aaron Thompson (15 points) got hot in the fourth quarter with seven straight points, but Hubb and Mike Myers responded with a pair of threes. The Eagles refused to let the tide turn.

“We decided we weren’t going to buckle,” Dread said, “ that we’d be the tougher team.”

In a big WCAC rivalry, this game showed why the conference in the DMV is often considered the best high school basketball conference in the country. A match-up between two perennial powerhouse teams in Gonzaga of Washington DC and Bishop O’Connell of Arlington went down to the wire, and had featured five players who have already committed to division one schools and countless others who have multiple offers.

Gonzaga, led by senior point guard and Miami commit Chris Lykes, came into the game 17-3 and the reigning WCAC Champs are considered favorites to repeat this year. Bishop O’Connell is no slouch of their own however, as they came into the game 15-7 with wins over national ranked programs in Norcross, Westlake and Bishop Gorman, and are led by Providence commit and nationally ranked big man Nate Watson.

The Knights of O’Connell jumped out to a quick lead behind the play of junior point guard Xavier Johnson, who’s steal and layup to beat the buzzer gave them a two point lead going into halftime. However, Gonzaga came out firing in the second half behind the play of Miami commit Chris Lykes and Penn State commit Myles Dread who were both clutch down the stretch. Gonzaga held on to win a close one 73-67 to get a big road win in conference.

The point guard match-up stole the show, as Lykes finished with 25 points, while Johnson posted an impressive stat line of 32 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Other standouts included Dread (23 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists), Watson (17 points and 15 rebounds), Gonzaga junior Prentiss Hubb (12 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds), Bishop O’Connell senior and JMU commit Matt Lewis (13 points), and Gonzaga senior and Penn commit Eddie Scott (8 points and 6 rebounds).

Rick Pitino's got him a potential pro in incoming freshman VJ King. The 6'7" guard-forward from Akron, OH. is your prototypical NBA 2-guard with a 6'10" wingspan. I KNOW, the title may sound outrageous but take these things into account before you have any doubts. First, VJ King was BORN in Akron, OH. the same city as the current "King" Lebron James. King also attended St. Vincents - St. Mary's the SAME school Lebron James attended (although he finished his career in Fairfax, VA.). With all that being said, it's hard to think of another AKRON basketball prospect that has had this much hype since James himself. To back up his Top 20 rankings King was named a McDonald's All American, a Jordan Brand Classic participant, and the 2015-2016 Virginia Gatorade State Player of the Year. King nearly averaged a double-double (22.9 ppg, 9.7 reb) in arguably the toughest high school conference in America (WCAC). Look for VJ to make some noise his first year with the Cardinals!

Markelle Fultz is a 6'4" senior point guard from WCAC powerhouse, Dematha Catholic High School. The Stags have a historic list of players that have come before Fultz such as Keith Bogans, Danny Ferry, Quinn Cook, and Victor Oladipo. This past season, Fultz was named WCAC All-Conference after leading his Stags to a 33-5 record. In addition to that accomplishment, he was also named a McDonald's All-American, a Jordan Brand Classic participant, and a member of the Team USA in the Nike Hoop Summit game. Fultz is the 6th McDonald's All American that has signed to play for the University of Washington. With his non-stop work ethic, athleticism, and size for his position; Fultz has all the tools to become a potential "one and done " lottery pick.

Last night gave us the FAB50 East Coast Matchup of the Week as the no. 7 Cadets of St. Johns traveled to face off against no. 10 Gonzaga College High. Going into the game, the most talked about matchup would be at the point guard spot between senior Anthony Cowan and junior Chris Lykes. This game was a back and forth battle as every WCAC game has been this season. Ultimately it was seniors Anthony Cowan (UMD commit) and Khalia Sykes (27 points) that help lead the way for the Cadets as they took down Gonzaga.
