]]>Ballislife has followed the big-bodied lefty shooter from his grammar school days at Beasley Academic center, from his first games at Simeon on the sophomore team, to his final games his senior season in the Illinois state finals in Peoria. There is always a lot of attention placed on Simeon locally and nationally, as one of the leading
public league basketball powerhouses.
The players receive accolades but also face a great deal of scrutiny too. Zack rose to meet each challenge. Stats don't always tell the story as Illinois high schools don't use a shot clock and many teams, including Simeon play zone.
According to the Chicago Sun Times, Norvell averaged 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists his senior season, leading Simeon to a 30-4 record (Illinois 4A 3rd place) playing a national schedule. He always led Simeon down the stretch, making as many clutch shots as anyone in the Chicago area this high school season.

]]>Winning his first varsity city title of his career 54-49, Simeon senior and leading-scorer Zachary Norvell (Gonzaga) finished with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. He led every aspect of Simeon's first 3 quarters of the game.
Feisty 5'10 junior point guard Evan Gilyard scored 14 of his 16 points in the 4th quarter including 9 straight at one point. Breakout versatile sophomore reserve Talen Horton-Tucker added 5 points, 7 rebounds.
Kenwood was led by unsigned seniors Zion Morgan, (15 points, 4 rebounds) and Nick Robinson (13 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks).
If Simeon's 7th Public league title on Sunday wasn't impressive already, it came on the heels of beating #1 Morgan Park on Friday and #6 Evanston on Saturday.
Thanks to everyone at Chicago State University, CPS, Simeon, and Kenwood for a memorable season of Public League basketball.
Next, Kenwood and Simeon will both be trying to win the Class 4A Illinois state title.

]]>Chicago's 2 top high school teams (and biggest rivals) met for the rubber match in the City semifinals. Soldout in advance, both teams won on the road during the season's earlier meetings. The winner at Quest Multisport headed to the City Title game.
It wasn't always pretty, but both teams fought til the final whistle. In the end Ben Coupet's career night (24 points, including 4-6 from 3, 7 rebounds) led #2 Simeon (22-3) to a 74-72 win over #1 Morgan Park despite 26 points, 5 assists from Memphis bound PG Charlie Moore.
As you will see in the video, the final 20 seconds were chaotic! Up 74-72 Simeon missed a FT, layup and putback but Morgan Park couldn't manage to score as time expired.
Zack Norvell added 16 points, 5 rebounds for Simeon and Western Michigan commit Jarrin Randall added 9 points on 3x3-pointers for Morgan Park. Simeon PG Evan Gilyard provided key energy in the second half.
Simeon went on to win the city title less than 48 hours later (first since 2012), but this matchup was a game to remember!
Simeon are #34 in the latest Ballislife Fab 50 national rankings and Morgan Park fall to #39.
Now both will compete in the Illinois state tournament.

]]>Over the last 3 years, Morgan Park has won 2 state titles (3a) and finished 3rd in 2015. They're currently the top team in Illinois and are unbeaten in-state this season (1 loss in Detroit). Simeon has cemented itself as a national power under Coach Rob Smith (6 state titles last ten seasons) producing Derrick Rose, Jabari Parker and more.
When they play (twice a year in conference or for city title), it's a battle. The gym is always sold-out with friends, family, classmates and fans and cameras are rolling.
Typically Simeon hosts 1 game and Morgan Park's "home game" gets moved to a larger neutral site as Morgan Park's antiquated gym accommodates only 250 fans. This season, after threatening a much-publicized boycott if the game were to be held elsewhere, Morgan Park hosted their home game for the first time in years in their tiny South Side gym.
Security was intense and the game was sold-out in advance. Morgan Park had defeated Simeon on the road last month.
This time #4 Simeon (17-3) came into #1 Morgan Park's (16-2) gym and left with a 60-57 upset victory.
Simeon junior point guard Evan Gilyard finished with 24 points (4 3-pointers) to lead the Wolverines.
Illinois Mr Basketball contender, Memphis-commit Charlie Moore (Morgan Park) scored 19 but needed more support from his teammates.
Simeon senior Zachary Norvell Jr (Gonzaga) scored 18 with 7 rebounds. Rarely-used Simeon reserve, 6'5 junior Madison Lowery came off the bench in the second half and scored a career high 10, giving his team a lift.

]]>With little time to rest, Zack came out literally on fire. Check out this raw footage from that memorable first half. Hitting 11 3-pointers in the first half, Norvell finished with 53 points as the Fire won, setting a new Las Vegas Classic single game record.
It's worth noting the Fire were coached all week long by alum Jabari Parker (Milwaukee Bucks). Zack was a freshman at Simeon when Jabari was a senior. Parker won a historic 4 Illinois 4A State titles in his 4 years at Simeon.
And now after concluding a memorable AAU career of his own, Norvell looks to follow in Jabari's footsteps by leading Simeon to the 2016 Illinois state title...
As for recruiting, Illinois, Oklahoma, DePaul, Purdue, Florida State are among those who have already offered Norvell, but more will likely follow.

]]>Zack Norvell, Jr. had as big a freshman season at Chicago basketball powerhouse Simeon Career Academy as anyone could imagine. Last season (as an 8th grader) Norvell led Beasley Elementary to a 8th Grade City Championship (watch Ballislife video). This season, Norvell led Simeon's Sophomore squad to an impressive undefeated season, culminating in the Chicago City Title. Once the Sophomore season ended, Norvell re-joined the Varsity squad, coming off the bench to help the Simeon Wolverines win their fourth consecutive Illinois 4A State Championship. In the Argo sectional playoff game, Norvell scored 7 points to help eliminate Dusable HS, ending Dusable's Cinderella season. What made it personal is Dusable is coached by Zach's dad, Zack Norvell, Sr.!
The 6'4 Class of 2016 Guard is already catching the attention of high-major coaches with his long-range shooting, competitive nature, court vision and scoring abilities.

]]>On Saturday, before a crowd of 7,128 fans at the inaugural Chicago Elite Classic at UIC Pavilion, Parker made his surprise debut (playing 10 minutes). His broken foot had kept him from playing since July, so he was rusty and not playing in top shape. Wearing custom Nike’s for protection, Parker finished with 6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal. After the game, he graded his performance “D+” with a smile.
After the buzz surrounding Parker subsided, senior Illinois-commits PG Jaylon Tate (2 points, 9 assists, 4 steals) and SG Kendrick Nunn (11 points, 6 rebounds) led three-time defending state champion Simeon's 56-35 season-opening victory over Milton (Ga.) as their future college coach John Groce sat courtside.
Simeon’s stifling defense led to countless turnovers and fast breaks all night long.
Best known for their defense, Simeon senior’s #15 Russell Woods (7 points) and Dayton-commit Kendall Pollard (7 points) also threw down monstrous dunks off Tate’s assists.
The starters moved to the bench for much of the second half allowing star sophomore #0 Dennis “DJ” Williams to score 12 points and star freshman #10 Zack Norvell to nail his first 3 for Simeon. The starters returned for a curtain call in the fourth with the final alley oop from Jay Tate to Kendrick Nunn.
